HOTELS | Lodge | The Bergaliv Landscape Hotel, a project by architect Hanna Michelson, is a secluded, minimalist retreat in the foothills of the Åsberget mountains in Vallsta, northern Sweden. Completed in 2017, the hotel consists of a series of elevated wooden cabins designed to offer guests solitude and tranquility while minimizing their impact on the environment. Michelson, who also works for Tham & Videgård Arkitekter, was commissioned to create the cabins, which draw inspiration from traditional Swedish and Japanese design philosophies. The first cabin, known as Lofthuset ("the loft house"), was followed by the Söderloftet in 2021, and additional hideaways are planned. To reduce its visual impact and respect the landscape, each cabin is built on tall stilts that raise it above the ground and allow it to sway gently in the wind. This positioning gives guests a "high above the tree tops" view of the Ljusnan River valley below. The design is built around a concept of duality, with two contrasting spaces. The lower level of the 10-meter-tall structure is a compact, insulated space housing a combined living and sleeping area. This level features a wooden bench for resting and futon mattresses that can be hung on the wall to maximize space. Above, the upper level is an open-air deck with a gabled pinewood roof, offering uninterrupted views of the surrounding scenery and functioning as a peaceful vantage point. The cabins are constructed using a palette of natural materials. The exterior is clad in heart-pine and spruce wood, allowing the structures to blend into the forest, while the interior features pale birch plywood and ash. Following Nordic building traditions, the walls are insulated with flax fibers. With their minimalist and raw interiors, the cabins are designed to remove unnecessary noise and focus attention on the expansive natural landscape. Completed in 2021, the small getaway cabin is located on a rock ledge on Åsberget mountain and offers a spectacular vista over the Ljusnan river valley. The name, meaning "South Loft," reflects its positioning. The structure is raised on slender pillars, a design choice that makes it appear to float among the surrounding treetops and balances the expansive landscape with a fine-tuned connection to the nearby forest. The 20-square-meter cabin consists of two main parts: a closed, heated living area and a large, open-air veranda that includes a covered viewing platform. The sheltered space features an extensive ceiling height of 4.5 meters, which provides an airy ambiance and allows for a smaller sleeping loft above the main living area. Inside, the design marries Nordic minimalism with Japanese-inspired aesthetics, using clean lines and light woods such as birch, fir, and heart pine. The flexible layout and minimal furnishings serve to emphasize the views of nature. A low wooden platform, for instance, can function as seating, a bed, or a space for yoga. To maximize its connection with the surrounding environment, the cabin's construction avoids plastics, and the walls and roof are insulated with flax fibers, a nod to traditional Nordic building methods. The Söderloftet stands as a serene and unobtrusive retreat, designed to help visitors escape a hectic life and find tranquility in nature. • Tiny House of Slow Town | The Plus Partners, DNC Architects | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Tiny Home | Located in Gangwon Province, South Korea, the Tiny House of Slow Town was designed by The Plus Partners and DNC Architects and completed in 2016. The 19.8-square-meter cabin was part of a broader project to provide additional housing for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, with a focus on sustainable construction and a minimal footprint in a pristine natural setting. The exterior is defined by a black sheet metal cladding and a hipped roof, with large windows creating a dynamic contrast with the sunlight. This dark and angular form sets it apart from its surroundings while its small scale keeps the environmental impact low. The interior maximizes its small area by creating a double-height volume and utilizing a minimalist, fully wooden finish. A steep staircase doubles as a storage space, leading to a garret that houses a large bed. The simple interior features built-in elements, including a kitchen and bathroom. The interior is painted in a warm yellow, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The combination of a large bed in the loft, a built-in kitchen, and a small bathroom provides all the necessary amenities within a compact and efficient layout. • Bivacco Brédy | BCW Collective | ZHIG

SHELTERS | Prefabricated | The Bivacco Brédy is a high-altitude mountain shelter designed as a tribute to Claudio Brédy, a local politician and alpinist from Italy's Aosta Valley who tragically died in 2017. Designed by BCW Collective and inaugurated in 2021, the bivouac is set at an altitude of 2,528 meters in the secluded Vertosan Valley, near the alpine lakes of Dzioule. Its design is both functional and deeply symbolic, reflecting Brédy's spirit and connection to the mountains he loved. The project was initiated by the Brédy family and was the result of an invited competition organized by YACademy and Cantieri d’Alta Quota. The winning proposal by BCW Collective was chosen for its ability to poetically and practically interpret the rugged mountain landscape and honor Brédy's memory. The cantilevered structure, which appears to launch into the void, is a poignant architectural gesture that evokes the loss of a cherished member of the community. Positioned on a rock slab, the shelter serves as a new landmark in the Vertosan Valley. The bivouac is designed for both introspection and an immersive experience of the surrounding mountains. The south-facing shelter is strategically oriented to frame dramatic views of peaks like the Grivola and Gran Paradiso, a summit Brédy had climbed. The minimalist interior focuses occupants on the landscape outside. The 12 m² interior is functional and warm, clad in wood panels. Six bunks made from climbing cord line the sides, leading to a common area with a large window. A vestibule provides space for gear storage. The cabin features a solar panel to charge mobile devices, allowing for an off-grid experience. The bivouac was prefabricated in modules to minimize its environmental impact and facilitate transport to the remote location. The structure was built in three parts, which were then delivered by helicopter and assembled on-site in a matter of days. A steel frame foundation secures the structure directly to the rock, ensuring minimal disruption to the landscape. This frame supports insulated timber panels. The exterior is covered in dark, aluminum cladding selected for its durability and resistance to harsh weather conditions. • Ilham Tower | Foster + Partners | ZHIG

