PUBLIC | Multi-use facility | Completed in 2002, the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) is a multi-use facility built for the Victorian State Government in Melbourne, Australia. The project combines the existing infrastructure of three organisations, ACCA, Chunky Move and Playbox, to create a unified major presence in the Arts, and form a precinct with the existing Malthouse theatre building located on the adjacent site. The building is designed to make reference to its primary function; it is a sculpture in which to exhibit art. The bold form and materiality of the façade is intended to create a strong presence and express with optimism, and in a frugal sense, a robust laboratory for experimentation. Those using the building are meant to feel comfortably challenged. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/9756fd_e6be3ef126ec4407969cd717274a9f7b~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_2400,h_1490,al_c,q_90/The%20Australian%20Centre%20for%20Contemporary%20Art%20(ACCA).jpg Please Wait The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA)4.jpg The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA)3.jpg The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA)2.jpg 1/2 0 Product 5.3K Views 0 0 Pin Pin Private Public x Appreciators Appreciated Appreciate Please Log in The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) 111 Sturt St, Southbank VIC 3006, Australia. - The Poplar Garden House | Onix | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Nestled in an ecological allotment garden in Groningen, the Netherlands, the Poplar Garden House is a small, contemporary shed designed by architect Haiko Meijer of Onix for his own family. Completed around 2011, the 32-square-meter cabin was conceived as a low-impact, off-grid retreat within the Tuinwijck allotment gardens, a green space where city residents can rent plots for gardening and leisure. The design prioritizes simplicity and sustainability, using materials and energy systems that respect its natural setting. The house features a simple gabled roof but is modernized through large openings and vertical glazing strips that echo the poplar panels used for its construction. Constructed entirely from uniform poplar planks, the house is both a functional living space and an artistic sculpture, with the boards covering the interior and exterior. This unified material palette, from the walls and floors to the foundation and roof, creates a consistent and warm aesthetic. The planks are designed to be removable, allowing for future artistic customization. Its L-shaped floor plan and strategic placement create two distinct outdoor areas: a sunny, extroverted space facing a playground and a private, introverted, and shaded space facing a drainage ditch. The interior features a central living space, a compact kitchenette with a gas cooktop, and a concrete counter that merges with a built-in fireplace. With no electric power supplied to the allotment, the house is completely powered by natural daylight and rooftop solar panels. A circular skylight and narrow vertical windows illuminate the space, while a raised sleeping loft offers a cozy, elevated sleeping area. - Forest Retreat | Scalar Architecture | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Forest Retreat is a minimalist, 1,200-square-foot cabin located in a sloped, forest clearing in Litchfield, Connecticut, and designed by New York-based Scalar Architecture for a family of writers and producers. The project was conceived as a sustainable and thoughtful retreat, with a compact, efficient design that minimizes its ecological footprint and impact on the rocky terrain. The cabin is situated in a remote area, only accessible by foot or light utility vehicle, enhancing its feeling of seclusion. The design is a compact, dark green box that hovers lightly above the ground on concrete piers, an approach that reduces site disturbance. Large, strategically placed openings carve into the facade, allowing for an immersive connection with nature and framing specific views of the forest. A notable architectural feature is the concave roof plane, or impluvium, which serves multiple functions: it collects rainwater, channels light and ventilation into the house, and focuses attention on the surrounding terrain. This central courtyard space creates a protected clearing within the forest clearing, enhancing the tranquil atmosphere. The interior of the Forest Retreat is defined by a tiered, open-plan layout that accommodates the sloping site. Light-colored wood accentuates the different levels, which include a sunken living room, a dining area, a kitchen, two bedrooms, and a loft. A key detail is the seamless integration of a large boulder, which was left in place and is partially exposed within the impluvium, strengthening the relationship between the interior and the forest. A porch is located on the highest part of the slope, while a semi-covered walkway leads to a lower entry point. Throughout the house, the simple material palette and large windows work together to create a space that is both peaceful and comfortable. The heavily insulated, wood-framed structure is designed to be energy-efficient and was crafted from engineered and nominal wood. Architecture and Ideas, and completed in 2017. Sited in a rural area near the Turkish-Greek border, specifically in a village near Edirne, Turkey, the 18-square-meter cabin was conceived as a weekend retreat for an Istanbul-based family. The design is a response to the diverse local climate, which can range from warm, rainy afternoons to fierce, stormy nights. It is built of laminated wood and insulated with stone wool, making it adaptable to changing weather conditions. A key feature of the design is its ability to transform and open up to nature manually, using a simple pulley system. A drawbridge-style wall on one end of the cabin can be lowered to create a patio, while a large polycarbonate window pivots upwards to form a glazed canopy, blurring the line between indoors and outdoors. The interior features a minimalist, open-plan layout, with plywood-clad walls, a kitchenette, a seating area that doubles as a bed, and two elevated sleeping lofts. For utilities, the cabin relies on solar panels for electricity and a rainwater catchment system, enabling a fully self-sufficient, off-grid existence. The project was built to be transportable and was moved to its location on a flatbed lorry. Credits Architects: Sevince Bayrak and Oral Göktaş from SO? Photography: SO? - Mt Kanimbla Retreats Hilltop Cabin | - | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Hilltop Cabin at Mt