  • Little Black Cabin | SMITH Architects | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Renovation | Designed and built by SMITH Architects, the Little Black Cabin in Blackheath, Australia, is a 28-square-meter architectural restoration project completed in 2021. The project saw a dilapidated 120-year-old cottage, originally built for workers in the Blue Mountains, transformed into a luxurious and peaceful retreat. Instead of a full demolition, the architects opted to restore the existing structure by wrapping it in a new, insulated skin of charred cedar cladding, a technique known as shou sugi ban. This dark, textured facade provides protection against the elements and bushfire attacks, and allows the cabin to blend seamlessly with its natural bushland setting. Recycled and repurposed materials were used throughout the project, with bricks from the original structure used to rebuild the foundations and combined with recycled concrete blocks to terrace the sloping site and create gardens. The interior of the one-bedroom, one-bathroom cabin retains the character and history of the original cottage, with the salvaged and restored historical framework visible from within. This contrasts with the contemporary and highly crafted new insertions, creating a dialogue between the past and present. Large windows frame views of the surrounding rugged escarpment and valley, allowing guests to absorb the tranquil scenery. The cabin is used as a guesthouse, providing a luxurious escape for visitors to recharge and explore the nearby mountains and villages. • Terebuty Cabin | Andrew Skinder | ZHIG

HOSPITALITY | Cabin | The guest house in the picturesque village of Terebuty, Belarus, situated along the banks of a river with a complex terrain, was designed as a straightforward yet elegant solution to the owner’s aspiration for an additional recreational space. The structure features a vertical wooden finish and is elevated on metal stilts, which minimizes its impact on the landscape and allows it to harmonize with the environment. The design not only respects the natural topography but also enhances the overall aesthetic appeal of the location. Inside, the guest house comprises a main guest room, a bathroom, and a steam room. The sleeping area is elevated, providing occupants with stunning views of the river, while the steam room boasts large windows that offer a panoramic perspective of the surrounding scenery. Additionally, the cabin includes a terrace that is not only situated on the roof but also wraps around the house, enhancing the views and offering an outdoor space for relaxation. The interior design strikes a balance between simplicity and comfort, featuring accent elements alongside finishes made from processed plywood. This combination creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, perfect for unwinding in nature. • Chalet M | Silvia Acar Arquitetura | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Completed in 2018, Chalet M is a tiny, minimalist cabin designed by São Paulo-based architect Silvia Acar Arquitetura for a secluded woodland site in São Lourenço da Serra, Brazil. The 270-square-foot structure was created as a peaceful retreat for its owners to reconnect with nature. Due to the challenging, remote terrain and lack of vehicle access, all building materials were selected to be lightweight and were carried to the site by hand, ensuring the cabin has a minimal impact on the environment. The cabin was elevated off the ground on six cylindrical concrete columns, allowing it to rest lightly on the forest floor. The exterior is comprised of a massive hardwood structure covered with OSB plywood, a Tyvek air and water barrier, and corrugated metal sheets for the outer layer. Its dark exterior helps the structure blend seamlessly into the lush surrounding forest. A floor-to-ceiling glass facade is the focal point of the design and includes sliding glass panels that open onto a wooden deck. This feature visually and physically connects the interior with the landscape, which includes a lake and mountain views. Inside, the cabin's material palette consists of thermoacoustic insulation and light-toned paricá plywood for the walls, ceiling, and built-in furniture. A prefabricated fiberglass box base anchors the sleeping and storage area. The custom-built furnishings and compact design provide a cohesive, multifunctional space for sleeping, cooking, and simply enjoying the natural surroundings. • Black Teahouse | A1Architects | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Teahouse | The Black Teahouse, designed by the Prague-based A1Architects, is a small, family-owned gathering space in Česká Lípa, Czech Republic. Completed in 2011, it is situated on the southern edge of a garden and is intended as a tranquil location for sharing tea. The design harmonizes with its surroundings by reflecting off a small, dark lake and blending in with a nearby pine