TEMPORARY STRUCTURES | Observation Post | Nestled within the Figuerolles national park near Saint-Mitre-les-Remparts, France, the Figuerolles watchtower by OH!SOM architectes is a small wooden cabin designed for a seasonal forest ranger. The project was conceived as a replacement for a series of temporary lookout structures used each summer to protect the Mediterranean forest during the high fire season. The design aims to be simple, efficient, and harmonious with its forest surroundings, providing a comfortable living and working space for the guard. The structure, elevated on steel poles, is a 27-square-meter cabin constructed almost entirely from wood, chosen for its sustainable and local sourcing and its natural integration with the environment. The cabin features two levels, with the upper level serving as the watch post, and the lower level as the living area. Its design is based on two intersecting cubic forms, defined by the wood cladding and large windows that offer panoramic views of the forest. The modular construction was planned for minimal disturbance to the site, allowing for quick assembly. For five months each year, from June to October, the watchtower becomes the forest ranger's home. The design prioritizes the guard's comfort and well-being during this long, solitary period. The compact living space includes a kitchenette and sleeping area, while the elevated watch post provides a secure and optimal vantage point for fire detection. The watchtower's striking design and responsible use of natural materials make it a distinctive and functional presence in the park, contributing both to its conservation and to the architectural conversation around sustainable, temporary structures. • The Beacon | studio appelo | ZHIG

HOSPITALITY | House | Completed in 2021, The Beacon is a 200-square-meter hospitality building located on the rural Unbound estate on the outskirts of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Designed by Studio Appelo, the project is a modern interpretation of a traditional rural building, created to serve as a versatile gathering space for guests. The design is notable for its combination of traditional techniques, such as the use of trusses, with modern, prefabricated elements, including the walls and roof. This approach results in an aesthetic of authentic craftsmanship while significantly reducing construction time, costs, and environmental impact. The exterior is constructed from local, clay-based raw Oberon bricks and unfinished, native spruce, which helps the building integrate organically with its natural environment. The interior and exterior are connected by two large, barn door-style shutters that can completely open or close the huge windows. When fully open, the shutters align perfectly with the walls, blurring the line between inside and out. This connection is enhanced by the use of brick flooring that extends from the masonry steps outside into the interior. Inside, a fireplace acts as a central focal point, creating a powerful backdrop for the variety of activities the space can host. The structure was designed to be easily imagined as a stage for performances or other events. • The Lake Cabin | RX Architects | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Lake Cabin is a modern retreat located on the edge of a lake in Brabourne, within the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in South East England. Designed by RX Architects, the cabin is approached on foot via a woodland trail, as it is not accessible by vehicles. The project reflects a "sense of place," using natural materials to create a strong visual connection between the structure and its rural environment. The 35-square-meter cabin is designed with an exposed timber frame and features two full glazed elevations that angle out toward the water. These sliding glass walls open up to a cantilevered deck that hovers over the water, providing seamless access for activities like swimming and kayaking. The building is clad in a mix of rough-sawn and planed English oak planks, which are left unfinished to weather naturally over time and integrate further with the landscape. A concrete base acts as a datum line, stepping up to form a bench and log store. The roof and its trims are clad in a contrasting patinated bronze finish. Inside, the cabin features a restrained, open-plan layout with a garden room, kitchen, and a wet room on the main level. Wide-format Douglas Fir boards line the interior walls, adding to the cabin's natural, rustic feel. A mezzanine level provides a sleeping area. The entire design is oriented toward maximizing views of the lake and surrounding countryside. • House in Nishizaki | studio cochi architects | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | Completed in 2023, the House in Nishizaki is a private residence located on reclaimed land in Okinawa, Japan, and designed by Studio Cochi Architects for a family of three. Situated within a dense and mixed-use urban landscape, the 91-square-meter concrete house was conceived as an "urban oasis" that provides a tranquil, private living environment while adapting to Okinawa's humid climate and typhoon-prone conditions. To achieve privacy and buffer the inhabitants from the bustling surroundings, Studio Cochi Architects enclosed the house in a fortress-like shell of thick, exposed concrete walls, minimizing exterior-facing windows. Instead of relying on conventional windows, the architects integrated two north-south oriented courtyards and a skylight to draw in natural light and promote ventilation. The north-facing