  • Small House (La Petite Maison) | Lionel Ballmer | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Tiny Home | Designed by architect Lionel Ballmer, La Petite Maison is a small wooden house and workshop completed in 2021. Located in a wooded area within the tourist resort of Haute-Nendaz, Switzerland, the project sits on a plot that was originally owned by the client's family. Instead of building a large house, the architects chose to divide the plot and build this 860-square-foot home to create a more intimate atmosphere. The house is designed with a series of small, interconnected spaces, creating a maze-like feel that gives the impression of a larger living space. The exterior of La Petite Maison is a simple monolith clad in rough, untreated local larch strips, which allows it to blend harmoniously with its vegetal surroundings. The use of wood also reflects a regional tradition of historical mountain buildings, but with a modern contrast to the greenery. The interior revolves around a central staircase that serves five half-levels, with the common areas on the lower floors and the private rooms on the upper levels. A minimalist material palette, a nod to the area's building heritage, was chosen for its aesthetic and thermal qualities. The project's design was driven by the desire for a secluded space for the architect, his wife, and their cats to enjoy their wooded plot, while also densifying the existing land. The resulting central garden, created by the offset house and workshop, is described as being "cut off from the rest of the world" despite being in close proximity to a family chalet and a summer camp. • Love2 House | Takeshi Hosaka Architects | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | This house in the center of Tokyo is the home of a couple. The building area is only 18.84 square meters. Despite occupying a very small plot of land, they are able to live a prosperous and fulfilling life. The design incorporates two skylights of different sizes and heights, allowing direct sunlight and moonlight to pour into the room, creating a dynamic atmosphere that reflects the changing seasons. Within this compact Tokyo residence, residents can experience the passage of seasons firsthand. They enjoy an open-air bath on the bath terrace, taking in hot, cold, sunny, rainy, and snowy days every day. The garden features plants that can be seen from the dining space facing the street, blending indoor and outdoor living seamlessly. Collected LP records and books are lined up throughout the house, emphasizing a love for music and literature. The couple's philosophy is not to minimize their space but to maximize abundance, making the most of every corner. At the end of the large window is a private road accessible to local residents, adding a sense of community to their living environment. The garden is designed with a life road, serving both as a pathway and a planting area. Neighbors often talk about gardening, walking their dogs, and children frequently look into this small house with curiosity and interest, fostering a close-knit neighborhood atmosphere. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/a0ba0f_35c4edc7f97d4aa1b9f7592996e3b67f~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_2000,h_1875,al_c,q_90/Love2%20House-Takeshi%20Hosaka%20Architects-Photographer-KOJI%20FUJII%20(1).jpg 1/0 Private Public Pin Pin 0 x Appreciators 0 3D models Product 5.5K Views 0 Appreciated Appreciate Please login to appreciate Love2 House Tokyo, Japan hosakatakeshi.com Source: Published on Oct 6, 2024 by: Media Micro Homes Premium Member More Buildings from Japan Facts: Up Up Architecture Office Takeshi Hosaka Architects Japan Category: RESIDENTIAL House Project Type: Post Type: Building Country: Japan KOJI FUJII Photographers: Architects: Takeshi Hosaka Architects Area: 18 m² Year: 2019 City: Tokyo Construction: Client Description: the Architects Text description by This house in the center of Tokyo is the home of a couple. • Söderloftet | Fria Folket | ZHIG

HOTELS | Cabin | A tranquil wooden cabin perched on a hillside in Northern Sweden, the Söderloftet is a project by the architectural studio Fria Folket and is part of the Bergaliv landscape hotel. Completed in 2021, the small getaway cabin is located on a rock ledge on Åsberget mountain and offers a spectacular vista over the Ljusnan river valley. The name, meaning "South Loft," reflects its positioning. The structure is raised on slender pillars, a design choice that makes it appear to float among the surrounding treetops and balances the expansive landscape with a fine-tuned connection to the nearby forest. The 20-square-meter cabin consists of two main parts: a closed, heated living area and a large, open-air veranda that includes a covered viewing