RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Located in Grydalen, in Norway's Sirdal municipality, Hytte Grydalen is a 75-square-meter off-grid cabin designed by Trodahl Arkitekter. The elongated cabin, completed in 2018, is situated in a protected area without electricity or drainage, and its angular, ship-like form stands in stark contrast to the rounded landscape of the surrounding mountains. The cabin's design prioritizes a connection to nature and a focus on an unplugged, off-the-grid lifestyle. Its off-grid power is supplied by solar panels, providing lighting for the interior. The house is elongated, with a steep-pitched roofline that allows for a full ceiling height and a spacious, open feel within the main living area. The interior is dominated by wood, creating a warm, cozy atmosphere, and features a sleeping loft with an uninterrupted view of the surrounding landscape. Large windows, including glass walls in the living area, bring in natural light and blur the line between indoors and outdoors. The cabin also features an open fireplace for added warmth and ambiance. Wegner designed the CH825 in 1959 as one of the several credenzas that, with their calm appearance and functional interior, became sought after at auctions many years later. In 2014, Carl Hansen & Søn relaunched one of these credenzas, CH825, on the 100th anniversary of Wegner’s birth. When the two roller shutter doors on the Wegner credenza CH825 are slid to one side and behind the interior backing, the interior of the credenza is fully accessible. If the credenza, on the other hand, is closed, the doors form a calm, continuous veneer surface with the vertical grain texture. As a grip, a vertically placed piece of wood is attached through a thin, square steel plate to the solid vertical front edge of the door. The interior of Wegner’s credenza is fitted with a combination of shelves and pullout trays, which as a starting point, provide useful and diverse storage space. These are divided into three compartments, of which the two outer ones have two shelves each and the middle has four pull-out trays. The shelves can be adjusted as needed. The credenza can be chosen with either round legs in solid wood which fit with most of Wegner’s chairs and tables or with a curved steel frame which is also used in his CH100 Series. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Ohio Valley Hut is a 600-square-foot, off-grid cabin located on a 2,000-acre family cattle farm in Belmont County, Ohio. Designed and built by architect Greg Dutton, the project was inspired by Scandinavian design and the "hygge" concept of coziness. Completed in 2018, the hut was a collaborative effort with Dutton's brother, Chris, their father, John, and other family and friends. The cabin's sustainable, minimalist approach earned it a 2019 AIA Ohio Honor Award and a 2020 AIA Columbus Architecture Honor Award. The hut is nestled in the woods on a high bank, with a prime view of one of the many lakes on the farm. The property, which the family purchased in 1981, was originally a strip mine that has been reclaimed over the decades through their stewardship. The cabin's foundation consists of simple concrete piers, allowing it to "touch the earth lightly" and minimize its environmental impact. The exterior is clad in cedar shingles, which will weather over time to a soft gray that will allow the building to blend even more seamlessly into its surroundings. The design is heavily influenced by aspects of farming, using traditional and logical building techniques with simple, economical materials. Inside, the cabin features a "country minimalism" aesthetic. The design is practical for the region's climate, with a lack of eaves to prevent ice dam formation in an area known for a high number of freeze/thaw cycles. Raised off the ground by three reinforced concrete fin walls, the structure is designed to "touch the land lightly," a principle inspired by Australian architect Glenn Murcutt. These fin walls also extend to shape an entry dooryard and a fire court, integrating the house with its immediate surroundings. Inside, the home explores the beauty of raw materials and simple construction. Exposed wood framing and Douglas fir plywood sheathing create a warm, rustic interior, with Cor-Ten steel details echoing the exterior. A central plywood-sheathed core contains the more "finished" service areas, like the kitchen and bathroom. Expansive windows, including a large corner window, frame views of the pastoral valley and the Atlantic coast, connecting the minimalist interior with the dramatic landscape. The 68-square-meter home is a modern interpretation of the traditional Icelandic turf house, designed to blend into the landscape by appearing as a continuation of the earth mounds surrounding it. The roof is covered with wild grass and heather, with rainwater channeled through open copper fittings between the northern gables. The house is partially embedded within the grassy landscape, with walls that are either earth-covered or composed of large, glazed sections that provide panoramic views of the surroundings. This design allows for a strong connection to the spectacular landscape, creating the sense of a hidden retreat. The external walls are of the same in-situ concrete as the interior, with some areas featuring columnar basalt masonry. The interior boasts a simple and minimalist aesthetic, with concrete floors and large windows that connect the living spaces to the expansive outdoors. Completed in 2023, the cabin was built on the repurposed concrete foundation of the original structure, which had been destroyed by extreme weather. This approach minimized the project's environmental impact and maximized existing resources, both material and cultural. Located in Skarðsströnd, the cabin is part of a broader development by Studio Bua of former farm buildings into a home, cultural spaces, and additional guesthouses. The project is named after the Nypurhyrna mountain that rises up from behind it. The cabin features a deliberately simple, jet-black corrugated steel exterior that references the local vernacular and protects against the harsh Icelandic weather. Its off-center pitched roof echoes the distinctive shape of one of the area's dominant mountain peaks. The interior features exposed cross-laminated timber (CLT) walls, which create a warm and cozy atmosphere. The space is divided into two independent units: a workspace with living quarters for the artist and her husband, and a self-contained mini-apartment for guests. Salvaged materials were incorporated throughout the project, including a staircase from a historic Reykjavík building and kitchen units from a 1950s apartment. The 68-square-meter home is a modern interpretation of the traditional Icelandic turf house, designed to blend into the landscape by appearing as a continuation of the earth mounds surrounding it. The roof is covered with wild grass and heather, with rainwater channeled through open copper fittings between the northern gables. The house is partially embedded within the grassy landscape, with walls that are either earth-covered or composed of large, glazed sections that provide panoramic views of the surroundings. This design allows for a strong connection to the spectacular landscape, creating the sense of a hidden retreat. The external walls are of the same in-situ concrete as the interior, with some areas featuring columnar basalt masonry. The interior boasts a simple and minimalist aesthetic, with concrete floors and large windows that connect the living spaces to the expansive outdoors.
