Located in the Muskoka region of Ontario, Canada, it is the smallest of several cabins on a family-owned property. It is tucked into the treeline on a steep slope, providing a quiet escape from the main, multi-generational family cottages below. The cabin reinterprets the traditional A-frame design with two intersecting, offset gables that create distinct volumes and elevations. This split-roof design, inspired by the layered shale rock formations found in the area, allows for carefully placed window openings that offer curated views of the forest and the lake. The design emphasizes both a strong connection to nature and a commitment to sustainability. The exterior features greyed wood siding and natural cedar soffits, which are intended to patina over time and blend further into the rustic landscape. The foundation consists of board-formed concrete that sits lightly on the existing rock contours, avoiding any need for invasive blasting. Inside, the home is functional despite its compact size, with built-in storage and benches. A variety of FSC-rated wood species line the interior, including oak flooring, maple plywood partitions, and Western red cedar slats for the ceiling, which echo the surrounding forest. The interior perimeter walls are clad in white wallboard. The home's layout features a main living area with a fireplace and a kitchen on the lower level, a bedroom with a large window and forest views at the rear, and an upper loft with a built-in desk and extra sleeping space. The large, geometric windows frame views, flood the interior with natural light, and create dramatic angular shadows that change throughout the day. In the evening, the warmly lit cedar interior transforms the cabin into a glowing lantern among the trees. Sustainable features include thickened walls with an R-value over 40, triple-glazed windows for passive insulation, and low-flow, low-energy fixtures. Completed in 2024, the cabin is set on a granite clearing amid a landscape of pines, rocks, and meadow grass. The design draws inspiration from the studio founders' own home, Villa Ellsinger, and was conceived as a modest structure that ""grows upwards"" to maximize its small footprint and address the harsh coastal climate of wind, rain, and salt spray. The house is oriented on a north-south axis, with a largely closed-off northern facade to shield it from neighbors and a nearby county road, while opening up with large windows to the south and east to capture sun and views of the forest and fields. The structure is a standout on its rural plot, topped with a distinctive, steep, hat-shaped roof and gables clad in untreated aluminum sheeting for durability. A cantilevered canopy extends from the structure, providing a covered entrance. To create a spacious, unobstructed internal volume, the roof loads are transferred to a horizontal glue-laminated timber frame that sits atop the exterior walls, visible from the outside. Inside, the walls are clad in warm, untreated pine, which contrasts with the red tiles on the kitchen floor. The interior features bespoke furniture and an open-plan living and kitchen area with a high ceiling. An oversized bookshelf serves multiple functions as a room divider, storage, and structural support for the loft, which contains a children's sleeping area, a sofa bed, and a workspace. A custom-built wood-burning stove is also incorporated within the bookshelf. Maritime-themed circular prisms in the front door and loft windows nod to the cabin's seaside location and spread light into the entryway. Architecture Office | Émilien Robin is a French architect known for his work in peri-urban and rural areas, particularly in northern France. He focuses on revealing the existing resources and vitality of these areas through architecture, often working on public buildings like community centers and schools. His work, such as the community facilities center in Neuvecelle, for which he received the Équerre d'Argent award, demonstrates a sensitive approach to integrating new structures into existing urban fabrics while reinterpreting traditional typologies. Robin is also an educator at the École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Paris-Belleville and advocates for sustainable architecture and the social impact of architectural production. He has also contributed to exhibitions, including the French pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/9756fd_0e9397043ad7459da2f5866bbb243b66~mv2.png/v1/fill/w_1000,h_1001,al_c/Emilien%20Robin-zhiig.png PDFs & Articles Globe Our Gallery Globe Our Store Globe About Globe Projects & Articles Globe Pinterest Instagram YouTube Globe Emilien Robin France Small Title 2017 Since Architecture Office ---- 1 Project 853 Views 0 Appreciate Appreciated Info. The project was an early commission for Robin, who at the time was part of the firm Boidot Robin architectes urbanistes and had graduated from the Nantes National School of Architecture in 2006. The house, created as a secondary residence, was designed with a bioclimatic strategy in mind, prioritizing low-energy performance and a minimal construction budget, especially given its location in a coastal area. The design intentionally moves away from purely formal gestures, instead reinterpreting elements of vernacular architecture to create a contemporary house that is deeply connected to its surroundings. The architecture uses a simple, modern design that is well-integrated into the natural landscape. Its understated aesthetic and thoughtful use of materials create a dwelling that is both beautiful and respectful of its environment. Designed for a young couple seeking an escape from urban intensity, the project harmoniously integrates living, working, and daily routines within its serene natural setting. The design respects the land's slope and incorporates existing trees, making nature a key part of the architecture. The structure consists of two rectangular volumes layered and rotated to create an L-shaped configuration that organizes the home's program on two levels and frames views of the forest. Translucent facades give the house a light appearance and connect the interior and exterior. Large windows frame views of the outdoors. The ground floor includes public areas like a patio, study, and open living, dining, and kitchen area. An internal staircase leads to the private areas upstairs. The house appears to float on the landscape from a distance, with views opening up upon entry. Changes in scale and materials create a warmer feel in the upper-level bedrooms. The house is situated on a gently sloping meadow, surrounded by cherry trees, and is accessed via a small steel bridge. The design process was centered on creating an appropriate and contemporary architectural statement that respects its rural, traditional surroundings. The raw, monolithic design features thick, 50cm-wide insulating concrete walls, with all surfaces left untreated. This choice, combined with the use of raw steel and