RESIDENTIAL | House | Completed in 2023, the 1600-square-foot Telescope House is a retreat in the high-desert landscape of Sedona, Arizona, designed by Phoenix-based Wendell Burnette Architects. The house was commissioned by clients who, after visiting the area for decades, wanted a low-impact home that would serve as a seasonal retreat, a short-term rental, and eventually, their full-time residence. The house's design is inspired by the metaphor of a "land-based telescope" that frames specific views of the dramatic desert landscape. Situated on a gently sloping site on the footprint of a former building, the house is intentionally understated. The rectangular form is nestled between two rows of centuries-old Juniper trees that frame views of the iconic Cathedral Rock and Munds Mountain. Clad in weathering Corten steel and with steel-plate window frames, the exterior helps the building recede into the landscape like a "dark shadow," particularly at night, and offers excellent fire resistance. The interiors are designed as a "welcome respite for the eyes in the desert," with a minimalist, dark-toned palette. The floors, walls, ceilings, doors, and cabinets are crafted from FSC-certified recycled wood-dust panels impregnated with a dark pigment, then waxed and buffed. A telescopic central hall, with interior surfaces that step up and out, subtly directs attention toward the panoramic east-facing view. This layout connects the more private, cabinet-like bedroom and bathroom areas on the south to the main living, kitchen, and dining spaces at the east end. The house also incorporates sustainable features, including strategically shaded windows for passive solar heating in the winter, operable windows for cross ventilation, and the potential for a future photovoltaic array. A planned water-harvesting tank will further increase the home's self-sufficiency. - Hut-Inspired House | Atelier Hajný | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | House | Hut-Inspired House is a residential project in Říčany, Czech Republic, designed by Prague-based Atelier Hajný. Completed in 2023, the family home was built on the site of a holiday cabin that the client had frequented since childhood. As the surrounding area began to change with new zoning plans favoring family houses, the original, beloved hut was destined for demolition. To honor the client's nostalgic connection to the site, Atelier Hajný designed a new, modern home that subtly referenced the shape and appearance of the old cabins. The design for the 180-square-meter home successfully balances the sentimental and the contemporary. The house's elongated, gabled form, with its prominent roof and overhangs, reflects the familiar shape of the traditional huts once common in the area. The building appears as a single-family dwelling, but it is cleverly designed to contain two standalone studio apartments on the ground floor, in addition to the main two-story home. The exterior is clad in charred timber, a durable and natural material that gives the house a rustic yet modern aesthetic. Light wooden shading slats on the gable ends add visual interest and regulate sunlight. Integration with nature: A cantilevered balcony provides a sheltered outdoor space, while the design's overall form harmonizes with the changing character of the landscape. The 180-square-meter interior is designed to be warm, functional, and filled with natural light. Exposed cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels provide a warm, natural contrast to the darker facade. The ground floor contains the entrances to the two studio apartments, a technical area, and the main living room with an integrated kitchen. The upper floor is dedicated to the main apartment's private quarters, including bedrooms, a study, and a bathroom. Custom built-in furniture, including cabinetry made from oak and birch veneer, helps to optimize space and maintain a clean, uncluttered look. The Hut-Inspired House was designed with energy efficiency and modern comfort in mind. Features include: Electric underfloor heating. Recuperative air conditioning. Materials chosen for durability and sustainability, such as charred wood and CLT panels. Designed by Atelier Hajný and completed in 2024, the project transformed a derelict, 1970s single-story hut into a contemporary and airy two-story home. The clients, a couple from Prague, wanted a tranquil escape for weekends and remote work, but faced challenges from strict local zoning regulations. Atelier Hajný's design solution addressed the need for more space while adhering to a maximum height limit of 7.7 meters. The most distinctive feature is the truncated, asymmetrical hip roof, topped with a pair of skylights. This design minimized the building's overall height and prevented it from blocking the views of neighboring properties. The