- The Mountain Cabin | Kris Ghesquière | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Designed by Belgian art dealer and designer Kris Ghesquière, The Mountain Cabin is a secluded retreat located in the Betania mountains, a 45-minute drive from Tbilisi, Georgia. Originally conceived as a weekend getaway, the project evolved into a more permanent refuge for the designer. Nestled in a location with no electricity, phone reception, or neighbors, the cabin is a testament to mindful, solitary living. The small, one-room structure is built with a lightweight, timber-frame construction. A unique feature of the design is the use of sliding floor-to-ceiling glass doors on one side, which not only provide expansive views of the wooded surroundings but also fully open to connect the interior with the natural landscape. When fully open, the cabin essentially becomes a semi-enclosed terrace, blurring the line between inside and out. Inside, the space features a polished concrete floor and a central steel-plate fireplace that creates a focal point. A black, custom-built kitchen is integrated into the wall opposite the fireplace, while a bathtub is strategically placed in front of the large windows to maximize the view. The ceiling is finished with pine plywood panels, while a skylight over the bed bathes the room in natural light. The project was built over five months with the help of a small team of local carpenters. Materials were sourced locally, with the primary construction using timber and stone from the area, a choice that grounded the building in its natural surroundings. The home's design reflects a philosophy of prioritizing a connection to nature over modern conveniences, offering a quiet escape from the distractions of city life. - Fjällhus (Mountain Lodge) | PS Arkitektur | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Lodge | The Fjällhus, or Mountain Lodge, designed by PS Arkitektur, is a prefabricated holiday retreat located in the snowy fells of Härjedalen, Sweden. Conceived by architect Peter Sahlin in 2005 for his own family, the design is a modern interpretation of a traditional local barn. It has since been replicated for other clients seeking a simple, compact, and comfortable escape in a mountainous setting. The project's aesthetic is defined by a modest and modern approach, with a focus on functional design suited for cold climates. The exterior of the cabin features an ebony-stained clapboard facade that helps it blend into the surrounding woods. The design is deliberately understated, with clean lines that recall the classic barn shape. This simple form makes the lodge's prefabricated construction practical for delivery and assembly in remote locations. Inside, the design contrasts the dark exterior with a warm, natural material palette. The interior is clad in unfinished plywood, complemented by gray industrial kitchen cabinets, creating a balance of ruggedness and modern polish. The lodge was initially developed for Sahlin's personal use, highlighting its practical and personal origins. The design's success led to its subsequent production for other urban professionals who desired a quiet, modern vacation home that could withstand the harsh conditions of the Swedish fells. The prefabricated units are constructed off-site and delivered to their destination, a process that simplifies construction in the challenging mountain environment. The design's success led to its subsequent production for other urban professionals who desired a quiet, modern vacation home that could withstand the harsh conditions of the Swedish fells. The prefabricated units are constructed off-site and delivered to their destination, a process that simplifies construction in the challenging mountain environment. - Outside line | Daniel Libeskind Studio | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Housing | Outside Line, an installation situated in the Sports Park near the city of Uozu, Japan, was proposed as a place to contemplate the relationship between man and nature. The project was inspired by the search for a contemporary understanding of space and light, and its design was informed by a precisely determined web of conceptual, topographical relationships between objects and space, eye and mind. A red line orients itself upon an imaginary axis connecting the descending history of the Buried Forest Museum and the ascending horizon of the Tateyama mountain range. This line creates special, ever-changing qualities of light and shadow and appears different during different seasons. In winter, snow collects softly within its angles, and when it rains, water flows along its length toward the visitors’ path of ascension. This physical “connecting line” between thought and vision also highlights the beauty and mystery of the city of Uozu. