Completed in 2017, the 91-square-meter home is located in a forested area near the Kattegat seashore. It is characterized by a vaulted steel roof and a long, extruded tube shape, giving it a distinctive yet simple aesthetic that reinterprets traditional Danish cabins and barns. PUBLIC | Multi-use facility | Completed in 2002, the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) is a multi-use facility built for the Victorian State Government in Melbourne, Australia. The project combines the existing infrastructure of three organisations, ACCA, Chunky Move and Playbox, to create a unified major presence in the Arts, and form a precinct with the existing Malthouse theatre building located on the adjacent site. The building is designed to make reference to its primary function; it is a sculpture in which to exhibit art. The bold form and materiality of the façade is intended to create a strong presence and express with optimism, and in a frugal sense, a robust laboratory for experimentation. RESIDENTIAL | House | Designed by MRTN Architects, the Nulla Vale House and Shed is a pair of off-grid rural structures located on a granite-flecked, 300-acre property in Nulla Vale, Australia. Conceived as a back-to-basics retreat for a city-based couple, the project evokes the aesthetic of weathered agricultural outbuildings while providing a comfortable and sustainable refuge. The house and the custom-designed shed share identical dimensions and a classic gable-ended form, subtly referencing the familiar rural sheds found throughout the area. Upon closer inspection, however, their unique identities emerge through their distinct materials. The shed is entirely clad in heritage-grade corrugated galvanized iron and houses equipment, batteries, and the off-grid solar system. The house is constructed with salvaged bricks, corrugated iron, and rough-sawn timber. This earthy material palette was chosen to make the building appear as though it has long been part of the landscape. The positioning of the structures was determined by a desire line—a natural path worn by animals—on a land saddle with vast views but exposed to strong winds. Inside the 50-square-meter house, the design continues the theme of honest, utilitarian simplicity. The interior is free of plasterboard and paint, with exposed timber trusses and reflective insulation serving as the ceiling finish. This creates a warm, textured atmosphere reminiscent of "sleeping out in a shed," a direct contrast to the clients' clean, modern city home. The house provides the essentials for eating, sleeping, and washing, connecting the inhabitants more directly with their environment. Sustainable features were integrated from the outset. The compact, north-facing footprint is optimized for solar gain, and deep roof overhangs are calculated to block harsh summer sun while allowing low winter sun to warm the burnished concrete slab floors. Additional thermal mass is provided by insulated double-brick walls. The house features cross-ventilation and a 5.2 kWp PV system, and it relies on rainwater tanks for water supply. Designed for a minimal lifecycle cost, the house can also be extended in the future when the owners plan to transition to permanent rural living. Situated in a forest clearing in Kanji Dol, Slovenia, the project was created for a young Slovenian family who, living in a big city in Italy, wanted a home that allowed them to be surrounded by nature. The design is a modern interpretation of the traditional mountain cabin, with exaggerated angles and oblique sides that give it a distinctive appearance while allowing it to blend into the surrounding landscape. Its simple form was intentionally created to minimize disruption to the environment and withstand the harsh Slovenian weather. The Wooden House's exterior is protected by durable, dark metal siding and thick insulation, which contrast with the light-wood interior. This warm, timber-clad interior offers a sense of being outdoors and helps blur the line between interior and exterior spaces. A large glass facade on one side of the house lets in ample natural light and provides expansive views of the forest and hills, connecting nearly every room to the natural surroundings. The layout maximizes the home's limited space with an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area on the ground floor. RESIDENTIAL | House | The Hempcrete House is a compact, sustainable off-grid dwelling designed by Altereco Design and completed in 2023. Located in the alpine-adjacent town of Lyonville, Central Victoria, Australia, the house serves as a prototype for energy-efficient living using hempcrete, a carbon-negative material. The house embraces a "just enough" design philosophy with a small 75-square-meter footprint. This provides a functional and beautiful living space that emphasizes elegant simplicity. The main construction material consists of 300mm-thick walls of hempcrete (a mix of hemp hurd, lime, and water). The hempcrete provides excellent thermal insulation, resists fire, mold, and pests, and offers a natural, earthy texture. The home is oriented to the north to maximize solar gain during the cold winters. Wide eaves are used to shade the interior from the sun during the summer. Polished concrete floors and internal hempcrete walls absorb and release heat to help regulate the internal temperature. Natural ventilation: Operable clerestory windows create a "chimney effect" to naturally cool and ventilate the home in summer. The floor plan includes an airlock entry, bathroom, kitchen, and open-plan living/dining area on the ground floor. A mezzanine level accommodates the bedroom. Climate control: Despite experiencing sub-zero temperatures, the home can maintain a comfortable indoor temperature of 20°C (68°F) without using additional heating. Sustainability and performance The all-electric home is powered by a 5.2kW solar PV system located on an adjacent shed. A rainwater harvesting and filtration system collects water in large repurposed wine vats. The wastewater is treated with a biological worm farm system. The hemp used in construction sequesters carbon from the atmosphere during its growth. When