- 100% Wooden House | locallll, Suphasidh Studio | ZHIG
EXPERIMENTAL | Cabin | Designed by locallll and SUPHASIDH, the 100% Wooden House is a 55-square-meter prototype dwelling located in the park of Château de la Bourdaisière in Montlouis-sur-Loire, France. Completed in 2020 after winning a competition in 2019, the experimental project explores the potential of using wood exclusively for residential construction and challenges traditional housing models. Inspired by the historic Château while designed for contemporary life, the house is a single, monolithic volume wrapped in thick, weather-resistant wood that contrasts with the smooth, lighter finish of its interior. A fluid internal space is arranged around a central core, with an "interior topography" of varied heights creating distinct functional zones and offering a variety of possible spatial configurations. The interior features a ramp that doubles as a sofa, and different levels for sitting, cooking, and sleeping help to maximize the compact footprint. A covered terrace is located under the higher-level sleeping area. The project showcases a blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology. Untreated chestnut trees that had been previously felled on the castle grounds were processed at a local sawmill using CNC machines. This allowed for a short supply chain and the use of locally sourced materials. The entire structure is elevated off the ground on water-resistant acacia wood piles, allowing it to mimic the surrounding forest environment. All structural elements were prefabricated off-site for rapid assembly, with the cladding cut on-site. The exterior will develop a natural silvery-gray patina over time. The 100% Wooden House is part of an educational promenade in the Château park, feeding on ongoing research and experimentation with wood as a building material. - HOUSE SCHMIEDER FRAXERN | Fischer Schmieder Architekten | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | House | House Schmieder, a compact 8x8 meter cubic concrete residence in Fraxern, Austria, represents a distinctive response by Fischer Schmieder Architekten to its alpine setting. The house is situated on a gently sloping meadow, surrounded by cherry trees, and is accessed via a small steel bridge. The design process was centered on creating an appropriate and contemporary architectural statement that respects its rural, traditional surroundings. The raw, monolithic design features thick, 50cm-wide insulating concrete walls, with all surfaces left untreated. This choice, combined with the use of raw steel and silver fir, creates a robust and elemental interior and exterior. The living spaces are distributed vertically across three floors, linked by an open staircase, which contributes to the building's open and spacious feel despite its compact footprint. Heating is integrated directly into the concrete core, supplemented by a central furnace for additional warmth. The project balances a minimalist, brutalist aesthetic with the surrounding landscape, providing a striking yet functional refuge. HOTEL | Prefabricated Cabin | LILELO, or Little Leisure Lodge, is an eco-hotel in Grazzano Badoglio, Italy, conceived by the Paris-based architecture practice Atelier LAVIT and completed in 2022. Located in the heart of Monferrato, a region known for its vineyards and woodland hills, the hotel consists of a cluster of four modular, eco-friendly cabins. The design is inspired by traditional haystacks, blending naturally with the rural landscape. The project was designed with a strong focus on sustainability and a minimal footprint. The cabins were largely prefabricated off-site, reducing construction time and on-site disruption. To adapt to the sloping terrain, the cabins are raised off the ground on slender pillars, minimizing their impact on the environment. The cabins feature a distinctive A-shaped roof with fully glazed triangular elevations, which also function as the load-bearing structure. This creates a strong visual identity while maximizing natural light and views. The cabins are constructed primarily from natural and eco-compatible materials. The exterior is clad in oil-treated larch, a material chosen for its durability and aging characteristics. The interior also features wood finishes throughout. The LILELO hotel comprises four cabins, each serving a specific function. Private suites: Three of the cabins are private guest suites, each with a continuous, open-plan interior. A deck at one end provides outdoor seating, leading to a sleeping area and a bathroom at the opposite end. Only the toilet is enclosed. Communal cabin: The fourth cabin serves as a common space. It features a large kitchen and a generous outdoor area with a table, intended as a gathering place for guests. The continuous interior layout and expansive windows create a seamless connection between the indoor spaces and the natural surroundings. The interior and furnishings are crafted from wood, creating a warm and cozy atmosphere that complements the cabins' natural setting. Located in a spectacular landscape on the eastern plain of Corsica, France, the cabin was conceived to allow for full immersion in nature while maintaining comfort and protection. The name O_CASELLA is a play on the word "casella," which means "little box" or "shelter" in Corsican, reflecting the cabin's functional and minimalist nature. The design of O_CASELLA is based on two distinct, yet connected, modular volumes: a living module and a pergola. This structure addresses the demands