Completed in 2023 for a couple who run a local excavation business, the home was conceived as a resilient and thoughtful beach house that celebrates both its dramatic coastal location and the local construction trades. The design is a deliberate contrast of elements, combining a minimalist, boxy form with robust, durable materials chosen to withstand the harsh Atlantic climate of heavy winds and rain. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | A series of cabins - these structures provide accommodation for couples at the bend of river, just north of Bicheno. The buildings establish a strong engagement with the wider site, through a series of interior strategies and plan relationships that create unique and memorable experiences for guests. The compact massing of the exterior form belies a complex and surprising interior structure – heightened by the materiality of the rooms. Connections to the wider site are made to focus certain landscape qualities, which serve to background the occupation of the rooms. The sense of interiority is most strongly experienced in the most intimate parts of the plan, where detailing sets a relief for the seasonal inhabitation of the interiors. The brief from the client was for ""a room with a view of the sea,"" and the design delivers on this with two large windows framing the distinctive, windswept landscape of the ocean on one side and pine trees on the other. A large sliding glass door effectively doubles the living area when opened, blurring the line between indoors and outdoors. The cabin was constructed with minimal impact on the environment, raised off the ground to sit lightly on the plot. Its exterior features Swedish spruce, painted with a matte black finish, a color choice that references the vernacular architecture of local fishing cabins. The 20-square-meter structure is situated on the remote island of Trossö, off the west coast of Sweden, and was commissioned by a private client who spends summers there. As there are no roads on the island, all materials for the cabin were transported by boat and carried by hand. The cabin's design is minimalist and functional, created as a secluded retreat with a focus on its natural surroundings. The brief from the client was for ""a room with a view of the sea,"" and the design delivers on this with two large windows framing the distinctive, windswept landscape of the ocean on one side and pine trees on the other. A large sliding glass door effectively doubles the living area when opened, blurring the line between indoors and outdoors. The cabin was constructed with minimal impact on the environment, raised off the ground to sit lightly on the plot. Its exterior features Swedish spruce, painted with a matte black finish, a color choice that references the vernacular architecture of local fishing cabins. The interior has a more natural feel, with Swedish spruce flooring and plywood-clad walls and ceilings. The pitched roof provides a generous internal volume, and the compact space includes a sauna and a living/bedroom area for two people. RESIDENTIAL | Annex | The Karaka Tower, designed by New Zealand-based ARÊTE Architects, is a nine-square-meter prefabricated timber annex that acts as a secluded extension to an existing 1970s home. Situated on a steep, heavily vegetated hillside in Eastbourne, Wellington, the tower provides a new bedroom and art studio for a growing family. The design is celebrated for its innovation in overcoming a difficult site and its intimate connection with the native bush. The project's architectural concept was heavily influenced by its challenging location, which was only accessible by foot. The modular construction and use of a helicopter to lift the prefabricated components onto the site in a single day minimized disruption to the neighbors and the delicate environment. Rooftop terrace: A roof garden sits atop the tower, providing a rare flat surface on the steep site and offering sweeping views of the harbor. The compact design features a mezzanine bedroom on the ground level, while an art studio occupies the top floor, with large sliding windows that provide stunning views of Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington Harbour). The 262 m2 residence balances traditional form with contemporary expression, integrating itself harmoniously with its surroundings through a thoughtful use of material and structure. The design is intrinsically shaped by the sloping terrain of the site. A partially underground basement, constructed from exposed concrete, anchors the home, providing a grounded counterpoint to the warm wooden structure above. This lower level accommodates practical spaces such as a large garage and service areas, as well as a more rustic "country-style room". The main living spaces are located on the upper floor, where the ceiling soars dramatically to the roof ridge, revealing the exposed timber frame and creating a sense of spaciousness. A sleeping area is also on this floor, with a gallery above it designed as a flexible and playful space for the owners' grandchildren. A key architectural element that bridges the new design with the regional building traditions is the covered porch, or gank, on the eastern side of the building. This external corridor connects the rooms on the ground floor, functioning as both a practical pathway and a symbolic link to the communal outdoor spaces of historic rural dwellings. This gesture, along with the prominently visible timber frame and the use of natural materials, ensures the new build feels both modern and deeply connected to its alpine setting. The interior of Hiša Š contrasts the rustic wooden structure with a clean, contemporary aesthetic. Modern furniture and materials are balanced with carefully chosen color accents and wallpaper. A notable feature is the suspended, rotating fireplace, which serves as a central point of life during colder months. In warmer weather, the living area can be extended outdoors onto a terrace and towards the pool area, which is cleverly shielded from the road by a green barrier. Through this project, Her arhitektura successfully delivered a home that respectfully nods to its heritage while providing a distinctly modern and functional space for its inhabitants.