courtyard, with its gradual buffer zone, connects with a tatami room and the main entrance, while the south-facing courtyard creates a thick, solid buffer from the busy commercial district. The house's interior is defined by a raw and minimalist aesthetic, with the concrete shell left exposed, complemented by precise geometric compositions and lines. The ground floor contains public areas, such as the living room, kitchen, and tatami room, and the upper floor is reserved for more private spaces, including the bedrooms and bathrooms. The staircase leading to the upper floor is wider than typical to serve as a secondary seating area. By carefully controlling the interplay of light and solid surfaces, Studio Cochi Architects created a series of intimate, serene spaces that offer refuge from the chaotic urban environment. • Hiša Š | Her arhitektura | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | Inspired by the traditional farmhouse and hayrack that once occupied the site, Her arhitektura's Hiša Š is a striking and sympathetic reinterpretation of rural vernacular architecture, situated in a small farming hamlet in Slovenia. The 262 m2 residence balances traditional form with contemporary expression, integrating itself harmoniously with its surroundings through a thoughtful use of material and structure. The design is intrinsically shaped by the sloping terrain of the site. A partially underground basement, constructed from exposed concrete, anchors the home, providing a grounded counterpoint to the warm wooden structure above. This lower level accommodates practical spaces such as a large garage and service areas, as well as a more rustic "country-style room". The main living spaces are located on the upper floor, where the ceiling soars dramatically to the roof ridge, revealing the exposed timber frame and creating a sense of spaciousness. A sleeping area is also on this floor, with a gallery above it designed as a flexible and playful space for the owners' grandchildren. A key architectural element that bridges the new design with the regional building traditions is the covered porch, or gank, on the eastern side of the building. This external corridor connects the rooms on the ground floor, functioning as both a practical pathway and a symbolic link to the communal outdoor spaces of historic rural dwellings. This gesture, along with the prominently visible timber frame and the use of natural materials, ensures the new build feels both modern and deeply connected to its alpine setting. The interior of Hiša Š contrasts the rustic wooden structure with a clean, contemporary aesthetic. Modern furniture and materials are balanced with carefully chosen color accents and wallpaper. A notable feature is the suspended, rotating fireplace, which serves as a central point of life during colder months. In warmer weather, the living area can be extended outdoors onto a terrace and towards the pool area, which is cleverly shielded from the road by a green barrier. Through this project, Her arhitektura successfully delivered a home that respectfully nods to its heritage while providing a distinctly modern and functional space for its inhabitants. • Silver Residence | Studio Nocturne | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | A Family and a Meadow The Silver Residence is a mountain retreat from the city for an extended family. The unique landscape inspired our approach to design. The home is located in the western foothills of the North Cascades, known for its rainy temperate forests. This site presented us with an unexpected opportunity, as if carved out of the surrounding evergreens and ferns, a meadow dotted with mature Big Leaf Maple trees. Standing in the heart of the meadow, it felt like we had left the present and stepped into a fairytale or pastoral scene from the past. The only thing missing from this picture was a home and people to populate the scene. Picturing a Home in the Landscape We wanted the home to be as if it were a repurposed ruin that one had stumbled upon. We turned to tools from the English Picturesque to situate the house in the landscape so that it could participate in one’s experience of the meadow as a character in the scene. The home itself was designed as an arrangement of different buildings, with each serving separate functions. The home’s communal spaces are located in the large wooden building reminiscent of nearby wooden barns. The more private functions of the house are located in more contemporary corrugated volumes, situated as additions toward the forest. These two halves of the home are mediated by a white wall that runs the length of the building, structuring space and contributing to the composition like a three-dimensional canvas. • Shelter | Grau Architects | ZHIG