architects kept the original 1970s stone base, stripping the building to its foundation. A new, modern metal structure was then built upon this base, supported by a concrete slab and concealed pillars. The trapezoidal metal sheeting that clads the roof and façade gives the home a modern look while offering durability and minimal upkeep. The dark color helps the structure blend with the natural surroundings. The skylights not only provide natural light but also enable chimney ventilation, which, combined with a significant roof overhang, helps regulate the indoor climate throughout the year. Inside the 46-square-meter cabin, the design maximizes space and light to create a cozy and warm atmosphere. The interior is defined by an extensive use of light pine plywood with a prominent grain, which covers the walls, ceilings, and custom furniture. This contrasts with the dark, minimalist exterior, creating a brighter indoor environment. he ground floor features an open-plan layout connecting the living, dining, and kitchen areas. Large windows on the south and east sides provide dynamic views and flood the space with natural light. An attic bedroom is nestled under the asymmetrical roof, illuminated by the innovative skylight system. A small fireplace adds extra warmth and coziness to the main living area. The bathroom has a simple and modern aesthetic, with a gray plaster finish. - The Woodland Cabin | De Rosee Sa | ZHIG
STUDIOS | Cabin | The Woodland Cabin is a self-built, low-budget, 35-square-meter retreat in the village of Nouvelles, Belgium, designed and constructed by London-based architecture studio De Rosee Sa. The project showcases the studio's craftsmanship and creative use of materials by replacing a dilapidated structure with a modern guesthouse and studio. The cabin is a modern interpretation of a classic black hut found in rural areas, designed to blend into its fairytale-like surroundings. Its simple, lightweight, and economical design was inspired by the local rural vernacular and built to a tight budget. The structure is set on the edge of a wood next to a tranquil lake, with its openings strategically placed to frame views of the natural scenery. The timber cladding and exposed beams were milled from trees in the surrounding woods that had been damaged in a storm several years prior. The wood was blackened and sealed using a mixture of wood stain and recycled tractor engine oil, a low-cost, durable treatment typical of local agricultural buildings. The walls and floors are lined with Oriented Strand Board (OSB), a robust and cost-effective engineered panel that complements the exposed timber beams. The simple, open-plan interior is centered around a wood-burning stove and can be used for working, sleeping, and socializing. Exposed scissor rafters create a vaulted ceiling, making the small interior feel more spacious. Black-framed windows draw attention to the surrounding landscape, and glazed doors open onto a wraparound timber deck. A small bathroom is discreetly tucked into one corner, and a small, covered porch serves as a mudroom. Project credits Architects: De Rosee Sa. Project Lead: Max de Rosee, founder of the studio. COMMERCIAL/RESIDENTIAL | Mixed-use Building | Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof, which is located on Julius-Tandler-Platz in Vienna's 9th District, was opened in its current, familiar form in 1978 and, alongside its core function as a railway station, can look back over a richly varying history of use. Efforts that have been made in recent years to lend the location a contemporary character with the name “Althan Quartier” have included a number of urban design studies related to the question of how the existing buildings can be remodelled in line with a wide range of new requirements and best integrated into its urban context. In addition to gaining the acceptance of the neighbouring population, the decisive objectives of the development project included the permeability to pedestrians, the opening up to Julius-Tandler-Platz, the creation of the broadest possible mix of uses and the obligatory densification of a central urban zone. The concept developed by DMAA in cooperation with Josef Weichenberger architects + Partner attempts to meet these requirements by very precisely addressing the existing buildings. The arguments for retaining this existing built substance are not only ecological but also include the great spatial quality and flexibility of this modular structure, which is imbued with the spirit of modernism. The generous opening up of the base creates the desired spatial relationship with Julius-Tandler-Platz and increases the attractiveness of the station concourse while establishing an inviting connection between the new urban terrace and the central courtyard via the station, which becomes the focal point of the neighbouring spaces with their largely public functions. The internal spaces receive additional daylight via two new atria, which can be carved with minimum disruption out of the existing building. The densification is achieved through the construction of two new stories, which are stepped back in line with the contours of the building volume. The wide range of urban movement and meeting spaces, areas for local facilities, shops, services, offices and apartments will enable the Althan Quartier to do justice to its potential significance as an open neighbourhood centre that creates a strong sense of identity while also functioning as an inviting public transport hub. