A notable feature is the drawbridge entrance, which can be lowered to act as a set of stairs or raised to secure the house and create a window shutter. The house has become a minor tourist attraction, with the space underneath even being used by local grazing animals as a shelter. SHELTERS | Cabin | In 2015, Amsterdam-based CC-Studio unveiled "Thoreau's Cabin," a discreet off-grid shelter nestled within the expansive 5,900-acre Noorderpark in Utrecht, Netherlands. Conceived as a warm and dry retreat for the volunteers who maintain the park, the 35-square-meter cabin was designed to harmonize with its natural surroundings, rather than dominate them. The cabin's design cleverly employs a strategy of camouflage, making its presence barely perceptible until one is close to it. The volume is shaped and the exterior is clad in a green aluminum envelope to allow it to be concealed by the forest's lush foliage. Two large sliding doors on one corner can be fully opened, seamlessly blending the interior with the surrounding meadow where sheep graze. This allows occupants to control their level of exposure to the outdoors. A sculptural hearth at the cabin's center supports a folding aluminum-clad roof structure, creating an open canopy that extends the protected space outwards. The cabin was built without requiring a permit because it replaced a pre-existing 1966 cottage of a similar size and function, which had served as a break and storage shelter for park maintenance. The new design, however, features thoughtful updates and sustainable touches. The cabin was intentionally designed without electricity or running water, reinforcing Thoreau's ideals of simplicity and self-sufficiency. A sculptural hearth functions as the central element, providing heat from local firewood. It serves as a combined kitchen and fireplace. RESIDENTIAL | House | The Fremont House is a 1,000-square-foot, 100% solar-powered, off-grid home located in the remote Western Catskill Mountains near Roscoe, New York. Designed by Marc Thorpe Design + Architecture and completed around 2023, the cabin was built as an affordable, sustainable, and contemporary home with integrated technology. The project is based on a philosophy of self-reliance, with the house designed to exist in harmony with nature and emphasize quality over quantity. The house features a compact footprint but incorporates a traditional residential layout, with a division between public and private spaces. The ground floor contains the kitchen, dining, and living areas, while two bedrooms and a bathroom are located on the upper level. The exterior is clad in Douglas fir stained in a charcoal grey color, which aids in heat retention during the region's cool year-round climate. The house was constructed using locally sourced lumber. A rooftop array of 16 solar panels provides all the home's electricity, contributing to its self-sustaining, independent nature. COMMERCIAL | Office Building | As an integrative local city center that is neatly positioned in the surrounding urban context, this project in the Neuperlach district in Munich clearly upgrades the architectural profile of this section of the town. The building complex offers a framework for public utilization, for 160 subsidized apartments, and for a number of social and cultural institutions. Forming a kind of a clasp, a flying roof ties the individual buildings of the new complex together. The private and public use of the roof gardens ensures a high level of identification on the part of the local residents. “From an architectural and urban planning point of view, the design of Delugan Meissl finally gives the center of Neuperlach the attention it deserves as a home to over 109,000 residents”, says Prof. Dr. Elisabeth Merk, Munich’s City Building Councilor. “The grand gesture of the building complex addresses the urban planning concept of the Hanns-Seidel-Square and offers an excellent framework of public use, as well as its use as a residential area. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Skatehouse 2, designed by Argentine architect Macu Bulgubure and completed in 2021, is an off-grid cabin built for a skateboarder in the wild wetlands of the Paraná River near Rosario, Argentina. Situated in a flood-prone area, the structure is elevated on stilts for protection from rising waters and to allow services to be delivered off-grid. The cabin's design cleverly integrates a large skate ramp, which was originally planned as a separate structure, into its exterior, forming a curved, elevated deck. Beyond its function as a skating area, this curve also serves a dual purpose by providing shade for the interior from the high summer sun. The 76-square-meter cabin was constructed using a steel frame with locally sourced, treated eucalyptus and galvanized steel sheets, providing a durable exterior that stayed within budget. The location, a triangular-shaped plot, presented a key constraint: the regulations for allotment gardens mandate that permanent structures cannot exceed 35 square meters. NOKE Architects used this limitation to their advantage, designing a compact cottage that maximizes both form and function. The house is intentionally hidden from the street and only gradually reveals itself as one moves through the lush, free-growing greenery of the garden. This sense of discovery begins with a winding path of red stones, complemented by a glowing art installation, that leads visitors from the street. Inside, the compact space integrates a living area, kitchen, workspace, sleeping nook, and bathroom. Inspired