The house is situated on a gently sloping meadow, surrounded by cherry trees, and is accessed via a small steel bridge. The design process was centered on creating an appropriate and contemporary architectural statement that respects its rural, traditional surroundings. The raw, monolithic design features thick, 50cm-wide insulating concrete walls, with all surfaces left untreated. This choice, combined with the use of raw steel and silver fir, creates a robust and elemental interior and exterior. The living spaces are distributed vertically across three floors, linked by an open staircase, which contributes to the building's open and spacious feel despite its compact footprint. Heating is integrated directly into the concrete core, supplemented by a central furnace for additional warmth. The project balances a minimalist, brutalist aesthetic with the surrounding landscape, providing a striking yet functional refuge. Built as a summer retreat and allotment house for a family of four, the 35-square-meter structure demonstrates maximum efficiency and thoughtful design within strict building limitations. The project harmonizes a deep connection with nature and draws inspiration from architectural masterpieces, creating a space that feels both innovative and timeless. The Villa Minimale's design concept was born from a unique fusion of two architectural inspirations: Villa Rotonda (Andrea Palladio): The Palladian influence is evident in the project's centralized plan and symmetrical layout. Kings Road House (R. M. Schindler): The Los Angeles home's spirit is echoed in the use of four distinct volumes and the creative spatial arrangement. The house is composed of four identical, prefabricated wooden "sheds" arranged in a windmill-like formation around a central, circular air space. This innovative layout maximizes natural light and ventilation while blurring the lines between the interior and exterior. A prominent central oculus or skylight allows for views of the starry night sky from the upper-level sleeping areas. Despite being constrained by local regulations that limit its footprint to 35 m² and its height to 5 meters, the Villa Minimale achieves exceptional spatial efficiency. The interior is expertly planned to serve a family of four. The central area features a dining space, surrounded by a kitchen, a bathroom, a toilet, and a cozy reading alcove. A staircase provides access to the upper level. The upper level contains three bunk beds, offering a "camping-like" feel that is accentuated by the skylight views. The exterior features prefabricated timber construction with light-glazed timber battens and a copper roof. The inner surfaces are lined with veneered marine pine plywood, creating a warm, natural, and inviting atmosphere. The design creates a seamless flow between indoors and outdoors, allowing views of the surrounding landscape in all four directions. Completed in 2023, the cabin was commissioned to provide a unique and serene retreat for relaxation, offering a deep connection with the surrounding nature, which includes an orchard and mature trees. The dwelling is perched on 4-meter-high concrete stilts, allowing the landscape to flow unimpeded beneath and creating a feeling of being in a "bird's nest," which offers a sense of security and intimacy. The structure is built from sustainable materials, featuring a frame of glued laminated spruce timbers and a platform and roof of cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels. The lower part of the structure and the terrace are made from glued laminated larch timbers. The most prominent feature of the design is the extensive use of glass walls, which enclose the entire living space to provide uninterrupted, 360-degree views of the natural surroundings. For privacy, interior curtains can be drawn. The open-plan interior is designed for simplicity and comfort. It includes a built-in bed, a connected bar/kitchenette, and a suspended fireplace that creates a cozy, warm atmosphere. The space is divided into distinct zones for sleeping, sitting, and conversing. Large HS portals—sliding doors—provide access to a spacious terrace overlooking the farm's orchard. While the current cabin lacks a bathroom and cooking facilities, plans are in place for a future expansion that will add a sauna, shower, and toilet in the space between the supporting pillars beneath the house. The project is a reinterpretation of a dilapidated old building, carefully drafted to align with the passions of its owner. The structure is designed as a sanctuary for recreation, meditation, and personal development, offering a place for its owner to find balance and reconnect with nature. The design of Tom's Hut focuses on simplicity and a deep connection to its environment. The cabin features an angular shape that encloses a two-level space and is constructed entirely of wood, with an untreated larch exterior that helps the small structure blend seamlessly into its forest setting. One of its unique features is the ability to be firmly closed on all sides with wooden shutters, or to have its windows opened to provide varying views of the surrounding wilderness. The interior space, which some have described as ""chapel-like,"" is reduced to the bare minimum, providing only the essentials for a contemplative life. The off-grid nature of the cabin is a core aspect of its design. It deliberately eschews modern amenities like electricity, relying on a single water fountain, an indoor fireplace, an outdoor fire pit, and a stove for cooking and heating. This intentional rusticity provides an escape from modern conveniences and reinforces the project's purpose as a back-to-basics retreat. The thoughtful connection between the interior and the outdoors is emphasized by large openings