RETREAT & WELLNESS | Prefabricated | The Cabin on the Border is a prefabricated, off-grid micro-cabin designed by Istanbul-based studio SO? Architecture and Ideas, and completed in 2017. Sited in a rural area near the Turkish-Greek border, specifically in a village near Edirne, Turkey, the 18-square-meter cabin was conceived as a weekend retreat for an Istanbul-based family. The design is a response to the diverse local climate, which can range from warm, rainy afternoons to fierce, stormy nights. It is built of laminated wood and insulated with stone wool, making it adaptable to changing weather conditions. RESIDENTIAL | House | The Hempcrete House is a compact, sustainable off-grid dwelling designed by Altereco Design and completed in 2023. Located in the alpine-adjacent town of Lyonville, Central Victoria, Australia, the house serves as a prototype for energy-efficient living using hempcrete, a carbon-negative material. The house embraces a "just enough" design philosophy with a small 75-square-meter footprint. This provides a functional and beautiful living space that emphasizes elegant simplicity. The main construction material consists of 300mm-thick walls of hempcrete (a mix of hemp hurd, lime, and water). The hempcrete provides excellent thermal insulation, resists fire, mold, and pests, and offers a natural, earthy texture. The home is oriented to the north to maximize solar gain during the cold winters. Wide eaves are used to shade the interior from the sun during the summer. Polished concrete floors and internal hempcrete walls absorb and release heat to help regulate the internal temperature. Natural ventilation: Operable clerestory windows create a "chimney effect" to naturally cool and ventilate the home in summer. The floor plan includes an airlock entry, bathroom, kitchen, and open-plan living/dining area on the ground floor. A mezzanine level accommodates the bedroom. Climate control: Despite experiencing sub-zero temperatures, the home can maintain a comfortable indoor temperature of 20°C (68°F) without using additional heating. Sustainability and performance The all-electric home is powered by a 5.2kW solar PV system located on an adjacent shed. A rainwater harvesting and filtration system collects water in large repurposed wine vats. The wastewater is treated with a biological worm farm system. The hemp used in construction sequesters carbon from the atmosphere during its growth. When combined with lime, the material continues to harden and sequester carbon throughout the building's lifespan. The project minimized waste through careful planning and by using reclaimed materials. Only two small trailer loads of waste went to a landfill. Reclaimed Messmate timber was used for the upstairs flooring, shelving, kitchen cupboards, and other trim. RESIDENTIAL | House | The House on the Pond, or Maison sur l'Étang in French, is a secondary dwelling designed by Montreal-based Atelier Échelle. Located in the rural municipality of Austin in Québec, Canada, the project was completed in 2023. Created to complement the client's ancestral home on the same property, the house was envisioned as a compact yet versatile "jewel box" with a strong connection to its natural surroundings. The design of the 120-square-meter house is a modern reinterpretation of traditional Québec agrarian architecture. Atelier Échelle successfully navigated tight local building regulations, which capped the floor area, by maximizing covered terraces and creating a flexible interior layout. The house is elevated on an insulated concrete block foundation, with a lower level carved into the ground, and a mezzanine level built into the gabled roof. This design allows the building to adapt to the seasons, with expanded outdoor spaces in favorable weather and a cozy, protected interior during winter. The interior spaces are characterized by warmth, timelessness, and a connection to nature. A double-height living room on the main level is anchored by a wood-burning fireplace and large windows that provide expansive views of the adjacent pond and distant mountains. The kitchen features custom rift-cut white oak millwork and a gold-streaked white quartzite counter. The primary bedroom is located on the mezzanine level, while a children's bunk room is tucked into the subterranean level. The basement also includes a TV lounge and a bathroom. The choice of materials emphasizes durability, sustainability, and a respectful connection to the local environment. The exterior cladding and decks are made of Kebony, a sustainable, modified wood product. The interiors feature rift-cut white oak millwork and unlacquered brass hardware, which will develop a rich patina over time. A soft, putty-colored sandstone is used for the sunken fire pit, complementing the gold-streaked quartzite in the kitchen. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Completed in 2021, the Lipno Lakeside Cabin is a 118-square-meter retreat located in the Bohemian Forest near Lipno Lake in the Czech Republic. Designed by the Lyon-based firm Les Archinautes, the cabin was built in place of a previous wooden structure and serves as a base for mountain sports enthusiasts. The design reinterprets principles of local Bohemian Forest architecture, featuring a compact, gabled shape and a rectangular floor plan. The architects placed great emphasis on connecting the cabin with its natural surroundings. The living space centers around a large, square, gabled window that frames views of the lake and the two mountain peaks behind it. Inside, the building's exposed cross-laminated timber (CLT) panel structure creates a warm, cozy atmosphere, bringing the scent, color, and feel of the forest indoors. The exposed wood was treated with hard wax oil with a UV filter to preserve its color over time. The cabin's thoughtful design accommodates both functionality and connection to nature. The ground floor includes a small room, bathroom, laundry room, and a sauna, with additional storage for sports equipment. An attic level features two bedrooms with circular windows, and another bathroom and pantry. RESIDENTIAL | House | Situated among the grassy dunes and scenic hills of Vejby, Denmark, the Heatherhill Beach House is a 232-square-meter modern retreat designed by Norm Architects. The Copenhagen-based firm reimagined the traditional Danish summerhouse, drawing on regional architectural traditions while infusing them with contemporary elements. Built on the footprint of a preexisting house to minimize disruption to the landscape, the new structure respects its tranquil seaside location while offering a serene sanctuary for a family from the city. RESIDENTIAL | Modular Home | Designed by Estudio Borrachia Arquitectos in collaboration with GB Arquitectos, the LABT-20 Modular Home is a 31-square-meter residential prototype completed in 2022 in City Bell, Argentina. This small-scale project is part of a larger, serial production system of adaptable, prefabricated modules that can be modified to suit various needs and environments, from a vacation habitat in a remote landscape to part of a larger housing complex. The modules were designed to be versatile, compact, and to integrate harmoniously with their natural surroundings, offering a significant upgrade from a simple shelter by proposing a more complete living experience. The specific 10.5-meter-long LABT-20 unit in City Bell was installed as a permanent residence for one or two people, complementing an existing family home on the same plot. The module is crafted from wood and features an open living and dining area with furniture that can be converted into additional beds, offering spatial flexibility. A fixed kitchen and bathroom form the "wet core" of the home. At the opposite end, a bedroom is separated by sliding panels for privacy and can also integrate with the bathroom. The design emphasizes a connection to nature. A large window at the front opens onto an outdoor deck, which acts as a patio and provides access to a staircase.