forest. The teahouse's exterior is clad in charred larch, a wood preservation technique that gives the structure its striking black color and enables it to become a natural part of the environment. The structure features a green roof covered in local grasses, which further integrates the building into the landscape. Sliding doors allow inhabitants to alter the space's openness and privacy, framing specific views of the lake and forest. When the doors are closed, a gilded oculus fills the interior with sunlight and creates a unique play of light and shadow. The interior is crowned with a conical soffit crafted from woven sisal ropes, a geometric element that provides a rich texture. Japanese-inspired elements: A central hearth acts as the focal point for preparing tea, while rounded, clay-plastered walls contain three bamboo vases, reminiscent of a Japanese tokonoma for displaying flowers or calligraphy. The teahouse extends out over the water via a large veranda made of larch planks. The design emphasizes a quiet, ceremonial gathering experience, following Japanese teahouse traditions of minimalist space and appreciation for nature. The use of sustainable and locally sourced materials, such as the charred larch and pond stones, helps minimize the project's environmental impact. Construction details Architects: Lenka Křemenová and David Maštálka. Carpenter: Vojtěch Bilišič. Materials: Oak beams form the frame, which stands on stones sourced from a nearby pond. Project location: Česká Lípa, Czech Republic. Completion date: The project was completed in 2011. Awards: The Black Teahouse received the 2012 Czech National Architectural Award. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/a0ba0f_2840e07873134770a97a5a4aa20e6efe~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_1000,h_750,al_c,q_85/a1-black-teahouse-1.jpg 1/0 Private Public Pin Pin 0 x Appreciators 0 3D models Product 5.0K Views 0 Appreciated Appreciate Please login to appreciate Black Teahouse Ceska Lipa, Czechia a1architects.cz Source: Published on Sep 12, 2025 by: Media Micro Homes Premium Member More Buildings from Czechia Facts: Up Up Architecture Office A1Architects Czechia Category: RESIDENTIAL Teahouse Project Type: Post Type: Building Country: Czechia A1Architects Photographers: Architects: A1Architects Area: 10 m² Year: 2011 City: Česká Lípa Construction: Vojtěch Bilišič Client Description: the Architects Text description by The Black Teahouse, designed by the Prague-based A1Architects, is a small, family-owned gathering space in Česká Lípa, Czech Republic. And we, in our work, look for the magic of these little things in ordinary objects around us and in things that inspire us. The first independent projects of A1 Architects date back to the year 2003. Two years later, a studio and a creative workshop were formed in Prague. Today, this studio is built on the works of architects Lenka Křemenová and David Maštálka, who initially studied together at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. • House MM | Chris Collaris Architects | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | House MM, designed by Chris Collaris Architects and completed in 2017, is a sustainable and minimalist dwelling in the north of Amsterdam, Netherlands. Working within the tight 60-square-meter footprint of a dilapidated brick house, the architects created a modern and deceptively spacious three-level home that prioritizes natural light, clean lines, and an integrated indoor-outdoor experience. The design of House MM is a masterclass in maximizing space within a small area while adhering to a passive-building philosophy. The structure's asymmetrical, steeply pitched roof is cantilevered, increasing the upper-level ceiling height and creating an extra mezzanine and attic, which adds to the perceived spaciousness of the interior. The exterior is entirely clad in blackened, wax-conserved pine, giving the home a sculptural, minimalist appearance. Details like the roof edges and gutters are integrated to keep the lines as clean as possible, creating a seamless, monolithic form. The design embraces passive building technology. The facades and roof are constructed with high-density insulated sandwich panels—materials typically used in large industrial buildings but tailored here for a smaller residential application. Full-height glazing at the rear of the house opens onto a terrace and garden, visually and physically extending the interior space outdoors. In a nod to the home's history, bricks from the original house were salvaged and reused to create a central core in the interior, anchoring the design in its past. A refined palette of materials enhances the home's contemporary feel while retaining a warm, natural character. Wax-conserved and black-stained pinewood was used for the facade and roof, providing a low-maintenance, elegant finish. Salvaged interior bricks form a central core, which houses a staircase and divides