COMMERCIAL | Office building | The Ilham Tower development brings together a variety of spaces for living and working in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, all within the compact footprint of a 58-storey, 275-metre-high tower – when complete, it will be one of the tallest mixed-use developments in the city. The challenge of designing such a significant new high-rise scheme was to relate to the large, urban scale, as well as in detail – close-up, the façade is rich and finely tuned to shade the interiors and to provide high-quality living spaces. The tower’s geometry is driven by the need for flexible, column-free spaces to accommodate its mixture of functions. Its form is equally shaped by the climate and urban context – the diamond-shaped plan increases the living spaces with views of key city landmarks and the facades tilt away from the morning and evening sun to reduce solar gain. Extending the public realm, the building is set back from the perimeter of the site and poised on a slender base to create a generous, tree-lined plaza that reaches into the atrium. The glazed facades are pulled back to shade the entrances and create an impressive arrival sequence. The tower also features huge, open sky gardens, which are up to 40 metres in height and have uninterrupted city views, made possible by the tower’s innovative, self-bracing diagrid structure. Office floors are located in the lower portion of the tower, centred on a dramatic three-storey atrium, and serviced apartments are above – at ground level, the two functions have individual entrance lobbies on either side of the building. At the very top of the tower are penthouses, oriented to face spectacular views of KL city centre. The stainless steel-clad structure, the geometry of the triangulated glass panels and the shading systems are all integrated to create a powerful, unified form. Following the profile of the structure, shading is provided by diagonal brise-soleil across each façade, oriented in response to the sun’s path to protect the interiors from solar heat gain, and glare is reduced by an opaque frit on the high-performance glazing. The structural solution also minimises the material required for construction and therefore the building’s embedded energy, contributing to the project’s target BCA Green Mark Gold Plus rating. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/9756fd_180d1e1534894113b71c70301af867cb~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_2000,h_1124,al_c,q_90/Ilham%20Tower%20(4).jfif 1/0 Private Public Pin Pin 0 x Appreciators 0 3D models Product 5.6K Views 0 Appreciated Appreciate Please login to appreciate Ilham Tower Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia fosterandpartners.com Source: Published on Oct 1, 2023 by: Photographer Anna Salonen Premium Member More Buildings from Malaysia Facts: Up Up Architecture Office Foster + Partners United Kingdom Category: COMMERCIAL Office building Project Type: Post Type: Building Country: Malaysia Photographers: Architects: Foster + Partners Area: 92,000 m2 Year: 2015 City: Kuala Lumpur Construction: Client Ilham Baru Sdn Bhd Description: the architects Text description by The Ilham Tower development brings together a variety of spaces for living and working in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, all within the compact footprint of a 58-storey, 275-metre-high tower – when complete, it will be one of the tallest mixed-use developments in the city. We share our name with a beautiful, remote, and historically important mountain in central Norway. Snøhetta is a place nobody is from, but anyone can experience. Creating places for societies to connect with each other and with the world around them is a primary motivation in our work. Dialogue and diversity empower this approach. Snøhetta first significant commission was in 1989 for Bibliotheca Alexandrina, reviving the ancient library in Alexandria, Egypt. This was followed by commissions for the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in Oslo and the National September 11 Memorial Museum Pavilion at the World Trade Center in New York City. Since those early projects, many other internationally acclaimed works have been realized around the globe. source: snohetta.com Category Cultural center Post Type Building Project Type CULTURAL Country Saudi Arabia Year 2018 Area 350 000 m² Client Saudi Aramco Photographers Abdullah A Alshammary, AAS, Ivan Brodey www.zhiig.com Premium Member CG Artist Andrew L Collaborate 3D Design Suggest Materials Suggest Product Add Request Design © ZHIG Team Materials Suggested by Manufacturers: Model Full Name Details Details View more

