This off-grid home combines functionality with aesthetic charm through the seamless integration of natural materials. The structure encompasses an area of 18 m² (194 ft²), with an additional 12 m² (129 ft²) dedicated to a separate bathroom. The main building features a cozy loft bedroom situated above the living room. The kitchen is crafted from parota wood and adorned with artisanal Mexican tiles, while the flooring is made of lime, ensuring a sustainable approach. The house is constructed primarily from adobe, complemented by a traditional three-coat lime plaster on the exterior and a special Oaxacan clay finish on the interior. All materials were selected to minimize environmental impact, with no cement used in the construction apart from the stone foundation sourced from local rocks. This bespoke micro-cabin, with a 29 m² (312 ft²) interior and a 12 m² (129 ft²) wood-decked terrace, serves as a retreat focused on slow living, environmental integration, and structural autonomy. The design process began with a collection of reclaimed materials, including old glass panels, windows, and doors, which influenced the architectural layout and character of the cabin. The owners, a cabinetmaker and an interior designer, utilized these elements to create a home that reflects a resource-conscious approach to construction. Una Nevera Azul operates independently from conventional energy sources, utilizing solar power and low-consumption systems. Heating is provided by a wood-burning stove, with gas used for cooking and hot water. The architectural design dissolves the boundary between the interior and the rugged mountain landscape, featuring expansive window apertures that capture panoramic views and maximize natural light. The creators employed advanced digital and physical drafting techniques to optimize the cabin's orientation for solar heat gain and natural lighting. Each suite is meticulously handcrafted and fully furnished, constructed entirely from recycled cross-laminated timber (X-LAM). The architectural concept revolves around a collection of independent structures that seamlessly blend into the rural landscape. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Architect Cyril Chênebeau created the "Two Cabins On Stilts" (Les Cabanes Perchées) in Saint-Martin-Vésubie, France, near the Mercantour National Park, as immersive, all-season getaways. Completed in 2022, the project consists of two identical, nine-sided cabin volumes elevated on V-shaped larch stilts. The design balances a traditional gabled cabin form with a contemporary, "perched" habitat that minimizes its footprint on the forested site. Each cabin is shaped as a nine-sided prism with a double-sided gabled roof. The interior is spacious, with generous ceiling heights that follow the roofline. Large windows and strategically placed openings frame views of the surrounding larch forest, filtering light into the interior throughout the day. The living area is organized around a central hearth, with a visible and connected spa area that is also accessible from the large south-facing terrace. This provides a unique alpine experience for guests. The cabins are clad in dark, charred wood cladding, which echoes the color of the larch tree bark and helps the structures blend into their environment. The cabins are supported by a unique, three-dimensional wooden post structure made of stripped larch poles. The V-shaped posts evoke leaning tree trunks and reinforce the "perched" visual effect. This light-colored structural wood is left exposed to create a visual contrast with the dark facade. Completed in 2022, the project consists of two identical, nine-sided cabin volumes elevated on V-shaped larch stilts. The design balances a traditional gabled cabin form with a contemporary, "perched" habitat that minimizes its footprint on the forested site. Each cabin is shaped as a nine-sided prism with a double-sided gabled roof. The interior is spacious, with generous ceiling heights that follow the roofline. Large windows and strategically placed openings frame views of the surrounding larch forest, filtering light into the interior throughout the day. The living area is organized around a central hearth, with a visible and connected spa area that is also accessible from the large south-facing terrace. This provides a unique alpine experience for guests. The cabins are clad in dark, charred wood cladding, which echoes the color of the larch tree bark and helps the structures blend into their environment. The cabins are supported by a unique, three-dimensional wooden post structure made of stripped larch poles. The V-shaped posts evoke leaning tree trunks and reinforce the "perched" visual effect. This light-colored structural wood is left exposed to create a visual contrast with the dark facade. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Located in a rainforest near the city of La Unión in southern Chile, the 3x3 Retreat is a 15-square-meter minimalist cabin designed by Estudio Diagonal. Completed in 2020, the small house is named for its 3-by-3-meter floor plan, which emphasizes a "radical geometry" in contrast with the organic nature of its surroundings. The retreat was strategically placed on a slope overlooking the Radimadi river, providing inhabitants with picturesque views and the calming sound of the running water. The cabin's program is structured in what the architects describe as "three acts". The journey begins on the ground-level terrace, which is the same size as the cabin itself, and serves as an intermediary space between the forest and the interior. The first floor, or "day floor," contains a combined kitchen, dining, and living area. Completed in 2020, the project integrates modular, prefabricated structures into the forest environment to provide guests with a unique retreat close to nature. The design for the shelters was based on the hotel's request for single-sided, double cabins dispersed throughout the forest surrounding the main building. The cabins are elevated on stilts, minimizing contact with the ground and allowing the landscape to flow continuously underneath. This approach avoided disturbing the natural terrain and the growth of tree roots. The shelters were carefully placed between existing trees, rather than clearing the forest, to ensure both privacy for guests and preservation of the natural surroundings. Each cabin is oriented to face away from others and towards an undisturbed view of either the forest or the nearby ski slope through large, floor-to-ceiling windows. Each cottage is made of two independent modules, functioning as separate apartments. A sliding partition wall allows for the living rooms to connect, creating a single larger space for families or larger groups. The exterior is clad in black-painted spruce to blend with the dark tones of the surrounding forest. The interiors feature light, minimalist materials, including spruce panels and oak floors, to create a warm and cozy atmosphere. Accommodation and wellness facilities The project includes eleven guest shelters and a wellness area. Each cottage is made of two independent modules, functioning as separate apartments. A sliding partition wall allows for the living rooms to connect, creating a single larger space for families or larger groups. The exterior is clad in black-painted spruce to blend with the dark tones of the surrounding forest. The interiors feature light, minimalist materials, including spruce panels and oak floors, to create a warm and cozy atmosphere. Accommodation and wellness facilities The project includes eleven guest shelters and a wellness area. Guest cabins: Each of the 75-square-meter cottages is fully furnished and contains two independent apartments, with each apartment comprising a bedroom/living room, children's room, entrance hall, and bathroom. Wellness modules: The retreat also features a wellness facility consisting of four Ark-shelter modules configured to create saunas, relaxation rooms, and massage rooms for guests. CAMPING | Cabin | Territoire Charlevoix is a unique eco-tourism project located in the Canadian wilderness of Quebec, between La Malbaie and Baie-Saint-Paul. Designed by Montreal-based architecture firm Atelier l'Abri and completed in 2022, the project consists of several minimalist cabins and communal structures spread across a rugged landscape. INFRASTRUCTURE | Airport | Queen Alia International Airport continues the practice’s explorations of the airport terminal as a building type and sets out a vision for an environmentally sensitive, regionally apt, airport architecture. Designed to serve as the main gateway to Amman – one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world – its design resonates with a sense of place and local culture. Strategically the building secures Amman’s position as the main hub for the Levant Region. Logistically, it allows the airport to grow by 6 per cent per annum for the next twenty-five years, increasing capacity from 3 million to 16 million passengers per annum by 2030. In response to local building expertise and Amman’s climate, where summer temperatures vary markedly between daytime and night time the building is constructed entirely from concrete, the high thermal mass of the material providing passive environmental control. The tessellated roof canopy comprises a series of shallow concrete domes, which extend to shade the facades. To enable seamless future expansion, each dome is a modular unit. The domes branch out from the supporting columns like the leaves of a desert palm and daylight floods the concourse through split beams at the column junctions. Echoing the veins of a leaf, a geometric pattern based on traditional Islamic forms is applied to each exposed soffit. The terminal is glazed on all sides to open up long views to the aircraft on the apron and aid orientation. Two piers of departure gates run along either side of the central building, which contains the main processing areas and shops, lounges and restaurants. Between these volumes, open-air courtyards draw on vernacular Arabic architecture and contribute to the terminal’s environmental strategy: the plants and trees help to filter pollution and pre-condition the air before it is drawn into the air handling system.