at the front and back of the hut, visually and physically linking the living space to the surrounding nature. Completed in 2019, the small house is situated on a hillside plot at the edge of the Vienna Woods, within the distinct allotment garden settlement of Pötzleinsdorf. Rather than conforming to the varied and often chaotic architectural styles of its neighbors, the design offers a creative commentary by arranging three varying cubes into a spatial collage. These cubes are distinct on the exterior, combining materials like classic larch wood and corrugated metal with different colors and finishes. The interior of the cottage, however, unites these varied volumes into a single, cohesive space, maximizing the use of its limited 50 square meters. The design is a triumph of function over convention, allowing for cooking, reading, working, and sleeping to occur in a seamless spatial flow, unconstrained by traditional room definitions. The material palette for the interior is deliberately modest, featuring three-layer wood panels for the walls, linoleum flooring, and upholstered foam cubes that double as a sofa. This simplicity is contrasted by a vivid and playful color concept that energizes the internal space. While the exterior is characterized by natural and more subdued tones, the interior is a dynamic mix of hot orange-red and cool green-blue, complemented by accent colors like coral and light blue. The final effect is a home that joyfully captures the spirit of creating a small, personal kingdom within a larger community. The design has received notable recognition, including an award at the wienwood 21 competition. Located on the green slopes near Kumrovec in the Zagorje region of Croatia, the project transformed a dilapidated, decades-old cottage into a modern and organic living space that honors local heritage. The design reinterprets traditional cottage architecture by combining natural materials with a bold, contemporary intervention. The main architectural feature of the renovation is the addition of a sleek glass and aluminum cube that replaces the old porch and slides outwards from the main thatched volume. This addition serves as a dynamic entrance and a living area that is oriented to receive maximum southern exposure. With sliding glass walls, the cube blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces and opens up to a new wooden terrace that appears to hover over the hillside, offering expansive views of the Zagorje landscape. The traditional cottage form was preserved, but the architects enhanced its material palette by using locally sourced, rustic materials. The original thatched roof was replaced with a new one that extends down over the façade, and the gables were re-clad with wood. This innovative use of straw, considered an archaic material, creates a warm and earthy exterior that contrasts with the minimalist glass cube. The renovation also preserved the cottage's original stone pedestal, grounding the updated structure in its history. A pathway made of tree stumps leads to the entrance, further connecting the home with its natural surroundings. Inside, the house is organized across three floors: a basement, a ground floor for common living spaces (leisure, dining, and cooking areas), and a first floor for the sleeping areas. The ground floor is arranged around a central ""hearth"" in the traditional Zagorje manner. This approach of reinterpreting traditional construction technologies and using local, renewable resources demonstrates a commitment to sustainable, low-impact design. The project has received recognition, including being shortlisted for a World Architecture Festival Award in 2015. Designed by Carl-Viggo Hølmebakk with his team, the 25-square-meter project successfully blends the rehabilitation of the old timber structure with a new, contemporary addition. The design is a sensitive and sophisticated response to the site's stunning yet demanding coastal climate, characterized by spectacular mountains and harsh winds. The original concept involved encasing the weathered timber core within a new protective shell, allowing the old house to stand freely inside. While this initial plan was modified, the final result still features a distinct and respectful relationship between the old and new elements. The built project focuses on the renovation of the existing house and the construction of a westward extension. The addition acts as a "pure extension," echoing the geometrical principles of the original structure, notably its asymmetrical dormer windows, which allow light into the loft and frame views of the landscape. To withstand the extreme wind conditions of the area, the structures are anchored using different methods. The pre-existing Nordlandshus is secured to the ground with guy wires, while the new prefabricated pine glulam extension is wind-anchored to an encompassing concrete slab, which provides a stabilizing counterweight. This structural duality highlights the architects' adaptive and thoughtful approach to construction in a challenging environment. The material palette chosen for the Summer House Gravråk is both humble and resilient, allowing the building to integrate with its natural surroundings. The addition is clad in untreated spruce, a material selected to develop a natural, gray patina over time as it is exposed to sun and rain. The roof is covered with standing seam zinc roofing, offering durability against the elements. The interior features birch plywood cladding and pine flooring, providing a warm and modern finish. The windows are a two-fold design, with aluminum frames on the exterior for protection and wood on the interior to match the warm timber finishes. An artwork titled "this must be the place" by Swedish artist Jan Håfstrøm