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/9756fd_e232773a4a0947c3854b56928dc4eed4~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_1350,h_887,al_c,q_85/OUTSIDE%20LINE4.jpg 1/0 Private Public Pin Pin 0 x Appreciators 0 3D models Product 5.0K Views 0 Appreciated Appreciate Please login to appreciate Outside line Uozu, Toyama, Japan www.libeskind.com Source: Published on Sep 27, 2023 by: Civil Engineer Rosa Garcia Premium Member More Buildings from Japan Facts: Up Up Architecture Office Daniel Libeskind Studio United States Category: RESIDENTIAL Housing Project Type: Post Type: Building Country: Japan Photographers: Architects: Daniel Libeskind Studio Area: - Year: 1997 City: Uozu Construction: - Client Description: the architects Text description by Outside Line, an installation situated in the Sports Park near the city of Uozu, Japan, was proposed as a place to contemplate the relationship between man and nature. Our Studio is a collaboration of architects and designers that believe architecture is a practice of optimism. We approach our projects with the attitude that to make great places, you must believe in the future, but also remember the past. Studio Libeskind’s architecture emerges from the idea that a building should be expressive and reflect contemporary life. Innovation is at the core of our design process. We believe that bold design must be realized with sustainable technology and we strongly believe that the art of architecture lies in creating a maximum impact within the constraints of budgets and functionality. We know from experience that great architecture comes from working with great clients; however, architecture is a public art and we hold ourselves accountable not only to the client, but to the communities, and cities in which we build. Daniel and his partner Nina Libeskind established Studio Daniel Libeskind in Berlin, Germany, in 1989 after winning the competition to build the Jewish Museum Berlin. In February 2003, Studio Daniel Libeskind moved its headquarters from Berlin to New York City when Daniel Libeskind was selected as the master planner for the World Trade Center redevelopment. source: libeskind.com Category Housing Post Type Building Project Type RESIDENTIAL Country Japan Year 1997 Area - Client Photographers www.zhiig.com Premium Member Civil Engineer Rosa Garcia Collaborate 3D Design Suggest Materials Suggest Product Add Request Design © ZHIG Team Materials Suggested by Manufacturers: Model Full Name Details Details View more
- Krabbebu Cabin | KIMA Arkitektur | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Situated on the rocky shoreline of Ny-Hellesund, Norway, the Krabbebu Cabin is a simple yet thoughtfully designed holiday retreat that harmonizes with its rugged coastal landscape. Completed in 2022, the 47-square-meter cabin was designed by Oslo-based firm KIMA Arkitektur in collaboration with the owners, an internationally acclaimed furniture and product designer couple. Inspired by the aesthetic of local fishing huts, the cabin's minimal and modest silhouette is strategically placed among rocky outcrops to provide shelter from the elements. To maximize the small footprint for a family of five, the interior features an open-plan living room and kitchen, a bedroom, and a bathroom. The interior design, overseen by the client, incorporates custom-built kitchen furnishings to suit the compact space. The inside is clad entirely in pine wood, creating a warm, camp-like atmosphere that emphasizes the structure's materiality. The cabin is oriented toward the sea, with large windows providing expansive views of the water. A small outdoor deck and jetty further connect the residents with their surroundings, allowing for easy access to the water and coastal landscape. The exterior is also clad in pine wood, helping the cabin blend seamlessly into the Norwegian shore. The structure was built by local craftspeople, ensuring it reflects the regional building traditions. - Skatehouse 2 | Macu Bulgubure | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Skatehouse 2, designed by Argentine architect Macu Bulgubure and completed in 2021, is an off-grid cabin built for a skateboarder in the wild wetlands of the Paraná River near Rosario, Argentina. Situated in a flood-prone area, the structure is elevated on stilts for protection from rising waters and to allow services to be delivered off-grid. The cabin's design cleverly integrates a large skate ramp, which was originally planned as a separate structure, into its exterior, forming a curved, elevated deck. Beyond its function as a skating area, this curve also serves a dual purpose by providing shade for the interior from the high summer sun. The 76-square-meter cabin was constructed using a steel frame with locally sourced, treated eucalyptus and galvanized steel sheets, providing a durable exterior that stayed within budget. Inside, the two-story layout features a double-height living room with a wood-burning stove on the lower level, a kitchen, and a dining area, while a lightweight hanging staircase leads to a bedroom and bathroom on the upper floor. The interior is clad in wood veneer, creating a warm contrast with the steel frame. The house is entirely self-sufficient, with electricity provided by photovoltaic solar panels, water supplied by a combination of rainwater harvesting and the river, a solar-powered tank for hot water, and a biodigester for sewage treatment. With its unique, function-driven design and eco-conscious features, Skatehouse 2 stands as a highly personalized and sustainable home nestled in the remote Argentinian wetlands. RESIDENTIAL | House | When husband and wife and retired Metropolitan Opera performers sought to create a relaxing weekend escape in the Adirondacks they looked to PJCArchitecture, whose founder they had previously worked with both at the Opera and on the renovation of their former Upper West Side home. Following their directive to create a comfortable home that engages with its surroundings and provides plenty of space for entertaining, PJCA artfully constructed a three-story, 1910-square-foot house with two bedrooms and 2 1/2 bathrooms, as well as a separate 158-square foot boathouse with a third bedroom. As in the making of a dance or aria, the creation of this lakeside getaway was the result of a true collaborative process between the homeowners, design team, and local laborers.
