RETREATS | Cabin | Constructed in 2014 by Chilean studio DRAA (del Rio Arquitectos Asociados) for a budget of just $15,000, the Charred Cabin is a 15-square-meter weekend retreat located on a historic mountain road in Olmué, Chile. Situated on a steep hillside, the cabin is elevated on stilts to maximize views of the surrounding coastal mountains and historic landscape. Its design was influenced by the site's unique history and melancholy atmosphere, serving as a minimalist mountain hideout for an academic couple. The exterior cladding is made from inexpensive pine planks that have been traditionally charred on-site. This natural, chemical-free process protects the wood from decay, rot, and insects, while also creating a distinct black aesthetic that helps the structure blend into the rugged terrain. The cabin is built from prefabricated structural insulated panels (SIPs), which helped keep costs down and allowed for quick, efficient assembly by a small team. The interior of the cabin is defined by its simplicity and warmth. Plywood panels line the walls, concealing pipes and electrical wiring while providing a cozy finish that contrasts with the exterior. The main living area features a high ceiling that amplifies the sense of space. A black steel ladder provides access to a mezzanine sleeping loft above the kitchenette and wet bath. Clerestory windows in the loft frame panoramic views of the mountains, while a large window in the living area focuses on the valley below. - Kanata Cabin | Atelier l'Abri | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Kanata Cabin is a minimalist and pet-friendly rental retreat designed by Atelier l'Abri, located in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec. Commissioned by a client seeking a cozy, nature-immersed escape for themselves and their dog, the project blends functionality with an ultra-compact footprint. Affectionately dubbed "La Niche" (The Nook or Kennel) by its owners, the cabin's design features elements that evoke the image of a doghouse, such as its simple, gabled shape and arched doorway. Completed in 2024, the 60-square-meter (650-square-foot) cabin is distinguished by its understated elegance and minimalist design. It is part of the larger Kanata Tremblant estate, offering visitors a unique experience within a 3,000-acre wilderness area. An arched doorway frames views of the Boreal forest, while a high cathedral ceiling and natural light create a sense of spaciousness within the modest interior. The exterior is clad in horizontal wood slabs, which will weather to a silver tone over time, allowing the cabin to blend seamlessly with the surrounding deciduous forest. The use of 2x8 stud walls and bio-sourced cellulose fiber insulation also contributes to its energy efficiency and reduced carbon footprint. The design includes a screened porch, an efficient kitchen and living area, and an exterior hot tub, offering comfortable amenities for guests and their pets. The interior layout of the single-bedroom cottage is hyper-optimized for function and comfort. The open-plan living and kitchen area features an integrated arched nook within the kitchen cabinetry, providing a cozy space for both people and pets. Despite its size, the cabin feels airy and open thanks to the cathedral ceiling and strategic use of light. Refined interior details and custom furniture modules were included to maximize space while ensuring a refined experience. Designed by Montreal-based architecture firm Atelier l'Abri and completed in 2022, the project consists of several minimalist cabins and communal structures spread across a rugged landscape. The core philosophy behind the design was to create a harmonious balance between nature and architecture, promoting a low-impact, intimate, and immersive experience for guests. The cabins at Territoire Charlevoix are a product of Atelier l'Abri's ongoing reflection on "our relationship with the territory and how to inhabit it". The five small, autonomous shelters offer comfortable immersion in nature, both in summer and winter. Their orientation and carefully chosen locations provide privacy and generous views of the natural surroundings. The cabins are elevated on slender legs, a design choice that minimizes their impact on the ground and avoids the need for heavy machinery for traditional foundations. This preserves the forest environment and limits deforestation. The design balances rusticity with modernity, using limited and efficient materials to create warm, functional spaces that encourage a slower pace of life. The Territoire Charlevoix project extends beyond just the sleeping cabins. The site also includes modules for communal areas, such as viewing platforms, shared kitchens, and a visitor center with a forest buvette. The facility operates year-round, allowing visitors to experience the region's diverse landscapes and activities throughout the seasons. This off-grid, A-frame-inspired cabin offers a unique and minimalist nature immersion for two to four guests. The project was completed in 2019. The design reinterprets the classic A-frame cabin, popular in North America since the 1950s, with a modern, minimalist aesthetic. The iconic triangular shape creates a simple, sculptural structure while offering a functional and nature-oriented space. The off-grid shelter was built on-site by Atelier l'Abri's construction team, demonstrating a commitment to hands-on, site-specific design. The structure is clad in natural cedar board and batten, which will weather over time to a silvery hue, helping it blend into the forest. A covered terrace expands the living space, creating an ideal spot to enjoy the outdoors even when the weather is less