    HOSPITALITY | Cabin | Built and designed by UK-based Koto Design and Koto Living, the Ash Cabin is one of three bespoke cabins that make up the "Trees at Tughall" boutique hotel, located on the Northumberland coast of England and completed around 2022. Situated in a secluded wood on Tughall Grange Farm, the cabin retreat draws inspiration from the region's traditional beach shacks and fishermen's sheds. The cabins, including Ash, Hawthorn, and Willow, were designed with a minimalist, Scandinavian-Japanese aesthetic, often referred to as "Japandi".     RESIDENTIAL | Tiny Home | Completed in 2019, Monte House is a 42-square-meter compact vacation home designed by TACO taller de arquitectura contextual for a young couple. Located on a 10,000-square-meter plot in the wild landscape of southeastern Mexico, the house is a secluded retreat that encourages contemplation and a close connection to its natural surroundings. The structure is a simple and compact two-story volume set on a platform elevated off the ground. This elevation helps protect against undesirable animals and facilitates construction on the site's rocky terrain, which prevented excavation. The home is strategically oriented to work with the region's dominant winds and sun exposure, ensuring a comfortable interior temperature. The exterior and interior are finished with a rough stucco and an artisanal lime-based paint with mineral pigments, giving the building a natural, reddish tone that blends with the surrounding soil. Regional cedar wood is used for the folding doors and operable louvers, allowing residents to control the amount of privacy and connection to the outdoors. A pre-existing tree provides shade for the swimming pool and terrace, an extension of the interior social area. The compact interior includes a double-height living room with a kitchenette, a sleeping mezzanine, and a bathroom with an outdoor shower.   • The Author's House | SLETH architects | ZHIG

    RESIDENTIAL | House | Completed in 2020, The Author's House is a private, 68-square-meter writing and living retreat designed by Danish architectural firm SLETH. Situated in a protected forest near Aarhus, Denmark, the cabin is a contemporary interpretation of the classic woodland cabin, designed to harmonize with its natural surroundings. It was built on the existing plinth of a previous summer house, adhering to the area's strict building regulations. The client, a writer, sought an inspirational workspace that offered a close connection to nature, rather than a traditional holiday home. This focus on work over residence is reflected in the layout, which dedicates most of the space to a large, flexible living and studio area, with only a small sleeping loft and bathroom. The design emphasizes the transition between inside and out. Large, sliding glass doors allow the interior to extend onto an outdoor terrace, a feature that allows the writer to work in direct connection with the forest. The exterior is clad in a dark, reddish-brown copper, chosen to blend with the trunks of the surrounding beech trees and a nearby lake. This copper façade will naturally patinate over time, gradually turning green to further integrate the structure into the landscape. Inside, the material palette is warm and natural. The flooring, a mottled aggregate concrete, mimics the forest floor and extends out onto the terrace to blur the line between interior and exterior spaces. The interior is dominated by Douglas fir wood from Danish manufacturer Dinesen, used for the ceilings, built-in furniture, kitchen, staircase, and the home's walls, which are also lined with bookcases. In a splash of vibrant color, the fireplace is painted in a deep, electric blue. The project also features sustainable measures, including geothermal heating and an efficient use of materials, where leftover wood planks were used for additional furnishings.     CULTURAL | Studio | The Dovecote Studio is a striking piece of adaptive reuse architecture designed by Haworth Tompkins for the internationally renowned Snape Maltings music campus in Suffolk, England. Completed in 2009, the 30-square-meter studio is built within the dramatic, derelict brick ruins of a 19th-century dovecote, which sits prominently on the edge of the marshes overlooking the North Sea. The design approach was to preserve the poetic decay of the existing ruin while inserting a contrasting modern structure within it. Haworth Tompkins achieved this by creating a self-supporting, watertight, monocoque structure from Corten steel. This prefabricated "shell," welded together on-site like the hull of a ship, was craned into place in a single day. The weathering Corten steel gives the new intervention a reddish, rustic patina that complements the aged red bricks of the original dovecote. Minimal repairs were made to the Victorian brickwork, and existing vegetation was protected, allowing the ruin to continue its natural process of decay. The interior is lined with pale spruce plywood, creating a warm, timber "box" within the steel shell. Created for a multi-generational family, the cabin serves as a guest studio, artist's workspace, and rural escape. Its design prioritizes flexibility and a deep connection to its natural surroundings. The minimalist design, with its simple volume and use of local materials, references traditional regional farming architecture. The cabin is intended as a subtle, understated space that enhances the client's favorite spot on their property, a place for painting and playing pétanque. The 35 m² cabin is carefully positioned on a rural property outside Marseille, hidden from both the main farmhouse and local roads. It is oriented to the east to capture the gentle morning sunlight and offer expansive valley views. A dense pine forest on the south side provides natural shading from the intense Mediterranean sun. Conceived as a modern and low-impact alternative to camping, the huts were designed for a client who wanted to provide guest accommodations on the site of a former RV campground while allowing the landscape to return to its natural state. The cabins sit on oversized steel wheels, a creative solution to local zoning regulations that prohibited permanent structures but permitted RVs. This wheeled foundation elevates the huts a short distance above the meadow, allowing native grasses to grow underneath and minimizing the human footprint on the sensitive environment. The 200-square-foot cabins, completed in 2008, are essentially minimalist, steel-clad boxes on a steel and wood platform. Created with a small budget and simple construction methods, the cabin serves as a vacation shelter for surfers while exploring minimalist living. The project's intention was to build an affordable, nature-infused dwelling by merging a travel trailer with a larger wooden construction. With minimal and primitive construction using basic tools, the design explores what is essential for a "magical holiday shelter". The cabin is located in Aposentillo, a rural surfing village on Nicaragua's northern Pacific coast. After traveling down the Pacific Coast in search of the perfect wave, Serrano purchased a half-acre plot and began the project, which was partially inspired by a four-month period of living exclusively out of his camper. The structure is built primarily from locally sourced teak wood and assembled with simple metal joints. A neighboring carpenter provided wood cuts, and a local welder fabricated the metal joist hangers. The exterior features a gently pitched, corrugated steel roof that protects the home from the rain and allows for ventilation. The camper itself was detached from its truck and placed on stilts, becoming the home's bedroom. The main living space, kitchen, and bathroom are housed within the new timber frame. A sliding teak and fabric partition allows the main living area to open entirely to the surrounding landscape, blurring the line between interior and exterior. The area beneath the raised camper is used for storage, primarily for surfboards. Windows on the back facade are covered by wooden panels that can be raised and lowered using ropes and pulleys. Paper lanterns and spotlights inside the cabin cause it to radiate a warm glow at night, appearing like a lantern from the outside. Project credits Architect: Dani Serrano.
