RESIDENTIAL | Housing | Rather than choose a familiar building type for this mixed-use housing project, MVRDV imagines a structure resembling a landscape formation, with peaks and valleys, canyons and bays, and grottos and caves. Its irregular geometry defines three distinct blocks and pedestrian links through the building with the adjacent park. A variety of indoor and outdoor amenities and unusual spatial qualities encourage a rich social life to develop, creating a community. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/9756fd_3bf3c438bd7e4809bf1bcf714add4e6c~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_1600,h_1067,al_c,q_85/Future%20Towers%20(10).jpg 1/0 Private Public Pin Pin 0 x Appreciators 0 3D models Product 4.4K Views 0 Appreciated Appreciate Please login to appreciate Future Towers Airport Road, Yerawada, Pune, Maharashtra 411006, India mvrdv.com Source: Published on Sep 28, 2023 by: CG Artist Andrew L Premium Member More Buildings from India Facts: Up Up Architecture Office MVRDV Netherlands Category: RESIDENTIAL Housing Project Type: Post Type: Building Country: India Photographers: Architects: MVRDV Area: 140000 m² Year: 2018 City: Pune Construction: - Client CCL Amanora Park Town Description: the architects Text description by Rather than choose a familiar building type for this mixed-use housing project, MVRDV imagines a structure resembling a landscape formation, with peaks and valleys, canyons and bays, and grottos and caves. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Boggestranda is a revitalized cabin retreat in Eidsvåg, Norway, designed by Rever & Drage Architects. Completed in 2016, the project converted an old building with a simple cellar and ten small rooms into a functional, airy cabin that offers stunning views of the fjord and mountain landscape. The design philosophy centered on retaining the traditional exterior appearance facing the road and village, while opening up the structure to the scenery on the other side. The original building featured a mix of materials, including wood, stone, and corrugated iron. Rever & Drage incorporated this eclectic feel into the new design, adding large glass panels to the south-east wall. This created unobstructed views from the kitchen, sitting, and dining areas. A long window was also added in the loft-style bedroom, allowing for picturesque views when lying in bed. To create a more open and modern living space, most of the interior partitions were removed. The loft and ground floor were combined into a single, open space, while the bedroom was the only room to be preserved. Functional updates were also made, including a tiled area with underfloor heating to dry wet shoes and an insulating wind membrane in the walls to improve heat retention. The existing corrugated iron roof was covered with a new wooden roof. On the west side, a simple covered shelter was added to the original facade, providing a dry space for equipment and creating an additional outdoor area. Looking to highlight what other designers often seek to hide, they created a deceptively simple design with visible joints, beautiful brass fittings and accomplished craftsmanship. Available in a high and low back version, the solid oak frame and curved rear legs are shaped for stability. The back and seat, fitted with corresponding cushions, are upholstered in stitched linen canvas to provide an elegant expression and supreme sitting comfort. Situated near the Jeseníky Mountains, the project involved transforming a plot where a barn once stood. Instead of demolishing the original structure entirely, the architects salvaged the monumental granite walls, inserting a new timber construction between them to preserve the site's history. The new house is connected to a separate studio/garage via a central, multifunctional outdoor terrace. The design was created for an elderly couple who wished to move from a city apartment to a house with a garden. The primary living space is on the ground floor and is designed to accommodate the couple's future needs, featuring a no-threshold layout and a bathroom accessible to wheelchairs. This main floor includes an entry foyer, bathroom, utility room, living room with dining area and kitchen, and a bedroom. A staircase leads to an attic that serves as a bedroom for visiting family and provides storage for sports equipment for the nearby Ramzová ski area. The house emphasizes sustainability and low-energy performance. The KVH (solid constructional wood) lumber beam system was assembled with minimal fasteners and insulated with blown cellulose. For durability and aesthetic continuity with local architecture, the exterior is clad in charred spruce wood, an application of the shou sugi ban technique. The interior features perimeter walls lined with unfired bricks and finished with clay plaster, which helps regulate humidity and creates a comfortable indoor climate. Heating is provided by a solid fuel stove, with electric cables as a backup. The southern facade is complemented by a stone terrace shaded by a textile