is integrated into the design, adding a unique and personal touch. Our Studio is a collaboration of architects and designers that believe architecture is a practice of optimism. We approach our projects with the attitude that to make great places, you must believe in the future, but also remember the past. Studio Libeskind’s architecture emerges from the idea that a building should be expressive and reflect contemporary life. Innovation is at the core of our design process. We believe that bold design must be realized with sustainable technology and we strongly believe that the art of architecture lies in creating a maximum impact within the constraints of budgets and functionality. We know from experience that great architecture comes from working with great clients; however, architecture is a public art and we hold ourselves accountable not only to the client, but to the communities, and cities in which we build. Daniel and his partner Nina Libeskind established Studio Daniel Libeskind in Berlin, Germany, in 1989 after winning the competition to build the Jewish Museum Berlin. In February 2003, Studio Daniel Libeskind moved its headquarters from Berlin to New York City when Daniel Libeskind was selected as the master planner for the World Trade Center redevelopment. source: libeskind.com Category Museum Post Type Building Project Type CULTURAL Country United Kingdom Year 2001 Area 69,965 sq.ft Client Imperial War Museum North Photographers www.zhiig.com Premium Member Architectural Designer Lily Taylor Collaborate 3D Design Suggest Materials Suggest Product Add Request Design © ZHIG Team Materials Suggested by Manufacturers: Model Full Name Details Details View more

  • Atelier Nyp | Studio Bua | ZHIG

HOSPITALITY | Studio | The Atelier Nyp is a sustainable artist's studio and guesthouse designed by Studio Bua on the site of a former sheep shed in remote western Iceland. Completed in 2023, the cabin was built on the repurposed concrete foundation of the original structure, which had been destroyed by extreme weather. This approach minimized the project's environmental impact and maximized existing resources, both material and cultural. Located in Skarðsströnd, the cabin is part of a broader development by Studio Bua of former farm buildings into a home, cultural spaces, and additional guesthouses. The project is named after the Nypurhyrna mountain that rises up from behind it. The cabin features a deliberately simple, jet-black corrugated steel exterior that references the local vernacular and protects against the harsh Icelandic weather. Its off-center pitched roof echoes the distinctive shape of one of the area's dominant mountain peaks. The interior features exposed cross-laminated timber (CLT) walls, which create a warm and cozy atmosphere. The space is divided into two independent units: a workspace with living quarters for the artist and her husband, and a self-contained mini-apartment for guests. Salvaged materials were incorporated throughout the project, including a staircase from a historic Reykjavík building and kitchen units from a 1950s apartment. • Kashubian House | Grzegorz Layer | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | The Kashubian House, a project by architect Grzegorz Layer, is a compact, 67-square-meter home situated in a forested area near Lake Gowidlinski in the Kashubia region of northwestern Poland. Completed in 2016, the house was designed as a simple, economical, and functional year-round residence that blends harmoniously with its natural surroundings. The house has a distinctive, asymmetrical shape determined by the functional needs of the interior. Its exterior, clad in dark, blackened pine boards, allows the structure to recede into the shadows of the surrounding trees. The dark facade also helps the building to absorb solar heat, which contributes to warming the interior. In contrast, the interior features natural-colored wood, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Windows are irregularly placed to frame specific views of the forest and meadows, connecting the interior to the lush landscape. The ground floor features an open-plan layout, with a spacious day zone encompassing the living room, dining area, and a kitchen annex, which has direct access to a terrace. A central staircase divides the open living space from a more private section that includes the main bedroom, a bathroom, and a toilet. The asymmetrical roof provides enough height for a mezzanine level, which houses two guest bedrooms. The house is built using a traditional timber-framed skeletal construction, with the exterior clad in locally sourced pine. The Copenhagen-based firm reimagined the traditional Danish summerhouse, drawing on regional architectural traditions while infusing them with contemporary elements. Built on the footprint of a preexisting house to minimize disruption to the landscape, the new structure respects its tranquil seaside location while offering a serene sanctuary for a family from the city. The design is composed of two interlocking gabled volumes, arranged to create a sense of dynamic flow and to frame stunning views of the beach and the Kattegat strait. A boardwalk flanked by wooden columns and landscaping leads visitors toward the central entrance and a private atrium, which provides a secluded outdoor space. The exterior is clad in cedar wood, chosen for its ability to weather gracefully over time and blend with the natural surroundings. A green sedum roof, coated with various plant species, changes color with the seasons, further integrating the house with the heather-covered hills. Inside, a light, tone-on-tone material palette creates an airy and open feel that bathes the interior in soft, diffused light. Natural Douglas fir planks from