RESIDENTIAL | House | Our intention was to create luxury home designs and activate the entire site by creating a series of connected spaces inside and outside of the building that respond to the physical conditions of the site and programme. We wanted to resist the urge to simply open the living area to the rear yard when there were viable opportunities for north facing living and entertaining spaces along the side boundary. The client a young couple purchased the dilapidated property with the intention of restoring the existing building and converting it into a modern living sanctuary. The site consisted of an existing brick workers cottage that had undergone several distasteful alterations over its life. One of which consisted of an addition that had been tacked onto the side of the original building resulting in a bulky and un proportional street facing elevation. This formed the premise of the brief which was initially; restore the original brick building to its original proportion as viewed from the street, re-configure the layout of the existing building to suit a young modern family and to create a rear addition to accommodate a new large living, dining and kitchen space suitable for entertaining. While the living/kitchen and dining area would generally be considered as open plan we wanted to subtly define these spaces giving each space its own spatial characteristic or purpose while maintaining the overall connection. The rotating of the living/lounge area slightly away from the other spaces resulted in a slightly more discreet space for sitting and relaxing and entry into the yard. Dealing visually with the junction between the new and old is always a challenge in contemporary alts and adds. In this case instead of playing down this interaction we envisaged a more sculptural solution. The existing building is cut physically at a suitable line then reconstructed using recycled bricks from the site to form a large sculptural wall that exaggerates a contemporary vernacular form. This form sets the line of a new roof that creates large voids with celestial windows over the hall and bathroom. From the living and entertaining areas the wall acts as a dramatic backdrop that is somewhat symbolic of its urban context and demolished remnants of site. The cabin is elevated on a single, slender concrete-filled steel column, which minimizes its footprint and allows the forest floor to remain undisturbed. The exterior is clad in black-toned pine, allowing the structure to blend with the surrounding trees, while the interior is lined with warm, light-toned wood. The 30-square-meter cabin features a minimalist and cozy interior, with all utility spaces—including a kitchenette, spacious shower, and building systems—cleverly contained within a central core. The interiors are designed as a ""welcome respite for the eyes in the desert,"" with a minimalist, dark-toned palette. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Etno Hut is a 14-square-meter tiny house designed by architect Ema Butrimaviciute of the Vilnius-based firm Utopium. Completed in 2018, the hut was conceived as a rentable retreat to provide an escape from city life, offering a comfortable and uncomplicated experience in a small space. It is situated on a wild 50-acre property in Pakalniškės, Lithuania, on a slope that backs onto a dense, old-growth forest while opening up to sweeping views of the landscape. The hut's dark exterior allows it to blend subtly with its woodland surroundings, while a large south-facing window brings warmth and natural scenery inside. A guiding principle for the project was minimizing its environmental impact. The hut was built on a steel foundation that was screwed into the ground by hand, and the entire structure, made from Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs), was prefabricated and assembled on-site in just three days. The space beneath the hut is used for storage, with piping and cables concealed for a clean look. RESIDENTIAL | House | The Lightbox is a 1,650-square-foot home and studio designed by Seattle-based architecture firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. Completed in 2015, the residence is nestled in a dense, coastal woodland on a peninsula south of British Columbia in Washington state. Designed for a photographer and his young family, the home is a celebration of light, shadows, and its tranquil forest setting. The house was created with a special appreciation for simplicity and well-crafted details, reflecting the photographer-owner's eye for light and composition. The core of the design is the juxtaposition of two contrasting volumes that are "zipped" together. A "glass cage" for living: A two-story, south-facing volume, enclosed in glass, serves as the main living space. This transparent section allows sunlight to filter through the trees, constantly changing throughout the day. A solid "black box" for privacy: The northern volume is a solid box, stained black