SHELTERS | Cabin | The Shelter, designed by Slovakian-based Grau Architects, is a minimalist hiking refuge located on the SNP trail in the Slovak Ore Mountains. The project, an initiative of the hikers' association Hikemates, was completed in 2022 and provides a simple, year-round rest stop and meeting point for tourists and hikers at an altitude of 850 meters. The design prioritizes practicality and functionality over aesthetics, aiming for a utilitarian interior free of unnecessary elements while still providing optimal comfort. The 30-square-meter cabin features a straightforward, pragmatic layout designed for efficient use. To the right of the entrance are tiered sleeping platforms that span the height of the cabin, while to the left is a dining area with a small stove. Storage shelves are integrated for luggage and food. The building is set on road panels to protect it from moisture, and its pitched roof extends beyond the entrance to provide a sheltered entryway. Constructed entirely of wood, the Shelter's exterior is clad in black-stained spruce boards, allowing it to blend seamlessly into the forest environment. The frame is hinged and reinforced with black-grey stained pine plywood from the inside. For insulation, a horizontal grate of spruce prisms is used, filled with thermal insulation, and covered with a vapor-permeable foil. The roof consists of spruce prisms with insulation and is covered with corrugated galvanized sheet metal. The dark facade is accented by a vibrant blue-painted window frame and a red table, adding a playful touch of color to the otherwise monochromatic exterior. • House in Zbraslav (Zigzag) | Martin Neruda Architektura | ZHIG

HOSPITALITY | House | The House in Zbraslav, also referred to as the Zigzag House, is a family residence in the Czech Republic that was rebuilt by Martin Neruda Architektura after being damaged by fire. Completed in 2021, the project involved saving a single-family house on a corner plot in the village of Baně, southeast of Zbraslav. The fire had destroyed the ceilings and roof, but the architectural alterations honored the original footprint and volume of the historic village home. The renovation introduced a new, striking element: a hidden, underground garage integrated into the site's redesign. Above the garage, a green slope was created, enhancing the existing garden and blending seamlessly into the landscape. In addition to preserving the core structure, the reconstruction added a new glazed vestibule and terrace, which significantly updated the house's connection to its surroundings. RESIDENTIAL | ADU | The Simpson St ADU is a 575-square-foot Accessory Dwelling Unit in the Concordia neighborhood of Portland, Oregon, designed by Polyphon Architecture & Design. The project's unique solution was to place the ADU in front of the primary residence, which was set back far on the property, while still providing ample space for a driveway and access to the main house. The design addresses the narrow building envelope by using a split-level layout. This strategic arrangement allowed the ADU to maximize its internal space while remaining within the side setback requirements. • Cabin Anna | Caspar Schols | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The "Cabin ANNA" is a versatile and innovative prefabricated dwelling designed by Dutch designer Caspar Schols. It is an evolution of a garden house Schols originally created for his mother in 2016, which was celebrated for its reconfigurable, sliding layers. The design allows inhabitants to interact with nature by adjusting the cabin's shells to suit different weather conditions, occasions, or moods. The cabin is defined by its two main sliding "shells" that move on a rail system. Outer shell: A protective, insulated wooden layer made of sustainable Accoya wood. Inner shell: A transparent glass layer featuring high-quality, double-glazed windows. This dynamic design allows for several different configurations: Fully closed: Both the wooden and glass shells are closed to create a cozy, insulated space. Glass mode: The wooden outer shell is retracted to reveal the inner glass shell, offering panoramic views while remaining protected from the elements. Open-air: Both shells are slid open to fully expose the interior to nature, creating an open-air living platform. The flexibility enables residents to live with the elements rather than against them, fostering a deep connection with nature. The modular design is built on a wooden platform and relies on high-quality, natural materials. The structure draws inspiration from railway station trusses, relying on the side walls for stability. Minimal ecological impact is ensured through a screw foundation, which allows the cabin to be disassembled and relocated without a trace. The interior features birch plywood, creating a warm, light-filled atmosphere. A fixed section of the cabin houses essential facilities, including a kitchen, shower, toilet, and storage space. A loft provides a second sleeping area. Some versions of the cabin include a sunken bathtub integrated into the floor, which can be concealed when not in use. Cabin ANNA can be equipped for off-grid living with a fire-heated boiler, a solar energy system, and a water treatment system. Project credits Designer: Caspar Schols. • Jelovac House | Studio Synthesis Architecture & Design | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | Jelovac House, more formally known as Chalet Jelovac, is a multi-purpose family house completed in 2017 in Kolašin, Montenegro, and designed by Studio Synthesis Architecture & Design. Situated in the sensitive landscape near Park Forest in Dulovine Village at an altitude of 1000 meters, the home is a sustainable and resilient interpretation of a traditional mountain chalet, intended for year-round use. It serves as a holiday home for the architect's family, as well as a location for research and architectural workshops. The design is a response to the location's specific characteristics, including its lush forest and extreme weather conditions. The architectural concept blends traditional forms with modern design, and the structure is integrated into its surroundings with a compact form and a black roof. The exterior is clad in "lučevine" wood, which is locally sourced and was treated to withstand the elements. One of the most notable features is the use of adaptable shutters that, when