Founded by architect Emelie Holmberg, the company aims to be a leading innovator in future housing, focusing on customizable, eco-friendly homes that offer flexibility in size and configuration, ranging from small turnkey houses to larger villas. Their designs prioritize blending indoor and outdoor spaces and are often influenced by Scandinavian minimalism and Japanese architecture. The company began as a prototype for Holmberg's own self-build, low-cost home, evolving into a system of prefabricated modules to bring down costs and allow for adaptation. The house, completed in 2021, served as a prototype for a new housing model and later led to the creation of the company gimme shelter solutions, founded by Holmberg in 2018. The design consists of two separate wooden modules: a larger, 32-square-meter living unit and a smaller, 10-square-meter sleeping unit. These units are linked by a sheltered outdoor space, allowing for a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor life. The project's aesthetic is influenced by traditional Swedish building methods, particularly the use of prefabricated parts to reduce cost, and by Japanese architecture, which emphasizes simplicity and a connection to nature. The modules feature wide verandas and large windows that frame panoramic views of the surrounding forest, further blurring the line between the built and natural environment. The gimme shelter solutions company builds upon this initial project by offering a "Lego-like" system of prefabricated modular homes. Customers can combine various modules of different sizes to create a personalized, unique home that suits their needs and budget. This scalable approach allows homeowners to start small and expand their living space over time if their circumstances change. Beyond the standard living units, the company also offers specialized modules such as yoga studios, workshops, and saunas, all designed with sustainability in mind. The project, conceived in 2017 when the architect acquired a large quantity of rough-sawn white oak lumber, was built over three years and was heavily influenced by the process of its own creation. The availability, condition, and sizes of the salvaged materials dictated the form of the final structure, resulting in a design that is both a practical retreat and a testament to unconventional architectural production. The building exhibits a ""gritty, imperfect nature"" that gives it a timeless character, despite being new construction. The design purposefully incorporates reused materials, with reclaimed oak forming the main structure and brick salvaged from a 1940s printing press making up parts of the construction. The black siding pays homage to the traditional tobacco barns found throughout the Eastern U.S. landscape. An architect's great-grandfather's swing is also incorporated into the design, adding a personal and historical touch. The result is a structure that looks as though it has existed on the property for a much longer time. While serving as a retreat for camping and socially distanced gatherings, Perch 2.0's purpose extends beyond its function. Much of its value was realized during the construction process itself, allowing the architect to explore a direct and unmediated approach to building. The shelter is also intended to be a base from which to design future architectural interventions on the property. Situated in the forested hillside of Valea lui Enache, Romania, the cabin was built upon the foundations and footprint of a previously failed structure and a small, family-built annex. This approach minimized the project's environmental impact by focusing on renewal rather than replacement. The design balances minimalist form with deep respect for its rural surroundings. The cabin is composed of a dark, angular form wrapped in blackened autoclaved timber, which helps it blend seamlessly into the forest. The layout is distributed across two floors, with the ground floor featuring a master bedroom and bathroom, along with a small terrace. The upper floor contains the main living areas—a lounge, kitchen, and dining area. This second level features a vaulted ceiling and expansive, panoramic windows that open toward the forest, creating a sense of expansiveness and a ""cinematic"" connection to the natural setting. Smaller windows on the ground floor enhance intimacy and privacy. A balcony extends the living area, and the staircase connecting the two floors visually reinforces the sense of openness. The minimalist palette of clean, neutral finishes throughout the interior directs focus to the surrounding nature. Sustainable features include efficient insulation, natural ventilation, and passive solar orientation to reduce mechanical intervention. The project has received recognition at the Bucharest Architecture Annual 2025. Credits Architect: Ștefan Păvăluță of Vinklu Inc. Developed as part of MAPA's portable housing series, the MINIMODs were installed on a sprawling property in Catuçaba, near São Paulo, Brazil. The project serves as a contemporary reinterpretation of the primitive retreat, offering an immersive connection to the natural landscape. The cabins were constructed in a factory in an industrial town, transported over 150 km in separate modules, and then assembled on-site using crane trucks. This process highlights the efficiency and environmental responsibility of prefabricated construction. Each module is a 3x3x3 meter cube, built with cross-laminated timber (CLT) technology, a system that was unique in Brazil at the time. The two cabins were installed approximately 1,000 meters apart in different landscapes on the property, each adapting its spatial configuration to its specific location. The first MINIMOD, situated on a hilltop, adopts a cruciform layout, with each space oriented towards a different cardinal direction. This arrangement offers occupants a panoramic experience of the surrounding nature, from dawn to dusk. The second MINIMOD is placed discreetly near a small pond, turning its back to the access road. This linear configuration, parallel to the hill slope, integrates with the landscape and opens onto an expansive deck. Both cabins feature large windows that blur the line between interior and exterior, framing captivating views of the forests, lake, and mountains. The design prioritizes a minimalist aesthetic, with a compact and efficient layout. The simple yet elegant cabins act as ""plug-and-play"" devices, ready to connect with and be used in any remote setting. It was created as a compact residential retreat for a client who valued a deep connection with nature and sought a sustainable escape to share with family and friends. Located in Sawmill Settlement, a leafy, alpine environment at the base of Mount Buller, the cabin is perched above a gully where street water discharges during large storms. The design is a clever response to the challenging site. The structure is elevated on four slim, steel columns that mimic the surrounding tree trunks, allowing water and wildlife to pass freely underneath. The single-story, rectangular cabin is wrapped in a skin of dark, weathered steel slats chosen for their durability in a bushfire-prone area (BAL 40 zone). These slats function as a rainscreen, providing shade and allowing air to circulate, which helps passively cool the building in the hot Australian summer, eliminating the need for air conditioning. Inside, the palette is intentionally pared-back and warm, with floors, walls, and ceilings lined entirely in Victorian ash wood. The compact layout includes a bedroom, a bathroom, and an open-plan kitchen and living area. The living space features a full-span glass wall that frames spectacular views of the gully and the surrounding tall trees. The design also incorporates bespoke, built-in furniture designed by Robbie Walker himself. A separate, smaller structure built on a flatter section of the site includes a garage, laundry, and a hidden outdoor kitchen. The project's most significant environmental achievement is its restraint. Despite having ample space, the client chose to build a small, one-bedroom retreat to minimize its impact on the special site.