platform. The sheltered space features an extensive ceiling height of 4.5 meters, which provides an airy ambiance and allows for a smaller sleeping loft above the main living area. Inside, the design marries Nordic minimalism with Japanese-inspired aesthetics, using clean lines and light woods such as birch, fir, and heart pine. The flexible layout and minimal furnishings serve to emphasize the views of nature. A low wooden platform, for instance, can function as seating, a bed, or a space for yoga. To maximize its connection with the surrounding environment, the cabin's construction avoids plastics, and the walls and roof are insulated with flax fibers, a nod to traditional Nordic building methods. The Söderloftet stands as a serene and unobtrusive retreat, designed to help visitors escape a hectic life and find tranquility in nature. Completed in 2017, the hotel consists of a series of elevated wooden cabins designed to offer guests solitude and tranquility while minimizing their impact on the environment. Michelson, who also works for Tham & Videgård Arkitekter, was commissioned to create the cabins, which draw inspiration from traditional Swedish and Japanese design philosophies. The first cabin, known as Lofthuset ("the loft house"), was followed by the Söderloftet in 2021, and additional hideaways are planned. To reduce its visual impact and respect the landscape, each cabin is built on tall stilts that raise it above the ground and allow it to sway gently in the wind. This positioning gives guests a "high above the tree tops" view of the Ljusnan River valley below. The design is built around a concept of duality, with two contrasting spaces. The lower level of the 10-meter-tall structure is a compact, insulated space housing a combined living and sleeping area. This level features a wooden bench for resting and futon mattresses that can be hung on the wall to maximize space. Above, the upper level is an open-air deck with a gabled pinewood roof, offering uninterrupted views of the surrounding scenery and functioning as a peaceful vantage point. The cabins are constructed using a palette of natural materials. The exterior is clad in heart-pine and spruce wood, allowing the structures to blend into the forest, while the interior features pale birch plywood and ash. Following Nordic building traditions, the walls are insulated with flax fibers. With their minimalist and raw interiors, the cabins are designed to remove unnecessary noise and focus attention on the expansive natural landscape. • Kjerringholmen Summerhouse | Line Solgaard Arkitekter | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Summer House | Completed in 2022, the Kjerringholmen Cabin is a 62-square-meter holiday retreat situated on a small private island in the Hvaler archipelago, Norway. Designed by Line Solgaard Arkitekter, the cabin was conceived as an escape from city life, a philosophy deeply ingrained in Norwegian culture. The structure is elevated on steel pillars, which minimizes its footprint and allows it to coexist with the surrounding rocky terrain and landscape. The cabin's design consists of three interconnected volumes with mono-pitched roofs. Large windows and bay windows are strategically placed to take advantage of commanding southern views toward the Løperen fjord and the Ytre Hvaler National Parks. Clad in ash wood, the cabin blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings. The interior features an open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area that opens onto a central terrace, connecting the indoor and outdoor spaces. The compact design is meticulously planned to maximize functionality and comfort. Due to the island's limited access, the timber structure was prefabricated off-site and transported to the location. • Bellbird House | Bower Architecture | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | After a long search, our clients Cameron and Nicole found a property in the Bellbird Area of Blackburn, a classified National Trust area that has been protected against significant development since the 1960s. The Bellbird Area is a suburban bush setting, connected to the Blackburn Bush Corridor a critical habitat for birdlife and animals. The streetscapes retain a peaceful ambience with no footpaths, dominated by native vegetation. The site featured 41 existing established native trees, all of which were preserved in the creation of this home nestled amongst, and suffused by, the natural landscape. Cameron and Nicole’s brief to us was for a single storey family home that blended warmth and comfort, which was responsive to and respectful of the natural beauty of its bush surroundings. The wonderful tree canopies, textures, smells, sounds and colours of the site became the key drivers for