combined with lime, the material continues to harden and sequester carbon throughout the building's lifespan. The project minimized waste through careful planning and by using reclaimed materials. Only two small trailer loads of waste went to a landfill. Reclaimed Messmate timber was used for the upstairs flooring, shelving, kitchen cupboards, and other trim. Polished concrete floors and internal hempcrete walls absorb and release heat to help regulate the internal temperature. Natural ventilation: Operable clerestory windows create a "chimney effect" to naturally cool and ventilate the home in summer. The floor plan includes an airlock entry, bathroom, kitchen, and open-plan living/dining area on the ground floor. A mezzanine level accommodates the bedroom. Climate control: Despite experiencing sub-zero temperatures, the home can maintain a comfortable indoor temperature of 20°C (68°F) without using additional heating. Sustainability and performance The all-electric home is powered by a 5.2kW solar PV system located on an adjacent shed. A rainwater harvesting and filtration system collects water in large repurposed wine vats. The wastewater is treated with a biological worm farm system. The hemp used in construction sequesters carbon from the atmosphere during its growth. When combined with lime, the material continues to harden and sequester carbon throughout the building's lifespan. The project minimized waste through careful planning and by using reclaimed materials. Only two small trailer loads of waste went to a landfill. Reclaimed Messmate timber was used for the upstairs flooring, shelving, kitchen cupboards, and other trim. RESIDENTIAL | Cottage | Set against the rugged landscape of the Jizera Mountains in the Czech Republic, the Cottage Pod Bukovou by Mjölk architekti is a revitalization of an unfinished 1980s cabin. The project transformed the eccentric, derelict structure into an elegant and bold mountain retreat, consisting of a main cottage and a smaller annexed cabin that houses a sauna and a guest bedroom. The design draws on the atmosphere of the forest environment, where foggy, dreary weather can be "the best" for creating a cozy, contemporary interior. The most striking feature of the renovation is the exterior, where the original gray facade was completely replaced with vertical blackened timber paneling. The dark wood covers both the walls and the A-frame pitched roofs, giving both the main cottage and the sauna cabin a sculptural, abstract appearance where the roof, walls, and chimney merge into a single, unified shape. In contrast to the angular silhouette, some of the windows are cut into round shapes, evoking the feel of an oversized birdhouse. Inside the 85.5-square-meter main cottage, the layout was reorganized for greater efficiency while maintaining the original living space. The interior is simple and functional, with a cozy atmosphere created by the crackling fire in a large fireplace. The sleeping arrangements were changed to accommodate two bedrooms. Both houses are raised on stilts, leaving the ground and rocks underneath untouched, creating a sense of floating above the terrain. Outdoor bridges and platforms, suspended from the facade, extend the living space around the houses. The simple, timber-framed structures are covered in a maintenance-free mineral facade in a shade of gray similar to the rocks, while the rounded, barrel-vaulted roofs echo the shape of the weathered surroundings. The main house features a simple floor plan, with a large, open living room and kitchen area facing the ocean and a more private rear section containing bedrooms and the entrance. Large sliding glass doors in the main living space allow for an open connection to the outdoors, seamlessly blending interior and exterior spaces. The designs draw inspiration from the rugged landscape and the contrast between the tough climate and the relaxed atmosphere of a summer retreat. Both houses are raised on stilts, leaving the ground and rocks underneath untouched, creating a sense of floating above the terrain. Outdoor bridges and platforms, suspended from the facade, extend the living space around the houses. The simple, timber-framed structures are covered in a maintenance-free mineral facade in a shade of gray similar to the rocks, while the rounded, barrel-vaulted roofs echo the shape of the weathered surroundings. The main house features a simple floor plan, with a large, open living room and kitchen area facing the ocean and a more private rear section containing bedrooms and the entrance. Large sliding glass doors in the main living space allow for an open connection to the outdoors, seamlessly blending interior and exterior spaces. Inside, the walls are paneled with untreated fir, creating a warm, natural aesthetic. In the evening, the low western sun catches the interior fir, making the house appear as a ""glowing eye-catcher"" from the sea. CULTURAL | Cultural center | The Nazarbayev Centre is the archive and library of the President of Kazakhstan located just off the central axis between the Presidential Palace and the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation. Its distinctive bowl-like form rises from the middle of a large formal landscaped garden, and is topped by a glass oculus spanning 90-metres, with views towards the Presidential Palace and gardens. Each piece of marble on the façade is only 15millimetres thick, to reduce the weight of the stone, which has then been laminated onto an aluminium honeycomb mesh to give it stability. The glazed roof is a shallow dome, supported by a steel frame and a steel ring beam that gives the structure its strength. Internally, the floors step back to reveal a large atrium at ground level. The study desks on the library floors face out onto the atrium, creating a dynamic, interactive space for research, similar to the practice’s earlier work on the Berlin Free University. The building’s orientation and form is a response to the sun’s path to limit the direct sunlight onto the glazed roof. The concrete walls are heavily insulated responding to extreme climatic conditions, with high-performance glass covering the roof.
