Completed around 2014, the house was a response to a housing market that Carlsson saw as being dominated by expensive, aesthetically stagnant prefab villas. The 110-square-meter home features a geometric, asymmetrical volume with a roof of varying pitches, clad in corrugated galvanized iron to reduce costs. This angular form is mirrored inside with a series of angled plywood surfaces and spaces. The design is based on a modular frame system of self-supporting laminated plywood sandwich panels, which allows for fast and affordable factory construction. Inside, the house showcases the raw plywood material extensively, creating a warm and minimalist feel. An angular staircase connects the ground floor, which includes the living, dining, and kitchen areas, with the upper floor, which contains three bedrooms. One of Carlsson's goals was to question conventional living, challenging notions of necessary living space and promoting affordability. The modular construction and the ability to expand the living area as needed were also central to the design. Completed in July 2023, the 20-square-meter treehouse-style cabin is part of Altar's broader initiative to create decentralized hotels, offering a glamping experience that uses technology to promote sustainable hospitality. The cabin was constructed with a prefabricated metallic structure to minimize environmental impact and reduce on-site construction time. Elevated on metal pillars to a height of up to four meters, the structure's off-the-ground position reduces its footprint on the landscape, preserves the natural topography, and gives guests expansive views over the surrounding Atlantic Forest and the Joanópolis Reservoir. Inside, the living, kitchen, and bedroom spaces are integrated into a single, light-filled environment, with a strategically placed large opening next to the queen-size bunk bed offering direct and immersive views of the reservoir. The bathroom is illuminated by a zenithal opening, providing views of the sky and treetops from within. The interior and exterior spaces are connected by a generous natural wood deck, where guests can enjoy a leisurely area with furniture, a shower, a barbecue grill, and a space for a bonfire. The project's design prioritizes a rational and sophisticated geometry, with a simple yet elegant aesthetic that seamlessly integrates with the forest environment. A 2022 collaboration with Tok&Stok, which included a line of furniture and decorative items designed by Natureza Urbana, informed the cabin's sustainable ethos. The Copenhagen-based firm reimagined the traditional Danish summerhouse, drawing on regional architectural traditions while infusing them with contemporary elements. Built on the footprint of a preexisting house to minimize disruption to the landscape, the new structure respects its tranquil seaside location while offering a serene sanctuary for a family from the city. The design is composed of two interlocking gabled volumes, arranged to create a sense of dynamic flow and to frame stunning views of the beach and the Kattegat strait. A boardwalk flanked by wooden columns and landscaping leads visitors toward the central entrance and a private atrium, which provides a secluded outdoor space. The exterior is clad in cedar wood, chosen for its ability to weather gracefully over time and blend with the natural surroundings. A green sedum roof, coated with various plant species, changes color with the seasons, further integrating the house with the heather-covered hills. Inside, a light, tone-on-tone material palette creates an airy and open feel that bathes the interior in soft, diffused light. Natural Douglas fir planks from Dinesen cover the floors and line the walls and ceilings, creating a tactile connection to nature and a sense of warmth. In the living spaces, brick flooring pays homage to Danish mid-century modern residential design. A sunken living area leads to the minimalist kitchen, anchored by a silver travertine island. Custom built-in storage is seamlessly integrated throughout the house to maintain a clean, clutter-free environment. The home's two bathrooms also emphasize a connection to nature through framed views and the use of natural materials. One bathroom features an outdoor shower area enclosed by the same cedar that clads the exterior, allowing inhabitants to immerse themselves in their natural surroundings. The 70-square-meter house is situated on a steeply sloping site on the island's northwestern tip, with panoramic views over the Minch strait to the Outer Hebrides. The project was conceived as a year-round rental property, and it has garnered architectural awards and recognition, including being named the best holiday house for couples in the UK by The Sunday Times. The design is a contemporary take on the utilitarian agricultural sheds commonly found in the Scottish Highlands. The gabled house is clad entirely in corrugated, mill-finished aluminum sheeting, which provides durable protection against the region's frequent, fierce storms. The architects chose materials and a design that enabled much of the construction to be completed by a single person, celebrating the tradition of rural self-build projects. Recycled materials were incorporated where possible, including using leftover timber for built-in beds and seats, and offcuts for bedside tables. Inside, the interior contrasts with the rugged exterior by creating a character that is both modern and rustic. Simple materials like concrete floors, plywood joinery, and timber wall paneling create a tranquil backdrop. Vibrant pops of color, inspired by the surrounding landscape—such as fuchsia wildflowers, grass green, and sunset orange—are featured in the furnishings. Despite minimal window openings on the external facade, a strategic horizontal window on the north elevation provides a ""hide"" to observe the sea and landscape in all weather conditions. Completed in 2018, the 45 m² house is located in the northern mountains of Vietnam, near Hanoi, and was created to serve as a serene retreat for 2–4 people. The house is notable for its innovative, treehouse-inspired design, which perches it on a steep hill and uses a playful "hammock deck" to integrate the living space with a large, existing tree trunk. The design of Forest House 02 prioritizes a minimal impact on the natural surroundings and an intimate connection with the environment. The house is built with a simple, lightweight structure using steel box frames, wood, glass, lightweight concrete, and clay stone. This approach reduces the load on the foundation and minimizes the construction's effect on the landscape. The house is supported by two steel pillars and rests on a rock drop-off, making it feel like it is floating among the treetops. The interior, at nearly 500 square feet, is arranged in an L-shape, accommodating a combined living room-kitchen area and a bedroom. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows and sliding doors liberate the views and maximize the interaction between the interior and the forest. Forest House 02 is distinguished by its material choices and unique features that blend comfort with the outdoors. A favorite feature is the "hammock-like" terrace, an outdoor playground with a net deck that wraps around a large tree trunk, offering a relaxing, semi-suspended space among the branches. The predominantly wooden interior is accented with stone and marble, creating a "luxe glamping" feel that is both rustic and elegant. As with Chu Van Dong's earlier work, the project demonstrates a commitment to creating low-cost yet well-designed residential spaces.
