The 19.8-square-meter cabin was part of a broader project to provide additional housing for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, with a focus on sustainable construction and a minimal footprint in a pristine natural setting. The exterior is defined by a black sheet metal cladding and a hipped roof, with large windows creating a dynamic contrast with the sunlight. This dark and angular form sets it apart from its surroundings while its small scale keeps the environmental impact low. The interior maximizes its small area by creating a double-height volume and utilizing a minimalist, fully wooden finish. A steep staircase doubles as a storage space, leading to a garret that houses a large bed. The simple interior features built-in elements, including a kitchen and bathroom. The interior is painted in a warm yellow, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The combination of a large bed in the loft, a built-in kitchen, and a small bathroom provides all the necessary amenities within a compact and efficient layout. Completed in 2019, the house is celebrated for its sensitive integration into the hilly, coastal landscape, reflecting the firm's philosophy of creating "caring architecture" that forms a connection between place, material, and history. The house is designed as a contemporary interpretation of a traditional gabled home, but its form is meticulously adapted to its specific location. The building is positioned close to a steep northern slope, with large windows strategically placed to frame views over the surrounding landscape and bay, making the setting an integral part of the living experience. The interior is arranged as a split-level space, following the natural topography of the land. This creates distinct living zones while maintaining a fluid, open atmosphere and a continuous visual connection with the outdoors. The home features a complex, silvery gabled roofline that is both dramatic and subtle. A central, double-height living area gives way to smaller, more private spaces, with a large, elevated deck that extends the living space outdoors. The design relies on a restrained palette of materials chosen for their durability, elegance, and ability to harmonize with the natural environment. The facade is clad in silvery wood, giving the house a clean, weathered aesthetic that allows it to blend into the coastal landscape. The interior features wood throughout, including CLT (cross-laminated timber) walls and plywood finishes, which give the space a warm, natural, and minimalist feel. The interior design emphasizes clean lines and functional simplicity, ensuring that the focus remains on the expansive views and the surrounding nature. The project was completed in 2017 for the founder of Q-Drinks and his family. What began as a plan for a rustic getaway for two evolved during the design process to accommodate a family of four, necessitating an expanded footprint while still working with the limited area of accessible rock. The design embraces the site's challenging topography rather than trying to flatten it. The angular, faceted form of the cabin is lifted off the ground by nine hand-poured concrete footings, a system chosen to minimize the structure's impact on the sloped site and surrounding tree roots. The house is a compelling marriage of modern design and prefabrication technology, which enabled the construction on the remote and rugged site to be completed more efficiently. The prefabricated timber frame components were engineered and CNC-cut off-site by Bensonwood and delivered ready for assembly, which reduced construction time and site disturbance. The cabin's exterior combines matte black metal siding and contrasting timber, with the geometric form creating a structure that appears to transform depending on the viewer's vantage point. A cantilevered timber porch extends dramatically over the rock's ledge, framing stunning views across the valley below. Large sections of full-height glazing, including a 24-foot-wide sliding glass window wall, maximize natural light and offer expansive views of the surrounding forest and mountains. The interior features a minimal aesthetic, designed to feel like one large, connected space. In 2018, the Cabin on a Rock received a Golden A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category. The project transformed an old, abandoned agricultural shed, formerly used to store fodder and tools, into a secondary residence for a client who lives in France. The intervention was conceived to preserve the rural identity and the original structure of the building, without modifying its main volume. The architecture is characterized by its focus on reuse and integration with the natural environment. The design consisted of wrapping the existing masonry structure with a new, permeable wooden skin. This outer membrane not only conceals the new functional programs but also creates interstitial spaces that expand the use of the home. The project seeks to pay homage to the humble typology of the Uruguayan countryside while transforming it into a poetic architectural gesture. The interior is a diaphanous volume with an open plan, defined by a furniture wall that integrates the kitchen, pantry, and a desk. Above the dining area, a loft houses the bed and wardrobes. The bathroom and service areas remain in an external volume, honoring the rural traditions of Uruguay. Large windows capture views of the landscape, while subtle natural light enters through narrow slits in the wooden membrane, accentuating texture and depth. The 68-square-meter home is a modern interpretation of the traditional Icelandic turf house, designed to blend into the landscape by appearing as a continuation of the earth mounds surrounding it. The roof is covered with wild grass and heather, with rainwater channeled through open copper fittings between the northern gables. The house is partially embedded within the grassy landscape, with walls that are either earth-covered or composed of large, glazed sections that provide panoramic views of the surroundings. This design allows for a strong connection to the spectacular landscape, creating the sense of a hidden retreat. The external walls are of the same in-situ concrete as the interior, with some areas featuring columnar basalt masonry. The interior boasts a simple and minimalist aesthetic, with concrete floors and large windows that connect the living spaces to the expansive outdoors. Completed in 2023, the cabin was built on the repurposed concrete foundation of the original structure, which had been destroyed by extreme weather. This approach minimized the project's environmental impact and maximized existing resources, both material and cultural. Located in Skarðsströnd, the cabin is part of a broader development by Studio Bua of former farm buildings into a home, cultural spaces, and additional guesthouses. The project is named after the Nypurhyrna mountain that rises up from behind it. The cabin features a deliberately simple, jet-black corrugated steel exterior that references the local vernacular and protects against the harsh Icelandic weather. Its off-center pitched roof echoes the distinctive shape of one of the area's dominant mountain peaks. The interior features exposed cross-laminated timber (CLT) walls, which create a warm and cozy atmosphere. The space is divided into two independent units: a workspace with living quarters for the artist and her husband, and a self-contained mini-apartment for guests. Salvaged materials were incorporated throughout the project, including a staircase from a historic Reykjavík building and kitchen units from a 1950s apartment.
