Situated in a protected forest near Aarhus, Denmark, the cabin is a contemporary interpretation of the classic woodland cabin, designed to harmonize with its natural surroundings. It was built on the existing plinth of a previous summer house, adhering to the area's strict building regulations. The client, a writer, sought an inspirational workspace that offered a close connection to nature, rather than a traditional holiday home. This focus on work over residence is reflected in the layout, which dedicates most of the space to a large, flexible living and studio area, with only a small sleeping loft and bathroom. The design emphasizes the transition between inside and out. Large, sliding glass doors allow the interior to extend onto an outdoor terrace, a feature that allows the writer to work in direct connection with the forest. The exterior is clad in a dark, reddish-brown copper, chosen to blend with the trunks of the surrounding beech trees and a nearby lake. This copper façade will naturally patinate over time, gradually turning green to further integrate the structure into the landscape. Inside, the material palette is warm and natural. The flooring, a mottled aggregate concrete, mimics the forest floor and extends out onto the terrace to blur the line between interior and exterior spaces. The interior is dominated by Douglas fir wood from Danish manufacturer Dinesen, used for the ceilings, built-in furniture, kitchen, staircase, and the home's walls, which are also lined with bookcases. In a splash of vibrant color, the fireplace is painted in a deep, electric blue. The project also features sustainable measures, including geothermal heating and an efficient use of materials, where leftover wood planks were used for additional furnishings. The project is situated within a forest just outside the city, overlooking the Simpson River and the Mackay hill. Its architecture is rooted in the traditional constructions of Southern Chile, which are adapted to withstand the region's harsh climate of frequent snow, rain, and cold. The house was designed with a pure, simple volume and built with local materials to accommodate a tight budget and limited local labor and technology. To protect the structure from ground moisture and cold, the house is elevated on wooden piles. Its exterior is sheathed in black zinc sheets, providing a hermetic shield against the arduous weather. In contrast, the interior is clad entirely in grooved pine plywood, creating a warm, cozy, and rustic atmosphere. The house is strategically designed to maximize its connection with the surrounding nature. It is more enclosed toward the access, but the side facing the views opens up completely through large windows that lead to a generous wooden deck. The main floor features an open living space that includes the main living room, an open kitchen, six built-in bunk beds, a guest bathroom, and a suite. A second level offers a wide open floor plan with a balcony overlooking the scenery. A staircase also doubles as an interior resting space and provides access to the terrace. Architecture Office | Haysom Ward Miller Architects is a Cambridge based RIBA Award winning practice. Our work includes a wide range of projects from private one-off houses, to housing developments, educational, ecclesiastic and other building types. HWM do not promote a singular architectural style or brand. Instead we seek to develop an architectural language which is strongly rooted in the surrounding context. We aim to design buildings and spaces which are responsive, dynamic and integrated. Our concern is not principally with the designed object as much as how that object informs and influences the surrounding environment. The design process is one of translation and interpretation, which begins with a mapping and reading of the surrounding context and ends with a built form which we hope will enhance and reinforce pre-existing positive aspects of its surroundings whilst healing the negatives. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/9756fd_75cd45b38151433f8b406b1f84a98443~mv2.png/v1/fill/w_269,h_67,al_c/haysomwardmiller.co.uk.png PDFs & Articles Globe Our Gallery Globe Our Store Globe About Globe Projects & Articles Globe Pinterest Instagram YouTube Globe Haysom Ward Miller United Kingdom Small Title Since Architecture Office ---- 1 Project 1.3K Views 0 Appreciate Appreciated Info. Located on the foothills of the Cayambe volcano, the design for this small dwelling was conceived as a way for the owner to participate directly in its construction, honoring a deep-seated desire to build with his own hands and strengthen his familial connection to the land. This approach was a direct response to the remote site's lack of electricity and logistical challenges that would have made transporting a fully assembled structure impossible. The house was entirely prefabricated as a series of ready-to-assemble panels, allowing the owner and his father to put it together using only basic cordless power tools like drills and screwdrivers, with an accompanying assembly manual. The design strategy carefully considers the local environment, with a low, blind façade oriented against the dominant winds and the main road, which contains the house's service areas. In contrast, the lateral façades open up generously to the landscape, with one framing a view of the valley and the other facing a reservoir and the volcano. The fourth facade, which faces the interior of the property, is opened only at the top to provide natural light without compromising privacy and houses built-in features like the kitchen, a library, and a storage cellar. Completed in 2020, the cabin is part of a larger, ecologically sensitive tourism project that will eventually feature