The project, completed in 2019, was conceptualized as a temporary structure that could one day disappear, underscoring the impermanent nature of occupying the forest. Its unique aesthetic was inspired by the idea of "the vegetal," with the materials chosen to represent natural elements: wood for the trees, a mesh for the leaves, and polycarbonate for the forest's light. Constructed with a prefabricated, CNC-cut laminated Chilean pinewood frame, the cabin was assembled on-site to reduce construction time and waste. Resting on a cantilevered platform supported by stilts, it minimizes its environmental impact on the sloping terrain and surrounding flora. A wooden pathway snakes through the woods to the cabin's entrance, while the deck wraps around a tree, creating a deep connection between the inhabitant and the environment. The exterior is defined by a multi-layered skin. The inner layer is a clear, flexible polycarbonate that provides transparency and protection from rain, while the outer layer is a golden-hued textile mesh. During the day, the mesh filters light to create a warm, golden glow inside, echoing the changing leaves in autumn. At night, the cabin becomes a glowing lantern, illuminating the forest. The transparent facade plays with the idea of impermanence by reflecting the forest's shadows and movements on its skin. Inside, the compact cabin is organized vertically across three levels. The ground floor features a living area with a wood-burning stove, a small bathroom, and a bedroom with glass doors that open onto the terrace. A ladder leads to the upper two floors, which are fitted with cushions to create cozy relaxation areas with panoramic forest views. The project is a reinterpretation of a dilapidated old building, carefully drafted to align with the passions of its owner. The structure is designed as a sanctuary for recreation, meditation, and personal development, offering a place for its owner to find balance and reconnect with nature. The design of Tom's Hut focuses on simplicity and a deep connection to its environment. The cabin features an angular shape that encloses a two-level space and is constructed entirely of wood, with an untreated larch exterior that helps the small structure blend seamlessly into its forest setting. One of its unique features is the ability to be firmly closed on all sides with wooden shutters, or to have its windows opened to provide varying views of the surrounding wilderness. The interior space, which some have described as ""chapel-like,"" is reduced to the bare minimum, providing only the essentials for a contemplative life. The off-grid nature of the cabin is a core aspect of its design. It deliberately eschews modern amenities like electricity, relying on a single water fountain, an indoor fireplace, an outdoor fire pit, and a stove for cooking and heating. This intentional rusticity provides an escape from modern conveniences and reinforces the project's purpose as a back-to-basics retreat. The thoughtful connection between the interior and the outdoors is emphasized by large openings at the front and back of the hut, visually and physically linking the living space to the surrounding nature. Perched on a granite ridge in a high-latitude pine forest, the cabin was built as a guest cabin and owner's retreat for an engineer who wanted to host his extended family and reconnect with the natural landscape. The design is a modern take on the traditional Finnish log cabin, blending traditional forms with contemporary details and focusing on natural light and open space. To minimize the impact on the site, which included a delicate landscape on a narrow ridge, the cabin's logs and window assemblies were prefabricated off-site and lifted into place by a crane. Built on post foundations, the cabin combines the traditional gable roof and log walls of Finnish cabins with unexpected details, volume, and quality of light. Locally sourced materials were used to complete the project on a limited budget. The exterior is protected from the elements by vertical pine screening treated with iron oxide, which accelerates the natural graying of the wood. The interior, in contrast, features untreated pine log walls and bare roof rafters, creating a warm and rustic aesthetic. The layout includes a double-height living room with oversized operable windows on the north and south sides that frame panoramic views of the forest and Lake Saimaa, blending the indoors with the outdoors. A whimsical, treehouse-like loft provides a cozy retreat, and two generous bedrooms bookend the living space. Designed as a prototype for a new resort project, the lodge is intended for adventure lovers, offering ski-in/ski-out and bike-in/bike-out access. The project emphasizes a strong connection to nature and a flexible, space-efficient living experience, inspired by the "van life" movement. The Go-Box design philosophy revolves around offering portable, prefab structures that can be combined and customized. For Cécile Lodge, the clients needed a small space with large floor-to-ceiling windows to invite the outdoors in. The result is a highly functional interior that incorporates movable, built-in furniture, reminiscent of a game of Tetris. A key feature is the convertible living area, which uses a pull-out bed to transform the main space into a large bedroom at night, suitable for a couple with two children. The interior boasts a simple aesthetic with finishes made from either Russian ply or pine. A small kitchenette is integrated into the layout, featuring a gas stove, kitchen accessories, and a mini-fridge. A full bathroom with a toilet and shower is also included. Outside, the lodge is finished with a low-maintenance steel exterior and a cedar or pine terrace, while inside, comfort is ensured with insulation and the option for a heat pump and heated floors. Located in the forest with mountain views, Cécile Lodge is off-grid but is equipped with a well and septic system. It serves as a retreat for those who wish to disconnect from daily life, refuel their energy, and immerse themselves in the surrounding natural environment.
