RESIDENTIAL | House | As an artistic architectural response to Australia’s coastline and the contours of the rural landscape, Peninsula House forms a dramatic sculptural relic, weathered by its context. The dwelling is located on the high point of the site overlooking a coastal stretch of Flinders with Bass Strait beyond. Approached along a meandering driveway, a ribbon of rammed earth rises monumentally 10 meters into the air, wrapping behind the dwelling, before gradually tapering and returning to the landscape. The elevation has minimal glazing and considerable thermal mass – stabilising the heat from the afternoon sun. A notch midway along the wall, forms a shadow line, subtly defining the entry. Crossing the entry threshold, a lush, planted atrium defines the building’s axial centre, and allows natural light to flood into the interior. Bending hallways snake from the atrium to create three distinct zones – a living zone for entertaining, a bedroom zone, and a recreation zone. The private master bedroom sits above the living zone, accessed by a sweeping stair cloaked in darkness. The main double height living space dramatically rises towards the glazing and the expansive views of the rural terrain and ocean. The sweeping parabolic ceiling affords a unique acoustic quality to the space that accommodates the sound from the owner’s grand piano and collection of musical instruments. Adjacent to the main living space is a large, sheltered terrace fulfilling the client’s brief to host grand poolside events with views of the valley and water. Each of the five bedrooms and main living spaces celebrates views of the rural context and surrounds. At the end of an evocative hallway, lined on one side with rammed earth and slot windows, lies a purpose-built recording studio. The dark, natural external material palette of charred timber and rammed earth shrouds the building, selected for its robust and low-maintenance qualities. The charred battens cloak the building mass allowing it to recede into the rural context as an enigmatic form. Internally the thematic quality of darkness continues with black mosaic tiles, black timber battens, blackened brass, and black terrazzo flooring. There is an emphasis on the shifting nature of light and shadow along curving surfaces and forms of walls and openings. The monochromatic tones frame views of the natural colours present in the surrounding setting. Designed by BCW Collective and inaugurated in 2021, the bivouac is set at an altitude of 2,528 meters in the secluded Vertosan Valley, near the alpine lakes of Dzioule. Its design is both functional and deeply symbolic, reflecting Brédy's spirit and connection to the mountains he loved. The project was initiated by the Brédy family and was the result of an invited competition organized by YACademy and Cantieri d’Alta Quota. The winning proposal by BCW Collective was chosen for its ability to poetically and practically interpret the rugged mountain landscape and honor Brédy's memory. The cantilevered structure, which appears to launch into the void, is a poignant architectural gesture that evokes the loss of a cherished member of the community. Positioned on a rock slab, the shelter serves as a new landmark in the Vertosan Valley. The bivouac is designed for both introspection and an immersive experience of the surrounding mountains. The south-facing shelter is strategically oriented to frame dramatic views of peaks like the Grivola and Gran Paradiso, a summit Brédy had climbed. The minimalist interior focuses occupants on the landscape outside. The 12 m² interior is functional and warm, clad in wood panels. Six bunks made from climbing cord line the sides, leading to a common area with a large window. A vestibule provides space for gear storage. The cabin features a solar panel to charge mobile devices, allowing for an off-grid experience. The bivouac was prefabricated in modules to minimize its environmental impact and facilitate transport to the remote location. The structure was built in three parts, which were then delivered by helicopter and assembled on-site in a matter of days. A steel frame foundation secures the structure directly to the rock, ensuring minimal disruption to the landscape. This frame supports insulated timber panels. The exterior is covered in dark, aluminum cladding selected for its durability and resistance to harsh weather conditions. Positioned on a rock slab, the shelter serves as a new landmark in the Vertosan Valley. The bivouac is designed for both introspection and an immersive experience of the surrounding mountains. The south-facing shelter is strategically oriented to frame dramatic views of peaks like the Grivola and Gran Paradiso, a summit Brédy had climbed. The minimalist interior focuses occupants on the landscape outside. The 12 m² interior is functional and warm, clad in wood panels. Six bunks made from climbing cord line the sides, leading to a common area with a large window. A vestibule provides space for gear storage. The cabin features a solar panel to charge mobile devices, allowing for an off-grid experience. The bivouac was prefabricated in modules to minimize its environmental impact and facilitate transport to the remote location. The structure was built in three parts, which were then delivered by helicopter and assembled on-site in a matter of days. A steel frame foundation secures the structure directly to the rock, ensuring minimal disruption to the landscape. This frame supports insulated timber panels. The exterior is covered in dark, aluminum cladding selected for its durability and resistance to harsh weather conditions. A commitment to integration with nature is highlighted by the architects' decision not to install blinds or curtains, allowing for a direct experience of the weather, time of day, and sounds of the outdoors. The program extends outdoors onto a deck, which features an outdoor table, grill, and a wood-fired hot tub. INFRASTRUCTURE | Airport | Queen Alia International Airport continues the practice’s explorations of the airport terminal as a building type and sets out a vision for an environmentally sensitive, regionally apt, airport architecture. Designed to serve as the main gateway to Amman – one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world – its design resonates with a sense of place and local culture. Strategically the building secures Amman’s position as the main hub for the Levant Region. Logistically, it allows the airport to grow by 6 per cent per annum for the next twenty-five years, increasing capacity from 3 million to 16 million passengers per annum by 2030. In response to local building expertise and Amman’s climate, where summer temperatures vary markedly between daytime and night time the building is constructed entirely from concrete, the high thermal mass of the material providing passive environmental control. The tessellated roof canopy comprises a series of shallow concrete domes, which extend to shade the facades. To enable seamless future expansion, each dome is a modular unit. The domes branch