CULTURAL | Museum | Now the official museum of the German Armed Forces, the Dresden Museum of Military History has assumed varying and contradictory identities across its history. The building began its life as an armory, before becoming the Saxon Army Museum, followed by a stint as a Nazi military museum, then a Soviet and East German Museum. Uncertain of the institution’s role in the reunified state, the German government closed the museum and launched an international competition to redesign the structure. Studio Libeskind was selected as design architect for the extension in 2001, after presenting a bold design outside the competition guidelines. The Studio’s approach was that the museum must change its identity in order to achieve the institution’s vision. The unique challenge of this project was that the original brief required that the extension must not interfere with the historic façade. The design boldly interrupts the original building’s classical symmetry. The extension, a massive, five-story 14,500-ton wedge of glass, concrete, and steel, cuts into and through the former arsenal’s classical order. Designed for a young couple seeking an escape from urban intensity, the project harmoniously integrates living, working, and daily routines within its serene natural setting. The design respects the land's slope and incorporates existing trees, making nature a key part of the architecture. The structure consists of two rectangular volumes layered and rotated to create an L-shaped configuration that organizes the home's program on two levels and frames views of the forest. Translucent facades give the house a light appearance and connect the interior and exterior. Large windows frame views of the outdoors. The ground floor includes public areas like a patio, study, and open living, dining, and kitchen area. An internal staircase leads to the private areas upstairs. The house appears to float on the landscape from a distance, with views opening up upon entry. Changes in scale and materials create a warmer feel in the upper-level bedrooms. Designed for a young couple seeking an escape from urban intensity, the project harmoniously integrates living, working, and daily routines within its serene natural setting. The design respects the land's slope and incorporates existing trees, making nature a key part of the architecture. The structure consists of two rectangular volumes layered and rotated to create an L-shaped configuration that organizes the home's program on two levels and frames views of the forest. Translucent facades give the house a light appearance and connect the interior and exterior. Large windows frame views of the outdoors. The ground floor includes public areas like a patio, study, and open living, dining, and kitchen area. An internal staircase leads to the private areas upstairs. The house appears to float on the landscape from a distance, with views opening up upon entry. Changes in scale and materials create a warmer feel in the upper-level bedrooms. RESIDENTIAL | House | The "Cottage Near a Pond" by Czech studio Atelier 111 Architekti is a holiday home in the Vysočina region of the Czech Republic, completed in 2018. The design was inspired by traditional fisherman's cabins and created a special layout to maximize space within strict local building regulations. The cottage is made up of four timber-clad masses, three connected and one separate, which together form a functional and charming holiday house. The design reinterprets the form of traditional fishing huts, with their simple, gabled roofs, to create a rustic yet modern aesthetic. To navigate the site's legal size limits—a maximum built-up area of 50 m² and a maximum height of 5 meters the architects designed a clever floor plan that maximizes usable space. The clustered cabins appear like a small settlement or cluster of sheds. This approach breaks up the mass of the building while organizing different functions. Despite its small size, the cottage offers abundant views. Large windows in the kitchen and bedroom overlook the pond, while the living space opens toward a stand of mature oak trees on the other side. The interior of the cottage is warm and functional, with a minimalist material palette. The central entry leads into the kitchen, which is fully equipped for holiday stays. Above the kitchen is a small, built-in attic designed as a sleeping area for children, using every available inch of space. In addition to the kitchen, the main cottage contains a bedroom with views of the water and a living area that faces the sunlit oak trees.
