Architecture Office | We are often asked how we came up with our company name, The Ranch Mine. Before we formed our company back in 2010, we spent 7 months traveling around Arizona, exploring the history of our state. During these trips, a common thread started to emerge: the pioneer spirit. Located on the green slopes near Kumrovec in the Zagorje region of Croatia, the project transformed a dilapidated, decades-old cottage into a modern and organic living space that honors local heritage. The design reinterprets traditional cottage architecture by combining natural materials with a bold, contemporary intervention. The main architectural feature of the renovation is the addition of a sleek glass and aluminum cube that replaces the old porch and slides outwards from the main thatched volume. This addition serves as a dynamic entrance and a living area that is oriented to receive maximum southern exposure. With sliding glass walls, the cube blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces and opens up to a new wooden terrace that appears to hover over the hillside, offering expansive views of the Zagorje landscape. The traditional cottage form was preserved, but the architects enhanced its material palette by using locally sourced, rustic materials. The original thatched roof was replaced with a new one that extends down over the façade, and the gables were re-clad with wood. This innovative use of straw, considered an archaic material, creates a warm and earthy exterior that contrasts with the minimalist glass cube. The renovation also preserved the cottage's original stone pedestal, grounding the updated structure in its history. A pathway made of tree stumps leads to the entrance, further connecting the home with its natural surroundings. Inside, the house is organized across three floors: a basement, a ground floor for common living spaces (leisure, dining, and cooking areas), and a first floor for the sleeping areas. The ground floor is arranged around a central ""hearth"" in the traditional Zagorje manner. RESIDENTIAL | House | The very energy-efficient structure uses highly-insulated SIP panels, prefabricated to minimize transport of materials. The cladding is Scottish larch, charred by the contractor using a variation of the traditional Japanese shou sugi ban technique to achieve a naturally varied rich color and improved durability. The house will be completely off-grid, with its own water supply, sewage treatment and electrical system, all designed to minimize energy use. The modular form of the house, made up of three simple, pitched-roofed volumes, reduces the apparent scale and the height of the roofs and allows sections to be isolated and left unheated when not required. The scale of the individual sections relates to that of the buildings small and shelters that have stood on the peninsula in the past, the ruins of which still remain. The design does not try to copy the style of existing buildings in the area but its straightforward use of local stone and timber and simple forms are common with the traditional croft houses and agricultural buildings of the Highlands. The intention is that the development should have minimal impact upon the natural flora and fauna and will instead leave it as undisturbed as possible. Rather than surrounding the house with conventional domestic garden planting, the natural materials of the house sit in the natural landscape and, as the ground level falls away to the southeast, terminate with a deck or jetty above the unspoiled surrounding site. New planting will use native species chosen only to re-establish those that have been suppressed by invasive rhododendron or grazing, and to introduce a little more ecological diversity. As the process of clearing rhododendron continues, it is believed that other species should be able to reclaim much of the site with only minimal help - small Scots Pine seedlings are already established and need only protection from grazing. The existing birch, alder and larch will be augmented, with more planting of native heathers and juniper to add to the diversity of the lower stores. Yellow flag iris will be introduced to the existing boggy area to the east of the proposed house. The flat "green" roof connecting the pitched volumes will be planted with the some of the same mix of sedums, sea pink and other species found on the rocks nearby. The cladding is Scottish larch, charred by the contractor using a variation of the traditional Japanese shou sugi ban technique to achieve a naturally varied rich color and improved durability. The house will be completely off-grid, with its own water supply, sewage treatment and electrical system, all designed to minimize energy use. The modular form of the house, made up of three simple, pitched-roofed volumes, reduces the apparent scale and the height of the roofs and allows sections to be isolated and left unheated when not required. The scale of the individual sections relates to that of the buildings small and shelters that have stood on the peninsula in the past, the ruins of which still remain. The design does not try to copy the style of existing buildings in the area but its straightforward use of local stone and timber and simple forms are common with the traditional croft houses and agricultural buildings of the Highlands. The intention is that the development should have minimal impact upon the natural flora and fauna and will instead leave it as undisturbed as possible. Rather than surrounding the house with conventional domestic garden planting, the natural materials of the house sit in the natural landscape and, as the ground level falls away to the southeast, terminate with a deck or jetty above the unspoiled surrounding site. New planting will use native species chosen only to re-establish those that have been suppressed by invasive rhododendron or grazing, and to introduce a little more ecological diversity. As the process of clearing rhododendron continues, it is believed that other species should be able to reclaim much of the site with only minimal help - small Scots Pine seedlings are already established and need only protection from grazing. The existing birch, alder and larch will be augmented, with more planting of native heathers and juniper to add to the diversity of the lower stores. Yellow flag iris will be introduced to the existing boggy area to the east of the proposed house. The flat "green" roof connecting the pitched volumes will be planted with the some of the same mix of sedums, sea pink and other species found on the rocks nearby. RETREATS | Cabin | The 54-square-meter cabin known as La Invernada is a tranquil off-grid retreat designed by Guillermo Acuña Arquitectos Asociados to blend seamlessly into the native Valdivian forest of Curicó, Chile. The project, completed in 2019, was conceptualized as a temporary structure that could one day disappear, underscoring the impermanent nature of occupying the forest. Its unique aesthetic was inspired by the idea of "the vegetal," with the materials chosen to represent natural elements: wood for the trees, a mesh for the leaves, and polycarbonate for the forest's light. Constructed with a prefabricated, CNC-cut laminated Chilean pinewood frame, the cabin was assembled on-site to reduce construction time and waste. Resting on a cantilevered platform supported by stilts, it minimizes its environmental impact on the sloping terrain and surrounding flora. A wooden pathway snakes through the woods to the cabin's entrance, while the deck wraps around a tree, creating a deep connection between the inhabitant and the environment. The exterior is defined by a multi-layered skin. The inner layer is a clear, flexible polycarbonate that provides transparency and protection from rain, while the outer layer is a golden-hued textile mesh. During the day, the mesh filters light to create a warm, golden glow inside, echoing the changing leaves in autumn. At night, the cabin becomes a glowing lantern, illuminating the forest. The transparent facade plays with the idea of impermanence by reflecting the forest's shadows and movements on its skin. Inside, the compact cabin is organized vertically across three levels. The ground floor features a living area with a wood-burning stove, a small bathroom, and a bedroom with glass doors that open onto the terrace. Its unique aesthetic was inspired by the idea of "the vegetal," with the materials chosen to represent natural elements: wood for the trees, a mesh for the leaves, and polycarbonate for the forest's light. Constructed with a prefabricated, CNC-cut laminated Chilean pinewood frame, the cabin was assembled on-site to reduce construction time and waste. Resting on a cantilevered platform supported by stilts, it minimizes its environmental impact on the sloping terrain and surrounding flora. A wooden pathway snakes through the woods to the cabin's entrance, while the deck wraps around a tree, creating a deep connection between the inhabitant and the environment. The exterior is defined by a multi-layered skin. The inner layer is a clear, flexible polycarbonate that provides transparency and protection from rain, while the outer layer is a golden-hued textile mesh. During the day, the mesh filters light to create a warm, golden glow inside, echoing the changing leaves in autumn. At night, the cabin becomes a glowing lantern, illuminating the forest. The transparent facade plays with the idea of impermanence by reflecting the forest's shadows and movements on its skin. Inside, the compact cabin is organized vertically across three levels. The ground floor features a living area with a wood-burning stove, a small bathroom, and a bedroom with glass doors that open onto the terrace. A ladder leads to the upper two floors, which are fitted with cushions to create cozy relaxation areas with panoramic forest views.