of the warm Mediterranean climate by creating large, shaded areas for outdoor living. To minimize cost and environmental impact on the remote site, the entire cabin was prefabricated in a wood workshop. The modules were then transported fully assembled to the location, significantly reducing on-site construction time and disruption. The closed living module contains the kitchen, bathroom, and a flexible living/sleeping area. It provides framed views of the surrounding wild Corsican mountains and sea through large windows. The open-air pergola provides a ventilated and shaded space for outdoor relaxation, reading, or contemplating the landscape. A movable, mashrabiya-style shutter on a rail system allows occupants to regulate sunlight and air flow. The exterior structure and cladding are made from local Corsican larch (laricciu), a lightweight yet strong wood that contributes to the cabin's portability and durability. The interior walls and ceiling are lined with MDF wood, creating a cozy and protective atmosphere. A generous covered pergola extends the living space outdoors, with an outdoor shower providing an even more direct connection to nature. A steel beam on the façade serves a dual purpose: it hides the rail system for the sliding shutter panel and acts as a gutter for collecting rainwater. The movable mashrabiya panel offers passive cooling and sun protection. The modular system allows for flexibility in installation and configuration, showcasing a forward-thinking approach to sustainable architecture. - Stradella Ridge House | SAOTA | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | House | Cape Town’s SAOTA, alongside US architect developer David Maman and Belgian interior designer Dieter Vander Velpen, designed this Bel Air residence, perched on a steep, triangular site with striking canyon views extending from Century City to the ocean. Inspired by the site’s geometry and orientation, the exterior has a robust angular form. The upper floor is enclosed in white aluminium vertical screens – a pristine, clean element that floats above a monolithic concrete base. This mass element, which gives the building’s primary street character, is interrupted by a single undulation in its otherwise uniform surface, its lightness contrasting with the solid, tactile concrete it hovers over. Entering the property, the architectural character changes. Clean lines persist but are now fragmented, with angled mass walls guiding visitors towards the entrance, and the materiality shifts from metal and concrete to earthy travertine surfaces. The contrast between the containment of the street entrance and the release into the living space, with its architectural lines reinforcing the expansive views over the pool terrace and down the canyon’s flanks, is powerful. A memorably large living space is focused toward the view. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls seamlessly connect indoor and outdoor spaces, merging the main living areas with the pool terrace. The architecture shapes the views, providing privacy where necessary while drawing the landscape’s calmness and serenity into the home’s heart. Inside, fluid, curved forms and a simple palette of stone, timber, and bronze create a unified, sculptural quality. Natural materials and organic shapes infuse warmth and well-being, from the kitchen island to the circular marble bath carved from a single piece of marble. Architecturally, the design balances solidity and lightness, angularity and curvature, street presence and scenic views, resulting in a powerful architectural statement and a cocooning nurturing environment. - Four Seasons House | Joris Verhoeven Architectuur | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | House | Completed in 2020, the Four Seasons House is a prefabricated, negative-carbon family home located in the Drijflanen nature reserve in Tilburg, Netherlands. Designed by architect Joris Verhoeven for himself and his family, the 70-square-meter house was built to intensely experience the versatile Dutch seasons while fitting seamlessly into its natural surroundings. The small, black-clad structure was built on a site that once served as a sheep-grazing heather field for the local wool industry, and the design intentionally lacks barriers to fully connect with the nature outside. The house was constructed using sustainable and efficient techniques, featuring a prefabricated structure made of wood framing cassettes filled with flax insulation, which has a negative carbon footprint. This prefabricated method allowed for rapid construction, with the entire structure erected in just three days after the foundation was poured. The exterior is clad in black-stained timber, which helps the house blend in with the dark trunks of the surrounding trees. A unique feature of the exterior is a natural fungal coating specially cultivated to protect the siding, which also possesses a self-repairing capability. Inside, the interior is finished with birch plywood, reflecting the minimalist and natural aesthetic of the design. The pure construction method, where the structural framework serves as the finishing layer, contributed to a faster and more cost-effective build. Large, carefully placed windows act as "changing landscape paintings," providing dynamic views of the reserve throughout the year. Matte black accents on the interior doors, kitchen, and stair railings tie the inside aesthetic to the black exterior. The home is entirely self-sufficient, relying on solar and thermal panels for energy.