silver fir, creates a robust and elemental interior and exterior. The living spaces are distributed vertically across three floors, linked by an open staircase, which contributes to the building's open and spacious feel despite its compact footprint. Heating is integrated directly into the concrete core, supplemented by a central furnace for additional warmth. The project balances a minimalist, brutalist aesthetic with the surrounding landscape, providing a striking yet functional refuge. Built as a summer retreat and allotment house for a family of four, the 35-square-meter structure demonstrates maximum efficiency and thoughtful design within strict building limitations. The project harmonizes a deep connection with nature and draws inspiration from architectural masterpieces, creating a space that feels both innovative and timeless. The Villa Minimale's design concept was born from a unique fusion of two architectural inspirations: Villa Rotonda (Andrea Palladio): The Palladian influence is evident in the project's centralized plan and symmetrical layout. Kings Road House (R. M. Schindler): The Los Angeles home's spirit is echoed in the use of four distinct volumes and the creative spatial arrangement. The house is composed of four identical, prefabricated wooden "sheds" arranged in a windmill-like formation around a central, circular air space. This innovative layout maximizes natural light and ventilation while blurring the lines between the interior and exterior. A prominent central oculus or skylight allows for views of the starry night sky from the upper-level sleeping areas. Despite being constrained by local regulations that limit its footprint to 35 m² and its height to 5 meters, the Villa Minimale achieves exceptional spatial efficiency. The interior is expertly planned to serve a family of four. The central area features a dining space, surrounded by a kitchen, a bathroom, a toilet, and a cozy reading alcove. A staircase provides access to the upper level. The upper level contains three bunk beds, offering a "camping-like" feel that is accentuated by the skylight views. The exterior features prefabricated timber construction with light-glazed timber battens and a copper roof. The inner surfaces are lined with veneered marine pine plywood, creating a warm, natural, and inviting atmosphere. The design creates a seamless flow between indoors and outdoors, allowing views of the surrounding landscape in all four directions. Completed in 2023, the cabin was commissioned to provide a unique and serene retreat for relaxation, offering a deep connection with the surrounding nature, which includes an orchard and mature trees. The dwelling is perched on 4-meter-high concrete stilts, allowing the landscape to flow unimpeded beneath and creating a feeling of being in a "bird's nest," which offers a sense of security and intimacy. The structure is built from sustainable materials, featuring a frame of glued laminated spruce timbers and a platform and roof of cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels. The lower part of the structure and the terrace are made from glued laminated larch timbers. The most prominent feature of the design is the extensive use of glass walls, which enclose the entire living space to provide uninterrupted, 360-degree views of the natural surroundings. For privacy, interior curtains can be drawn. The open-plan interior is designed for simplicity and comfort. It includes a built-in bed, a connected bar/kitchenette, and a suspended fireplace that creates a cozy, warm atmosphere. The space is divided into distinct zones for sleeping, sitting, and conversing. Large HS portals—sliding doors—provide access to a spacious terrace overlooking the farm's orchard. While the current cabin lacks a bathroom and cooking facilities, plans are in place for a future expansion that will add a sauna, shower, and toilet in the space between the supporting pillars beneath the house. The project is a reinterpretation of a dilapidated old building, carefully drafted to align with the passions of its owner. The structure is designed as a sanctuary for recreation, meditation, and personal development, offering a place for its owner to find balance and reconnect with nature. The design of Tom's Hut focuses on simplicity and a deep connection to its environment. The cabin features an angular shape that encloses a two-level space and is constructed entirely of wood, with an untreated larch exterior that helps the small structure blend seamlessly into its forest setting. One of its unique features is the ability to be firmly closed on all sides with wooden shutters, or to have its windows opened to provide varying views of the surrounding wilderness. The interior space, which some have described as ""chapel-like,"" is reduced to the bare minimum, providing only the essentials for a contemplative life. The off-grid nature of the cabin is a core aspect of its design. It deliberately eschews modern amenities like electricity, relying on a single water fountain, an indoor fireplace, an outdoor fire pit, and a stove for cooking and heating. This intentional rusticity provides an escape from modern conveniences and reinforces the project's purpose as a back-to-basics retreat. The thoughtful connection between the interior and the outdoors is emphasized by large openings at the front and back of the hut, visually and physically linking the living space to the surrounding nature. Completed in 2019, the small house is situated on a hillside plot at the edge of the Vienna Woods, within the distinct allotment garden settlement of Pötzleinsdorf. Rather than conforming to the varied and often chaotic architectural styles of its neighbors, the design offers a creative commentary by arranging three varying cubes into a spatial collage. These cubes are distinct on the exterior, combining materials like classic larch wood and corrugated metal with different colors and finishes. The interior of the cottage, however, unites these varied volumes into a single, cohesive space, maximizing the use of its limited 50 square meters. The design is a triumph of function over convention, allowing for cooking, reading, working, and sleeping to occur in a seamless spatial flow, unconstrained by traditional room definitions. The material palette for the interior is deliberately modest, featuring three-layer wood panels for the walls, linoleum flooring, and upholstered foam cubes that double as a sofa. This simplicity is contrasted by a vivid and playful color concept that energizes the internal space. While the exterior is characterized by natural and more subdued tones, the interior is a dynamic mix of hot orange-red and cool green-blue, complemented by accent colors like coral and light blue. The final effect is a home that joyfully captures the spirit of creating a small, personal kingdom within a larger community. The design has received notable recognition, including an award at the wienwood 21 competition.