the living, kitchen, and dining areas. Birch multiplex cabinetry and built-in units are used for storage throughout the house. Polished concrete provides a sleek, modern, and durable finish. The central stair void, topped by a skylight, allows natural light to filter down and maximize the brightness of the ground floor. • Selestranda House | bark arkitekter | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Renovation | The Selestranda House is a residential renovation and extension project located in Time, Norway, near the scenic southwest coast. Completed in 2016 by bark arkitekter, the project breathed new life into a 50-year-old cottage, originally designed in 1961 by architect Atle Sørby. The renovation successfully balanced the building's historical integrity with the functional demands of modern living. The house sits on a relatively flat plot surrounded by the distinctive landscape of the region, featuring long sloping fields, beaches, and dunes separated by old drystone walls. Its proximity to the shoreline places it within a landscape-preservation area, which meant the architects worked closely with local authorities during the building process. The architectural approach involved respecting the original design while modernizing the interior and expanding the living space. The cottage's original pitched roof with pulled-down gables, a reinterpretation of the traditional "Jærhus" typology, was preserved. This design is crucial for withstanding the harsh local weather conditions. To maintain this connection to the past, local craftsmen carefully removed, stored, and re-laid the original roof tiles, which were sourced from local brick factories. The renovation involved a strategic reorganization of the interior space. The walls and ceiling of the main volume were opened up to create a single large, open-plan common area. This space now accommodates the living, dining, and kitchen functions, creating a bright and expansive atmosphere. A new 88 m² annex was constructed to house private functions. This addition includes a bedroom, a bathroom, and a storage room, allowing for a clearer separation of public and private zones within the home. Large glass windows were installed to maximize natural light and offer the homeowners uninterrupted views of the surrounding coastal scenery. The interior features a minimalist, no-frills aesthetic, with a neutral color palette and light timber finishes creating a calm and functional living space. The architects focused on simple, high-quality materials to complement the building's modest scale. • Hut-Inspired House | Atelier Hajný | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | Hut-Inspired House is a residential project in Říčany, Czech Republic, designed by Prague-based Atelier Hajný. Completed in 2023, the family home was built on the site of a holiday cabin that the client had frequented since childhood. As the surrounding area began to change with new zoning plans favoring family houses, the original, beloved hut was destined for demolition. To honor the client's nostalgic connection to the site, Atelier Hajný designed a new, modern home that subtly referenced the shape and appearance of the old cabins. The design for the 180-square-meter home successfully balances the sentimental and the contemporary. The house's elongated, gabled form, with its prominent roof and overhangs, reflects the familiar shape of the traditional huts once common in the area. The building appears as a single-family dwelling, but it is cleverly designed to contain two standalone studio apartments on the ground floor, in addition to the main two-story home. The exterior is clad in charred timber, a durable and natural material that gives the house a rustic yet modern aesthetic. Light wooden shading slats on the gable ends add visual interest and regulate sunlight. Integration with nature: A cantilevered balcony provides a sheltered outdoor space, while the design's overall form harmonizes with the changing character of the landscape. The 180-square-meter interior is designed to be warm, functional, and filled with natural light. Exposed cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels provide a warm, natural contrast to the darker facade. The ground floor contains the entrances to the two studio apartments, a technical area, and the main living room with an integrated kitchen. The upper floor is dedicated to the main apartment's private quarters, including bedrooms, a study, and a bathroom. Custom built-in furniture, including cabinetry made from oak and birch veneer, helps to optimize space and maintain a clean, uncluttered look. The Hut-Inspired House was designed with energy efficiency and modern comfort in mind. Features include: Electric underfloor heating. Recuperative air conditioning. Materials chosen for durability and sustainability, such as charred wood and CLT panels. Designed by Atelier Hajný and completed in 2024, the