up to 50 unique dwelling units, as well as a sauna and conference center. The design is a modern interpretation of the traditional niliaitta, an elevated wooden hut historically used by the indigenous Sámi people to store food and other items away from bears and other wild animals. Niliaitta was conceived as a secluded, ""bear-cache"" for humans, providing a retreat from the chaos of modern life. The cabin is elevated on a single, slender concrete-filled steel column, which minimizes its footprint and allows the forest floor to remain undisturbed. The exterior is clad in black-toned pine, allowing the structure to blend with the surrounding trees, while the interior is lined with warm, light-toned wood. The 30-square-meter cabin features a minimalist and cozy interior, with all utility spaces—including a kitchenette, spacious shower, and building systems—cleverly contained within a central core. The central core design allows the living space to remain open and uncluttered, drawing attention to a full-height window that frames views of the surrounding nature. The interior also features wood surfaces and eco-wool insulation, with plastic avoided in the structure. A linear staircase provides access to the elevated cabin, creating a transition from the wild outdoors to a secure and tranquil retreat. Architecture Office | Smiljan Radić is an internationally recognized Chilean architect of Croatian descent known for his evocative and sculptural designs that blur the lines between architecture and art. Based in Santiago, he works in close collaboration with his wife, sculptor Marcela Correa, to create unique projects that explore the sensory and social conditions of materials. Radić often focuses on smaller-scale projects like experimental structures, installations, and residential buildings, but he has also undertaken larger commissions, including the 2014 Serpentine Pavilion in London, the VIK Winery in Chile, and the renovation of the Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art. His work often challenges traditional architectural norms, using a "pretty ugliness" approach to produce bold and unexpected forms. Radić does not maintain a website, adding to his reputation as a "hermetic" artist. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/9756fd_6a4dfe48a09843a8a8cce04f7d744657~mv2.png/v1/fill/w_1000,h_1001,al_c/Smiljan%20Radi%C4%87-zhiig.png PDFs & Articles Globe Our Gallery Globe Our Store Globe About Globe Projects & Articles Globe Pinterest Instagram YouTube Globe Smiljan Radić Chile Small Title 1995 Since Architecture Office ---- 1 Project 725 Views 0 Appreciate Appreciated Info. The project is a conscious ""exercise in repetition and replication,"" where Radić pays homage to two previous designs: Japanese architect Kazuo Shinohara's 1974 Prism House and his own 1997 Room built on the island of Chiloé. The off-grid, prefab cabin is composed of two distinct black volumes placed on a massive elevated timber deck, which offers views of the forest and a nearby solidified river of lava from a past volcanic eruption. Getting to the remote location required the building materials to be brought in via plane flights and car rides through rustic towns. The two structures of Casa Prisma each mirror one of the referenced designs. The first volume, known as the Room, features a gabled roof and was inspired by Radić's earlier work. The second, the Prism House, has a mono-pitched roof and replicates the isosceles triangle geometry of Shinohara's original design, including the interior's distinctive diagonal post. The exterior of both volumes is clad in black metal panels, with extensive glazing that allows light to pour into the spaces and frame panoramic views of the surrounding wilderness. The interior contains open-plan living and dining areas, with dorm-style bedrooms located in the upper A-frame section of one structure. Inside, red accent colors can be found on textiles and kitchenware, reminiscent of Radić's Room project. The home is designed for off-grid living, with solar panels and a battery bank providing power, and a wood-burning stove for heat. Smiljan Radić is an internationally recognized Chilean architect of Croatian descent known for his evocative and sculptural designs that blur the lines between architecture and art. Situated within a vast forest reserve, the cabin was conceived as a ""cocoon"" to allow guests a serene and intimate connection with the lush, biodiverse natural surroundings. The design is a testament to low-impact construction, blending architectural form with the untouched landscape. To minimize its environmental footprint, the project utilized a lightweight, dry construction system that allowed for rapid assembly and produced very little material waste. The structure features a metal frame with wood-frame panels and a waterproof thermoplastic cover, all chosen to respect the natural topography of the site. Natural materials like wood, glass, and exposed concrete were selected to create a welcoming atmosphere that integrates seamlessly with the forest setting. The cabin's elevated position further reduces its impact on the ground. The cabin’s architecture is defined by its focus on natural light and expansive views of the forest. Large openings and sliding glass doors on the main facade invite the surrounding nature inside, creating an immersive, well-ventilated living space. A prominent 2.5-meter eave extends from the roof, providing shade from the sun and shelter from rain while still allowing ample natural light to enter. The interior is organized as a single, open-plan space that integrates the living room, bedroom, and kitchen without partitions, which enhances the feeling of spaciousness and reinforces the connection to the outdoors.
