RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Located just south of Hamburgsund on Sweden's west coast, the Hee House is a compact, 7x7 meter vacation cabin designed by Studio Ellsinger for a creative family. Completed in 2024, the cabin is set on a granite clearing amid a landscape of pines, rocks, and meadow grass. The design draws inspiration from the studio founders' own home, Villa Ellsinger, and was conceived as a modest structure that "grows upwards" to maximize its small footprint and address the harsh coastal climate of wind, rain, and salt spray. The house is oriented on a north-south axis, with a largely closed-off northern facade to shield it from neighbors and a nearby county road, while opening up with large windows to the south and east to capture sun and views of the forest and fields. The structure is a standout on its rural plot, topped with a distinctive, steep, hat-shaped roof and gables clad in untreated aluminum sheeting for durability. A cantilevered canopy extends from the structure, providing a covered entrance. To create a spacious, unobstructed internal volume, the roof loads are transferred to a horizontal glue-laminated timber frame that sits atop the exterior walls, visible from the outside. Inside, the walls are clad in warm, untreated pine, which contrasts with the red tiles on the kitchen floor. The interior features bespoke furniture and an open-plan living and kitchen area with a high ceiling. An oversized bookshelf serves multiple functions as a room divider, storage, and structural support for the loft, which contains a children's sleeping area, a sofa bed, and a workspace. A custom-built wood-burning stove is also incorporated within the bookshelf. Maritime-themed circular prisms in the front door and loft windows nod to the cabin's seaside location and spread light into the entryway. - Gulf Islands Cabin | Olson Kundig | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Nestled on a prehistoric-feeling island in the Gulf Islands off the coast of Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands Cabin by Olson Kundig is a minimalist retreat designed for deep immersion in nature. Created by design principal Tom Kundig, the single-room cabin was built within the footprint of a previously disturbed area, minimizing its environmental impact. The 191-square-foot, low-maintenance structure was intended to be a secure, self-contained refuge that forces its occupant to engage with the larger outdoor landscape The exterior of the cabin features an industrial-rustic aesthetic, with a weather-resistant shell of raw, untreated corten steel and a concrete back wall that will naturally patina over time to blend in with the surrounding rocks and foliage. When the owner is away, a massive, hand-operated weathered steel panel can be slid across the large glazed façade, securing the cabin from storms and potential fire. The shed roof, with deep overhangs on all sides, provides additional protection from the elements. Inside, the interior is a study in raw simplicity and warmth. The walls and ceilings are lined with natural cedar, much of which was harvested from fallen logs on the property and from a demolished local trestle bridge. This creates a cozy, comfortable refuge despite the compact size. The single room contains a bed, a wood-burning stove for heating, a small kitchenette, and a toilet. In a true gesture of connecting with nature, the shower is placed outdoors on one of the covered porches. Large, highly insulated glass on the front façade floods the interior with natural daylight and offers expansive views of the wooded landscape. The 750-square-foot cabin was designed by Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig for a family that has owned land in the area for generations. The compact, vertical design was intended to foster intimacy and connection, both with each other and with the surrounding forests of central Vermont. The cabin’s material palette is an elemental mix of steel, wood, and concrete, chosen to reflect the character of the wilderness. The exterior features panels of weathering steel, while the interior showcases exposed timber and poured concrete. This rugged, utilitarian aesthetic is balanced by the warmth of natural materials and strategic use of glazing. The layout places the main living spaces on the top floor to maximize views of the surrounding landscape, including the Green Mountains and Worcester Range. Large windows open up the living area, allowing residents to feel a sense of being among the trees. The vertical arrangement of the cabin’s 2,250 square feet is divided across three levels connected by a maple and steel staircase. The lowest level is nestled into the hillside and contains a garage that can double as a game room, as well as a single bedroom and powder room. The middle level includes two additional bedrooms and a bathroom, while the top floor features the main living area, kitchen, and dining space. This design creates a cozy and efficient framework for family life while maintaining a strong visual connection to the wilderness. Conceived as a modern and low-impact alternative to camping, the huts were designed for a client who wanted to provide guest accommodations on the site of a former RV campground while allowing the landscape to return to its natural state. The