  • Smiljan Radić | ZHIG

Architecture Office | Smiljan Radić is an internationally recognized Chilean architect of Croatian descent known for his evocative and sculptural designs that blur the lines between architecture and art. Based in Santiago, he works in close collaboration with his wife, sculptor Marcela Correa, to create unique projects that explore the sensory and social conditions of materials. Radić often focuses on smaller-scale projects like experimental structures, installations, and residential buildings, but he has also undertaken larger commissions, including the 2014 Serpentine Pavilion in London, the VIK Winery in Chile, and the renovation of the Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art. His work often challenges traditional architectural norms, using a "pretty ugliness" approach to produce bold and unexpected forms. Radić does not maintain a website, adding to his reputation as a "hermetic" artist. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/9756fd_6a4dfe48a09843a8a8cce04f7d744657~mv2.png/v1/fill/w_1000,h_1001,al_c/Smiljan%20Radi%C4%87-zhiig.png PDFs & Articles Globe Our Gallery Globe Our Store Globe About Globe Projects & Articles Globe Pinterest Instagram YouTube Globe Smiljan Radić Chile Small Title 1995 Since Architecture Office ---- 1 Project 727 Views 0 Appreciate Appreciated Info. The project is a conscious ""exercise in repetition and replication,"" where Radić pays homage to two previous designs: Japanese architect Kazuo Shinohara's 1974 Prism House and his own 1997 Room built on the island of Chiloé. The off-grid, prefab cabin is composed of two distinct black volumes placed on a massive elevated timber deck, which offers views of the forest and a nearby solidified river of lava from a past volcanic eruption. Getting to the remote location required the building materials to be brought in via plane flights and car rides through rustic towns. The two structures of Casa Prisma each mirror one of the referenced designs. The first volume, known as the Room, features a gabled roof and was inspired by Radić's earlier work. The second, the Prism House, has a mono-pitched roof and replicates the isosceles triangle geometry of Shinohara's original design, including the interior's distinctive diagonal post. The exterior of both volumes is clad in black metal panels, with extensive glazing that allows light to pour into the spaces and frame panoramic views of the surrounding wilderness. The interior contains open-plan living and dining areas, with dorm-style bedrooms located in the upper A-frame section of one structure. Inside, red accent colors can be found on textiles and kitchenware, reminiscent of Radić's Room project. The home is designed for off-grid living, with solar panels and a battery bank providing power, and a wood-burning stove for heat. • Panorama House | Andrew Goodwin Designs | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | The Panorama House is a contemporary vacation home designed by Andrew Goodwin Designs for a five-acre property in Yucca Valley, California. Created as a retreat from the fast-paced life of Southern California, the 1,535-square-foot residence features a striking folded roof that creates a dynamic form and captures a 360-degree view of the surrounding desert landscape. The house was built with sustainability in mind, using a light-gauge metal building system to lift the structure off the desert floor. This approach minimizes the building's impact on the delicate desert environment. The simple, monochrome palette of materials allows the desert scenery to be the focal point. The distinctive folding roof design adds visual interest and creates a variation in the angles and lighting throughout the house. Over 1,100 square feet of partially covered deck space extends the living area outdoors. The 1,535-square-foot interior includes two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living area, kitchen, and laundry room. The home's design and furnishings, which included contributions from designer Julie Park, maintain a desert-modern aesthetic with contemporary colors and textures. Outdoor living: An integrated outdoor fireplace and wood storage are built into the facade, making the exterior decks functional for year-round use. A detached 600-square-foot carport provides shelter for vehicles. Awards and recognition In 2024, the Panorama House was recognized with an Award of Merit at the AIA CCC Design Awards. The award highlights the project's contemporary design and its successful integration into the secluded desert environment. • Cécile Lodges | Go-Box | ZHIG

CAMPING | Lodge | Cécile Lodge is a modular, off-grid tiny home built by Go-Box, located in a wooded area in Lac-Mégantic, Quebec. Designed as a prototype for a new resort project, the lodge is intended for adventure lovers, offering ski-in/ski-out and bike-in/bike-out access. The project emphasizes a strong connection to nature and a flexible, space-efficient living experience, inspired by the "van life" movement. The Go-Box design philosophy revolves around offering portable, prefab structures that can be combined and customized. For Cécile Lodge, the clients needed a small space with large floor-to-ceiling windows to invite the outdoors in. The result is a highly functional interior that incorporates movable, built-in furniture, reminiscent of a game of Tetris. A key feature is the convertible living area, which uses a pull-out bed to transform the main space into a large bedroom at night, suitable for a couple with two children. The interior boasts a simple aesthetic with finishes made from either Russian ply or pine. A small kitchenette is integrated into the layout, featuring a gas stove, kitchen accessories, and a mini-fridge. A full bathroom with a toilet and shower is also included. Outside, the lodge is finished with a low-maintenance steel exterior and a cedar or pine terrace, while inside, comfort is ensured with insulation and the option for a heat pump and heated floors. Located in the forest with mountain views, Cécile Lodge is off-grid but is equipped with a well and septic system. It serves as a retreat for those who wish to disconnect from daily life, refuel their energy, and immerse themselves in the surrounding natural environment. SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE | Medical Research Institute | This research and diagnostic centre, located in Lisbon, is a state-of-the art facility guided by some of the best scientists in the world today. the site is a truly extraordinary sweep of land, just where the river joins the Atlantic Ocean – the point from which Henry the Navigator, Vasco da Gama and the other great Portuguese pioneers left on their journeys into the unknown. The 3 units that constitute the project (the largest for the doctors and scientists, the second for theatre, the exhibition hall, the foundation offices etc., and the third is an open-air amphitheatre for the city) have been arranged to create a 125m long pathway leading diagonally across the site, towards the open seas. