Completed in 2022, Cabana Zero is the prototype for 11 shelters built to serve a spiritual retreat program inspired by the Indigenous traditions of the Peruvian Amazon. The architects approached the project with a strong emphasis on low-impact construction, ensuring a minimal disturbance to the forest both during the process and in the project's long-term environmental presence. Constructed on challenging terrain, Cabana Zero is a modular wooden structure elevated from the ground. This design choice minimizes the alteration of the topography and simplifies the overall construction system. Reusing materials from an old shed on the site, the project features treated pine walls and avoids electricity and hot water. It also incorporates a dry toilet system, reflecting its off-grid, low-impact philosophy. The cabins are designed to be temporary, eventually meant to revert to the forest, mirroring the impermanent human occupation of the natural landscape. The aesthetic reflects a duality in how the cabin relates to its occupants and the surrounding environment. The interior features natural pine, contrasting with the exterior's black-stained wooden verandas. This creates a deliberate abstraction that immerses occupants directly into nature. Large openings allow for ample natural light and ventilation, reinforcing the connection between the interior and the exterior. In addition to the cabin itself, the project includes the restoration of native vegetation around the site and the creation of trails that allow access to specific areas of the forest without causing damage. Due to the challenging, remote terrain and lack of vehicle access, all building materials were selected to be lightweight and were carried to the site by hand, ensuring the cabin has a minimal impact on the environment. The cabin was elevated off the ground on six cylindrical concrete columns, allowing it to rest lightly on the forest floor. The exterior is comprised of a massive hardwood structure covered with OSB plywood, a Tyvek air and water barrier, and corrugated metal sheets for the outer layer. Its dark exterior helps the structure blend seamlessly into the lush surrounding forest. A floor-to-ceiling glass facade is the focal point of the design and includes sliding glass panels that open onto a wooden deck. This feature visually and physically connects the interior with the landscape, which includes a lake and mountain views. Located on the exact site of a fishing trailer that belonged to the clients' father, the tiny house honors the family's history while providing a modern, low-maintenance escape. The property is nestled within a natural clearing of pine, oak, and hickory trees, offering picturesque western views of a pond. The tiny house is wrapped in a continuous roof and wall plane, which is clad in durable, low-maintenance metal panels. Galvanized standing-seam panels on the main surface provide a distinct vertical rhythm, while charcoal corrugated metal panels on other walls offer a different texture and scale. The use of concrete masonry units and pressure-treated wood further enhances the home's longevity and minimal upkeep. A prominent, full-length front porch extends the living space outdoors and spans the width of the house. It sits within the space created by the continuous roof and wall plane, offering a sheltered spot to enjoy the pond views and natural surroundings. Interior: In contrast to the metallic exterior, the interior is finished with a warm and simple palette. White-painted pine shiplap siding creates a classic, cozy cabin feel. The floors are polished concrete, adding to the durable, resilient nature of the home. The efficient 648-square-foot floor plan includes a main living area with an open-plan kitchen. Above the kitchen is a mezzanine sleeping loft, which provides additional sleeping space for guests. The project revitalized the home with locally sourced materials and handcrafted elements, creating a unique and character-filled home. The small, 850-square-foot footprint required maximizing every detail and space. Inspired by the surrounding landscape, the home features a material palette of natural wood, stone, concrete, and glass. Unpainted plaster was left to highlight the patina of reused materials. Inside, the kitchen became a centerpiece of craftsmanship, built by a master woodworker using joinery-based techniques without plywood or hardware. The house also includes subtle nods to local history, such as a hand-carved mermaid backsplash. Rather than demolishing the original ""beach shack,"" the team embarked on a thoughtful transformation that respected the structure's origins and the coastal neighborhood. The project revitalized the home with locally sourced materials and handcrafted elements, creating a unique and character-filled home. The small, 850-square-foot footprint required maximizing every detail and space. Inspired by the surrounding landscape, the home features a material palette of natural wood, stone, concrete, and glass. Unpainted plaster was left to highlight the patina of reused materials. Inside, the kitchen became a centerpiece of craftsmanship, built by a master woodworker using joinery-based techniques without plywood or hardware. The house also includes subtle nods to local history, such as a hand-carved mermaid backsplash. Angled windows were strategically placed to frame views of the water, and the compact, energy-efficient design ensures all-day comfort. The house, with its striking triangular profile, was conceived as a "treehouse for adults" and is nestled between a forest and a cow pasture, with panoramic views toward a nearby lake. To maximize the benefits of its scenic location, the house features three distinct levels, with a bay window on each to frame different views and create a sense of discovery as one climbs the internal stairs. The open-plan, split-level design creates a hierarchy of spaces, from the more communal living room and kitchen on the ground floor to the more intimate sleeping areas on the upper levels. The top-floor bedroom is designed to feel like a sleeping nest under the stars. A playful and interactive element of the design is the steeply inclined facade, which serves as a climbing wall, complete with a rope hanging from the peak of the roof for access. A large timber deck extends from the front of the house, offering additional living space with swings and lounges. The house was built entirely from wood, with a frame of wooden beams forming the A-frame structure. The exterior is clad in Swedish pine treated with a grey-hued pigmented wood protection from SiOO:X on the gables and a green "forest" colored treatment on other sides to help it blend with the woodland. Inside, the walls, ceiling, and floors are lined with birch plywood salvaged from a dismantled puzzle factory, and custom-built furniture was crafted from plywood to suit the split-level design. Globe Website & Links: Visit Buildings Projects Inspiration No Projects yet. 243.Qvarsebo Summerhouse by Leo Qvarsebo (1).jpg Built in 2014, the Qvarsebo Summerhouse, also known as the Summer House in Dalarna, is an 85-square-meter minimalist retreat located in Västerbyn, Sweden, and designed by architect Leo Qvarsebo for himself and his children. The house, with its striking triangular profile, was conceived as a "treehouse for adults" and is nestled between a forest and a cow pasture, with panoramic views toward a nearby lake. To maximize the benefits of its scenic location, the house features three distinct levels, with a bay window on each to frame different views and create a sense of discovery as one climbs the internal stairs. The open-plan, split-level design creates a hierarchy of spaces, from the more communal living room and kitchen on the ground floor to the more intimate sleeping areas on the upper levels. The top-floor bedroom is designed to feel like a sleeping nest under the stars. A playful and interactive element of the design is the steeply inclined facade, which serves as a climbing wall, complete with a rope hanging from the peak of the roof for access. A large timber deck extends from the front of the house, offering additional living space with swings and lounges. The house was built entirely from wood, with a frame of wooden beams forming the A-frame structure. The exterior is clad in Swedish pine treated with a grey-hued pigmented wood protection from SiOO:X on the gables and a green "forest" colored treatment on other sides to help it blend with the woodland. Inside, the walls, ceiling, and floors are lined with birch plywood salvaged from a dismantled puzzle factory, and custom-built furniture was crafted from plywood to suit the split-level design.
