RESIDENTIAL | House | 'Pleats' is a new 1850 SF, 3 sided courtyard house in the foothills of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. The foundation of the original house was reused and the space was redesigned to fit the bedrooms, including a primary suite that was lacking before. A new, gabled volume was added to take in mountain views and provide an indoor-outdoor great room with a perforated metal patio cover to ease the transition from the strong, sunlit exterior to the interior. A garage and workshop is tucked behind the house, completing the 3-sided courtyard. Aesthetically, the exterior of the house adopt elements of the Saguaro Cactus. The house draws its name, 'Pleats,' from the corrugated metal that wraps the gabled volume, reminiscent of the pleated exterior of the cactus. RESIDENTIAL | Cottage | Set against the rugged landscape of the Jizera Mountains in the Czech Republic, the Cottage Pod Bukovou by Mjölk architekti is a revitalization of an unfinished 1980s cabin. The project transformed the eccentric, derelict structure into an elegant and bold mountain retreat, consisting of a main cottage and a smaller annexed cabin that houses a sauna and a guest bedroom. The design draws on the atmosphere of the forest environment, where foggy, dreary weather can be "the best" for creating a cozy, contemporary interior. The most striking feature of the renovation is the exterior, where the original gray facade was completely replaced with vertical blackened timber paneling. The dark wood covers both the walls and the A-frame pitched roofs, giving both the main cottage and the sauna cabin a sculptural, abstract appearance where the roof, walls, and chimney merge into a single, unified shape. In contrast to the angular silhouette, some of the windows are cut into round shapes, evoking the feel of an oversized birdhouse. Inside the 85.5-square-meter main cottage, the layout was reorganized for greater efficiency while maintaining the original living space. The interior is simple and functional, with a cozy atmosphere created by the crackling fire in a large fireplace. The sleeping arrangements were changed to accommodate two bedrooms. A larger bedroom is accessed via a concealed staircase within a closet, while a second, smaller one is reached by a ladder from the kitchen. The architects also created a unique "sleeping window," a deep, cushioned alcove opposite the fireplace where an unexpected guest can sleep comfortably. CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE | Museum | The Broad is a new contemporary art museum founded by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles which opened in September of 2015. The museum offers free general admission. RESIDENTIAL | Studio | Nestled among the coastal dunes of Tasmania, the Dolphin Sands Studio by Matt Williams Architects is a compact and environmentally mindful retreat. The 36-square-meter cabin was designed as a temporary home for a couple while their main residence was being planned for the same property. Conceived as a "viewfinder," the studio's triangular, tapering form was specifically oriented to frame the spectacular views of Great Oyster Bay and the Freycinet Peninsula. This design philosophy focused the living space toward the landscape, with a large, fixed window and a bifold door creating a strong, immersive connection to the outdoors. The project's design was heavily guided by a low-impact and sustainable approach. The architects employed a Surefoot footing system, using driven stainless steel piles instead of concrete foundations, which minimized site disturbance and preserved the native dunes, flora, and fauna. This "light-touch" philosophy extended to the interior, where a limited and richly textured material palette was used. Oriented Strand Board (OSB) was chosen for the walls and joinery, eliminating the need for plasterboard and contributing to a simple, restful space. The flooring consists of black limestone pavers, adding a dark, grounding element that contrasts with the natural timber accents. The exterior is clad in durable silvertop ash, which weathers naturally and helps the cabin blend into its surroundings. Functionally, the studio is a self-contained unit, equipped with a combined living, kitchen, and sleeping area, along with an adjacent bathroom. CAMPING | Cabin | The Camper House, designed by architect Dani Serrano, is an experimental project in Nicaragua that integrates a refurbished campervan into a larger, purpose-built wooden structure. Created with a small budget and simple construction methods, the cabin serves as a vacation shelter for surfers while exploring minimalist living. The project's intention was to build an affordable, nature-infused dwelling by merging a travel trailer with a larger wooden construction. With minimal and primitive construction using basic tools, the design explores what is essential for a "magical holiday shelter". The cabin is located in Aposentillo, a rural surfing village on Nicaragua's northern Pacific coast. After traveling down the Pacific Coast in search of the perfect wave, Serrano purchased a half-acre plot and began the project, which was partially inspired by a four-month period of living exclusively out of his camper. The structure is built primarily from locally sourced teak wood and assembled with simple metal joints. A neighboring carpenter provided wood cuts, and a local welder fabricated the metal joist hangers. The exterior features a gently pitched, corrugated steel roof that protects the home from the rain and allows for ventilation. The camper itself was detached from its truck and placed on stilts, becoming the home's bedroom. The main living space, kitchen, and bathroom are housed within the new timber frame. A sliding teak and fabric partition allows the main living area to open entirely to the surrounding landscape, blurring the line between interior and exterior. The area beneath the raised camper is used for storage, primarily for surfboards. Windows on the back facade are covered by wooden panels that can be raised and lowered using ropes and pulleys. Created with a small budget and simple construction methods, the cabin serves as a vacation shelter for surfers while exploring minimalist living. The project's intention was to build an affordable, nature-infused dwelling by merging a travel trailer with a larger wooden construction. With minimal and primitive construction using basic tools, the design explores what is essential for a "magical holiday shelter". The cabin is located in Aposentillo, a rural surfing village on Nicaragua's northern Pacific coast. After traveling down the