RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | EREMITAGE is a private cabin for meditation and exercise designed by the Swedish architectural firm 2bk arkitekter. Located in the Stockholm archipelago, this small building is a tranquil retreat set among rocky outcrops and blueberry bushes, right next to the sea. The project is a masterful combination of Nordic simplicity with intricate Japanese carpentry, resulting in a serene, nature-focused space for quiet contemplation. The architects' design for EREMITAGE was guided by the site's natural conditions, specifically the movement of light, the view toward the water, and an appreciation for Japanese carpentry. From a distance, the structure appears as a simple wooden cabin, blending into the surrounding landscape. Upon closer approach, however, its refined details become visible, revealing its identity as a finely crafted retreat resembling a Japanese teahouse. Exterior and materials The building's exterior is a blend of simple and sophisticated elements. The facade is clad in brown distemper-painted wood panels, a choice that helps the structure recede into the Nordic landscape. This contrasts with the delicate, sliding facade screens that reveal the interior, allowing the occupants to adjust the level of privacy and connection to the outdoors. The single row of slate stepping stones leading to the entrance further underscores the Japanese-inspired minimalist aesthetic. Interior and spatial experience The interior of EREMITAGE is designed to maximize a sense of tranquility and connection to nature. Japanese influence: The space incorporates traditional Japanese elements, such as tatami mats on the floor, and uses carefully crafted wooden elements. Minimalist palette: The materials used are predominantly wood, including untreated Douglas pine veneer for the walls and ceiling and thermo-treated ash for the floors. Dynamic light and shadow: The sliding facade screens create a shifting play of light and shadow within the interior, marking the passage of the day and enhancing the building's connection to its natural surroundings. Conceived as a hub for environmental education, the shelter was built in 2015 through an extraordinary community effort, involving 88 volunteers and donations from 88 suppliers. This unique collaborative process allowed for the creation of a piece of public architecture with minimal architectural resources. The shelter's design is inspired by the traditions of the picturesque, featuring an elegant, steel, and architectural fabric canopy that appears to float above three rough-hewn timber boxes. These boxes are strategically positioned to frame specific views of the surrounding hills and valley, creating a sense of dialogue between the built structure and the landscape. The structure's exterior is clad in Abodo's Tundra timber, which was donated for the project. Within the timber enclosures, visitors will find storage space, ablution facilities, and an office for the site ecologist. The simple, honest construction techniques contrast with the refined, floating canopy, creating a unique and timeless feel. A roof deck on one of the enclosures offers a stunning view of the valley and is accessed via a greenwood ladder made from a Manuka tree harvested from the site. In 2020, the project received national recognition, winning a New Zealand Architecture Award for Small Project Architecture. Completed in 2020, the 90-square-meter cabin was thoughtfully designed to minimize its impact on the natural environment and to foster a deep connection with the surrounding wild forest and water. The structure of Villa Rauhanniemi, a wood and glass building, is elevated on a platform that both provides stability and serves as a wraparound balcony, allowing the family to live as much outdoors as possible. The trees removed during construction were repurposed to create the outdoor benches. The buildings establish a strong engagement with the wider site, through a series of interior strategies and plan relationships that create unique and memorable experiences for guests. The compact massing of the exterior form belies a complex and surprising interior structure – heightened by the materiality of the rooms. Connections to the wider site are made to focus certain landscape qualities, which serve to background the occupation of the rooms. The sense of interiority is most strongly experienced in the most intimate parts of the plan, where detailing sets a relief for the seasonal inhabitation of the interiors. This 65 m² retreat, completed in 2020, replaces a dilapidated barn on a summer pasture 1,070 meters above sea level. The project's philosophy is rooted in a respect for the landscape and a commitment to self-sufficiency, creating a modern shelter that honors the area's pastoral heritage. The design concept for the Béllerine Cabin evolved from the idea of a primitive shelter centered around a fireplace. It also draws inspiration from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's "Terre des Hommes," which speaks to human connection with the land. The cabin's form retains the memory of the barn it replaced, utilizing the same footprint and volume to preserve its place within the landscape. The interior is conceived as a "cavern-like room" with a central fireplace that radiates heat. The substantial internal mass absorbs and stores this heat, also keeping the space cool during warmer summer months. Large windows frame the dramatic and ever-changing views of the Rhône valley and Lake Léman, allowing minimal furnishings to focus attention on the natural surroundings. The cabin is entirely self-sufficient, relying on wood from the surrounding forest for heating and an autonomous system for water and electricity. This 65 m² retreat, completed in 2020, replaces a dilapidated barn on a summer pasture 1,070 meters above sea level. The project's philosophy is rooted in a respect for the landscape and a commitment to self-sufficiency, creating a modern shelter that honors the area's pastoral heritage. The design concept for the Béllerine Cabin evolved from the idea of a primitive shelter centered around a fireplace. It also draws inspiration from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's "Terre des Hommes," which speaks to human connection with the land. The cabin's form retains the memory of the barn it replaced, utilizing the same footprint and volume to preserve its place within the landscape. The interior is conceived as a "cavern-like room" with a central fireplace that radiates heat. The substantial internal mass absorbs and stores this heat, also keeping the space cool during warmer summer months. Large windows frame the dramatic and ever-changing views of the Rhône valley and Lake Léman, allowing minimal furnishings to focus attention on the natural surroundings. The cabin is entirely self-sufficient, relying on wood from the surrounding forest for heating and an autonomous system for water and electricity. Cloux Architecture's commitment to local sourcing and natural materials is evident throughout the construction. The frame was fabricated and insulated off-site using wood fiber from just five miles away. The roof is covered with untreated European larch shingles, a durable material that has been used for centuries. The external and internal cladding is made of untreated, local spruce sourced from a nearby mill. All cement used in the project was produced less than ten miles from the site. The cabin's design is integrated with its environment through bioclimatic strategies. Trees like wild cherry and sycamore on the western side of the building provide solar gain in winter while offering crucial shade in the summer. This natural shade helped justify the inclusion of large openings during the permitting process. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Thunder Top Cabin is a unique extension designed by Gartnerfuglen Arkitekter for an existing family log cabin in the Hardangervidda mountain plateau of Norway, approximately 1,000 meters above sea level. Located in a barren moorland landscape of weather-beaten dwarf birches and heathers, the project was created for a multigenerational family to better accommodate holiday gatherings. Rather than mimicking the traditional log cabin, the architects opted for a contemporary timber-clad structure featuring a dramatic, stepped roof. This design is both a visual contrast to the older building and a clever functional element.
