Designed for a self-builder couple, the 1,296-square-foot cabin (36x36 feet) combines ecological architecture, universal accessibility, and a resort-like experience into a single, cohesive design. The structure is defined by its striking, all-white exterior, which evokes the tranquil, restful properties of the selenite mineral. The architects created this effect with white-painted wooden planks and matching metal roof panels. The geometry of the roof, designed as two inverted crystal-like prisms, gives the structure its unique, modern form while referencing the mineral's crystalline nature. Square skylights punctuate the peaks of these roofs, flooding the interior with natural light and emphasizing the home's sense of balance and symmetry. In addition to its aesthetic vision, the project prioritized universal accessibility to ensure the space is functional and safe for as many users as possible, addressing a common limitation in vacation properties. The interior is a haven of wellness, featuring amenities like a steam bath, sauna, cold bath, and a salt room. A home automation system controls lighting synchronized to the circadian rhythm and can even launch guided meditation sessions. The monochromatic white palette and high ceilings in key areas, such as the living room and bathroom, amplify the peaceful and restful atmosphere. Sustainability was a key consideration in the build, with the clients opting for healthy, local materials like hemp wool for insulation. To enhance the sense of seclusion and wellness, a Faraday cage was installed to block electromagnetic waves, catering to those with electro-sensitivity. Designed by Carl-Viggo Hølmebakk with his team, the 25-square-meter project successfully blends the rehabilitation of the old timber structure with a new, contemporary addition. The design is a sensitive and sophisticated response to the site's stunning yet demanding coastal climate, characterized by spectacular mountains and harsh winds. The original concept involved encasing the weathered timber core within a new protective shell, allowing the old house to stand freely inside. While this initial plan was modified, the final result still features a distinct and respectful relationship between the old and new elements. The built project focuses on the renovation of the existing house and the construction of a westward extension. The addition acts as a "pure extension," echoing the geometrical principles of the original structure, notably its asymmetrical dormer windows, which allow light into the loft and frame views of the landscape. To withstand the extreme wind conditions of the area, the structures are anchored using different methods. The pre-existing Nordlandshus is secured to the ground with guy wires, while the new prefabricated pine glulam extension is wind-anchored to an encompassing concrete slab, which provides a stabilizing counterweight. This structural duality highlights the architects' adaptive and thoughtful approach to construction in a challenging environment. The material palette chosen for the Summer House Gravråk is both humble and resilient, allowing the building to integrate with its natural surroundings. The addition is clad in untreated spruce, a material selected to develop a natural, gray patina over time as it is exposed to sun and rain. The roof is covered with standing seam zinc roofing, offering durability against the elements. The interior features birch plywood cladding and pine flooring, providing a warm and modern finish. The windows are a two-fold design, with aluminum frames on the exterior for protection and wood on the interior to match the warm timber finishes. An artwork titled "this must be the place" by Swedish artist Jan Håfstrøm is integrated into the design, adding a unique and personal touch. Project credits The project was executed by Carl-Viggo Hølmebakk's architectural team. Completed in 2022, Cabana Zero is the prototype for 11 shelters built to serve a spiritual retreat program inspired by the Indigenous traditions of the Peruvian Amazon. The architects approached the project with a strong emphasis on low-impact construction, ensuring a minimal disturbance to the forest both during the process and in the project's long-term environmental presence. Constructed on challenging terrain, Cabana Zero is a modular wooden structure elevated from the ground. This design choice minimizes the alteration of the topography and simplifies the overall construction system. Reusing materials from an old shed on the site, the project features treated pine walls and avoids electricity and hot water. It also incorporates a dry toilet system, reflecting its off-grid, low-impact philosophy. The cabins are designed to be temporary, eventually meant to revert to the forest, mirroring the impermanent human occupation of the natural landscape. The aesthetic reflects a duality in how the cabin relates to its occupants and the surrounding environment. The interior features natural pine, contrasting with the exterior's black-stained wooden verandas. This creates a deliberate abstraction that immerses occupants directly into nature. Large openings allow for ample natural light and ventilation, reinforcing the connection between the interior and the exterior. In addition to the cabin itself, the project includes the restoration of native vegetation around the site and the creation of trails that allow access to specific areas of the forest without causing damage. The 270-square-foot structure was created as a peaceful retreat for its owners to reconnect with nature. Due to the challenging, remote terrain and lack of vehicle access, all building materials were selected to be lightweight and were carried to the site by hand, ensuring the cabin has a minimal impact on the environment. The cabin was elevated off the ground on six cylindrical concrete columns, allowing it to rest lightly on the forest floor. The exterior is comprised of a massive hardwood structure covered with OSB plywood, a Tyvek air and water barrier, and corrugated metal sheets for the outer layer. Its dark exterior helps the structure blend seamlessly into the lush surrounding forest. A floor-to-ceiling glass facade is the focal point of the design and includes sliding glass panels that open onto a wooden deck. This feature visually and physically connects the interior with the landscape, which includes a lake and mountain views. Inside, the cabin's material palette consists of thermoacoustic insulation and light-toned paricá plywood for the walls, ceiling, and built-in furniture. Located on the exact site of a fishing trailer that belonged to the clients' father, the tiny house honors the family's history while providing a modern, low-maintenance escape. The property is nestled within a natural clearing of pine, oak, and hickory trees, offering picturesque western views of a pond. The tiny house is wrapped in a continuous roof and wall plane, which is clad in durable, low-maintenance metal panels. Galvanized standing-seam panels on the main surface provide a distinct vertical rhythm, while charcoal corrugated metal panels on other walls offer a different texture and scale. The use of concrete masonry units and pressure-treated wood further enhances the home's longevity and minimal upkeep. A prominent, full-length front porch extends the living space outdoors and spans the width of the house. It sits within the space created by the continuous roof and wall plane, offering a sheltered spot to enjoy the pond views and natural surroundings. Interior: In contrast to the metallic exterior, the interior is finished with a warm and simple palette. White-painted pine shiplap siding creates a classic, cozy cabin feel. The floors are polished concrete, adding to the durable, resilient nature of the home. The efficient 648-square-foot floor plan includes a main living area with an open-plan kitchen. Above the kitchen is a mezzanine sleeping loft, which provides additional sleeping space for guests. The owner, Jon Nash, a veterinarian who enjoys hands-on work, constructed a significant portion of the home himself, including the kitchen ladder that provides access to the sleeping loft.
