The house was designed as a place of refuge, standing between a conventional seaside subdivision and a rugged coastal landscape of wind-swept dunes. The form of the dwelling takes inspiration from a piece of weathered, charred driftwood that has come to rest in the dunes. The exterior is defined by a singular, eroded angular shape clad in weathering black cedar, creating a sense of a protective shell. In contrast, the interior reveals warm, honey-toned timber linings, representing the untouched inner wood of the driftwood. The interior layout is bisected by a diagonal path that leads to a stairwell, taking guests up to the main elevated living space. From this raised position, the occupants can observe the sweeping views of the dunes and the sea. The dynamic geometry of the exterior is reflected in the interior, which features a variety of spatial experiences, from expansive, lofty areas to low, snug window seats. Openings and windows are strategically placed to maximize views of the natural environment, while solid walls on the opposite side provide refuge from the neighbouring suburbia. The building is conceived as a highly tense and dynamic geometric solid. The light is reflected in multiple ways by smooth, crystalline surfaces, thus subjecting the building’s appearance to permanent optical changes during the course of the day. Movement and light manifest themselves clearly as essential parameters for the film as a medium in the architectural production. The entrance into the building is characterised by continuous spatial concentration and directed visual relations. Spatial development, light incidence, and materiality define the path that leads from the southern glass front and the museum shop into the heart of the building. The room widens successively, before unfolding its full dimensions as an architectural and functional focus. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Cabin Moss is a tiny, 40 m² cabin located in the forest of Kőszeg, Hungary, near the Austrian border. Designed by Béres Architects in collaboration with the owner, Attila Hideg, the project was completed in 2021. The cabin is a personal and thoughtful design, intentionally built to be constructed by a single person and to exist in harmonious integration with the surrounding natural landscape. The architects at Béres, led by Attila Béres, adopted the philosophy of "Measure twice, dig once". This principle is evident in the cabin's minimalist design and its minimal impact on the forest ecosystem. The cabin's long, angular form is elevated on slender stilts, a strategic decision that allows it to float above the sloping terrain. This approach preserves the fragile root systems of the hundred-year-old trees on the site, which was a core consideration from the outset. The design is a testament to the "stay small" ethos, emphasizing a comfortable living space without unnecessary square meters or wasted areas. The cabin is oriented to frame views of the natural surroundings while presenting a more closed facade to the nearby road, offering maximum privacy. The cabin's construction is a model of low-impact, sustainable building. By using stilts, the need for extensive digging and foundation work was eliminated, protecting the natural ground. This is what the first impression gives - especially when coming from the road at the back - where the building seems closed and modest. While it slides well into cultural-historical diversity, it makes assumptions about a twist. Looking better, you notice that several of the cladding tables are angled, so that they close the building to the back and open to the front. If you come in you experience the purpose - you are shielded while having access to the whole sea. The bathhouse rests on a galvanized steel frame that stands on two granite columns and a concrete base at the rear. The building is designed to fit into the environment without sticking out too much while having a modern design language. This is solved by working with the building as a volume of scarce details instead of surfaces such as roof and wall. The materials are treated with the same color to enhance the experience of the volume. The materials consist of solid wood floors and ceilings and a room with toilet at the back with walls of solid wood that stiffen the construction. In the main room, the traditional stonework structure has been removed and replaced by thicker cladding tables angled 45° carrying the ceiling. Between each cladding table are mounted narrow transparent acrylic panels.
