Originally a small security guard's bungalow measuring only 28.77 square meters, the structure had been expanded over time to serve as a family home. The main challenge for the architects was to satisfy the living needs of a family of three within the limited space while ensuring the renovated structure maintained a respectful dialogue with the surrounding protected buildings. Instead of simply replicating the historical Russian style, the design sought to strike a balance between modern living requirements and the historic neighborhood. To contend with Harbin's famously cold climate, a new foundation was dug two meters below ground to avoid damage from frost expansion in the frozen soil. The project was completed in 2017. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Completed in 2021, the Lipno Lakeside Cabin is a 118-square-meter retreat located in the Bohemian Forest near Lipno Lake in the Czech Republic. Designed by the Lyon-based firm Les Archinautes, the cabin was built in place of a previous wooden structure and serves as a base for mountain sports enthusiasts. The design reinterprets principles of local Bohemian Forest architecture, featuring a compact, gabled shape and a rectangular floor plan. The architects placed great emphasis on connecting the cabin with its natural surroundings. The living space centers around a large, square, gabled window that frames views of the lake and the two mountain peaks behind it. Inside, the building's exposed cross-laminated timber (CLT) panel structure creates a warm, cozy atmosphere, bringing the scent, color, and feel of the forest indoors. The exposed wood was treated with hard wax oil with a UV filter to preserve its color over time. The cabin's thoughtful design accommodates both functionality and connection to nature. The ground floor includes a small room, bathroom, laundry room, and a sauna, with additional storage for sports equipment. An attic level features two bedrooms with circular windows, and another bathroom and pantry. Conceived by local couple Henrik and Lene Stokkeland, and brought to life by architect Manuela Hardy, the project aimed to create a sanctuary that minimizes environmental impact while maximizing the connection to nature. Its name, Trekronå, translates to "tree crown," reflecting its design inspiration drawn from the forest's canopy. The design for the 15 square meter (161 square foot) cabin was a collaboration between the architect and the clients, driven by a mutual fascination for playful design and childhood dreams of forest cabins. The geometric shape and timber cladding are inspired by pinecones and the surrounding pine forest. The structure is lifted off the ground on three tilted steel legs, built on a hexagonal metal base frame. This allows the cabin to be removed almost without a trace, and the stilts minimize interference with the terrain. A focus on using local materials and details was maintained throughout the build. The exterior is clad in Accoya, a rot-resistant, pine-based product, while the interior features elegant oak finishes. Despite its tiny footprint, the cabin is designed to accommodate up to five people with a functional kitchen, sleeping bunks, a shower room, and a sitting area with views of the woods. The construction of Trekronå became a collaborative, hands-on effort. Client Henrik Stokkeland, a trained carpenter, took an active role in the build. When he sustained an injury, the project continued with the help of numerous volunteers from the community. This community-driven spirit is part of what makes the cabin so special. The project was completed in 2021. Since its completion, the cabin has received significant acclaim, winning the Bronze A' Design Award in Architecture in 2022. Visitors can now rent the cabin for a memorable escape and enjoy the nearby sauna and spa area, also designed by Manuela Hardy. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Cabin Laksvatn is a 50 m² retreat located on the Lyngen Peninsula near Tromsø in northern Norway, in a region known for its dramatic alpine landscape. Designed by Oslo-based Hamran/Johansen Arkitekter and completed in 2014, the cabin provides a comfortable and spacious accommodation for a large family with a total of nine beds, despite its modest footprint. The design was a creative response to the challenge of accommodating many people on a tight budget. The architects cleverly limited the net floor area to 50 m² to comply with Norwegian building codes, which impose additional technical demands on larger cabins. RESIDENTIAL | House | Completed in 2020, The Author's House is a private, 68-square-meter writing and living retreat designed by Danish architectural firm SLETH. Situated in a protected forest near Aarhus, Denmark, the cabin is a contemporary interpretation of the classic woodland cabin, designed to harmonize with its natural surroundings. It was built on the existing plinth of a previous summer house, adhering to the area's strict building regulations. The client, a writer, sought an inspirational workspace that offered a close connection to nature, rather than a traditional holiday home. This focus on work over residence is reflected in the layout, which dedicates most of the space to a large, flexible living and studio area, with only a small sleeping loft and bathroom. The design emphasizes the transition between inside and out. Large, sliding glass doors allow the interior to extend onto an outdoor terrace, a feature that allows the writer to work in direct connection with the forest. The exterior is clad in a dark, reddish-brown copper, chosen to blend with the trunks of the surrounding beech trees and a nearby lake. This copper façade will naturally patinate over time, gradually turning green to further integrate the structure into the landscape. Inside, the material palette is warm and natural. The flooring, a mottled aggregate concrete, mimics the forest floor and extends out onto the terrace to blur the line between interior and exterior spaces. The interior is dominated by Douglas fir wood from Danish manufacturer Dinesen, used for the ceilings, built-in furniture, kitchen, staircase, and the home's walls, which are also lined with bookcases. In a splash of vibrant color, the fireplace is painted in a deep, electric blue. The project also features sustainable measures, including geothermal heating and an efficient use of materials, where leftover wood planks were used for additional furnishings.
