The cottage's original pitched roof with pulled-down gables, a reinterpretation of the traditional "Jærhus" typology, was preserved. RESIDENTIAL | Studio | The Banyan Treehouse is a 172-square-foot accessory building located on a Brentwood hills estate in Los Angeles, designed by Rockefeller Partners Architects. The modern-day retreat was conceived as a surprise gift from a husband to his wife, an art museum patron, art collector, and philanthropist, to serve as a creative studio and lounge space. Perched 12 feet off the ground, the treehouse is situated in a back corner of the property and offers exceptional views of the Getty Center and downtown Los Angeles. The design is a clever interpretation of a childhood treehouse, reflecting the client's affinity for such a retreat while providing an adult environment. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Le Refuge KE01 is a black timber cabin nestled in the dunes of Keremma in Brittany, France, designed by Gayet Roger Architects as a family vacation retreat. Built in 2019, the 850-square-foot cabin (79 square meters) is positioned on a raised platform supported by four-foot-tall metal stilts, which protects it from the area's risk of flooding and preserves the natural terrain. A wooden footbridge connects the entrance of the house to a small path that leads to the nearby beach. The cabin's design draws inspiration from traditional Scandinavian architecture, featuring a dark exterior that allows it to blend into the surrounding landscape of tall cypress trees. The cross-laminated timber (CLT) structure is insulated with blown-in cellulose wadding and clad with rough-sawn wood strips painted with black Falun-style paint, a durable Swedish pigment. At night, the house disappears into the darkness, with only the illuminated windows visible like hanging lanterns. Inside, the warm, spruce-clad living spaces are designed with function in mind, stripped of the superfluous. The architects used rough-sawn wood panels for the built-in benches, dining table, shelving, and counters. The open-plan space is punctuated by strategically placed windows that frame specific views of the landscape. The large fixed window in the corner seating nook offers pastoral scenery, while a western bay window can be opened to extend the main room onto the terrace, blurring the line between inside and outside. Upstairs, the four sleeping areas are designed like small cabins. Each features small, eye-level windows that provide views of the landscape for those lying down and can accommodate two single beds, with a built-in bench on one side and a storage area on the other. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Located in a rainforest near the city of La Unión in southern Chile, the 3x3 Retreat is a 15-square-meter minimalist cabin designed by Estudio Diagonal. Completed in 2020, the small house is named for its 3-by-3-meter floor plan, which emphasizes a "radical geometry" in contrast with the organic nature of its surroundings. The retreat was strategically placed on a slope overlooking the Radimadi river, providing inhabitants with picturesque views and the calming sound of the running water. The cabin's program is structured in what the architects describe as "three acts". The journey begins on the ground-level terrace, which is the same size as the cabin itself, and serves as an intermediary space between the forest and the interior. The first floor, or "day floor," contains a combined kitchen, dining, and living area. A large, double-height window on the front provides a stunning view of the rainforest, making it a perfect spot to observe the winter rains while enjoying a coffee by the wood stove. The second floor, or "private floor," is reached by a ladder to save space and enhance privacy. This level houses the sleeping area and a bathroom. Construction prioritized both budget and sustainability, using standard, pre-dimensioned pine wood and leveraging local labor and traditional building techniques. The structural framework is left exposed on the interior, celebrating the construction process. This deliberate approach to materiality and form creates a simple yet lofty space, with its 4.8-meter double-height window adding an exaggerated sense of verticality. The resulting retreat is an intentional, remote oasis designed for disconnection and a deeper connection with the surrounding rainforest. HOSPITALITY | Studio | The Atelier Nyp is a sustainable artist's studio and guesthouse designed by Studio Bua on the site of a former sheep shed in remote western Iceland. The interior features exposed cross-laminated timber (CLT) walls, which create a warm and cozy atmosphere. The space is divided into two independent units: a workspace with living quarters for the artist and her husband, and a self-contained mini-apartment for guests. Salvaged materials were incorporated throughout the project, including a staircase from a historic Reykjavík building and kitchen units from a 1950s apartment.