out from the supporting columns like the leaves of a desert palm and daylight floods the concourse through split beams at the column junctions. Echoing the veins of a leaf, a geometric pattern based on traditional Islamic forms is applied to each exposed soffit. The terminal is glazed on all sides to open up long views to the aircraft on the apron and aid orientation. Two piers of departure gates run along either side of the central building, which contains the main processing areas and shops, lounges and restaurants. Between these volumes, open-air courtyards draw on vernacular Arabic architecture and contribute to the terminal’s environmental strategy: the plants and trees help to filter pollution and pre-condition the air before it is drawn into the air handling system. HOSPITALITY | Studio | The Atelier Nyp is a sustainable artist's studio and guesthouse designed by Studio Bua on the site of a former sheep shed in remote western Iceland. Completed in 2023, the cabin was built on the repurposed concrete foundation of the original structure, which had been destroyed by extreme weather. This approach minimized the project's environmental impact and maximized existing resources, both material and cultural. Located in Skarðsströnd, the cabin is part of a broader development by Studio Bua of former farm buildings into a home, cultural spaces, and additional guesthouses. The project is named after the Nypurhyrna mountain that rises up from behind it. The cabin features a deliberately simple, jet-black corrugated steel exterior that references the local vernacular and protects against the harsh Icelandic weather. Its off-center pitched roof echoes the distinctive shape of one of the area's dominant mountain peaks. The interior features exposed cross-laminated timber (CLT) walls, which create a warm and cozy atmosphere. The space is divided into two independent units: a workspace with living quarters for the artist and her husband, and a self-contained mini-apartment for guests. Located in Skarðsströnd, the cabin is part of a broader development by Studio Bua of former farm buildings into a home, cultural spaces, and additional guesthouses. The project is named after the Nypurhyrna mountain that rises up from behind it. The cabin features a deliberately simple, jet-black corrugated steel exterior that references the local vernacular and protects against the harsh Icelandic weather. Its off-center pitched roof echoes the distinctive shape of one of the area's dominant mountain peaks. The interior features exposed cross-laminated timber (CLT) walls, which create a warm and cozy atmosphere. The space is divided into two independent units: a workspace with living quarters for the artist and her husband, and a self-contained mini-apartment for guests. Salvaged materials were incorporated throughout the project, including a staircase from a historic Reykjavík building and kitchen units from a 1950s apartment. Overlooking the Granasjøen lake, the structure serves as a modern reinterpretation of the traditional Norwegian gapahuk, or lean-to. It was designed in close collaboration with the client to serve a range of purposes, including a shelter, summer house, bath house, or grill shed. The cabin's design is heavily influenced by its surrounding landscape. The angled walls and roof help the small building blend seamlessly into the rugged, mountainous environment. A traditional turf roof provides insulation and further integrates the structure with the landscape by mimicking the natural greenery. The exterior is clad in dark brown stained wood, which was chosen to complement the existing main cabin on the property. Inside, the cabin is designed for both relaxation and appreciation of the outdoors. Large, floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors on the front facade can be opened up, blurring the line between inside and out and offering expansive views of the lake and mountains. A built-in wood bench wraps around two sides of the room, providing ample seating that faces the view. A small, built-in fireplace adds warmth and a cozy focal point. The interior features simple wood finishes and stone flooring that continues out onto the terrace. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Chajá House is a refuge in the Maldonado department of Uruguay, designed by the TATÚ Arquitectura studio and completed in 2020. The project transformed an old, abandoned agricultural shed, formerly used to store fodder and tools, into a secondary residence for a client who lives in France. The intervention was conceived to preserve the rural identity and the original structure of the building, without modifying its main volume. The architecture is characterized by its focus on reuse and integration with the natural environment. The design consisted of wrapping the existing masonry structure with a new, permeable wooden skin. This outer membrane not only conceals the new functional programs but also creates interstitial spaces that expand the use of the home. The project seeks to pay homage to the humble typology of the Uruguayan countryside while transforming it into a poetic architectural gesture. The interior is a diaphanous volume with an open plan, defined by a furniture wall that integrates the kitchen, pantry, and a desk. Above the dining area, a loft houses the bed and wardrobes. The bathroom and service areas remain in an external volume, honoring the rural traditions of Uruguay. Located in Quirindi, New South Wales, Australia, the project was completed in 2024 and is available for short-term stays. The estate is a minimalist, single-story retreat that honors the local landscape and incorporates sustainable, self-sufficient features. The name "Gilay" is the Gomeroi word for moon, a detail that reflects the design team's consultation with a local Aboriginal Elder during the process. The structure features a distinctive, sloping sheet metal roof with deep overhangs that protect the building from the harsh Australian sun. This roof form echoes the simple silhouette of a tent or shed, lending a humble, earthy feel. The exterior is clad in charred timber, a nod to the traditional Indigenous practice of fire management and regeneration. The interior uses warm, natural timber, symbolizing regrowth. The 40 m² interior is largely open-plan, with the king-sized bed integrated into the main living space to maximize the experience of the panoramic views. Large double-glazed windows and a curved cutaway in the roof are strategically placed to frame spectacular views of the Liverpool Plains, the nearby mountain ranges, and the sky for moon-gazing. The Gilay Estate was designed for full off-grid functionality and self-sufficiency. A 6.4-kW rooftop solar array with an 11.4-kW battery provides all of the building's energy. A 60,000-liter tank collects 100% of the rainwater needed for the accommodation. Strategic glazing and generous roof overhangs minimize heat gain from the summer sun. The project also incorporates greywater systems and native landscaping, further cementing its low-impact approach.