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/9756fd_20ab95f6400e4c33932af6efc5c678c0~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_1600,h_1512,al_c,q_90/Althan%20Quartier%20(5).jpg Please Wait Althan Quartier (1).jpg Althan Quartier (2).jpg Althan Quartier (4).jpg 1/3 0 Product 6.3K Views 0 0 Pin Pin Private Public x Appreciators Appreciated Appreciate Please Log in Althan Quartier Julius-Tandler-Platz 3, 1090 Vienna, Austria Architects: Delugan Meissl Associated Architects Delugan Meissl Associated Architects Architecture Office Austria Area: Year: City: Client: 69.402m² 2023 Vienna - Construction: - Category: COMMERCIAL/RESIDENTIAL Project Type: Mixed-use Building Post Type: Building Country: Austria Photographers: the architects Description: Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof, which is located on Julius-Tandler-Platz in Vienna's 9th District, was opened in its current, familiar form in 1978 and, alongside its core function as a railway station, can look back over a richly varying history of use. - Raus Cabin | Sigurd Larsen | ZHIG
HOSPITALITY | Cabin | Berlin-based hospitality company Raus collaborated with Danish architect Sigurd Larsen to design the Raus Cabin, a sustainable, off-grid micro-cabin. The prototype debuted in 2022 on the historic Wehrmühle Biesenthal estate, located near Berlin, with the broader concept being to place these self-sufficient cabins in natural landscapes across Germany. The project’s goal is to offer city dwellers a retreat from the hustle and bustle of urban life, providing an escape where they can reconnect with nature. The cabin, which occupies a compact 18-square-meter footprint, is designed to feel spacious and open through the use of high ceilings and extensive glazing. The design is a series of varying internal spaces that are aligned with the sun's movement throughout the day. For instance, the east-facing kitchen is filled with morning sunlight, while a small terrace off the bedroom provides a spot for watching the sunset. Panoramic windows and skylights connect the interior with the surrounding landscape, framing specific views and allowing light to filter in. The windows are a key feature, with a sliding section that opens to further immerse guests in the tranquil setting. The cabin is clad in charred and oiled larch wood, a dark exterior that allows it to blend seamlessly with the forest's dark tree trunks. The interiors, by contrast, are kept in an all-black theme, which prevents reflections on the large glass windows and draws focus to the external views. To maximize the small space, functional furniture is built into "cave-like" niches within the walls, creating a sense of both openness and protection. The space is fully self-sufficient, equipped with solar panels for energy, a composting toilet, and a water tank. RESIDENTIAL | House | The Wiggins house in Sumner, Christchurch, New Zealand, is a family home designed by Urbanfunction Architecture and completed in 2022. Facing challenges such as a narrow site in a flood zone and proximity to neighbors, the design incorporates a gable form and central axis as a nod to the site's original cottage. The layout includes staggered garage and living wings that create courtyards to enhance natural light indoors. The exterior combines Abodo Sioo:x timber cladding and reclaimed bricks at the entrance. Inside, a glass door provides a view through a hallway with lime plaster, leading to a bright, open-plan living area featuring a double-height ceiling and mezzanine. The interior design uses natural materials like reclaimed brick and timber, along with textured plaster and curves, to soften the space. Upstairs, windows offer views of the Port Hills, and there's a hidden room. - Kynttilä | ORTRAUM Architects | ZHIG
