RESIDENTIAL | Cottage | The Cottage in Klínec is a wooden retreat designed by Czech architectural firm Archicraft. Completed in 2022, the project involved demolishing an existing cottage and designing a new wooden-framed structure in the same location, adhering to local regulations that required the new building to maintain the original footprint. The result is a simple and elegant cottage that provides its owners with a peaceful escape from city life. The design focuses on low-maintenance upkeep and seamless integration with the surrounding nature. Exterior: The dark color of the exterior helps the cottage blend into its forest surroundings. Wooden cladding was strategically used in shaded areas and as underlayment, while a gutterless roof was chosen to minimize maintenance. Interior: The cottage's interior is designed for comfort and relaxation, with a warm and cozy atmosphere. The layout is optimized for the owners' specific needs, which included spaces for a painting easel and a small desk. The living room features a kitchen, a sofa, and a fireplace. The sofa is positioned to offer a view of both the fireplace and a television. All bathrooms are equipped with windows for natural ventilation and light. RESIDENTIAL | Housing | Living Places Copenhagen, an experimental project by EFFEKT architects in collaboration with the VELUX Group, Artelia engineers, and Enemærke & Petersen contractors, was unveiled in April 2023 in Copenhagen's Jernbanebyen district. This prototype village demonstrates that it is already possible to build healthy, low-carbon, and affordable homes using readily available materials and existing construction techniques, rather than relying on future technology. The initiative was part of Copenhagen's tenure as UNESCO World Capital of Architecture in 2023. The project showcases seven full-scale prototypes, comprising five open pavilions and two complete, ready-to-live-in homes. These are built based on five key principles that aim to create homes that are healthy, affordable, simple, scalable, and adaptable over time. A comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment was conducted for each material, design, and building technique to carefully evaluate and minimize its environmental impact. The result is a total CO2 footprint nearly three times lower than that of an average Danish house, while also ensuring a first-class indoor climate. The two completed homes are a timber frame house, built with standard wood construction, and a cross-laminated timber (CLT) house. Both are designed with a focus on healthy indoor environments, optimizing daylight, thermal comfort, acoustics, and air quality. Natural ventilation is prioritized wherever possible. To ensure affordability, the designs focus on simple and efficient construction methods that do not add significant cost. The modular approach also allows for future scalability and adaptability to different settings. The project's design also features a focus on disassembly, so that the village can be deconstructed and rebuilt elsewhere after its initial 3–5-year test period, further extending the lifespan of the materials. The concept's long-term goal is to inspire and challenge the building industry to adopt more sustainable practices. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Lucia Smart Cabin is a 24-square-meter glass-and-steel modular unit designed in 2019 by Finnish firm Pirinen Salo Oy for the glass construction company Savon Lasituote Oy. Conceived as a high-quality "hideout" or experiential space, the cabin was created to offer occupants uninterrupted, panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the sky. The initial prototype was installed in Inari, Finland, near Juutuanvuono Lake, with an almost 360-degree vista of the riverside site. Completed in 2022, the 47-square-meter cabin was designed by Oslo-based firm KIMA Arkitektur in collaboration with the owners, an internationally acclaimed furniture and product designer couple. Inspired by the aesthetic of local fishing huts, the cabin's minimal and modest silhouette is strategically placed among rocky outcrops to provide shelter from the elements. To maximize the small footprint for a family of five, the interior features an open-plan living room and kitchen, a bedroom, and a bathroom. The interior design, overseen by the client, incorporates custom-built kitchen furnishings to suit the compact space. The inside is clad entirely in pine wood, creating a warm, camp-like atmosphere that emphasizes the structure's materiality. The cabin is oriented toward the sea, with large windows providing expansive views of the water. A small outdoor deck and jetty further connect the residents with their surroundings, allowing for easy access to the water and coastal landscape. The exterior is also clad in pine wood, helping the cabin blend seamlessly into the Norwegian shore. The structure was built by local craftspeople, ensuring it reflects the regional building traditions.