the design. Internal sightlines at eye level were dominated by trunks and neighbouring properties, so we gave preference to abundant north-facing highlight windows which direct views up and out to the treetops above, flooding the interiors with daylight. Internally lined with Tasmanian Oak, these highlights developed into a synthesis of the external expression of the building, as angled roofs reach up to the tree canopies above. A light, natural material palette internally starts with a central spine of Australian limestone cladding, which wraps from the external entry into the heart of the house. External materials, such as black-oiled bandsawn Accoya, were selected to provide a contrasting backdrop to the grey-green of the eucalypts while mirroring bark like vertical texture. Centred around an open-plan kitchen, dining and living space which opens up to the landscape at the rear, the house is arranged to meet Cameron and Nicole’s brief for spaces to share with their two daughters, and spaces of solitude for all their individual pursuits – music, reading, study. This project is the result of a wonderful collaborative relationship between architect, builder and client. The building team treated each detail with craft and care, resulting in a meticulous outcome. Landscape designer Sam Cox created a whimsical and meandering garden featuring an abundance of native grasses. Cameron and Nicole have planted over 1400 indigenous plants and installed a pond to encourage wildlife back to the site. Bellbird House actively preserves this important area of natural habitat within suburbia. It is a house of activity and togetherness, a home where a family can connect with the natural environment and each other. Cam, Nicole and all of the project team are honoured and proud that Bellbird House has been shortlisted in the 2022 Victorian Architecture Awards, Residential Architecture Houses (New) category. Passive and active design principles are essential to the success of Bellbird House which achieves a 7.1 star rating. • Jaguatirica Cabin | Pitta Arquitetura | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Jaguatirica Cabin, designed by Pitta Arquitetura and completed in 2021, is a minimalist and sustainable 65-square-meter retreat located in the Atlantic Forest of Ubatuba, Brazil. Situated within a vast forest reserve, the cabin was conceived as a "cocoon" to allow guests a serene and intimate connection with the lush, biodiverse natural surroundings. The design is a testament to low-impact construction, blending architectural form with the untouched landscape. To minimize its environmental footprint, the project utilized a lightweight, dry construction system that allowed for rapid assembly and produced very little material waste. The structure features a metal frame with wood-frame panels and a waterproof thermoplastic cover, all chosen to respect the natural topography of the site. Natural materials like wood, glass, and exposed concrete were selected to create a welcoming atmosphere that integrates seamlessly with the forest setting. The cabin's elevated position further reduces its impact on the ground. The cabin’s architecture is defined by its focus on natural light and expansive views of the forest. Large openings and sliding glass doors on the main facade invite the surrounding nature inside, creating an immersive, well-ventilated living space. A prominent 2.5-meter eave extends from the roof, providing shade from the sun and shelter from rain while still allowing ample natural light to enter. The interior is organized as a single, open-plan space that integrates the living room, bedroom, and kitchen without partitions, which enhances the feeling of spaciousness and reinforces the connection to the outdoors. • Half-Tree House | Jacobschang Architecture | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Half-Tree House, designed by Jacobschang Architecture, is a 360-square-foot, off-grid cabin located on a remote, 60-acre property in a second-growth forest in Sullivan County, upstate New York. Built on a budget of just $20,000, the residence was constructed entirely by its owners and a team of friends in the "New England barn-raising" spirit. The house features a design that minimizes its impact on the steep, wooded site, creating the illusion that it floats among the trees. To achieve this "floating" effect, the structure uses a hybrid anchoring system. The upslope side of the cabin is supported by standard concrete footings, while the other side is suspended from two existing trees using a specialized treehouse fastener system called Garnier Limbs. This approach not only saved money by avoiding expensive foundations and retaining walls but also minimized site disturbance. The aesthetic of the Half-Tree House is