favorable. The long roof is clad in steel, a nod to timeless, rural buildings. The minimalist and efficient interior makes clever use of space and maximizes natural light. Large bay windows offer uninterrupted views of the forest and the reservoir below, flooding the interior with light. An inclined ladder leads to a lofted bed area, which is suspended from the cathedral ceiling by steel rods, creating a focal point in the space. The ground floor includes a kitchenette and a dining table that can be converted into an additional bed, accommodating up to four people. A wood-burning stove provides warmth during the frosty Canadian winters, enhancing the cozy cabin atmosphere. - Villa Løken | Oslotre | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | House | Nestled on the car-free island of Brønnøya in the Oslofjord, Villa Løken by Oslotre is a modern, maritime-inspired residence built for a professional sailor and his family. The project is a testament to sustainable timber architecture, showcasing how a high degree of prefabrication and manual labor can be used to construct a compact, yet bright and generous home under difficult logistical conditions. The design is a celebration of wood, reflecting both the surrounding nature and the owner's connection to wooden boats. The exterior is clad in reclaimed Brazilian cumaru wood from a 1950s Danish boat workshop, giving the villa a rich, recycled history. Inside, the home features a light and warm aesthetic with untreated aspen and oak panels, while the structural timber frame is left visible throughout. The house was built as a pure timber construction, utilizing precut timber elements and wood fiber insulation to minimize its environmental impact. The design is open in all directions, with large windows bringing in light, views, and a sense of connection to the surrounding nature and the water. This approach maximizes the perception of space despite the home's compact footprint. - Summer Houses in Slavik | Mats Fahlander | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Summer House | The two summer houses in Slavik, designed by Mats Fahlander Arkitekt and completed around 2012, are located on a property between two fjords on the northern West Coast of Sweden. The area is part of a national park, characterized by rounded, wind-worn granite rocks and leaning trees. As part of a larger family compound with other houses dating back to the 1950s, the new additions were built for one of the sons and his family and a smaller house for his parents, who have summered in the area for generations. The designs draw inspiration from the rugged landscape and the contrast between the tough climate and the relaxed atmosphere of a summer retreat. Both houses are raised on stilts, leaving the ground and rocks underneath untouched, creating a sense of floating above the terrain. Outdoor bridges and platforms, suspended from the facade, extend the living space around the houses. The simple, timber-framed structures are covered in a maintenance-free mineral facade in a shade of gray similar to the rocks, while the rounded, barrel-vaulted roofs echo the shape of the weathered surroundings. The main house features a simple floor plan, with a large, open living room and kitchen area facing the ocean and a more private rear section containing bedrooms and the entrance. Large sliding glass doors in the main living space allow for an open connection to the outdoors, seamlessly blending interior and exterior spaces. Inside, the walls are paneled with untreated fir, creating a warm, natural aesthetic. In the evening, the low western sun catches the interior fir, making the house appear as a "glowing eye-catcher" from the sea. - Panorama House | Andrew Goodwin Designs | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | House | The Panorama House is a contemporary vacation home designed by Andrew Goodwin Designs for a five-acre property in Yucca Valley, California. Created as a retreat from the fast-paced life of Southern California, the 1,535-square-foot residence features a striking folded roof that creates a dynamic form and captures a 360-degree view of the surrounding desert landscape. The house was built with sustainability in mind, using a light-gauge metal building system to lift the structure off the desert floor. This approach minimizes the building's impact on the delicate desert environment. The simple, monochrome palette of materials allows the desert scenery to be the focal point. The distinctive folding roof design adds visual interest and creates a variation in the angles and lighting throughout the house. Over 1,100 square feet of partially covered deck space extends the living area outdoors. The 1,535-square-foot interior includes two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living area, kitchen, and laundry room. The home's design and furnishings, which included contributions from designer Julie Park, maintain a desert-modern aesthetic with contemporary colors and textures. Outdoor living: An integrated outdoor fireplace and wood storage are built into the facade, making the exterior decks functional for year-round use. A detached 600-square-foot carport provides shelter for vehicles. Awards and recognition In 2024, the Panorama House was recognized with an Award of Merit at the AIA CCC Design Awards. The award highlights the project's contemporary design and its successful integration into the secluded desert environment. - Cabin MM01 | Christian Tonko | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Designed by Austrian architect Christian Tonko and completed in 2022, Cabin MM01 is a modular and minimalist vacation home in the rural, alpine landscape