by the colorful personalities of its owners, singer and artist Magda Grabowska-Wacławek and her husband, animator Grzegorz Wacławek, the retreat serves as a tranquil escape from city life. Its electric red color palette and maximalist design aesthetic boldly translate the owners' creative spirit into architectural form. The location, a triangular-shaped plot, presented a key constraint: the regulations for allotment gardens mandate that permanent structures cannot exceed 35 square meters. NOKE Architects used this limitation to their advantage, designing a compact cottage that maximizes both form and function. The house is intentionally hidden from the street and only gradually reveals itself as one moves through the lush, free-growing greenery of the garden. This sense of discovery begins with a winding path of red stones, complemented by a glowing art installation, that leads visitors from the street. Inside, the compact space integrates a living area, kitchen, workspace, sleeping nook, and bathroom. The vibrant color scheme extends indoors, with plywood walls and ceilings stained with natural, eco-friendly oils. The interior palette balances the expressive colors with more muted wood tones and gray flooring. Large-format glazing visually dissolves the barrier between the interior and the garden, and can be opened to extend the living space onto the terrace. A quirky, semicircular window adds an artistic touch and offers a unique vantage point of the garden. A concealed entrance and a red, chimney-like volume housing the bathroom add an element of playful secrecy to the design. The bathroom itself is a surprising sensory experience, with cobalt tiles, mirror panels, and a glass roof that allows for stargazing while bathing. COMMERCIAL | Office | The design of the Central Bank of Azerbaijan in Baku takes the economical high-rise typology as a starting point. The East-West oriented slab and its polygonal geometry rises then into a sculpturally twisted volume, glazed from top to bottom and open to its surroundings. The client asked for a symbolic building, open and light, to replace the hermetically-sealed structure of the former Headquarters. Situated on the Heydar-Aliyev Avenue, the 164 meters tall tower becomes a highly visible landmark of the capital city, a significant point of reference in the Baku skyline. Two other iconic buildings of modern Baku are located further South-West, on the same main road: the Baku Convention Center designed by Coop Himmelb(l)au (2015), and Zaha Hadid’s Heydar Aliyev Center (2012). A transparent, full-height atrium enhances the design, thereby generating a new high-rise typology that transforms the traditional office block into a vibrant place to work. The atrium functions as a “vertical city” with platforms functionally connecting spaces across the atrium and dividing it horizontally into urban-like neighborhoods. Numerous “short circuit” stairs and ramps connect several of the office floors across this ample interstitial space, creating informal meeting lounges and circulation patterns, similar to streets and passages of a city. Additionally, hanging gardens and daylight reflecting cones bring light and vegetation into the microclimate of the Vertical City. The atrium thus unfolds as a pleasant and dynamic communication forum, providing stunning views of the city of Baku and the Caspian Sea. SHELTERS | Prefabricated | The Bivacco Brédy is a high-altitude mountain shelter designed as a tribute to Claudio Brédy, a local politician and alpinist from Italy's Aosta Valley who tragically died in 2017. Designed by BCW Collective and inaugurated in 2021, the bivouac is set at an altitude of 2,528 meters in the secluded Vertosan Valley, near the alpine lakes of Dzioule. Its design is both functional and deeply symbolic, reflecting Brédy's spirit and connection to the mountains he loved. The project was initiated by the Brédy family and was the result of an invited competition organized by YACademy and Cantieri d’Alta Quota. The winning proposal by BCW Collective was chosen for its ability to poetically and practically interpret the rugged mountain landscape and honor Brédy's memory. The cantilevered structure, which appears to launch into the void, is a poignant architectural gesture that evokes the loss of a cherished member of the community. Positioned on a rock slab, the shelter serves as a new landmark in the Vertosan Valley. The bivouac is designed for both introspection and an immersive experience of the surrounding mountains. The south-facing shelter is strategically oriented to frame dramatic views of peaks like the Grivola and Gran Paradiso, a summit Brédy had climbed. The minimalist interior focuses occupants on the landscape outside. The 12 m² interior is functional and warm, clad in wood panels. Six bunks made from climbing cord line the sides, leading to a common area with a large window. A vestibule provides space for gear storage. The cabin features a solar panel to charge mobile devices, allowing for an off-grid experience. The bivouac was prefabricated in modules to minimize its environmental impact and facilitate transport to the remote location. The structure was built in three parts, which were then delivered by helicopter and assembled on-site in a matter of days. A steel frame foundation secures the structure directly to the rock, ensuring minimal disruption to the landscape. This frame supports insulated timber panels. The exterior is covered in dark, aluminum cladding selected for its durability and resistance to harsh weather conditions.
