Smith, the Writer's Studio is a contemporary, off-grid sanctuary nestled on a forested property in Connecticut. Inspired by Henry David Thoreau's Walden, the peaceful retreat was created for a former Wall Street executive and lifelong poet seeking a quiet, secluded place for reflection and creativity. The studio’s striking design uses a blend of natural materials to create a modern cabin that harmonizes with its surroundings. The architecture of the Writer's Studio showcases a masterful use of contrasting elements: rugged stone with refined glass and a cantilevered structure that creates a sense of floating above the landscape. The outer walls are constructed from irregular fieldstone and bluestone, echoing the dry-stacked stone walls found throughout historic New England. The fieldstone gives the impression of repurposed ruins, while a robust steel structure within provides modern stability and insulation. A glass-walled writing room dramatically cantilevers over a rocky ravine, providing a dynamic connection to nature. Inside, the studio is a cozy and functional space. Fumed oak planks are used for the floors and ceilings, adding warmth and texture. Built-in oak shelving provides ample storage for the owner’s extensive collection of 1,700 volumes of poetry and conceals a trundle bed for guests. The writing desk faces the large glass wall, ensuring that the forest views remain the focal point. To preserve the valuable poetry collection, the studio was equipped with a state-of-the-art geothermal heating and cooling system. The studio is also relatively "off the grid," with a self-sufficient energy system that minimizes its environmental footprint. Awards and recognition The Writer's Studio has received significant industry recognition for its exceptional design: Dezeen Awards 2021: Voted winner for Small Interior of the Year. 2020 Dezeen Awards: Longlisted in the Small Building category. 2023 SARA National Design Awards: National Winner for Design Excellence in the Small Projects category. Completed in 2017, the 91-square-meter home is located in a forested area near the Kattegat seashore. It is characterized by a vaulted steel roof and a long, extruded tube shape, giving it a distinctive yet simple aesthetic that reinterprets traditional Danish cabins and barns. Inside, the house features a wood-clad interior with eight visible arched steel beams that create a rhythmic visual flow. The main living space is defined by its high, vaulted ceiling, which, along with large windows at both ends and along the sides of the house, frames views of the treetops and surrounding forest, inviting the landscape inside. The interior is predominantly made of pine, creating an atmosphere that evokes a traditional cabin. A large, open loft space acts as a bridge between the two ends of the house, enhancing the sense of open space. The layout includes three bedrooms, two of which are tucked beneath the loft. A fenced-in outdoor bathing area is accessible from the single bathroom via a sliding glass door. A pop of color is added in the kitchen with blue cabinets, and in the bathroom with ocher-colored tiles. Completed in 2022, the 549-square-foot cabin was conceived as a shelter that evokes the history of primitive human dwellings while blending seamlessly with its mystical, rugged environment. Inspired by naval architecture, the design features a compact, three-story volume that maximizes space through a vertical distribution of functions. The exterior is clad in yellow pine wood with an amber hue, which is contrasted by a canopy of dark clay tiles supported by large eaves. These materials were chosen to resonate with the surrounding landscape and to reflect the effects of time and weather. Inside, the material palette is warm and natural, with exposed wood complemented by woven rugs, clay lamps, and visible pipes and mechanisms. The layout unfolds over three levels, featuring an open-plan kitchen and dining area on the main level and a tatami mat, a suspended desk, and the main bedroom with panoramic views of Lake Tota on the upper levels. A suspended terrace further blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor living. Much of the cabin's artisanal quality comes from local artisans from communities near Lake La Coca, who created custom fixtures like the clay lamps. Completed in 2024, the cabin serves as a seasonal extension to an existing cottage on the property. The cabin is a contemporary interpretation of traditional cottage aesthetics, respectfully designed to complement the existing structures on the island. It features a standing-seam metal cladding that creates a continuous surface from the roof to the walls, giving it a sleek, modern appearance. Situated on a rugged, rocky outcrop, the cabin is oriented to maximize views of the expansive Georgian Bay. Its position was carefully planned to meet zoning bylaws and avoid obstructing views from neighboring properties. The all-metal cladding was chosen for its durability, protecting the structure from the severe weather conditions of the Georgian Bay region, including high winds, heavy snow, and lake exposure. A thin steel drip edge acts as a protective "eyebrow" over windows, directing rain away from the facade. In contrast to the restrained exterior, the cabin's interior is colorful and playful, with sloped ceilings and large windows that create a vibrant atmosphere. The space is designed to be versatile, functioning as a guest room, a lounge, or a workspace. The cabin is elevated to protect it from fluctuating lake levels and built to withstand the region's extreme climate. Small awning windows framed in natural ash allow for cross-ventilation during the warmer seasons, acting as "portals" to the surrounding nature. A centrally located skylight illuminates the interior, enhancing the sense of space and tranquility. Project credits Architect: Daymark Design Incorporated. Conceived with the intention of blending modern architecture with a Nordic aesthetic, the shelters offer a retreat that harmonizes with the serene coastal environment. The project is built around the principle of modular construction, utilizing prefabricated components for efficient assembly, minimized environmental impact, and adaptability. This approach allows the shelters to be both versatile and resilient, with a design capable of withstanding the rigors of coastal weather. The exterior of the shelters is defined by black sheet metal cladding, which provides a striking contrast against the natural landscape. Inside, the spaces are lined entirely with warm wood, creating a cozy and comfortable atmosphere. The design is minimalist and features clean lines, echoing the Nordic architectural style that inspired the project. This material contrast creates a unique experience for the occupants, transitioning from a robust, weather-resistant exterior to a welcoming, timber-clad interior. The cabins are also designed with sustainability in mind, incorporating eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient systems to ensure minimal environmental impact. The shelters provide a peaceful space for visitors to connect with nature, whether seeking solitude or company. They are a compelling example of how architecture can integrate into and enhance a natural setting, providing a comforting place to relax.
