The building exhibits a ""gritty, imperfect nature"" that gives it a timeless character, despite being new construction. The design purposefully incorporates reused materials, with reclaimed oak forming the main structure and brick salvaged from a 1940s printing press making up parts of the construction. The black siding pays homage to the traditional tobacco barns found throughout the Eastern U.S. landscape. An architect's great-grandfather's swing is also incorporated into the design, adding a personal and historical touch. The result is a structure that looks as though it has existed on the property for a much longer time. While serving as a retreat for camping and socially distanced gatherings, Perch 2.0's purpose extends beyond its function. The cabin is composed of a dark, angular form wrapped in blackened autoclaved timber, which helps it blend seamlessly into the forest. The layout is distributed across two floors, with the ground floor featuring a master bedroom and bathroom, along with a small terrace. The upper floor contains the main living areas—a lounge, kitchen, and dining area. This second level features a vaulted ceiling and expansive, panoramic windows that open toward the forest, creating a sense of expansiveness and a ""cinematic"" connection to the natural setting. Smaller windows on the ground floor enhance intimacy and privacy. A balcony extends the living area, and the staircase connecting the two floors visually reinforces the sense of openness. These slats function as a rainscreen, providing shade and allowing air to circulate, which helps passively cool the building in the hot Australian summer, eliminating the need for air conditioning. Inside, the palette is intentionally pared-back and warm, with floors, walls, and ceilings lined entirely in Victorian ash wood. The compact layout includes a bedroom, a bathroom, and an open-plan kitchen and living area. The living space features a full-span glass wall that frames spectacular views of the gully and the surrounding tall trees. The design also incorporates bespoke, built-in furniture designed by Robbie Walker himself.
