HOTELS | Lodge | The Bergaliv Landscape Hotel, a project by architect Hanna Michelson, is a secluded, minimalist retreat in the foothills of the Åsberget mountains in Vallsta, northern Sweden. Completed in 2017, the hotel consists of a series of elevated wooden cabins designed to offer guests solitude and tranquility while minimizing their impact on the environment. Michelson, who also works for Tham & Videgård Arkitekter, was commissioned to create the cabins, which draw inspiration from traditional Swedish and Japanese design philosophies. The first cabin, known as Lofthuset ("the loft house"), was followed by the Söderloftet in 2021, and additional hideaways are planned. To reduce its visual impact and respect the landscape, each cabin is built on tall stilts that raise it above the ground and allow it to sway gently in the wind. SHELTERS | Prefabricated | The Bivacco Brédy is a high-altitude mountain shelter designed as a tribute to Claudio Brédy, a local politician and alpinist from Italy's Aosta Valley who tragically died in 2017. Designed by BCW Collective and inaugurated in 2021, the bivouac is set at an altitude of 2,528 meters in the secluded Vertosan Valley, near the alpine lakes of Dzioule. Its design is both functional and deeply symbolic, reflecting Brédy's spirit and connection to the mountains he loved. The project was initiated by the Brédy family and was the result of an invited competition organized by YACademy and Cantieri d’Alta Quota. COMMERCIAL | Office building | The Ilham Tower development brings together a variety of spaces for living and working in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, all within the compact footprint of a 58-storey, 275-metre-high tower – when complete, it will be one of the tallest mixed-use developments in the city. The challenge of designing such a significant new high-rise scheme was to relate to the large, urban scale, as well as in detail – close-up, the façade is rich and finely tuned to shade the interiors and to provide high-quality living spaces. The tower’s geometry is driven by the need for flexible, column-free spaces to accommodate its mixture of functions. Its form is equally shaped by the climate and urban context – the diamond-shaped plan increases the living spaces with views of key city landmarks and the facades tilt away from the morning and evening sun to reduce solar gain. Extending the public realm, the building is set back from the perimeter of the site and poised on a slender base to create a generous, tree-lined plaza that reaches into the atrium. The glazed facades are pulled back to shade the entrances and create an impressive arrival sequence. The tower also features huge, open sky gardens, which are up to 40 metres in height and have uninterrupted city views, made possible by the tower’s innovative, self-bracing diagrid structure. Office floors are located in the lower portion of the tower, centred on a dramatic three-storey atrium, and serviced apartments are above – at ground level, the two functions have individual entrance lobbies on either side of the building. At the very top of the tower are penthouses, oriented to face spectacular views of KL city centre. The stainless steel-clad structure, the geometry of the triangulated glass panels and the shading systems are all integrated to create a powerful, unified form. Following the profile of the structure, shading is provided by diagonal brise-soleil across each façade, oriented in response to the sun’s path to protect the interiors from solar heat gain, and glare is reduced by an opaque frit on the high-performance glazing. Snøhetta first significant commission was in 1989 for Bibliotheca Alexandrina, reviving the ancient library in Alexandria, Egypt. This was followed by commissions for the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in Oslo and the National September 11 Memorial Museum Pavilion at the World Trade Center in New York City. CULTURAL | Museum | Now the official museum of the German Armed Forces, the Dresden Museum of Military History has assumed varying and contradictory identities across its history. The building began its life as an armory, before becoming the Saxon Army Museum, followed by a stint as a Nazi military museum, then a Soviet and East German Museum. Uncertain of the institution’s role in the reunified state, the German government closed the museum and launched an international competition to redesign the structure. Studio Libeskind was selected as design architect for the extension in 2001, after presenting a bold design outside the competition guidelines. The Studio’s approach was that the museum must change its identity in order to achieve the institution’s vision. The unique challenge of this project was that the original brief required that the extension must not interfere with the historic façade. The design boldly interrupts the original building’s classical symmetry. The extension, a massive, five-story 14,500-ton wedge of glass, concrete, and steel, cuts into and through the former arsenal’s classical order. RESIDENTIAL | House | Designed by Slovenian architects Jana Hladnik Tratnik and Tina Lipovž of Studio PIKAPLUS, The Wooden House is an 82-square-meter family retreat completed in 2015. Situated in a forest clearing in Kanji Dol, Slovenia, the project was created for a young Slovenian family who, living in a big city in Italy, wanted a home that allowed them to be surrounded by nature. The design is a modern interpretation of the traditional mountain cabin, with exaggerated angles and oblique sides that give it a distinctive appearance while allowing it to blend into the surrounding landscape. Its simple form was intentionally created to minimize disruption to the environment and withstand the harsh Slovenian weather. The Wooden House's exterior is protected by durable, dark metal siding and thick insulation, which contrast with the light-wood interior. This warm, timber-clad interior offers a sense of being outdoors and helps blur the line between interior and exterior spaces. A large glass facade on one side of the house lets in ample natural light and provides expansive views of the forest and hills, connecting nearly every room to the natural surroundings. The layout maximizes the home's limited space with an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area on the ground floor. Two bedrooms and a play area are located on the second level and overlook the main living spaces. The house also features a sauna on the ground floor and minimalist furniture in dark tones that provides contrast to the light wood interior. A deck and minimal landscaping integrate the house into its surroundings. The project received second place nationally for the best wooden construction in Slovenia in 2016.