RETREAT & WELLNESS | Cabin | Named after the Finnish word for "candle," the Kynttilä cabin by ORTRAUM Architects is a tiny, sustainable meditation retreat located on a narrow, forested peninsula in eastern Finland. Sited on Lake Saimaa, near Savonlinna, the 15-square-meter cabin was designed with a Zen philosophy of "nothingness," stripping the design to its bare minimum to create a space for spiritual and visual focus. At night, the illuminated cabin shines on the lake like a warm candle, a key part of its design concept. The cabin was designed to minimize its impact on the protected nature reserve, and the process of building it reflects this commitment. To avoid damaging the forest vegetation, a temporary road was built for a single day to assemble the prefabricated structure. The vegetation was then restored to its original state once the construction was finished. The structure is primarily composed of cross-laminated timber (CLT), which is exposed on the interior to create a warm, minimalist, and natural aesthetic. The exterior is clad in larch boards, allowing the cabin to blend harmoniously with its surroundings. The gabled ends of the cabin feature full-height glazing, maximizing the connection to nature and providing panoramic views of the water on both sides of the peninsula. The interior includes built-in furniture and a sleeping bunk accessed by a ladder, demonstrating an efficient use of the compact space. - Findsanctuary Cabin | Narrative Design Studio | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Inspired by a need to balance modern life with regular immersion in nature, the Find Sanctuary cabins offer a retreat experience designed for both remote work and leisure. The pilot cabin, which was first launched and tested in California before being offered for sale, was manufactured by the Canadian company Drop Structures, with interiors designed by Narrative Design Studio. Instead of an "off-grid" solution for a crisis, the Find Sanctuary model is a preventative wellness tool aimed at incorporating regular, holistic connections with nature into a busy, modern lifestyle. The pilot cabin features a 323-square-foot floor plan and is equipped with modern comforts, including a California king-sized bed, a rain shower, a fully equipped kitchen, and an air conditioning/heating unit. The interior is finished with Baltic birch, chosen for its aesthetic, warmth, and strength, and features matte-black tile work and cabinetry for a modern, textured look. The exterior is clad in vertical grain Douglas fir, while black-painted metal frames expansive windows that capture views of the surrounding natural landscape, much like "a landscape painting". The cabin is also equipped with a panoramic desk for remote work, a breakfast bar, and a sleeping loft situated above the bathroom, which also has a skylight. A fold-out counter with stools and a push-out awning window further enhances the connection between the indoor space and the outdoors. The project has ambitions beyond individual rentals, with the founders exploring a "work-from-the-woods" employee benefits program that would allow companies to book cabins for their employees. - Modular house "TOPOL 27" | BIO-architects | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | We dreamed of creating a house that could be picked up from the warehouse by the client, installed the same day, and be ready to live, without wasting time on finishing, selecting furniture, kitchens, dishes, and decor. Our new development "TOPOL 27" is just that. We have placed all the functions in one module and you no longer need to assemble a house from separate blocks. There are 5 functional areas in 27 m²: a bedroom, a kitchen, a living room, a bathroom, and a dressing room - a maximum of comfortable space in a minimum area. All this delivers by one truck and simply installs on the foundation. The project uses environmentally friendly and durable materials suitable for active use for daily rent. Solid wood and natural oak veneer are combined with black metal elements. On the floor, wear-resistant and hypoallergenic FORBO Flotex material. A large amount of glass harmoniously connects the interior and natural surroundings. The interior was designed as a one-stop solution for an investment project. Everything you need and nothing more. Each item is placed in its place, has a function, and is an integral part of the interior. The set of the house includes furniture, kitchen, curtains, dishes, cutlery, household appliances, outdoor and indoor lamps, outdoor terrace. All the decoration work is done at the factory, and you just need to put linen on the bed and put towels in the bathroom. Most of the interior items were purchased from chain stores so you can quickly replace them. Expensive materials, stone kitchen countertop by the window, wooden windows, and doors set a premium level of finishing and service, emphasizing the contrast between the wild nature around and the comfortable modern interior. The compact fireplace easily heats the entire space, creates a cozy atmosphere, and can be used for cooking. The exterior is made of black metal and wood. Such a solution delicately fits into any environment, does not dominate nature, and scales harmoniously.