project transformed a derelict, 1970s single-story hut into a contemporary and airy two-story home. The clients, a couple from Prague, wanted a tranquil escape for weekends and remote work, but faced challenges from strict local zoning regulations. Atelier Hajný's design solution addressed the need for more space while adhering to a maximum height limit of 7.7 meters. The most distinctive feature is the truncated, asymmetrical hip roof, topped with a pair of skylights. This design minimized the building's overall height and prevented it from blocking the views of neighboring properties. The architects kept the original 1970s stone base, stripping the building to its foundation. A new, modern metal structure was then built upon this base, supported by a concrete slab and concealed pillars. The trapezoidal metal sheeting that clads the roof and façade gives the home a modern look while offering durability and minimal upkeep. The dark color helps the structure blend with the natural surroundings. The skylights not only provide natural light but also enable chimney ventilation, which, combined with a significant roof overhang, helps regulate the indoor climate throughout the year. Inside the 46-square-meter cabin, the design maximizes space and light to create a cozy and warm atmosphere. The interior is defined by an extensive use of light pine plywood with a prominent grain, which covers the walls, ceilings, and custom furniture. This contrasts with the dark, minimalist exterior, creating a brighter indoor environment. he ground floor features an open-plan layout connecting the living, dining, and kitchen areas. Large windows on the south and east sides provide dynamic views and flood the space with natural light. An attic bedroom is nestled under the asymmetrical roof, illuminated by the innovative skylight system. A small fireplace adds extra warmth and coziness to the main living area. The bathroom has a simple and modern aesthetic, with a gray plaster finish. HOSPITALITY | Mixed-use | Astana, the new capital of Kazakhstan, lies in an austere eastern landscape with an inhospitable climate that can generate temperatures of -35 degrees Celsius in winter and +35 degrees in summer. The Khan Shatyr Entertainment Center is designed to provide the city with a range of civic, cultural and social amenities all sheltered within a climatic envelope - 'a world within' - that offers a comfortable microclimate all year round, whatever the weather. The building's tented structure has great resonance in Kazakh history as the tent is a traditional nomadic building form - Khan Shatyr translates as 'the Tent of the Khan'. Located at the northern end of the city's formal axis, the masted structure soars 150 metres from a 200 x 195-metre elliptical base to form one of the highest peaks on the Astana skyline. Enclosing an area in excess of 100,000 square metres it comprises an urban-scaled park, with a 450-metre jogging track, along with a wide variety of shopping and leisure facilities, including restaurants, cinemas and entertainment spaces that can accommodate a varied programme of events and exhibitions. The park steps up the height of the building in undulating terraces and a water park, with wave pools and slides, weaves its way through the landscape. The tubular-steel tripod structure supports a suspended net of steel radial and circumferential cables, which is clad with a three-layer ETFE envelope, formed as 3.5 x 30-metre cushions - a very light, economical and thermally efficient solution. The translucent material allows daylight to wash the interiors while sheltering them from weather extremes. Specific enclosures within the envelope are air conditioned, but the open circulation areas are environmentally tempered, with target temperatures of +14 degrees Celsius in winter and +29 degrees in summer. Low-level jets direct cool air across the space, while vents at the apex induce natural stack-effect ventilation. The challenge in winter is to prevent ice forming on the inside of the envelope. • House MM | a2o2 arhitekti | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Renovation | House MM is a renovation project completed in 2020 by the Slovenian firm a2o2 arhitekti in Domžale, Slovenia. The project involved renovating a derelict early 20th-century house to retain its historic character while adapting it for modern living. The architects and owners aimed to present a financially viable and sustainable alternative to new construction, preserving a piece of the neighborhood's "anonymous built heritage". Design and architectural features Balancing old and new: The exterior of the original brick house, including the facades and window openings, was preserved. A new metal roof was installed to replace the original one, which was beyond repair. New, modern interventions were deliberately designed to be distinct from the old structure, creating a dialogue between the past and present. Open and