Completed in 2023, the cabin was commissioned to provide a unique and serene retreat for relaxation, offering a deep connection with the surrounding nature, which includes an orchard and mature trees. The dwelling is perched on 4-meter-high concrete stilts, allowing the landscape to flow unimpeded beneath and creating a feeling of being in a "bird's nest," which offers a sense of security and intimacy. The structure is built from sustainable materials, featuring a frame of glued laminated spruce timbers and a platform and roof of cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels. The lower part of the structure and the terrace are made from glued laminated larch timbers. The most prominent feature of the design is the extensive use of glass walls, which enclose the entire living space to provide uninterrupted, 360-degree views of the natural surroundings. For privacy, interior curtains can be drawn. The open-plan interior is designed for simplicity and comfort. It includes a built-in bed, a connected bar/kitchenette, and a suspended fireplace that creates a cozy, warm atmosphere. The space is divided into distinct zones for sleeping, sitting, and conversing. Large HS portals—sliding doors—provide access to a spacious terrace overlooking the farm's orchard. While the current cabin lacks a bathroom and cooking facilities, plans are in place for a future expansion that will add a sauna, shower, and toilet in the space between the supporting pillars beneath the house. One of its unique features is the ability to be firmly closed on all sides with wooden shutters, or to have its windows opened to provide varying views of the surrounding wilderness. The off-grid nature of the cabin is a core aspect of its design. It deliberately eschews modern amenities like electricity, relying on a single water fountain, an indoor fireplace, an outdoor fire pit, and a stove for cooking and heating. RESIDENTIAL | House | The Kashubian House, a project by architect Grzegorz Layer, is a compact, 67-square-meter home situated in a forested area near Lake Gowidlinski in the Kashubia region of northwestern Poland. Completed in 2016, the house was designed as a simple, economical, and functional year-round residence that blends harmoniously with its natural surroundings. The house has a distinctive, asymmetrical shape determined by the functional needs of the interior. Its exterior, clad in dark, blackened pine boards, allows the structure to recede into the shadows of the surrounding trees. The dark facade also helps the building to absorb solar heat, which contributes to warming the interior. In contrast, the interior features natural-colored wood, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Windows are irregularly placed to frame specific views of the forest and meadows, connecting the interior to the lush landscape. The ground floor features an open-plan layout, with a spacious day zone encompassing the living room, dining area, and a kitchen annex, which has direct access to a terrace. A central staircase divides the open living space from a more private section that includes the main bedroom, a bathroom, and a toilet. The asymmetrical roof provides enough height for a mezzanine level, which houses two guest bedrooms. The Copenhagen-based firm reimagined the traditional Danish summerhouse, drawing on regional architectural traditions while infusing them with contemporary elements. Built on the footprint of a preexisting house to minimize disruption to the landscape, the new structure respects its tranquil seaside location while offering a serene sanctuary for a family from the city. The design is composed of two interlocking gabled volumes, arranged to create a sense of dynamic flow and to frame stunning views of the beach and the Kattegat strait. A boardwalk flanked by wooden columns and landscaping leads visitors toward the central entrance and a private atrium, which provides a secluded outdoor space. The exterior is clad in cedar wood, chosen for its ability to weather gracefully over time and blend with the natural surroundings. A green sedum roof, coated with various plant species, changes color with the seasons, further integrating the house with the heather-covered hills. Inside, a light, tone-on-tone material palette creates an airy and open feel that bathes the interior in soft, diffused light. Natural Douglas fir planks from Dinesen cover the floors and line the walls and ceilings, creating a tactile connection to nature and a sense of warmth. In the living spaces, brick flooring pays homage to Danish mid-century modern residential design. A sunken living area leads to the minimalist kitchen, anchored by a silver travertine island. Custom built-in storage is seamlessly integrated throughout the house to maintain a clean, clutter-free environment. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Architect Cyril Chênebeau created the "Two Cabins On Stilts" (Les Cabanes Perchées) in Saint-Martin-Vésubie, France, near the Mercantour National Park, as immersive, all-season getaways. Completed in 2022, the project consists of two identical, nine-sided cabin volumes elevated on V-shaped larch stilts. The design balances a traditional gabled cabin form with a contemporary, "perched" habitat that minimizes its footprint on the forested site. Each cabin is shaped as a nine-sided prism with a double-sided gabled roof. The interior is spacious, with generous ceiling heights that follow the roofline. Large windows and strategically placed openings frame views of the surrounding larch forest, filtering light into the interior throughout the day. The living area is organized around a central hearth, with a visible and connected spa area that is also accessible from the large south-facing terrace. This provides a unique alpine experience for guests. The cabins are clad in dark, charred wood cladding, which echoes the color of the larch tree bark and helps the structures blend into their environment.