Kanimbla Retreats, located in Kanimbla, Sydney, Australia, is an architectural gem that masterfully combines modern luxury with the breathtaking beauty of the Australian bush. Originally built in the 1970s, the cabins underwent renovations in 2019 to infuse each one with a unique aesthetic inspired by the southwestern style of American log cabins, while incorporating the rich palette of the World Heritage Listed Blue Mountains. Its design reflects the warmth and texture of rugged mountain cabins, featuring an interior that is deeply connected to nature through rich earthy tones, native timbers, and soft, natural finishes. Expansive windows invite the outside in, framing picturesque views of eucalyptus-dusted ridgelines and the ever-changing skies of the Blue Mountains. The inclusion of a freestanding stone bath and a wood-burning fireplace enhances the retreat's ambience, providing an ideal space for relaxation after a day spent exploring the surrounding wilderness. The cabin offers guests dramatic escarpment views and peaceful, untouched bushland. With golden light at sunrise and mist settling across the fields, it feels remote and restorative—an ideal escape for nature lovers, hikers, and anyone looking for a serene mountain retreat. - Lipno Lakeside Cabin | Les Archinautes | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Completed in 2021, the Lipno Lakeside Cabin is a 118-square-meter retreat located in the Bohemian Forest near Lipno Lake in the Czech Republic. Designed by the Lyon-based firm Les Archinautes, the cabin was built in place of a previous wooden structure and serves as a base for mountain sports enthusiasts. The design reinterprets principles of local Bohemian Forest architecture, featuring a compact, gabled shape and a rectangular floor plan. The architects placed great emphasis on connecting the cabin with its natural surroundings. The living space centers around a large, square, gabled window that frames views of the lake and the two mountain peaks behind it. Inside, the building's exposed cross-laminated timber (CLT) panel structure creates a warm, cozy atmosphere, bringing the scent, color, and feel of the forest indoors. The exposed wood was treated with hard wax oil with a UV filter to preserve its color over time. The cabin's thoughtful design accommodates both functionality and connection to nature. The ground floor includes a small room, bathroom, laundry room, and a sauna, with additional storage for sports equipment. An attic level features two bedrooms with circular windows, and another bathroom and pantry. The cabin is wrapped by a wooden terrace that is sheltered by the roof's overhang, providing flexible outdoor spaces for relaxing and storage. The construction utilized sustainable methods and local materials, with the wood-intensive build sequestering more CO2 than was produced. - Hee House | Studio Ellsinger | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Located just south of Hamburgsund on Sweden's west coast, the Hee House is a compact, 7x7 meter vacation cabin designed by Studio Ellsinger for a creative family. Completed in 2024, the cabin is set on a granite clearing amid a landscape of pines, rocks, and meadow grass. The design draws inspiration from the studio founders' own home, Villa Ellsinger, and was conceived as a modest structure that "grows upwards" to maximize its small footprint and address the harsh coastal climate of wind, rain, and salt spray. The house is oriented on a north-south axis, with a largely closed-off northern facade to shield it from neighbors and a nearby county road, while opening up with large windows to the south and east to capture sun and views of the forest and fields. The structure is a standout on its rural plot, topped with a distinctive, steep, hat-shaped roof and gables clad in untreated aluminum sheeting for durability. A cantilevered canopy extends from the structure, providing a covered entrance. To create a spacious, unobstructed internal volume, the roof loads are transferred to a horizontal glue-laminated timber frame that sits atop the exterior walls, visible from the outside. Inside, the walls are clad in warm, untreated pine, which contrasts with the red tiles on the kitchen floor. The interior features bespoke furniture and an open-plan living and kitchen area with a high ceiling. An oversized bookshelf serves multiple functions as a room divider, storage, and structural support for the loft, which contains a children's sleeping area, a sofa bed, and a workspace. A custom-built wood-burning stove is also incorporated within the bookshelf. Maritime-themed circular prisms in the front door and loft windows nod to the cabin's seaside location and spread light into the entryway. - Budapest South Gate Masterplan | Snøhetta | ZHIG
URBAN PLANNING | Masterplan | Snøhetta's proposal for a new city district on a brownfield site in the Hungarian capital of Budapest centers on the deliberate use of water to define the site and drive its environmental approach. Designed for density, this urban vision creates a distinct identity for this new urban quarter next to the water. Central to the identity of Budapest is the Danube, Europe's second-longest river that runs through ten countries. Yet the city’s streets, public transport infrastructure, and ferry moorings impede access to the river in the center of the city, making direct contact with the water nearly impossible. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/9756fd_4ff37ef246b14fc7a61c6d2e03398b1b~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_2000,h_1756,al_c,q_90/Budapest%20South%20Gate%20Masterplan%20(1).jpg Please Wait Budapest South Gate Masterplan (10).jpg Budapest South Gate Masterplan (11).jpg Budapest South Gate Masterplan (2).jpg 1/4 0 Product 6.1K Views 0 0 Pin Pin Private Public x Appreciators Appreciated Appreciate Please Log in Budapest South Gate Masterplan Lechner Ödön fasor, 1095 Budapest, Hungary Architects: Snøhetta Snøhetta Architecture Office Norway Area: Year: City: Client: 135 hectares 2020 Budapest BFK Budapest Development Centre Construction: - Category: URBAN PLANNING Project Type: Masterplan Post Type: Building Country: Hungary Photographers: the architects Description: Snøhetta's proposal for a new city district on a brownfield site in the Hungarian capital of Budapest centers on the deliberate use of water to define the site and drive its environmental approach. Designed for density, this urban vision creates a distinct identity for this new urban quarter next to the water. Central to the identity of Budapest is the Danube, Europe's second-longest river that runs through ten countries.