cabins sit on oversized steel wheels, a creative solution to local zoning regulations that prohibited permanent structures but permitted RVs. This wheeled foundation elevates the huts a short distance above the meadow, allowing native grasses to grow underneath and minimizing the human footprint on the sensitive environment. The 200-square-foot cabins, completed in 2008, are essentially minimalist, steel-clad boxes on a steel and wood platform. Large, double-paned sliding glass doors at one end of each hut open onto a covered deck, extending the usable space into the outdoors. Inside, the material palette is simple, raw, and inexpensive, featuring cork and plywood left as natural as possible. A lopsided, inverted V-shaped roof with clerestory windows floats above the walls, bringing ample natural light into the compact interior. While the cabins offer a warm, sheltered, and low-tech space, showers and other communal facilities are located in a central barn, reinforcing the project's connection to camping. The project was developed as a "growing" home, allowing for phased construction and future expansion from the initial 22-square-meter module to a larger residence of up to 100 square meters. The initial prototype, completed in 2019, is situated on the rocky coast of Crimea. The core of the Ecohouse S22's sustainability is its unique construction method, which uses prefabricated straw panels. These panels are made from compressed straw bales set within a strong wooden frame. This method allows the house kit to be delivered in pieces and erected quickly, typically within two to three days. The use of straw as insulation provides excellent thermal properties, exceeding the heat-insulating performance of traditional wood or brick walls and aligning with European passive house standards for minimal heat loss. As straw is a renewable natural resource, this construction method is eco-friendly, utilizes what would otherwise be considered agricultural waste, and generates minimal construction waste. The design of the Crimea prototype features a strong, cantilevered terrace that projects from the dense vegetation, offering elevated views of the coast and surrounding mountains. To protect against prying eyes, the main facade with its wide window is hidden from passersby. Inside, the two-story module is compactly arranged, with a hallway and bathroom on the first floor and a quieter bedroom area on the second. The house is also equipped with solar panels, designed to provide a significant portion of its energy needs. Designed by the Russian architectural firm Rhizome, the project is surrounded by a pine forest and a vast sand beach, which provided the primary inspiration for its design. The hotel's architecture is a sensitive response to this natural context, focusing on minimal intervention and a deep connection between the buildings and the landscape. Constructed using sustainable prefabricated technology, the hotel was assembled from modules at a factory and then transported to the site. This approach was chosen for its suitability and minimal environmental impact in such a remote location. The complex is comprised of 15 individual L-shaped cabins, a reception building, and other guest facilities, all designed to be ""dispersed"" among the pine trees. Each cabin consists of two modules that include a compact space for up to four guests and a large terrace. Inspired by the tradition of Nordic saunas, the cabins are also equipped with private saunas. The design emphasizes the interaction between the guests and the environment. All rooms feature floor-to-ceiling glazing, ensuring every guest can enjoy panoramic views of the lake and forest. The exterior is clad in wood and dark metal, a color palette that allows the buildings to subtly recede into the landscape, highlighting nature as the main focal point. Inside, the use of natural wood continues, creating a cozy and rustic atmosphere. The hotel is a successful example of harmonizing modern architecture with a pristine, natural setting, providing guests with a tranquil, contemplative retreat. Completed in 2017, the project was commissioned by two brothers who discovered the property during a rock-climbing trip and sought a remote escape to reconnect with nature. The cabin is set amidst a natural landscape featuring impressive cliffs. The design emphasizes simplicity, a deep connection to the environment, and a low-impact approach. Prior to construction, the brothers spent several years reforesting the plot. To minimize transportation and environmental disruption, the masonry for the exterior walls was sourced from a nearby quarry. Local and naturally finished materials, including clay floors, wood, and glass, were chosen to complement the surroundings and create an unpretentious aesthetic. The house's layout is centered on maximizing the landscape views through large windows and sliding doors. The interior, which functions as a ""container of views,"" includes a living and kitchen area, a bathroom, and two bedrooms, all within an open floor plan that promotes natural light and cross-ventilation. A large external terrace, nearly double the size of the house, extends the living space outdoors. The slanted roof, mimicking the surrounding hills, was a practical solution for the area's climate, designed to be maintenance-free.
