The design is a testament to the idea that less is more, with every square inch of the modest house serving a deliberate purpose. It is carefully planned to coexist with its natural surroundings, harmonizing with the lush greenery and distant mountain views. The architecture embraces simplicity through its use of materials, building forms, and spatial organization, creating a humble abode that seamlessly integrates with the highlands region. Inside, the house features a minimalist layout designed to comfortably accommodate two people, equipped with a bedroom, a workspace, and a kitchenette with a coffee bar. CULTURAL | Museum | Conceived as a monument and memorial to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding president of the UAE, the Zayed National Museum will be the centrepiece of the Saadiyat Island Cultural District and will showcase the history, culture and, more recently, the social and economic transformation of the Emirates. Architecturally, the aim has been to combine a highly efficient, contemporary form with elements of traditional Arabic design and hospitality to create a museum that is sustainable, welcoming and culturally of its place. Celebrating Sheikh Zayed’s legacy and love of nature, the museum is set within a landscaped garden, based on a timeline of his life. The galleries are housed within a mound, whose form is an abstraction of the topography of the Emirates. Above this rise five lightweight steel structures, sculpted aerodynamically to act as solar thermal towers. The heat at the top of the towers works to draw the air up vertically through the galleries due to the thermal stack effect. Air vents open at the top of the wing-shaped towers taking advantage of the negative pressure on the lee of the wing profile to draw the hot air out. Fresh air is also captured at low level and drawn through buried ground-cooling pipes and then released into the museum’s lobby. Balancing the lightweight steel structures with a more monumental interior experience, pod-shaped galleries are suspended over a dramatic top-lit central lobby, which is dug into the earth to exploit its thermal properties and brings together shops, cafes and informal venues for performances of poetry and dance. SPORTS & RECREATION | Aquatic center | Palace of Swimming Sports The building, which is transforming the view of the Danube bank in North Pest, is the visual closure of the riparian installation. Due to its scale, its mass rising above the flat area, it is more of a natural formation, a landmark, the undulating façade of which was dressed by Marcel Ferencz and György Détári, the architects who designed the building, in shades of reflection of the sky and the Danube. Intensive coastal development in major European waterfront cities has been going on for decades. This is what happened in Vienna, Düsseldorf, Duisburg, London: public institutions, hotels, sports and office complexes were built, which are carriers of high-tech and often industrial aesthetics. Starting in Pest from the Palace of Arts to Boráros Square - and opposite it, such an institutional area developed in Újbuda. Looking at the northern side of the historic city center, with the exception of the double mass of the Danube Towers, the opportunities are still untapped. Of course, the installation does not become - it cannot become - continuous here. The natural endowments of the Danube bank, such as the mouth of the Rákos stream or the outer park area of ​​the Dagály beach, necessarily interrupt the line. The view of the Swimming Center, which is embedded between these two, is decisive from two main directions from the point of view of the cityscape. The mass of the house here fits into the old, preserved and currently being renovated entrance building of the Dagály Bath, the two buildings will be connected by a glass corridor. From the Buda side, the accordion-like strips of aluminum sheet converging in a sharp-edged edge, reflecting the colors of the water and the sun turning from south to west, depending on the viewing angle. The undulating façade separates from the mass of the house, a staircase and a panoramic elevator lead to the roof behind the bark, independent of the hall, the gaps between the bypass wave lines show changing views and a wider horizon. Arriving at the roof, a pretty full, 360-degree panorama of Budapest unfolds before us. At the level of the Danube, the house is not an obstacle: a small stretch, a meeting point and a tidy public area are being built on the bank. Béla Varga, István Fodor, Tamás Ükör and Ákos Pindes played a key role in the integration of the tidal bath and the Danube Arena, who were responsible for the preparation of the permitting and construction plans. The house had to be prepared for a total of twelve different floor plan variations: four sports - artificial jumping, synchronized swimming, swimming, water polo - for everyday, domestic and international competition. The contradiction between gigantic size and mobility had to be resolved. The house, divided into lanes in terms of floor plan, can accommodate changes in the movement and routes of athletes, spectators, the press and guests. As the arena must serve two – competition and normal – functions, the most important factor in the planning of the building was to lay down spatial