    SHELTERS | Cabin | Nestled in the woods of Blountville, Tennessee, Perch 2.0 by Mike Stone Architect is a 415-square-foot oak shelter that emphasizes a hands-on, immersive approach to architecture. The project, conceived in 2017 when the architect acquired a large quantity of rough-sawn white oak lumber, was built over three years and was heavily influenced by the process of its own creation.     OFF-GRID ACCOMMODATION | Cabin | The Pod[e] Mulla Mulla is a luxurious, off-grid holiday cabin designed by A-HA Design Studio in collaboration with Scott Taylor, co-founder of the Pod[e] brand. Located on 300 acres of coastal bushland on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, the prototype combines high-end comfort with eco-conscious features to minimize its environmental footprint. The design process was deeply rooted in the site's unique characteristics. The design team camped on the coastal bushland to understand the site's essence, topography, prevailing winds, vistas, and soundscapes. The cabin's bold and distinct exterior changes color throughout the day with the shifting rhythms of the light. It features prismatic and champagne-colored panels, along with a mirrored skirt, which creates a captivating visual effect. Material palette: The interior and exterior material choices reference the native flora of the region, the Ironstone Mulla Mulla, a compact native plant with light, feathery blooms endemic to the Eyre Peninsula. The interior features a palette of soft pinks, natural timber, and brushed stainless steel. Dimensions: The cabin has a modest footprint, measuring 12 by 5 meters, with an additional 50 square meters of decking. Open and connected interior: Despite its small size, the design aims to maximize a sense of openness and connection to the landscape. Sustainability The cabin is self-sufficient and operates entirely off-grid. It is powered by solar panels. It is equipped with a rainwater catchment and filtration system. The design uses natural ventilation and strategically placed windows and doors to create a comfortable internal climate.   • Lightbox | Bohlin Cywinski Jackson | ZHIG

    RESIDENTIAL | House | The Lightbox is a 1,650-square-foot home and studio designed by Seattle-based architecture firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. Completed in 2015, the residence is nestled in a dense, coastal woodland on a peninsula south of British Columbia in Washington state. Designed for a photographer and his young family, the home is a celebration of light, shadows, and its tranquil forest setting. The house was created with a special appreciation for simplicity and well-crafted details, reflecting the photographer-owner's eye for light and composition. The core of the design is the juxtaposition of two contrasting volumes that are "zipped" together. A "glass cage" for living: A two-story, south-facing volume, enclosed in glass, serves as the main living space. This transparent section allows sunlight to filter through the trees, constantly changing throughout the day. A solid "black box" for privacy: The northern volume is a solid box, stained black with a traditional Finnish pine tar coating. This volume contains the stairs and other private areas, with narrow apertures that frame specific views of the old-growth Douglas firs and cedars. The house sits lightly on the land, accessed by a sloped boardwalk that crosses over the forest floor. The building's skin uses simple, affordable materials in a straightforward yet innovative way. An exposed wood structural frame supports a prefabricated, uniformly-sized aluminum window system to keep costs low. The interior further reinforces the connection to nature and the simple, robust design philosophy. Mezzanine level: Above the double-height living room, a mezzanine offers additional space while maintaining an open feel. The floors are polished concrete on the lower level and exposed wood car decking upstairs. Shelving is crafted from resawn timbers, and the interior uses wood slats to screen areas, a detail inspired by Japanese design. Hydronic radiant heat and antique cast-iron radiators efficiently keep the space warm, supplemented by a centrally located fireplace.     RESIDENTIAL | House | Completed in 2022 in Oaxaca, Mexico, the Plúmula Workshop House is a 70-square-meter project by Espacio 18 Arquitectura that breathes new life into a dilapidated residence to create a functional and poetic live-work space for an artist. The project's name, Plúmula, which refers to the embryonic shoot of a plant, reflects the design's focus on new growth and revitalization. A central aspect of the design is the preservation of pre-existing adobe walls, honoring the building's history, while a lightweight steel framework is integrated to reinforce the structure and expand the space. The house was commissioned by Amy García Kennedy, a plastic artist who works abroad and wanted a retreat in her home country. The project's name, Plúmula, which refers to the embryonic shoot of a plant, reflects the design's focus on new growth and revitalization. A central aspect of the design is the preservation of pre-existing adobe walls, honoring the building's history, while a lightweight steel framework is integrated to reinforce the structure and expand the space. The house was commissioned by Amy García Kennedy, a plastic artist who works abroad and wanted a retreat in her home country. At the heart of the design is a magnificent Flamboyán tree, which the architects made the focal point of the property, with key views from the workshop, meeting space, and bedroom all centered on its contemplation. The layout was designed for practicality and warmth, utilizing a sensitive monochrome palette that visually enlarges the interiors. This is achieved through the use of budget-friendly, locally sourced materials such as steel, adobe, pine wood, and red brick. These materials also create a dialogue between the old and new, and their familiarity to local craftsmen facilitated the construction process. The project employs several sustainable strategies. The existing adobe walls offer natural thermal mass, keeping the home cool during the hot Oaxacan summers and warm in the winters. The house also incorporates a solar water heater and a rainwater harvesting system with filters, while LED lighting was chosen for energy efficiency. Tall sliding windows blur the boundaries between the indoors and the surrounding lush environment, inviting natural light and ventilation and reinforcing the visual connection to the Flamboyán tree. Plúmula Workshop House is a project that responds thoughtfully to its context, integrating into the local neighborhood while offering a tranquil and inspiring sanctuary for its inhabitant.     