Dinesen cover the floors and line the walls and ceilings, creating a tactile connection to nature and a sense of warmth. In the living spaces, brick flooring pays homage to Danish mid-century modern residential design. A sunken living area leads to the minimalist kitchen, anchored by a silver travertine island. Custom built-in storage is seamlessly integrated throughout the house to maintain a clean, clutter-free environment. The home's two bathrooms also emphasize a connection to nature through framed views and the use of natural materials. One bathroom features an outdoor shower area enclosed by the same cedar that clads the exterior, allowing inhabitants to immerse themselves in their natural surroundings. • Koleliba | Hristina Hristova | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Mobile | The Koleliba, designed by Bulgarian architect Hristina Hristova, is a mobile, nine-square-meter tiny house created in 2015 as an affordable and flexible alternative to a conventional holiday home. A fabricated word meaning "a hut with wheels," the project was born out of Hristova's desire to escape the crowded seaside resorts and reconnect with nature. Built on a trailer base, the small structure can be towed behind a family car, offering a nomadic and minimalist approach to vacationing. The design philosophy behind the Koleliba emphasizes a return to a simpler, less materialistic life, prioritizing free time and experiences over luxury. It serves as a stylish protest against consumerism and the "more is more" mentality. The interior features a minimalist aesthetic, with walls and furniture constructed from birch plywood, while the exterior is clad in Bulgarian pine. Both wood surfaces are treated with a protective oil to resist fading and maintain their natural appearance. Despite its compact 96-square-foot footprint, the Koleliba feels surprisingly spacious due to a vaulted ceiling, a standard internal height of 2.4 meters at the ridge, and full-height glazed windows. These windows also allow the surrounding landscape to become a dominant feature of the interior. A semi-outdoor living area extends the space, featuring a removable awning, a small deck, and a collapsible bench and outdoor kitchen setup. Inside, the efficient layout includes a sofa bed, a kitchenette with an oven and fridge, and a toilet. Following the success of the prototype, Koleliba has evolved from a personal project into a family-run business that builds tiny houses for a more sustainable and experience-focused lifestyle. The company focuses on creating off-grid capable homes using sustainably sourced timber and applying traditional carpentry and minimalist design. • Field House | Lookofsky Architecture | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | The Field House, a project by Lookofsky Architecture completed in 2020 on the Swedish island of Fårö, is a contemporary take on the area's traditional fishermen's huts and farmhouses. Instead of a single, large structure, the design is composed of several small, interconnected timber volumes, each with a distinct purpose, such as a bedroom unit, a communal living area, or a reading room. This clustered arrangement is a modern interpretation of local settlement patterns and allows for flexible expansion with additional units in the future. The house stands on a continuous concrete platform that also serves as the interior flooring, echoing Gotland's characteristic limestone bedrock. The exterior is clad in solid larch wood boards, a regional tradition, which will naturally weather from a golden brown to a silver-grey color over time. Inside, the walls are covered in birch plywood, which provides a warm and inviting contrast to the bare concrete floor. The interiors are characterized by an austere minimalism, with storage and furniture seamlessly integrated into the walls to emphasize the simple intersecting surfaces. Large, frameless windows and a sliding door create carefully framed views of the surrounding field, fostering a sense of continuity between the house and the natural landscape. • Two Cabins on Stilts (Les Cabanes Perchées) | Cyril Chênebeau Architecte | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Architect Cyril Chênebeau created the "Two Cabins On Stilts" (Les Cabanes Perchées) in Saint-Martin-Vésubie, France, near the Mercantour National Park, as immersive, all-season getaways. Completed in 2022, the project consists of two identical, nine-sided cabin volumes elevated on V-shaped larch stilts. The design balances a traditional gabled cabin form with a contemporary, "perched" habitat that minimizes its footprint on the forested site. Each cabin is shaped as a nine-sided prism with a double-sided gabled roof. The interior is spacious, with generous ceiling heights that follow the roofline. Large windows and strategically placed openings frame views of the surrounding larch forest, filtering light into the interior throughout the day. The living area is organized around a central hearth, with a visible and connected spa area that is also accessible from the large south-facing terrace. This provides a unique alpine experience for guests. The cabins are clad in dark, charred wood cladding, which echoes the color of the larch tree bark and helps the structures blend into their environment. The cabins are supported by a unique, three-dimensional wooden post structure made of stripped larch poles. The V-shaped posts evoke leaning tree trunks and reinforce the "perched" visual effect. This light-colored structural wood is left exposed to create a visual contrast with the dark facade. The interior features a warm, refined material palette with carefully selected coverings and furniture. Project team and credits Architect: Cyril Chênebeau. Client: SMDVVV (CG06).