of Carinthia, Austria. The 25-square-meter cabin, which is complemented by an equal-sized terrace, was created as a base for a couple to enjoy outdoor activities. The project is a testament to sustainable and flexible design, with a structure that is both easily transportable and leaves no lasting trace on its site. The cabin is a study in efficient and elegant micro-architecture, based on the standard dimensions and frames of shipping containers. Its name, "MM01," is a tribute to Malcolm McLean, the inventor of the modern shipping container. This design approach allows the cabin to be transported easily by a standard truck and installed on-site using removable screw foundations. When the cabin is relocated, the site can be fully restored to its original state. The compact 25-square-meter internal space is efficiently divided into four equally sized zones: a bedroom, a living/workspace, a kitchen, and a bathroom. An equally sized, covered terrace extends the living area outdoors, providing a shaded space to enjoy the surrounding forest. The terrace is oriented to the north for optimal shading and privacy. Expansive glazing lines the front of the cabin, connecting the interior with the outdoors and making the space feel larger than its physical footprint. The MM01 cabin combines high-quality, durable materials with clever space-saving techniques. While inspired by shipping containers, the cabin is built from specially constructed metal frames and highly insulated panels for superior thermal performance compared to typical metal containers. Despite its small size, the cabin features modern conveniences, including a full kitchen with a dishwasher and a washing machine. A desk with a foldaway screen can be pulled out from under the bed, transforming the area into an office when needed. Project credits Architect: Christian Tonko. - Buenos Aires Ciudad Casa de Gobierno | Foster + Partners | ZHIG
COMMERCIAL | Office building | Ciudad Casa de Gobierno is a new city hall for Buenos Aires, housing offices for the Mayor and 1,500 employees. Spanning an entire city block in Parque Patricios, the new building contributes to the revitalisation of the neighbourhood and combines an environmentally efficient design with an innovative, highly flexible internal arrangement of terraced office floors. The architecture echoes the building’s park-side setting, with landscaped courtyards and shaded walkways, and uses materials that draw on the site’s industrial past to reinforce the unique character of the area. Entrance is via a soaring four-storey-high atrium. Full-height glazing fills the space with natural light and creates a visual connection with the adjacent park, and four tiers of office levels step back to create a sequence of stepped internal terraces. The office floors are connected by top-lit circulation routes and punctuated by two large landscaped patios. The workspaces are open, the majority are naturally lit and visible, helping to improve communication between departments and promote a sense of community. The generous floor plates are based on an eight-metre grid, which allows for a wide variety of layouts – the building was originally commissioned as the headquarters for Banco Ciudad, and the inherent flexibility of its design has enabled a seamless conversion into government offices. Further facilities include a café and a 300-seat wood-panelled auditorium, which can be used for local events. Designed to make a positive environmental and social impact on the city, the plans form part of a wider regeneration initiative in the barrio of Parque Patricios. Externally, the building is characterised by its flowing roof canopy, which is supported by pillars and extends in a deep overhang to shade the entrance plaza and facades. Inside, the concrete barrel vaulted roof is textured and exposed. The thermal mass of the concrete soffits, combined with chilled beams, helps to naturally regulate the temperature and keep the offices cool. Every aspect of the scheme was designed in response to the local climate, including the composition of each facade – the eastern and western elevations are shaded by a screen of louvres, which rise the full height of the building. In 2017, the building was certified LEED Gold. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/9756fd_650211df82d841388141ff05e0fee579~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_2000,h_1124,al_c,q_90/Buenos%20Aires%20Ciudad%20Casa%20de%20Gobierno%20(1).jfif 1/0 Private Public Pin Pin 0 x Appreciators 0 3D models Product 5.2K Views 0 Appreciated Appreciate Please login to appreciate Buenos Aires Ciudad Casa de Gobierno Uspallata 315O, C1437 JCK, Buenos Aires, Argentina fosterandpartners.com Source: Published on Oct 1, 2023 by: Civil Engineer Rosa Garcia Premium Member More Buildings from Argentina Facts: Up Up Architecture Office Foster + Partners United Kingdom Category: COMMERCIAL Office building Project Type: Post Type: Building Country: Argentina Photographers: Architects: Foster + Partners Area: 45,000 m2 Year: 2015 City: Buenos Aires Construction: Client CRIBA S..A. - The Cabin | JAN TYRPEKL | ZHIG