layered interior: The interior was cleared of redundant layers to expose the original structure. A new wooden-clad service core was inserted inside, keeping it separate from the old walls. Vertical spatial sequence: The home is arranged vertically, featuring a kitchen and dining area at ground level. A double-height living space with a fireplace and a large window opens onto the garden, while a new mezzanine bedroom is situated above the kitchen. Materiality: The new additions are clad in timber, contrasting with the old masonry. The ground floor is finished with terrazzo, achieved by polishing the concrete flooring. The owners were actively involved in the renovation. With the help of a restoration specialist, they restored the original windows and helped with the interior paneling and terrazzo flooring. The project involved the extensive transformation of a worn-out 60-year-old family house into a modern, high-standard residence. Located in the village of Dvorce on the edge of a residential area, the house enjoys scenic views of the Vltava River. The architecture of the Green House is defined by a strong and refined atmosphere, with careful attention paid to the integration of interior details with the surrounding garden landscape. The design thoughtfully manipulates different types of light to enhance the living experience: A sophisticated, distinctive, fine scraped green render facade allows the house to blend into the surrounding vegetation, its appearance subtly shifting with the seasons. Semi-transparent facades and skylights offer soft, diffused light, while contrasting areas of twilight are also incorporated. A monumental studio window on the main level changes the atmosphere of the space depending on the time of day. The interior space is a blend of custom and existing furnishings, creating a comfortable and personalized Custom-made built-in furniture conceals service functions and entrances to private areas. Tables crafted from polished solid tropical padouk wood on a steel structure were designed specifically for the house. The client's own older furniture is discreetly integrated into the new design. The owners' personal photographs and paintings by contemporary artists hang on the walls. • Casa Cono | Estudio Atemporal | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | Completed in 2024, Casa Cono by Estudio Atemporal is a tranquil woodland retreat located in the forests near Valle de Bravo, Mexico. Designed for a young couple seeking an escape from urban intensity, the project harmoniously integrates living, working, and daily routines within its serene natural setting. The design respects the land's slope and incorporates existing trees, making nature a key part of the architecture. The structure consists of two rectangular volumes layered and rotated to create an L-shaped configuration that organizes the home's program on two levels and frames views of the forest. Translucent facades give the house a light appearance and connect the interior and exterior. Large windows frame views of the outdoors. The ground floor includes public areas like a patio, study, and open living, dining, and kitchen area. An internal staircase leads to the private areas upstairs. The house appears to float on the landscape from a distance, with views opening up upon entry. Changes in scale and materials create a warmer feel in the upper-level bedrooms. • Fritidsbolig, Slevik | Eirik Rønning Andersen, ZIS AS | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Constructed in 2023, the Fritidsbolig, Slevik is a vacation home situated along a quiet residential street in the coastal village of Slevik, Norway. The project involved replacing a smaller, traditional 1950s cabin with a more functional, modern holiday home. Architect Eirik Rønning Andersen of ZIS AS designed the new cabin, drawing inspiration from the area's older architectural traditions. The design uses traditional building methods, featuring white-painted batten cladding and a roof pitch similar to historical buildings in the region. The roof eaves are minimal, giving the structure a clean, contemporary appearance. A key feature of the house is the strategic placement of windows to create visual connections, maximize views, and allow natural light to fill the interiors. This intentional use of light makes the interior feel expansive and spacious. Inside, the home is characterized by light-colored wood, creating a warm, airy atmosphere. In contrast, the kitchen features dark, lacquered benches and cabinets. The interior space is divided into different levels by a series of steps, with a raised living area situated above the bedrooms and bathroom. The main living space extends the full length of the cabin, stretching from gable to gable. The design also incorporates several custom-built details, including a site-specific staircase connecting the different levels and slatted wooden sections that add screening and depth.
