LODGES | Cabin | Constructed in 2024 by EERI Studio (Everyday Essentials Research Institute), the Spark Lodges are a set of modular, prefabricated holiday cabins located at the YDD Resort in Changsha, China. The three-story lodges, with a floor area of 76 square meters, were designed for a tourist village in Jinkeng, Hunan, and draw inspiration from the area's rich history, particularly its connection to the fireworks industry. The design harmoniously blends contemporary industrial materials with the natural, rural surroundings of rice fields and the distant Lianyun Mountains. The exterior of the cabins is composed of green-painted steel frames, pine planks, and most notably, translucent polycarbonate panels that wrap around the roof and certain wall sections. The polycarbonate material, in particular, was chosen for its cost-effectiveness and ability to create a dynamic and "sparkling" effect as light conditions change. These translucent forms give the structures a striking, ethereal quality, especially when viewed against the backdrop of the rice fields and mountains. The interior of each lodge is designed to create a continuous and changing viewing experience for its occupants. On the ground floor, large, three-sided, floor-to-ceiling windows provide a panoramic, horizontal view of the rice fields, intentionally blurring the line between inside and out. Moving up to the second-floor bedroom, the windows become smaller and more strategically placed, framing "close-up, square-shaped paintings" of the landscape and ensuring privacy. The highest level is a loft space that opens up vertically, offering an expansive view of the distant mountains and framing it like a long, vertical Chinese Shan-shui painting. MULTI-FUNCTIONAL | Studio | Situated within the expansive, 1,000-acre Clear Rock Ranch near Johnson City, Texas, the Clear Rock Lookout is a 450-square-foot structure completed in 2016 and designed by Ryan and Stephanie Lemmo of Lemmo Architecture and Design. The lookout was conceived as a multi-purpose building, serving as a hunting blind, a writing studio, and an observation deck that provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Texas Hill Country. It is intentionally nestled below a limestone cliff edge, requiring it to be "discovered" by those approaching from the top of the mesa. The design is a celebration of simple materials and low-tech methods, with a focus on artistry and craftsmanship. To contrast with the ranch's more traditional Hill Country vernacular, the lookout features a modern form and was constructed with naturally weathering steel, also known as Cor-Ten steel. This choice was inspired by the owner's past, which included welding oil tanks, and allows the structure to age naturally and blend in with the surrounding terrain. Inside, the rough exterior gives way to a softer palette, with plain walls, wooden ceilings, and large floor-to-ceiling windows that fill the space with light and frame the views. The interior space is divided into a writing studio and a hunting blind, connected by a walkway that wraps around the exterior and leads to the rooftop observation deck. The careful detailing and use of warm woods contribute to the building's aesthetic as a "jewel box in the landscape". The thoughtful placement and design of the lookout were recognized with a 2017 AIA Austin Design Award. A single surface can transition from a desk to a sofa to a kitchen counter. The sleeping loft is nestled beneath the pitched roof, while a small kitchen and a bathroom with a waterless toilet are also incorporated. RESIDENTIAL | Lodge | Tucked into an ancient woodland in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in southern England, the Looking Glass Lodge by Michael Kendrick Architects is an eco-friendly cabin designed for immersion in nature with minimal environmental disruption. The lodge was commissioned by a client whose parents had spent decades cultivating the woodland, and the project's goal was to share the landscape with guests while preserving the area's sensitive ecology. The modest, 49-square-meter structure is deliberately unobtrusive, appearing to float among the trees on its sloped site. A key feature of the design is the use of floor-to-ceiling electrochromic glass facades on the front and rear of the lodge. This intelligent glazing automatically adjusts its transparency to provide privacy and control solar heat gain, while also preventing light pollution at night, which helps protect the local bat population. RESIDENTIAL | House | The Ogimachi House is a minimalist residential retreat in Nagoya, Japan, designed by Tomoaki Uno Architects and completed in 2019. The house was commissioned by a client for his mother, who needed a secluded and peaceful space to recover from an illness. To create a quiet, therapeutic environment that ensures privacy, the architects constructed a windowless cubic volume on a narrow lot, drawing light and air instead from the ceiling. The exterior is defined by a traditional Japanese approach to construction, with cedar siding joined without nails, a technique known as itakura. This method, originally used for storehouses, provides excellent fire resistance and thermal insulation. The interior continues the minimalist aesthetic with a stripped-back material palette centered on natural cypress and cedar woods. Natural light enters through 37 skylights—32 fixed and 5 operable—which cast dynamic, moving shadows on the wooden surfaces throughout the day. The interior is a minimalist and uncluttered space, with bespoke essential furniture and soothing neutral hues. The layout consists of a grid-like central area surrounded by a double-height corridor. The ground floor features open-plan living, dining, and kitchen areas, along with a bedroom, toilet, and washroom. A winding staircase leads to the upper floor, which contains four more private rooms, a small bridge, and a linear balcony. This design balances the need for privacy and solitude with an open flow that encourages tranquility and well-being, creating a space for reflection and recovery.