RESIDENTIAL | Cottage | The Taieri Mouth Bach is a modern reinterpretation of the traditional, simple holiday cottage, or "bach," built by architect Regan Johnston for his family while he was working at Mason & Wales Architects. Located on a sand dune near a fishing village at the mouth of the Taieri River on New Zealand's South Island, the project was completed in 2013 and took only eight weeks to build. The modest 55-square-meter dwelling was designed with a simple gabled form and honest, natural, and robust materials, paying homage to the original, often handmade, fishing huts and baches of the area. The bach's straightforward and economical construction is balanced by a striking, fully-glazed end wall that offers expansive views of the surrounding dune, Moturata Island, and Taieri Beach. To minimize view obstruction while ensuring the structure's stability against high winds and earthquakes, the glazed gable end is reinforced with a system of steel tension rods arranged in an X pattern. An open-plan living area occupies most of the ground floor, featuring a vaulted ceiling that rises to the roof ridge. Another wall with large sliding glass doors opens the living space to a timber patio on the sunny north side. The kitchen, bathroom, laundry, and storage areas are located at the back of the house. The project has been praised for its simplicity, charm, and unquestionable sustainability, with minimal waste during design and construction. It was a recipient of a NZIA Residential Award and a Supreme Timber Building Award at the 2013 New Zealand Wood Awards. The building has a simple mission - to provide a covered refuge while staying in the garden with the possibility of emergency sleep. The owners spend the maximum time outside, to which the building responds with its tilting wall, thanks to which it becomes a kind of garden loggia - an open gazebo and thus expands its covered space outwards. The cottage is not connected to any networks, it has only one photovoltaic panel on the roof.     HOSPITALITY | Mixed-use | Anchoring the new Emaar Square development, the 48-storey mixed-use tower is conceived as a new civic landmark and beacon for the district. The design combines luxury and urban lifestyles, creating an exciting new destination, with a hotel, spa and restaurant, on the Asian side of Istanbul. The scheme serves residents, hotel guests and the those living in, or visiting, the surrounding area. The first nine levels of the tower contain a five-star hotel. Luxury residences are located above, ranging in size from a large one-bedroom apartment to a five-bedroom duplex penthouse. Two spectacular amenity floors provide private relaxation rooms, a steam room, sauna, and an expansive heated spa pool with panoramic view of the city. The Spa offers bespoke, traditional, and innovative treatments for guests and residents. The hotel’s elegant Grand Ballroom has the capacity to seat up to 800 people and can be divided into three individual spaces. Crowning the tower is the unique Skyview viewing gallery and terrace, where guests can dine and unwind while overlooking the Bosporus strait, watching life go by between two continents – Europe and Asia. The massing of the tower is split into three slender volumes, accentuating the verticality of the building, while providing each floor with a wider outlook. This allows many units to offer multiple double aspect rooms with exclusive views across the city. The Address achieves LEED Gold Certification through substantial eco-friendly and green initiatives that ensure environmental sustainability and guest wellbeing. Underground car parks, electric vehicle charging stations and reserved parking spaces for low emission vehicles reduce carbon emissions. Efficient water flow and flush fixtures across the hotel save 20 percent of indoor water consumption. 50 percent of the landscape irrigation is reduced by incorporating local and adapted plants that consume less water. Recycled and regional materials are widely used, with more than 75 percent of the construction waste being recycled.     RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The VR Cabin is a vacation refuge designed by Mexico City-based firm CRB Arquitectos. Completed in 2021, the 90 m² project is located in the forested area of Avándaro in Valle de Bravo, Mexico. The cabin was conceived as a space for its users to disconnect from city life and reconnect with the surrounding nature, with a design that emphasizes warmth, simplicity, and a seamless coexistence between the cabin and the forest. The core concept of the VR Cabin is to offer a serene escape where the user can fully experience the tranquility of their forested environment. This connection is achieved through a deliberate design approach: The cabin's exterior is a simple, solid block, which ensures the natural landscape remains the focal point. In contrast, the interior is richly lined with wood to create a warm and cozy atmosphere. The design blurs the line between indoor and outdoor spaces through a series of thoughtful connections. A large front terrace allows occupants to immerse themselves in the surrounding greenery, while the private area features a bathroom and dressing room that open directly to the outdoors.