closed, make the building resemble a "haystack" in winter, improving its thermal efficiency. The 300-square-meter house is designed across four levels, providing a dynamic mix of functions. Large glazed surfaces connect the indoor and outdoor spaces, framing views of the landscape, while the interior is filled with natural light. The basement and attic are dedicated to creative and research activities, while the ground floor contains the main living areas, including a living room, kitchen, and dining area. The upper floor features additional themed rooms with framed views. The chalet is also energy-efficient, with thick timber and aluminum walls and a sophisticated heating and cooling system. Snøhetta first significant commission was in 1989 for Bibliotheca Alexandrina, reviving the ancient library in Alexandria, Egypt. This was followed by commissions for the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in Oslo and the National September 11 Memorial Museum Pavilion at the World Trade Center in New York City. • New Eliel and Asema Square | Snøhetta | ZHIG

URBAN PLANNING | Public space | With the mission to revitalize the area of Eliel and Asema squares downtown Helsinki, the concept “Klyyga” was developed. Translated into “the crossing” in local slang, Klyyga aims to both fit in and add to contemporary Helsinki. The project emphasizes on the two city grids that meets at these squares, Elielinaukio and Asema-aukio, and the aim is to create a vibrant new plaza and city block, supporting the Helsinki urban strategy: To make the city center more vibrant and accelerate green mobility. Klyyga stands for a system of crossings to reconnect city, urban landscape, and people to create a dynamic and livable area west of the historical railway station – inviting to in- and outdoor social interaction, green environments, openness and equality for citizens, visitors, and travelers. We share our name with a beautiful, remote, and historically important mountain in central Norway. Snøhetta is a place nobody is from, but anyone can experience. Creating places for societies to connect with each other and with the world around them is a primary motivation in our work. Dialogue and diversity empower this approach. Since those early projects, many other internationally acclaimed works have been realized around the globe. source: snohetta.com Category Public space Post Type Building Project Type URBAN PLANNING Country Finland Year Area 27.000m2 Client Realidea Oy Photographers www.zhiig.com Premium Member Interior designer Riikka Kekkonen Collaborate 3D Design Suggest Materials Suggest Product Add Request Design © ZHIG Team Materials Suggested by Manufacturers: Model Full Name Details Details View more

  • House T | Katsutoshi Sasaki + Associates | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | Completed in 2017, the T House, also known as T noie, is a 102-square-meter family home located in Toyota, Japan, and designed by Katsutoshi Sasaki + Associates. The architects were inspired by both the human and urban scale, creating a structure with unusual proportions designed for both intimate comfort and spacious openness. The design is based on two different dimensional scales: a narrow width of 1.55 meters, which promotes a feeling of human closeness and coziness, and a soaring eight-meter ceiling, which creates a sense of openness and reflects the scale of the surrounding urban streetscape. These two scales coexist within the home, with different floors loosely connected to encourage movement and interaction. The interior is arranged across platforms that are staggered along a spiral staircase, allowing inhabitants to share the same space even when in different rooms. The house features a striking dark exterior clad in red cedar planks, giving it a minimalist and private appearance with few windows. In contrast, the interior is finished in light Falcata plywood, creating a bright and airy atmosphere. Natural light enters the house primarily through clerestory windows that wrap around the top of the walls, filtering soft light into the interior throughout the day. The T-shaped structure was developed with a unique joint pillar-and-beam system to create a new way of living within the traditional Japanese dimensional framework. • Hofer Pavilion | Stal Collectief | ZHIG

MULTI-FUNCTIONAL | Shelter | The Hofer Pavilion is an experimental, 28-square-meter studio designed and self-built by Stal Collectief, a Belgian furniture design company. Completed in 2016, the pavilion is situated near the collective's existing workshop in Heppeneert, a hamlet in northeast Belgium, and was created as a retreat for brainstorming sessions and design discussions. Mimicking the traditional, archetypical shape of a rural gabled home, it blends into its surroundings. A key feature of the pavilion is its adaptability to different weather conditions and uses. The structure is elevated on ten pillars and features a unique rail system that allows three of its four walls and the roof to be moved. This design makes it possible to open the studio to the elements during warmer seasons, transforming the interior into an open-air living space, and enclose it during winter for a more intimate setting. The exterior is clad in charred timber using the traditional Japanese shou sugi ban technique, giving it a dark, rustic appearance that references the local vernacular. The fixed gable wall and floor, in contrast, are finished with sheet metal. The interior is minimally furnished with a long table, stools, lighting, and a wood-burning stove built into the fixed wall.