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/9756fd_eaaef4a910b3412491d04a37a85238f9~mv2.webp 1/0 Private Public Pin Pin 0 x Appreciators 0 3D models Product 4.7K Views 0 Appreciated Appreciate Please login to appreciate Champalimaud Centre Av. The 47-square-meter hut is a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional Scottish farming crofts, shepherd's shelters, and Swiss Alpine shacks. It was commissioned by art dealers Iwan and Manuela Wirth, who sought a private, remote space on their estate for entertaining guests. The design is a clever blend of regional vernacular architecture and 20th-century modernism. Its monolithic, wooden form draws inspiration from the simple aesthetic of local livestock buildings, while its irregular, strategically placed windows are reminiscent of Le Corbusier's iconic Chapelle Notre Dame du Haut at Ronchamp. These irregularly cut apertures precisely frame specific features of the surrounding landscape, including the granite tors of Ben Avon and a bend in the River Gairn. Constructed almost entirely from timber, the shieling (Gaelic for ""hut"") was designed to minimize its impact on the terrain. The structure features a simple cruck frame with deep, overhanging eaves. The roof is camouflaged with a layer of heather, moss, and stone gathered from the local hillsides, helping it blend into the moorland and providing additional insulation. The cozy interior is lined with spruce and features a long, communal dining table, a prominent wood-burning stove for heating, and subtle modern details like a suspended iron shelf for candles. The project was completed in 2016 and received several awards, including the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland Forestry Commission for Scotland Award in 2017. The house is situated in a large courtyard featuring historic Russian-style eclectic buildings, with the architects aiming to create a contemporary solution that respects this historic context. Originally a small security guard's bungalow measuring only 28.77 square meters, the structure had been expanded over time to serve as a family home. The main challenge for the architects was to satisfy the living needs of a family of three within the limited space while ensuring the renovated structure maintained a respectful dialogue with the surrounding protected buildings. Instead of simply replicating the historical Russian style, the design sought to strike a balance between modern living requirements and the historic neighborhood. To contend with Harbin's famously cold climate, a new foundation was dug two meters below ground to avoid damage from frost expansion in the frozen soil. The project was completed in 2017. Designed by the architecture firm Jumping House Lab, the 12-square-meter tower was conceived as a serene escape from the world, providing artists with a tranquil space for contemplation and observation. The building offers three distinct vistas: a broad view of a paddy field, an upward view of the sky for meditation, and a narrow horizontal view of a yard with pine trees and ponds. To create these different experiences, the architects designed a 3.2 by 3.8-meter wooden structure that is split by an interior wall, dividing the space into an "inward" half for quiet meditation and an "outward" half for taking in the views. The interior is thus separated into a bright and a shady area, each fostering a different atmosphere. The overall appearance and layout of the tower were dictated by the views it frames. The project was completed while the surrounding community was still undergoing renovation, with the project being 80% finished. The architects noted that this flaw reflected the distance between the ideal and reality, but also contributed to the tower's status as an absolute spiritual space. The design is simple, elevated, and intended to help visitors reconnect with nature. RETREAT & WELLNESS | Cabin | Named after the Finnish word for "candle," the Kynttilä cabin by ORTRAUM Architects is a tiny, sustainable meditation retreat located on a narrow, forested peninsula in eastern Finland. Sited on Lake Saimaa, near Savonlinna, the 15-square-meter cabin was designed with a Zen philosophy of "nothingness," stripping the design to its bare minimum to create a space for spiritual and visual focus. At night, the illuminated cabin shines on the lake like a warm candle, a key part of its design concept. The cabin was designed to minimize its impact on the protected nature reserve, and the process of building it reflects this commitment. To avoid damaging the forest vegetation, a temporary road was built for a single day to assemble the prefabricated structure. The vegetation was then restored to its original state once the construction was finished. The structure is primarily composed of cross-laminated timber (CLT), which is exposed on the interior to create a warm, minimalist, and natural aesthetic. The exterior is clad in larch boards, allowing the cabin to blend harmoniously with its surroundings. The gabled ends of the cabin feature full-height glazing, maximizing the connection to nature and providing panoramic views of the water on both sides of the peninsula. The interior includes built-in furniture and a sleeping bunk accessed by a ladder, demonstrating an efficient use of the compact space.