  • Military history museum | Daniel Libeskind Studio | ZHIG

CULTURAL | Museum | Now the official museum of the German Armed Forces, the Dresden Museum of Military History has assumed varying and contradictory identities across its history. The building began its life as an armory, before becoming the Saxon Army Museum, followed by a stint as a Nazi military museum, then a Soviet and East German Museum. Uncertain of the institution’s role in the reunified state, the German government closed the museum and launched an international competition to redesign the structure. Studio Libeskind was selected as design architect for the extension in 2001, after presenting a bold design outside the competition guidelines. The Studio’s approach was that the museum must change its identity in order to achieve the institution’s vision. The unique challenge of this project was that the original brief required that the extension must not interfere with the historic façade. The design boldly interrupts the original building’s classical symmetry. The extension, a massive, five-story 14,500-ton wedge of glass, concrete, and steel, cuts into and through the former arsenal’s classical order. An 82-foot high viewing platform (the highest point of the wedge is at 98 feet) provides breathtaking views of modern Dresden, while pointing towards the triangulation of the area where the fire bombing began in Dresden, creating a space for reflection. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/9756fd_1dd8dc6af29f4199b07d2fdfbb1ab2a0~mv2.webp 1/0 Private Public Pin Pin 0 x Appreciators 0 3D models Product 6.3K Views 0 Appreciated Appreciate Please login to appreciate Military history museum Olbrichtpl. 2, 01099 Dresden, Germany www.libeskind.com Source: Published on Sep 27, 2023 by: CG artist Carl Hecht Premium Member More Buildings from Germany Facts: Up Up Architecture Office Daniel Libeskind Studio United States Category: CULTURAL Museum Project Type: Post Type: Building Country: Germany Photographers: Architects: Daniel Libeskind Studio Area: 14,000 m2 Year: 2011 City: Dresden Construction: - Client The Federal Republic of Germany – Ministry of Defense Description: the architects Text description by Now the official museum of the German Armed Forces, the Dresden Museum of Military History has assumed varying and contradictory identities across its history. Our Studio is a collaboration of architects and designers that believe architecture is a practice of optimism. We approach our projects with the attitude that to make great places, you must believe in the future, but also remember the past. Studio Libeskind’s architecture emerges from the idea that a building should be expressive and reflect contemporary life. Innovation is at the core of our design process. We believe that bold design must be realized with sustainable technology and we strongly believe that the art of architecture lies in creating a maximum impact within the constraints of budgets and functionality. We know from experience that great architecture comes from working with great clients; however, architecture is a public art and we hold ourselves accountable not only to the client, but to the communities, and cities in which we build. Daniel and his partner Nina Libeskind established Studio Daniel Libeskind in Berlin, Germany, in 1989 after winning the competition to build the Jewish Museum Berlin. In February 2003, Studio Daniel Libeskind moved its headquarters from Berlin to New York City when Daniel Libeskind was selected as the master planner for the World Trade Center redevelopment. source: libeskind.com Category Museum Post Type Building Project Type CULTURAL Country Germany Year 2011 Area 14,000 m2 Client The Federal Republic of Germany – Ministry of Defense Photographers www.zhiig.com Premium Member CG artist Carl Hecht Collaborate 3D Design Suggest Materials Suggest Product Add Request Design © ZHIG Team Materials Suggested by Manufacturers: Model Full Name Details Details View more

  • The Wooden House | studio PIKAPLUS | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | House | Designed by Slovenian architects Jana Hladnik Tratnik and Tina Lipovž of Studio PIKAPLUS, The Wooden House is an 82-square-meter family retreat completed in 2015. Situated in a forest clearing in Kanji Dol, Slovenia, the project was created for a young Slovenian family who, living in a big city in Italy, wanted a home that allowed them to be surrounded by nature. The design is a modern interpretation of the traditional mountain cabin, with exaggerated angles and oblique sides that give it a distinctive appearance while allowing it to blend into the surrounding landscape. Its simple form was intentionally created to minimize disruption to the environment and withstand the harsh Slovenian weather. The Wooden House's exterior is protected by durable, dark metal siding and thick insulation, which contrast with the light-wood interior. This warm, timber-clad interior offers a sense of being outdoors and helps blur the line between interior and exterior spaces. A large glass facade on one side of the house lets in ample natural light and provides expansive views of the forest and hills, connecting nearly every room to the natural surroundings. The layout maximizes the home's limited space with an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area on the ground floor. Two bedrooms and a play area are located on the second level and overlook the main living spaces. The house also features a sauna on the ground floor and minimalist furniture in dark tones that provides contrast to the light wood interior. A deck and minimal landscaping integrate the house into its surroundings. The project received second place nationally for the best wooden construction in Slovenia in 2016.
