HOSPITALITY | Mixed-use | Anchoring the new Emaar Square development, the 48-storey mixed-use tower is conceived as a new civic landmark and beacon for the district. The design combines luxury and urban lifestyles, creating an exciting new destination, with a hotel, spa and restaurant, on the Asian side of Istanbul. The scheme serves residents, hotel guests and the those living in, or visiting, the surrounding area. The first nine levels of the tower contain a five-star hotel. Luxury residences are located above, ranging in size from a large one-bedroom apartment to a five-bedroom duplex penthouse. Two spectacular amenity floors provide private relaxation rooms, a steam room, sauna, and an expansive heated spa pool with panoramic view of the city. The Spa offers bespoke, traditional, and innovative treatments for guests and residents. The hotel’s elegant Grand Ballroom has the capacity to seat up to 800 people and can be divided into three individual spaces. Crowning the tower is the unique Skyview viewing gallery and terrace, where guests can dine and unwind while overlooking the Bosporus strait, watching life go by between two continents – Europe and Asia. The massing of the tower is split into three slender volumes, accentuating the verticality of the building, while providing each floor with a wider outlook. This allows many units to offer multiple double aspect rooms with exclusive views across the city. The Address achieves LEED Gold Certification through substantial eco-friendly and green initiatives that ensure environmental sustainability and guest wellbeing. Underground car parks, electric vehicle charging stations and reserved parking spaces for low emission vehicles reduce carbon emissions. Efficient water flow and flush fixtures across the hotel save 20 percent of indoor water consumption. 50 percent of the landscape irrigation is reduced by incorporating local and adapted plants that consume less water. Recycled and regional materials are widely used, with more than 75 percent of the construction waste being recycled. The Address was designed with mechanical ventilation, standardised fresh air and temperature set values throughout the building. ART AND CULTURE | Cultural center | Swarovski Kristallwelten (Swarovski Crystal Worlds) first opened in 1995 and since then the touristic destination has become one of Austria's most popular attractions with an average of 600,000 visitors annually. On the occasion of the Tyrolean family-owned company's 120 year anniversary in 2015, Snøhetta was commissioned to take part in the expansion leading up to the grand re-opening of the Swarovski Kristallwelten. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The VR Cabin is a vacation refuge designed by Mexico City-based firm CRB Arquitectos. Completed in 2021, the 90 m² project is located in the forested area of Avándaro in Valle de Bravo, Mexico. The cabin was conceived as a space for its users to disconnect from city life and reconnect with the surrounding nature, with a design that emphasizes warmth, simplicity, and a seamless coexistence between the cabin and the forest. The core concept of the VR Cabin is to offer a serene escape where the user can fully experience the tranquility of their forested environment. This connection is achieved through a deliberate design approach: The cabin's exterior is a simple, solid block, which ensures the natural landscape remains the focal point. In contrast, the interior is richly lined with wood to create a warm and cozy atmosphere. The design blurs the line between indoor and outdoor spaces through a series of thoughtful connections. RESIDENTIAL | House | The Enough House is a 700-square-foot timber-framed dwelling designed by MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects as a prototype for minimalist living with a "rural industrial" aesthetic. Completed in 2015, the project is located in Upper Kingsburg, Nova Scotia, on architect Brian MacKay-Lyons's Shobac farm, a "Ghost Architectural Laboratory" and campus that serves as a research ground for the firm. A floor-to-ceiling glass facade is the focal point of the design and includes sliding glass panels that open onto a wooden deck. RESIDENTIAL | Summer House | Between Birch House, a minimalist 58-square-meter summer home in Northern Sealand, Denmark, is a testament to sustainable and resource-conscious building. Completed in 2022 by a collaboration between Kim Lenschow and Pihlmann Architects, the holiday house examines a "lighter way of building, ecologically as well as aesthetically". The project's guiding philosophy was based on a notion of "enough," limiting birch plywood to touchpoints where the body meets the building, such as interior walls, built-ins, and ceilings. Structural elements are left raw and exposed elsewhere, allowing occupants to follow the construction process and celebrate its assembly. This approach results in a calm and contemplative interior with a temporal quality. The house was built without a concrete foundation, resting gently on helical pillars that minimize its footprint on the forest floor. Its lightweight timber frame and modest material