RESIDENTIAL | House | Completed in 2017, the T House, also known as T noie, is a 102-square-meter family home located in Toyota, Japan, and designed by Katsutoshi Sasaki + Associates. The architects were inspired by both the human and urban scale, creating a structure with unusual proportions designed for both intimate comfort and spacious openness. The design is based on two different dimensional scales: a narrow width of 1.55 meters, which promotes a feeling of human closeness and coziness, and a soaring eight-meter ceiling, which creates a sense of openness and reflects the scale of the surrounding urban streetscape. These two scales coexist within the home, with different floors loosely connected to encourage movement and interaction. The interior is arranged across platforms that are staggered along a spiral staircase, allowing inhabitants to share the same space even when in different rooms. The house features a striking dark exterior clad in red cedar planks, giving it a minimalist and private appearance with few windows. In contrast, the interior is finished in light Falcata plywood, creating a bright and airy atmosphere. Natural light enters the house primarily through clerestory windows that wrap around the top of the walls, filtering soft light into the interior throughout the day. The T-shaped structure was developed with a unique joint pillar-and-beam system to create a new way of living within the traditional Japanese dimensional framework. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Remote Lake Cabin is a sustainable, off-grid retreat designed by Vermont-based Stonorov Workshop and completed in 2020. It is situated in the heavily wooded Adirondack Mountains of New York, on a lake accessible only by boat, and was designed for a family that has spent summers in the area for generations. The 783-square-foot, two-bedroom cabin was constructed with minimal impact on the environment and stands elevated on stilts, allowing the existing ecosystem to thrive beneath it. To avoid disturbing the forest, construction was carried out with hand tools and smaller equipment, with the firm's partner, Otto Stonorov, hand-building much of the structure using a human-powered chain hoist to raise large timbers. The design is a simple and honest expression of its materials and site. The structure is a wood-clad timber frame joined with steel components, with locally sourced hemlock forming the main frame and white pine used for the siding and floors. Extensive glazing offers panoramic views of the forest and lake, particularly from the master bedroom and a main living area that extends onto a deck through a large window and door. The off-grid property is powered by a solar array located elsewhere on-site, and a sustainable filtration system purifies lake water for in-home use. The interior features a warm and inviting atmosphere, with a central living area, built-in bunk beds in a loft area, and handcrafted elements throughout. Almost all of the furniture, including a dining table with benches and finger-jointed kitchen drawers, was custom-made by Stonorov Workshop. - Rolling Huts | Olson Kundig | ZHIG
HOSPITALITY | Hut | A unique lodging concept designed by architect Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig, the Rolling Huts are a series of six mobile, prefabricated cabins located in a flood plain meadow in Washington's Methow Valley. Conceived as a modern and low-impact alternative to camping, the huts were designed for a client who wanted to provide guest accommodations on the site of a former RV campground while allowing the landscape to return to its natural state. The cabins sit on oversized steel wheels, a creative solution to local zoning regulations that prohibited permanent structures but permitted RVs. This wheeled foundation elevates the huts a short distance above the meadow, allowing native grasses to grow underneath and minimizing the human footprint on the sensitive environment. The 200-square-foot cabins, completed in 2008, are essentially minimalist, steel-clad boxes on a steel and wood platform. Large, double-paned sliding glass doors at one end of each hut open onto a covered deck, extending the usable space into the outdoors. Inside, the material palette is simple, raw, and inexpensive, featuring cork and plywood left as natural as possible. A lopsided, inverted V-shaped roof with clerestory windows floats above the walls, bringing ample natural light into the compact interior. While the cabins offer a warm, sheltered, and low-tech space, showers and other communal facilities are located in a central barn, reinforcing the project's connection to camping. Completed in 2006, the project offers a contemporary take on the traditional, archetypal Slovenian farmhouse. The house was designed to be cost-effective, energy-efficient, and low-maintenance, with a construction process that allowed for rapid on-site assembly The design is centered on a basic pitched-roof volume, but its cladding offers a unique, modern interpretation. The facade features a veil of horizontally oriented timber louvers on the north and south sides, which contrast with vertically oriented zinc panels that cover the roof and parts of the east and west elevations. While the house appears to lack traditional windows from a distance, the louvers and gaps in the timber cladding allow natural light and ventilation to filter into the interior while maintaining a sense of privacy. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Completed in 2021, the Lipno Lakeside Cabin is a 118-square-meter retreat located in the Bohemian Forest near Lipno Lake in the Czech Republic. Designed by the Lyon-based firm Les Archinautes, the cabin was built in place of a previous wooden structure and serves as a base for mountain sports enthusiasts. The design reinterprets principles of local Bohemian Forest architecture, featuring a compact, gabled shape and a rectangular floor plan. The architects placed great emphasis on connecting the cabin with its natural surroundings. The living space centers around a large, square, gabled window that frames views of the lake and the two mountain peaks behind it. Conceived by local couple Henrik and Lene Stokkeland, and brought to life by architect Manuela Hardy, the project aimed to create a sanctuary that minimizes environmental impact while maximizing the connection to nature. Its name, Trekronå, translates to "tree crown," reflecting its design inspiration drawn from the forest's canopy. The design for the 15 square meter (161 square foot) cabin was a collaboration between the architect and the clients, driven by a mutual fascination for playful design and childhood dreams of forest cabins. The geometric shape and timber cladding are inspired by pinecones and the surrounding pine forest. The structure is lifted off the ground on three tilted steel legs, built on a hexagonal metal base frame. This allows the cabin to be removed almost without a trace, and the stilts minimize interference with the terrain. A focus on using local materials and details was maintained throughout the build. The exterior is clad in Accoya, a rot-resistant, pine-based product, while the interior features elegant oak finishes. Despite its tiny footprint, the cabin is designed to accommodate up to five people with a functional kitchen, sleeping bunks, a shower room, and a sitting area with views of the woods. The construction of Trekronå became a collaborative, hands-on effort. Client Henrik Stokkeland, a trained carpenter, took an active role in the build. When he sustained an injury, the project continued with the help of numerous volunteers from the community. This community-driven spirit is part of what makes the cabin so special. The project was completed in 2021. Since its completion, the cabin has received significant acclaim, winning the Bronze A' Design Award in Architecture in 2022. Visitors can now rent the cabin for a memorable escape and enjoy the nearby sauna and spa area, also designed by Manuela Hardy. Completed in 2022, the 549-square-foot cabin was conceived as a shelter that evokes the history of primitive human dwellings while blending seamlessly with its mystical, rugged environment. Inspired by naval architecture, the design features a compact, three-story volume that maximizes space through a vertical distribution of functions. The exterior is clad in yellow pine wood with an amber hue, which is contrasted by a canopy of dark clay tiles supported by large eaves. These materials were chosen to resonate with the surrounding landscape and to reflect the effects of time and weather. Inside, the material palette is warm and natural, with exposed wood complemented by woven rugs, clay lamps, and visible pipes and mechanisms. The layout unfolds over three levels, featuring an open-plan kitchen and dining area on the main level and a tatami mat, a suspended desk, and the main bedroom with panoramic views of Lake Tota on the upper levels.
