RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Skatehouse 2, designed by Argentine architect Macu Bulgubure and completed in 2021, is an off-grid cabin built for a skateboarder in the wild wetlands of the Paraná River near Rosario, Argentina. Situated in a flood-prone area, the structure is elevated on stilts for protection from rising waters and to allow services to be delivered off-grid. The cabin's design cleverly integrates a large skate ramp, which was originally planned as a separate structure, into its exterior, forming a curved, elevated deck. NOKE Architects used this limitation to their advantage, designing a compact cottage that maximizes both form and function. COMMERCIAL | Office | The design of the Central Bank of Azerbaijan in Baku takes the economical high-rise typology as a starting point. The East-West oriented slab and its polygonal geometry rises then into a sculpturally twisted volume, glazed from top to bottom and open to its surroundings. The client asked for a symbolic building, open and light, to replace the hermetically-sealed structure of the former Headquarters. Situated on the Heydar-Aliyev Avenue, the 164 meters tall tower becomes a highly visible landmark of the capital city, a significant point of reference in the Baku skyline. Two other iconic buildings of modern Baku are located further South-West, on the same main road: the Baku Convention Center designed by Coop Himmelb(l)au (2015), and Zaha Hadid’s Heydar Aliyev Center (2012). A transparent, full-height atrium enhances the design, thereby generating a new high-rise typology that transforms the traditional office block into a vibrant place to work. The atrium functions as a ​“vertical city” with platforms functionally connecting spaces across the atrium and dividing it horizontally into urban-like neighborhoods. Numerous ​“short circuit” stairs and ramps connect several of the office floors across this ample interstitial space, creating informal meeting lounges and circulation patterns, similar to streets and passages of a city. Additionally, hanging gardens and daylight reflecting cones bring light and vegetation into the microclimate of the Vertical City. The atrium thus unfolds as a pleasant and dynamic communication forum, providing stunning views of the city of Baku and the Caspian Sea. SHELTERS | Prefabricated | The Bivacco Brédy is a high-altitude mountain shelter designed as a tribute to Claudio Brédy, a local politician and alpinist from Italy's Aosta Valley who tragically died in 2017. Six bunks made from climbing cord line the sides, leading to a common area with a large window. A vestibule provides space for gear storage. RESIDENTIAL | House | Vipp Cold Hawaii is a contemporary guesthouse in Thy National Park, Denmark, designed by the local architect studio Hahn Lavsen. The project, which opened in 2024, involved transforming a historic early 1900s fisherman's cottage on a secluded 9,900-square-meter plot into a bookable retreat for surfers and nature lovers. While its silhouette hints at the traditional cottages of the area, the new structure features minimalist geometric forms and a restrained material palette. To create a robust yet understated structure that could withstand the coastal elements, Hahn Lavsen chose to work with a palette of just five materials, processed as little as possible. These include whitewashed aerated concrete walls for insulation, a roof of untreated Douglas fir heartwood designed to age gracefully, and classic oak stable doors that allow for natural ventilation and echo the area's agricultural past. Inside, the floors are exposed brick laid in sand, a textural reference to the nearby sandy beaches. The 185-square-meter guesthouse features a spacious, open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area, along with three double bedrooms and two bathrooms. Inside, the interior design by Julie Cloos Mølsgaard complements the minimalist architecture with a calm, neutral color palette and furnishings from Vipp. The heart of the home is a Vipp V3 kitchen, and large windows throughout frame expansive, panoramic views of the national park and the North Sea.