palette give it a temporary yet natural presence within the landscape. RESIDENTIAL | House | Designed by São Paulo-based firm Lajedo Arquitetura in collaboration with furniture designer Leon Ades, the Piaba House is a 180-square-meter dwelling completed in 2023. Located near the picturesque village of Igatu in Brazil's Chapada Diamantina, the project is a testament to the harmony between humanity and nature, blending contemporary architecture with the region's rich traditions and landscape. The design process was a hands-on investigation, with the architects and Ades conducting research into the materiality of wood and traditional joinery techniques. They admired artisanal methods and were inspired by the local stonework and craftsmanship, a tradition that developed over generations of local building techniques. The resulting house is a thoughtful arrangement of elements that references Bahia's colonial architecture but adapts them for contemporary living and the unique environment. The house is built into a slope, creating an open space that blurs the boundaries between the interior and the surrounding nature. It is entered through a modest entrance that leads to a sheltered courtyard, a reinterpretation of the traditional patio found in Brazilian and Mediterranean architecture. Large windows frame views of the natural surroundings, while the heavy stone walls evoke the feel of traditional colonial buildings. The construction was done with a combination of techniques, including a stone wall typical of Igatú, assembled by local artisans. The carpentry was created by the architects and Ades themselves, from prefabrication to assembly on the difficult-to-access site. The design philosophy prioritizes a deep respect for the area's cultural and natural heritage, ensuring that the house feels like a natural and integrated part of the landscape rather than an imposition on it. RESIDENTIAL | Summer House | Located on a small, rocky island in Finland's Lake Suontee, Summerhouse V by Playa Architects is a 71-square-meter retreat completed in 2021. The project was commissioned by a family who found their existing 1960s fishing cabin too small for their needs and wanted a new building better suited for island living. The design draws inspiration from classic summer cabin aesthetics while incorporating modern functionality, with a central goal of connecting the occupants with the serene lake environment. The architectural response to the island's unique location and occasional strong winds is a practical and aesthetically refined structure. The summerhouse features a protective saddle roof with long eaves, which extends over covered outdoor spaces. These sheltered areas are protected from the wind by external walls that also serve to frame specific views of the lake. The house is intentionally positioned on the flattest and most scenic part of the island, maximizing both the open lake views and access to the evening sun. Construction was designed for efficiency and minimal environmental impact, using a non-insulated 200 mm thick cross-laminated timber (CLT) frame that could be easily transported and assembled on the island. Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining of the CLT frame allowed for simple yet elegant detailing. The floor and roof were built with wood fiber insulation and LVL and glulam beams. The spruce frame and interior claddings were mostly left untreated, contributing to a natural, rustic feel. Inside, the main space, which combines the kitchen and living room, is defined by the visible saddle roof and the vast, open view of the lake. The project was commissioned by a family who found their existing 1960s fishing cabin too small for their needs and wanted a new building better suited for island living. The design draws inspiration from classic summer cabin aesthetics while incorporating modern functionality, with a central goal of connecting the occupants with the serene lake environment. The architectural response to the island's unique location and occasional strong winds is a practical and aesthetically refined structure. The summerhouse features a protective saddle roof with long eaves, which extends over covered outdoor spaces. These sheltered areas are protected from the wind by external walls that also serve to frame specific views of the lake. The house is intentionally positioned on the flattest and most scenic part of the island, maximizing both the open lake views and access to the evening sun. Construction was designed for efficiency and minimal environmental impact, using a non-insulated 200 mm thick cross-laminated timber (CLT) frame that could be easily transported and assembled on the island. Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining of the CLT frame allowed for simple yet elegant detailing. The floor and roof were built with wood fiber insulation and LVL and glulam beams. The spruce frame and interior claddings were mostly left untreated, contributing to a natural, rustic feel. Inside, the main space, which combines the kitchen and living room, is defined by the visible saddle roof and the vast, open view of the lake.