characterized by a strong contrast between its exterior and interior. The exterior is clad with timber milled from Eastern Pines that were felled on the property. This wood was then treated with traditional Scandinavian pine tar, giving the cabin a dark, weather-resistant facade that blends into the forest. Inside, the walls and ceiling are painted white, and the floor is sealed with a clear, matte coat, creating a bright and minimalist space. The single-room interior is flooded with natural light and air via three large, 8-by-8-foot steel-tube pivot doors that also feature dual-insulated glass. For the colder New York winters, the space is heated by an efficient Jotul wood stove. The cabin has no piped water or electricity, with power coming from a portable generator if needed, reinforcing its identity as a remote and self-reliant getaway. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Nisser Micro Cabin is a 26-square-meter residential prototype designed by Feste Landskap / Arkitektur and completed in 2017. It is located in Nissedal, a municipality in the Telemark region of Norway, on the banks of Lake Nisser. Commissioned by Smarte Hytter AS, a local cabin developer, the project was intended as a sustainable and compact alternative to the trend of large, luxurious holiday homes that are common in Norway. The architects' ultimate goal is to develop a floating version of the cabin, but due to local planning restrictions on Lake Nisser, the prototype was built on stilts on the shore. The design of the cabin maximizes the user's connection to the surrounding landscape. A large, glazed facade between the main living area and a covered terrace blurs the line between indoor and outdoor space, creating a seamless link to the lake and landscape. The exterior is clad in thermally treated pinewood, a sustainable and chemical-free material that gives the cabin a natural, integrated feel within its environment. This exterior cladding also has integrated gutters and downpipes, which creates clean, expressive facades. The compact, 26-square-meter floor plan includes a small mezzanine loft for sleeping, with a total capacity to accommodate up to seven people. The module is connected to electricity, water, and sewage via a flexible pipe that enters from beneath, a system designed to be compatible with a future floating version. • Mulla Mulla (Pod[e]) | A-HA Design Studio | ZHIG

OFF-GRID ACCOMMODATION | Cabin | The Pod[e] Mulla Mulla is a luxurious, off-grid holiday cabin designed by A-HA Design Studio in collaboration with Scott Taylor, co-founder of the Pod[e] brand. Located on 300 acres of coastal bushland on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, the prototype combines high-end comfort with eco-conscious features to minimize its environmental footprint. The design process was deeply rooted in the site's unique characteristics. The design team camped on the coastal bushland to understand the site's essence, topography, prevailing winds, vistas, and soundscapes. The cabin's bold and distinct exterior changes color throughout the day with the shifting rhythms of the light. It features prismatic and champagne-colored panels, along with a mirrored skirt, which creates a captivating visual effect. Material palette: The interior and exterior material choices reference the native flora of the region, the Ironstone Mulla Mulla, a compact native plant with light, feathery blooms endemic to the Eyre Peninsula. The interior features a palette of soft pinks, natural timber, and brushed stainless steel. Dimensions: The cabin has a modest footprint, measuring 12 by 5 meters, with an additional 50 square meters of decking. Open and connected interior: Despite its small size, the design aims to maximize a sense of openness and connection to the landscape. Sustainability The cabin is self-sufficient and operates entirely off-grid. It is powered by solar panels. It is equipped with a rainwater catchment and filtration system. The design uses natural ventilation and strategically placed windows and doors to create a comfortable internal climate. • Elsewhere Cabin A | Sean O'Neil | ZHIG