with a traditional Finnish pine tar coating. This volume contains the stairs and other private areas, with narrow apertures that frame specific views of the old-growth Douglas firs and cedars. The house sits lightly on the land, accessed by a sloped boardwalk that crosses over the forest floor. The building's skin uses simple, affordable materials in a straightforward yet innovative way. An exposed wood structural frame supports a prefabricated, uniformly-sized aluminum window system to keep costs low. The interior further reinforces the connection to nature and the simple, robust design philosophy. Mezzanine level: Above the double-height living room, a mezzanine offers additional space while maintaining an open feel. The floors are polished concrete on the lower level and exposed wood car decking upstairs. Shelving is crafted from resawn timbers, and the interior uses wood slats to screen areas, a detail inspired by Japanese design. Hydronic radiant heat and antique cast-iron radiators efficiently keep the space warm, supplemented by a centrally located fireplace. Completed in 2015, the residence is nestled in a dense, coastal woodland on a peninsula south of British Columbia in Washington state. Designed for a photographer and his young family, the home is a celebration of light, shadows, and its tranquil forest setting. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Bookworm Cabin is a minimalist, 35-square-meter retreat located in a forest near the town of Mazovia, Poland, about 50 kilometers outside of Warsaw. Completed in 2019, the cabin was conceived by hospitality entrepreneur Bartłomiej Kraciuk and his wife, architect Marta Puchalska-Kraciuk, as a secluded escape for unplugging and focusing on reading. Marta Puchalska-Kraciuk adapted an existing concept from the Polish firm POLE Architekci and personalized it to create a haven for bibliophiles. Inspired by the surrounding forest and nearby sand dunes, the couple designed a space that encourages a deep connection with both literature and nature. The cabin's design prioritizes immersion in its surroundings. The asymmetrical structure, featuring a dramatic sloping roofline, is clad in pine and spruce to help it blend seamlessly into the wooded plot. A focal point of the design is the 16-foot-high, floor-to-ceiling windows on the front facade, which provide a dramatic view of the forest and flood the interior with natural light. Inside, the cabin functions as a personal library, with timber walls lined with bookshelves that hold hundreds of volumes. RESIDENTIAL | Private House | Embedded in a gentle hilly landscape, the house complements an existing ensemble. The adopted building configuration, with its open angles and two intersecting saddle roofs, reflects the distinctive character of the site. Completely closed towards the street, the generously glazed interior with its central living and dining area opens up to the impressive natural landscape. The spatial transition continues smoothly through a terrace laid out on several levels with a partially sheltered front area. Each room offers a variety of visual connections internally as well as to the surrounding nature. Inside, the intersection of the roof as well as the overall height of the rooms is tangible. Tall the chosen materials, white walls and polished screed are restrained and thus emphasize the particular geometry of the house. RESIDENTIAL | Summer House | Located at Følle Strand in Rønde, Denmark, the Strandvejen 35 project is a tiny summer house designed by Jesper Kusk Arkitekter, completed in 2023. The structure is a modern, yet respectful interpretation of the area's traditional fisherman's cabins, and it was created with an ethos of high quality and ingenuity within a compact 46-square-meter footprint. To maximize the small space, the design features three wood-clad, gabled volumes arranged in an offset layout, which allows the home to accommodate up to seven people. The design prioritizes a connection with the surrounding nature and a sense of spaciousness despite its modest size. Expansive glazing and strategically placed skylights draw daylight deep into the interior, while large windows frame views of the scenic Kalø Bay. To blur the line between indoor and outdoor living, the architect incorporated features like built-in benches and sofas, which create intimate zones for experiencing the natural environment even during less-than-ideal weather. High ceilings in every room also contribute to an illusion of greater volume by providing ample cubic meters of air within the home. Further enhancing the functionality of the compact design, sliding doors are used between the building volumes to flexibly divide the interior spaces, allowing for an adaptable flow that can accommodate family togetherness or quiet solitude. The primary material used is wood, a renewable and easily workable resource. The facades and roof are clad in Danish oak, which harmonizes with the coastal setting.