foundations which could cope with the changes, said architect and creator of the Arena, Marcel Ferencz. We opted for a nine-partite spatial arrangement previously used by ancient cultures. The headroom of the main hall can accommodate up to ten additional rows of spectators, thus we planned with a significant reserve which impacted the scale of the structure. The bracketed nature of the facade serves as a link and connection between the main and ancillary masses of varying heights, whilst the major support structure remained part of the composition while retaining its functional logic. The four structural supports orient the building’s partitioned traffic systems and serve as a link between the various functions. We resolved the inevitable issue of density arising from its functions with the transparency of surfaces in the spectator zones. Upon entrance, the operation of the building becomes immediately transparent, providing views on both sides of the building as mass and transparency accommodate one another. The three-level, 25,000 sqm competition hall features a 10-lane, 50 meter competition pool with a depth of 3 meters, along with a 5 meter deep, 21x25 meter pool and diving tower as well as a 6000-capacity spectator stand, symmetrically positioned along the length of the hall. The main building’s warm-up hall features a 10-lane, 2.2 meter deep and 50 meter long warm-up pool (on a half-pool sized area with an adjustable bottom), a 1 meter deep, 8x12.5 meter children’s pool and a jacuzzi that can accommodate up to 25 people. RESIDENTIAL | House | As an artistic architectural response to Australia’s coastline and the contours of the rural landscape, Peninsula House forms a dramatic sculptural relic, weathered by its context. The dwelling is located on the high point of the site overlooking a coastal stretch of Flinders with Bass Strait beyond. Approached along a meandering driveway, a ribbon of rammed earth rises monumentally 10 meters into the air, wrapping behind the dwelling, before gradually tapering and returning to the landscape. The elevation has minimal glazing and considerable thermal mass – stabilising the heat from the afternoon sun. A notch midway along the wall, forms a shadow line, subtly defining the entry. Crossing the entry threshold, a lush, planted atrium defines the building’s axial centre, and allows natural light to flood into the interior. Bending hallways snake from the atrium to create three distinct zones – a living zone for entertaining, a bedroom zone, and a recreation zone. The private master bedroom sits above the living zone, accessed by a sweeping stair cloaked in darkness. The main double height living space dramatically rises towards the glazing and the expansive views of the rural terrain and ocean. The sweeping parabolic ceiling affords a unique acoustic quality to the space that accommodates the sound from the owner’s grand piano and collection of musical instruments. Adjacent to the main living space is a large, sheltered terrace fulfilling the client’s brief to host grand poolside events with views of the valley and water. Each of the five bedrooms and main living spaces celebrates views of the rural context and surrounds. At the end of an evocative hallway, lined on one side with rammed earth and slot windows, lies a purpose-built recording studio. The dark, natural external material palette of charred timber and rammed earth shrouds the building, selected for its robust and low-maintenance qualities. The charred battens cloak the building mass allowing it to recede into the rural context as an enigmatic form. Internally the thematic quality of darkness continues with black mosaic tiles, black timber battens, blackened brass, and black terrazzo flooring. There is an emphasis on the shifting nature of light and shadow along curving surfaces and forms of walls and openings. The monochromatic tones frame views of the natural colours present in the surrounding setting. The design of Tømmertempelet is a playful response to the "artificially traditional" winter cabins that have become common in the area. Situated in a forest clearing in Kanji Dol, Slovenia, the project was created for a young Slovenian family who, living in a big city in Italy, wanted a home that allowed them to be surrounded by nature. The design is a modern interpretation of the traditional mountain cabin, with exaggerated angles and oblique sides that give it a distinctive appearance while allowing it to blend into the surrounding landscape. Its simple form was intentionally created to minimize disruption to the environment and withstand the harsh Slovenian weather. The Wooden House's exterior is protected by durable, dark metal siding and thick insulation, which contrast with the light-wood interior. This warm, timber-clad interior offers a sense of being outdoors and helps blur the line between interior and exterior spaces. A large glass facade on one side of the house lets in ample natural light and provides expansive views of the forest and hills, connecting nearly every room to the natural surroundings. The layout maximizes the home's limited space with an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area on the ground floor. Two bedrooms and a play area are located on the second level and overlook the main living spaces.