Pacific Coast in search of the perfect wave, Serrano purchased a half-acre plot and began the project, which was partially inspired by a four-month period of living exclusively out of his camper. The structure is built primarily from locally sourced teak wood and assembled with simple metal joints. A neighboring carpenter provided wood cuts, and a local welder fabricated the metal joist hangers. The exterior features a gently pitched, corrugated steel roof that protects the home from the rain and allows for ventilation. The camper itself was detached from its truck and placed on stilts, becoming the home's bedroom. The main living space, kitchen, and bathroom are housed within the new timber frame. A sliding teak and fabric partition allows the main living area to open entirely to the surrounding landscape, blurring the line between interior and exterior. The area beneath the raised camper is used for storage, primarily for surfboards. Windows on the back facade are covered by wooden panels that can be raised and lowered using ropes and pulleys. Paper lanterns and spotlights inside the cabin cause it to radiate a warm glow at night, appearing like a lantern from the outside. Project credits Architect: Dani Serrano. RESIDENTIAL | House | Located in a small hamlet in the heights of Bruson, this mayen—a traditional Swiss mountain hut or cottage typically made of stone and wood, often used as a seasonal or year-round residence in alpine regions—was close to collapse when it was purchased with the intention of being transformed by a couple who fell in love with the area. Previously, there was no basement, and the mayen rested directly on the ground. To make it habitable, a masonry foundation was constructed, and an extension was added at the rear, upstream, which houses two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a technical room. Upstairs, the approximately 35 square meters available were entirely dedicated to the living space and multiple storage areas. Inside, the chosen materials alternate between modernity and tradition, with a prominent use of larch. RESIDENTIAL | House | The House Giacomelli Schmid, completed in 2016 by Swiss firm Caminada Architekten, is a distinctive family home located in the village of Trin-Mulin, in the Grisons region of Switzerland. Situated amongst a loose arrangement of single-family houses, the house stands out with its powerful yet minimalist architecture, set against the backdrop of an impressive mountain range. The design, characterized by a "hard shell, soft core" approach, is a thoughtful response to both its alpine environment and the clients' needs. The exterior presents a fortress-like shell of raw, vertically-formed concrete. The light color of the concrete is a result of using local cement, giving the structure an authentic, unpretentious feel. This robust outer shell is designed to withstand the harsh alpine climate. In contrast, the interior features a fully wooden core, bringing warmth and a sense of coziness to the living spaces. The house has an almost square footprint and a steep gable roof, reflecting a contemporary take on traditional alpine building. The design is precisely placed within the landscape to maximize views of the impressive mountain scenery. A single-storey annex flanks the main building, anchoring it into the sloping terrain. This addition not only defines the main entrance but also provides two covered parking spaces. The interior is organized around the self-supporting wooden core, which serves as a central hub for the split-level arrangement of the rooms. Rooms are arranged on half-stories around the central core, creating a continuous flow of space and providing access to the different areas. RESIDENTIAL | Container Home | Elo Studio is a compact, 15-square-meter container home designed by the São Paulo-based architecture and interior practice Ticiane Lima Arquitetura & Interiores. Completed in 2020 as a prototype for the Janelas CASACOR 2020 exhibition, the project was conceived as a response to the post-pandemic context, reflecting on how living spaces could be rethought for well-being. RESIDENTIAL | House | The Black Timber House, designed by HAPA Architects, is a contemporary eco-home located on the edge of the village of Rodmell, within the South Downs National Park in East Sussex, England. Completed in 2022, the award-winning residence is situated in a bucolic context, replacing a mid-century bungalow that had a less harmonious relationship with the landscape. The design is a sensitive and modern response to its setting, nestled among ash trees and fields, with its dark timber exterior allowing it to recede softly into the scenery. The house was conceived with a strong focus on sustainability, with the goal of creating a home that respects its surroundings and has minimal energy consumption. HAPA Architects employed a range of passive and active strategies to achieve this. Key features include an A-rated Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), high levels of insulation and air tightness, and a passive solar design. The house also generates its own power via photovoltaic (PV) panels on the roof and uses a high-efficiency air source heat pump for low-temperature underfloor heating. HOSPITALITY | Modular House | The Nomad Houses are a cluster of eco-friendly, modern modular homes designed by ZROBIM Architects as part of the BY HOME modular housing ecosystem. Completed in 2023, the homes function as a glamping-style eco-hotel and are situated in the Braslav Lakes National Park in Belarus. The project was developed to promote domestic tourism by creating stylish, modern architecture that complements the region's pristine natural landscape, known for its glacial lakes and relict forests. The architectural design is characterized by Scandinavian minimalism, focusing on modularity, natural materials, panoramic glazing, and expansive terraces. The homes come in several types—including Camp B, Camp C, Camp C Flat, and a SPA module—varying in size from 17 to 55 square meters to accommodate different group sizes. The modular system allows for flexible expansion over time, enabling the complex to grow with demand. The exterior features a "total black" aesthetic, with facades and terraces finished in charcoal-black wood and corrugated roofing in the same shade, allowing the buildings to blend seamlessly with the surrounding pine forest. The interior continues the minimalist theme, using a natural color palette of wood, white, and anthracite accents. This design choice provides a serene and uncluttered environment, shifting focus from the interior to the natural beauty outside.