HOSPITALITY | Cabin | Elsewhere Cabin A is a 160-square-foot, off-grid prototype designed in 2018 by Seattle-based architect Sean O’Neill for Elsewhere, a vacation rental company near Georgetown, Texas. The tiny cabin was built on a trailer base to allow for off-grid functionality and occasional relocation. Its design was inspired by the traditional Texas porch, aiming to create a serene space for guests to disconnect from city life. This is achieved with a ten-foot folding glass wall that opens the entire living space, creating a large, open-air porch. The exterior is clad in charred cedar siding, a technique known as shou sugi ban, giving it a minimalist black finish that helps it blend into the natural surroundings. The interior features Chilean pine plywood for the walls, ceiling, and flooring, complemented by custom-made, space-efficient, and multi-functional furniture. A single surface can transition from a desk to a sofa to a kitchen counter. The sleeping loft is nestled beneath the pitched roof, while a small kitchen and a bathroom with a waterless toilet are also incorporated. For off-grid utilities, the cabin relies on solar panels for electricity and an onboard water tank for the shower and sink. Much of the exterior work and some furnishings were built by the client. • Andvik | Mer Architects | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | Designed by Helsinki-based Mer Arkkitehdit, the Andvik project is a modern villa thoughtfully integrated into the rugged, rocky terrain of Hanko, a historic Finnish seaside town. Surrounded by pine forests, the residence is a contemporary interpretation of coastal living, respecting both the landscape and the area's architectural heritage. The house features a bi-level structure, with its lower level partially submerged into the bedrock, a technique that minimizes the visual impact of the building and anchors it firmly to the cliffside. The main living floor sits perched on the cliff top, offering expansive and direct views of the Baltic Sea. This elevated position allows the house to feel protected yet completely connected to the dramatic coastal environment. The exterior is clad in spruce and painted with traditional linseed-oil paint, a nod to the 19th-century buildings characteristic of the region. This choice of material and finish helps the villa blend into its surroundings and weathers gracefully over time. Inside, the design creates a strong visual link between the interior and the rugged, natural surroundings. Large glass walls frame the dramatic landscape, bringing the sea and forest views directly into the living spaces. The interior palette is a mix of white and wood, complemented by unique details that reference the natural world. For instance, leaf-green floor tiles at the entrance mirror the surrounding pine forests, while rocks from the site itself are incorporated into both the interior and exterior. The living, dining, and kitchen areas feature retro-style furniture, adding a touch of character and warmth to the contemporary shell. A flat roof over the submerged lower level is topped with a wooden deck and balustrades, creating a large, sheltered terrace accessible from the main living area. Above the upper floor, a gabled, zinc-covered roof provides robust protection against the area's often harsh wind and sea spray. • LILELO (Little Leisure Lodge) | Atelier LAVIT | ZHIG

HOTEL | Prefabricated Cabin | LILELO, or Little Leisure Lodge, is an eco-hotel in Grazzano Badoglio, Italy, conceived by the Paris-based architecture practice Atelier LAVIT and completed in 2022. Located in the heart of Monferrato, a region known for its vineyards and woodland hills, the hotel consists of a cluster of four modular, eco-friendly cabins. The design is inspired by traditional haystacks, blending naturally with the rural landscape. The project was designed with a strong focus on sustainability and a minimal footprint. The cabins were largely prefabricated off-site, reducing construction time and on-site disruption. To adapt to the sloping terrain, the cabins are raised off the ground on slender pillars, minimizing their impact on the environment. The cabins feature a distinctive A-shaped roof with fully glazed triangular elevations, which also function as the load-bearing structure. This creates a strong visual identity while maximizing natural light and views. The cabins are constructed primarily from natural and eco-compatible materials. The exterior is clad in oil-treated larch, a material chosen for its durability and aging characteristics. The interior also features wood finishes throughout. The LILELO hotel comprises four cabins, each serving a specific function. Private suites: Three of the cabins are private guest suites, each with a continuous, open-plan interior. A deck at one end provides outdoor seating, leading to a sleeping area and a bathroom at the opposite end. Only the toilet is enclosed. Communal cabin: The fourth cabin serves as a common space. It features a large kitchen and a generous outdoor area with a table, intended as a gathering place for guests. The continuous interior layout and expansive windows create a seamless connection between the indoor spaces and the natural surroundings. The interior and furnishings are crafted from wood, creating a warm and cozy atmosphere that complements the cabins' natural setting. Located in a spectacular landscape on the eastern plain of