EXPERIMENTAL | Cabin | The Shelter, also referred to as "The Cabin" or "Útulna," was an experimental wooden structure designed by architect Jan Tyrpekl and built in 2017. The 12.5-square-meter cabin is situated on top of a disused World War II concrete bunker near the border of the Czech Republic and Austria. This was part of an architectural statement to repurpose the thousands of bunkers left in the landscape after they were never used for their intended purpose. By designing a light, removable wooden structure, Tyrpekl aimed to minimize the impact on the existing historical structure. The project was executed with minimal material, cost, and time. It was built with the help of friends, family, and architecture students, rather than being funded by donations or grants. Because of logistical challenges, the cabin was first assembled at a family farm 200 kilometers away, then disassembled and reassembled on the bunker. The design demonstrates that a generous interior space can be created within a very small footprint. The building features two large windows—one facing the Austrian border and the other facing a nearby village church—and an additional rooftop window, ensuring the small space is filled with natural light and scenic views. The simple wooden design was constructed using only common tools. The Shelter serves as a small retreat, and anyone can arrange to stay there with the owner's permission. In 2018, the project received a Czech Architecture Award nomination, with the jury praising its ability to make the invisible visible, its philosophical approach to marking a special place, and its simple, natural materials that achieve maximum impact with minimal means. Completed in 2023, the cabin was commissioned to provide a unique and serene retreat for relaxation, offering a deep connection with the surrounding nature, which includes an orchard and mature trees. The dwelling is perched on 4-meter-high concrete stilts, allowing the landscape to flow unimpeded beneath and creating a feeling of being in a "bird's nest," which offers a sense of security and intimacy. The structure is built from sustainable materials, featuring a frame of glued laminated spruce timbers and a platform and roof of cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels. The lower part of the structure and the terrace are made from glued laminated larch timbers. The most prominent feature of the design is the extensive use of glass walls, which enclose the entire living space to provide uninterrupted, 360-degree views of the natural surroundings. For privacy, interior curtains can be drawn. The open-plan interior is designed for simplicity and comfort. It includes a built-in bed, a connected bar/kitchenette, and a suspended fireplace that creates a cozy, warm atmosphere. The space is divided into distinct zones for sleeping, sitting, and conversing. Large HS portals—sliding doors—provide access to a spacious terrace overlooking the farm's orchard. While the current cabin lacks a bathroom and cooking facilities, plans are in place for a future expansion that will add a sauna, shower, and toilet in the space between the supporting pillars beneath the house. Completed in 2022, the project is a sustainable and resourceful endeavor, built almost entirely from locally sourced, recycled, and donated materials from previous constructions. The building process was a collaborative effort involving friends and family, reflecting a "labor of love" approach. The structure is divided into three distinct parts, creating a harmonious balance between work and relaxation: a small studio with basic sanitary facilities, a sauna with an adjacent beekeeping workshop, and an open terrace that connects the two volumes. The design is based on a simple, gabled-roof massing, with strategically placed north-facing windows to prevent overheating during the summer while maximizing natural light. Storage niches for firewood are integrated into the facades, which aids in insulation during colder months. The building is heated by wood-burning stoves in both the studio and the sauna. The Atelier's foundation consists of concrete footings that support an admitted timber frame, which carries individual insulated timber panels. Its design is intended to engage with the surrounding landscape, offering expansive views of the valley and nearby forest, and providing a flexible space for various activities, including work, relaxation, family gatherings, or accommodating guests. CULTURAL | Science museum | Construction has been completed on the Binhai Science Museum (formerly The Modern City and Industrial Exploratorium of Tianjin Binhai New Area Culture Center), a 33,000-square-meter (355,200-square-foot) museum structure in Tianjin, China. Designed in 2013-2014, the Binhai Science Museum is set to open in Fall 2019. The institution will showcase artifacts from Tianjin’s industrial past through large-scale contemporary technology, including spectacular rockets for space research. The project is part of the city’s Binhai Cultural Center and contains facilities for cultural events and exhibitions as well as galleries, offices, and restaurant and retail spaces. Bernard Tschumi Architects designed the Binhai Science Museum to relate to the rich industrial history of the area, the site of high-volume manufacturing and research. A series of large-scale cones creates major rooms throughout the museum. The central cone, lit from above, connects all three levels of the building. A spiralling ramp ascends to the top level, offering an unusual spatial experience of the modern vertical city by reinterpreting an ancient industrial typology. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Lookout Cabin, designed by Dana McCarter Architecture, is a small, two-story guest house located on Bruny Island off the coast of Tasmania, Australia. Situated on a grassy paddock, the cabin is designed to blend quietly into the island's unique coastal landscape while offering dramatic, uninterrupted views of the Tasman Sea. The cabin is designed for both immersion in nature and quiet refuge from the elements. The layout emphasizes a strong connection between the interior and the rugged, natural environment. With its materials chosen to weather and age gracefully, the cabin reinforces a sense of permanence and belonging within the Tasmanian landscape. The Lookout is situated on Lunawuni/Bruny Island, a location known for its windswept coastal beauty. This specific site allows the cabin to feel secluded while maximizing the spectacular ocean views. The exterior cladding is made from materials chosen for their resilience against the harsh coastal climate and their ability to age beautifully over time, helping the cabin to settle into the landscape. The interior palette is warm and durable, balancing exposed concrete elements with recycled local timbers for a tactile feel. The cabin spans two levels, ensuring that both the living and sleeping areas have expansive, uninterrupted ocean views. Oversized glass sliding doors open directly onto the rugged landscape, blurring the line between inside and out and heightening the connection to the sea. Despite its small size, the space was designed to be comfortable and functional for guest accommodation. The low-impact design of the structure allows for a unique, intimate experience of the native wildlife and vegetation. - Black Aurora Nook | Atelier Dirnbacher | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Black Aurora Nook is a contemporary holiday cabin situated in the remote and rugged landscape of the Lofoten archipelago in northern Norway. Designed by Austrian architect Elisabeth Dirnbacher of Atelier Dirnbacher and completed in 2022, the 65 m² retreat offers a striking contrast of robust exteriors against a cozy and warm interior. Nestled between the vast Austnesfjord and the imposing Higravstinden, the cabin is a destination for families, couples, and nature lovers seeking to immerse themselves in the dramatic arctic scenery. The architecture is defined by a simple, cubature form that plays with the dimensions of the surrounding environment. Architect Elisabeth Dirnbacher was inspired by a summer trip to the region and aimed to create a unique holiday house that would complement the astonishing beauty of the islands. The black-stained, timber-framed cabin is designed to blend into the dark, mountainous landscape, while its interior opens up to provide a luxurious and immersive experience of nature. The interior of the Black Aurora Nook is a showcase of handcrafted woodwork and clever spatial design. The cabin is divided into two rectangular areas, but features varied ceiling heights ranging from two to five and a half meters, creating an exciting spatial experience. The main living space includes an open kitchen and a cozy sitting area with a wood-burning stove. Large, floor-to-ceiling windows provide a widescreen view of the fjord, the open sea, and the mountain. A staircase from the master bedroom leads to a gallery with a window bench, perfect for observing the northern lights or sea eagles. A second sleeping gallery for children is accessible by a ladder. Untreated wood, handcrafted by a local carpenter, is used throughout the cabin for wall paneling, built-in furniture, and a three-meter-high sliding door that can separate the dining room and master bedroom. The cabin was designed as a high-performance timber-framed construction with sustainability in mind. Comfort in the cold: Despite the harsh northern climate, the cabin is kept comfortable with a wood-burning stove and underfloor heating in the sleeping areas. The minimalist design, coupled with the natural weathering of the timber, helps the cabin settle naturally into its remote surroundings. We share our name with a beautiful, remote, and historically important mountain in central Norway. Snøhetta is a place nobody is from, but anyone can experience. Creating places for societies to connect with each other and with the world around them is a primary motivation in our work. Dialogue and diversity empower this approach. Snøhetta first significant commission was in 1989 for Bibliotheca Alexandrina, reviving the ancient library in Alexandria, Egypt. This was followed by commissions for the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in Oslo and the National September 11 Memorial Museum Pavilion at the World Trade Center in New York City. Since those early projects, many other internationally acclaimed works have been realized around the globe. source: snohetta.com Category Cultural Center Post Type Building Project Type PUBLIC BUILDING Country Sweden Year 2014 Area 24,000 m2 Client Photographers www.zhiig.com Premium Member designer Joacim Löfgren Collaborate 3D Design Suggest Materials Suggest Product Add Request Design © ZHIG Team Materials Suggested by Manufacturers: Model Full Name Details Details View more
- Maison I | Emilien Robin | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | House | Located in Moëlan-sur-Mer, France, Maison I is a bioclimatic individual house designed by architect Emilien Robin and completed in 2009. The project was an early commission for Robin, who at the time was part of the firm Boidot Robin architectes urbanistes and had graduated from the Nantes National School of Architecture in 2006. The house, created as a secondary residence, was designed with a bioclimatic strategy in mind, prioritizing low-energy performance and a minimal construction budget, especially given its location in a coastal area. The design intentionally moves away from purely formal gestures, instead reinterpreting elements of vernacular architecture to create a contemporary house that is deeply connected to its surroundings. The architecture uses a simple, modern design that is well-integrated into the natural landscape. Its understated aesthetic and thoughtful use of materials create a dwelling that is both beautiful and respectful of its environment.