canopy, preventing the building from overheating. RESIDENTIAL | Prefabricated | The Karangahake House, designed by MAKE Architects NZ LTD, is a 100-square-meter prefabricated family home in the North Island of New Zealand, completed in 2019. The house is situated on a hilltop overlooking the Karangahake forests, the Kaimai Ranges, and the Waitawheta River valley. The design draws inspiration from traditional New Zealand tramping huts and focuses on sustainable, simple living and a connection with nature. The elongated, barn-like structure with a gable roof is designed to blend into the rural landscape. The home was built using efficient construction methods, with prefabricated floors, walls, and roofs assembled on-site in just four days. Its compact design includes a double-height living and kitchen area, a mezzanine level above two bedrooms and a bathroom, and a separate guest bedroom/office wing. An "Outdoor Room," connects the main house to the guest wing and provides a flexible, sheltered space, with a section of polycarbonate roof filtering light and creating a lantern effect at night. The exterior is clad in locally sourced timber, which will age to a natural gray over time, while the interior features warm cross-laminated timber floors and plywood walls and ceilings. The Karangahake House incorporates carefully selected materials and finishes, weathertight linings, and efficient ventilation systems to promote sustainability and minimize environmental impact. - Hemp House | earthtopeoplestudio | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Hemp House by earthtopeoplestudio is an eco-conscious rehabilitation of an abandoned 1930s cabin in the Schoharie Valley, New York, led by Brittany and Jordan Weller, who subsequently founded the design studio Earth to People. The couple originally intended to build a new straw-bale house but instead chose a mindful, preservation-focused approach to revive the existing, dilapidated structure. The renovation was performed on a modest budget, prioritizing the use of locally sourced materials and salvaged items from the property itself, including fieldstone. The design philosophy focused on respecting the past to build a better, more sustainable future, challenging conventional, modern building standards. Materials were selected based on their regional availability and sustainable qualities. For instance, Eastern White Pine and Eastern Cedar were used for their proximity, reducing transport-related environmental impact. Charring the exterior timber using a slow, meditative, on-site process—rather than automated, high-heat methods—protected the wood naturally against decay, insects, and weather, while providing fire resistance. A final coat of natural tung oil was applied with assistance from the owners' children. The home's most significant sustainable upgrade, and the source of its name, is the addition of zero-carbon, plant-based hemp insulation. The insulation was applied in the form of hempcrete, a breathable material made from the woody core of the hemp plant mixed with a lime binder. This natural mixture regulates interior temperature and humidity by absorbing and releasing moisture, reducing the risk of mold and eliminating the need for plastic or vapor barriers. Inside, the cabin features a warm and inviting atmosphere, in contrast to its weathered exterior. - House in Divčibare | EXE STUDIO | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | House | The Divčibare Mountain Home, designed by Belgrade-based EXE STUDIO and completed in 2015, is an asymmetrical holiday residence located on the hillside of Mount Maljen in western Serbia. The 76-square-meter house was built into the slope to minimize its impact on the site, which, despite being overrun with pine trees, retains the character of an open field. The design is a study in contrasts, merging traditional mountain architecture with contemporary aesthetics through its distinctive dual-volume structure. The house is composed of two main sections, each defined by a different material and texture. One volume is clad in near-black timber shingles, referencing original mountain homes and housing the sheltered porch and entrance, as well as a bedroom above. The other volume features a smooth white ceramic surface and contains the combined living, dining, and kitchen area. A large picture window on the south side of the white volume creates a strong connection between the interior and the idyllic pine forest and hilly terrain outside. The interior maintains a minimalist aesthetic, allowing the focus to remain on the large window and the surrounding landscape. The design and construction process was constrained by a relatively low budget and the site's inaccessibility, which led the architects to create an architecture of simple, robust gestures using locally available materials like pine wood from nearby forests. The resulting structure, with its monochromatic and asymmetrical form, successfully blends with its natural surroundings while offering a modern, contemplative retreat for its inhabitants.