Corsica, France, the cabin was conceived to allow for full immersion in nature while maintaining comfort and protection. The name O_CASELLA is a play on the word "casella," which means "little box" or "shelter" in Corsican, reflecting the cabin's functional and minimalist nature. The design of O_CASELLA is based on two distinct, yet connected, modular volumes: a living module and a pergola. This structure addresses the demands of the warm Mediterranean climate by creating large, shaded areas for outdoor living. To minimize cost and environmental impact on the remote site, the entire cabin was prefabricated in a wood workshop. The modules were then transported fully assembled to the location, significantly reducing on-site construction time and disruption. The closed living module contains the kitchen, bathroom, and a flexible living/sleeping area. It provides framed views of the surrounding wild Corsican mountains and sea through large windows. The open-air pergola provides a ventilated and shaded space for outdoor relaxation, reading, or contemplating the landscape. A movable, mashrabiya-style shutter on a rail system allows occupants to regulate sunlight and air flow. The exterior structure and cladding are made from local Corsican larch (laricciu), a lightweight yet strong wood that contributes to the cabin's portability and durability. The interior walls and ceiling are lined with MDF wood, creating a cozy and protective atmosphere. A generous covered pergola extends the living space outdoors, with an outdoor shower providing an even more direct connection to nature. A steel beam on the façade serves a dual purpose: it hides the rail system for the sliding shutter panel and acts as a gutter for collecting rainwater. The movable mashrabiya panel offers passive cooling and sun protection. The modular system allows for flexibility in installation and configuration, showcasing a forward-thinking approach to sustainable architecture. • Anfa Place | Foster + Partners | ZHIG

URBAN | Mixed-use development | Anfa Place is a mixed-use development on the Atlantic coast to the west of Casablanca, close to the city’s affluent residential district of Anfa. The design takes advantage of the site’s magnificent natural setting – the 90,000-square-metre scheme extends the city to the shoreline by creating a new waterfront quarter, with places to live, offices, shops, cafes, leisure facilities and a five-star hotel. The spaces are carved into the cliff-side beneath the existing corniche, drawing the city towards the sea with a series of stepped terraces. An elevated promenade leads to a plaza with cafes, restaurants and bars and breaks down the barrier that previously existed between the road and the beach. Pedestrians access the apartments at roof-level, via gardens and bridges, and discreet ramps lead cars to underground parking. The buildings then extend along the corniche: there is a hotel, swimming pool, courtyard and spa facilities at the north eastern tip, and offices and a ‘business club’ – comprising shared conference facilities and office space, a pool and serviced apartments – towards the south west of the site. The centre of the development is arranged as seven ‘fingers’ containing 260 private apartments. These extend towards the ocean and are staggered to allow even those furthest from the beach to have sea views. Using local materials and construction techniques, the design responds to the architectural vernacular. The buildings are interspersed with private courtyards and trees, offering natural shade, while protecting against the strong sea breezes. The facades are designed to promote natural ventilation, control solar gain and exploit the cooling properties of thermal mass and, for privacy, the hotel balconies are shaded by delicate filigree screens. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/9756fd_2788b583a03d4342ba62e0c0783a82c8~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_2000,h_1124,al_c,q_90/Anfa%20Place%20(1).jfif 1/0 Private Public Pin Pin 0 x Appreciators 0 3D models Product 5.2K Views 0 Appreciated Appreciate Please login to appreciate Anfa Place 20000 Boulevard de la Corniche, Casablanca, Morocco fosterandpartners.com Source: Published on Oct 1, 2023 by: Civil Engineer Rosa Garcia Premium Member More Buildings from Morocco Facts: Up Up Architecture Office Foster + Partners United Kingdom Category: URBAN Mixed-use development Project Type: Post Type: Building Country: Morocco Photographers: Architects: Foster + Partners Area: 140,000 m2 Year: 2014 City: Casablanca Construction: Client Inveravante Description: the architects Text description by Anfa Place is a mixed-use development on the Atlantic coast to the west of Casablanca, close to the city’s affluent residential district of Anfa.
