The lookout was conceived as a multi-purpose building, serving as a hunting blind, a writing studio, and an observation deck that provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Texas Hill Country. It is intentionally nestled below a limestone cliff edge, requiring it to be "discovered" by those approaching from the top of the mesa. The design is a celebration of simple materials and low-tech methods, with a focus on artistry and craftsmanship. To contrast with the ranch's more traditional Hill Country vernacular, the lookout features a modern form and was constructed with naturally weathering steel, also known as Cor-Ten steel. This choice was inspired by the owner's past, which included welding oil tanks, and allows the structure to age naturally and blend in with the surrounding terrain. Inside, the rough exterior gives way to a softer palette, with plain walls, wooden ceilings, and large floor-to-ceiling windows that fill the space with light and frame the views. The interior space is divided into a writing studio and a hunting blind, connected by a walkway that wraps around the exterior and leads to the rooftop observation deck. The careful detailing and use of warm woods contribute to the building's aesthetic as a "jewel box in the landscape". The thoughtful placement and design of the lookout were recognized with a 2017 AIA Austin Design Award. Completed in 2024, the cabin's design is a modern tribute to the area's logging mill history, incorporating locally sourced, heavy timbers that are exposed on both the interior and exterior. The structure is located directly adjacent to the waterfront, an atypical positioning made possible by grandfathered regulations that allow it to be sited close to the lake while preserving the existing tree cover. The cabin is raised off the ground, requiring no excavation and minimizing its impact on the natural grade. The architectural approach emphasizes a connection to nature through its materials and siting. The mass timber frame provides a natural, rustic aesthetic, while a generous roof overhang offers protection from the summer sun. Inside, the heavy timber frame is left exposed, adding warmth and character, with elements like the wet bar, featuring Douglas fir timber and Canadian granite, creating a play of light and shadow. It is situated in the heavily wooded Adirondack Mountains of New York, on a lake accessible only by boat, and was designed for a family that has spent summers in the area for generations. The 783-square-foot, two-bedroom cabin was constructed with minimal impact on the environment and stands elevated on stilts, allowing the existing ecosystem to thrive beneath it. To avoid disturbing the forest, construction was carried out with hand tools and smaller equipment, with the firm's partner, Otto Stonorov, hand-building much of the structure using a human-powered chain hoist to raise large timbers. The design is a simple and honest expression of its materials and site. The structure is a wood-clad timber frame joined with steel components, with locally sourced hemlock forming the main frame and white pine used for the siding and floors. Extensive glazing offers panoramic views of the forest and lake, particularly from the master bedroom and a main living area that extends onto a deck through a large window and door. The off-grid property is powered by a solar array located elsewhere on-site, and a sustainable filtration system purifies lake water for in-home use. The interior features a warm and inviting atmosphere, with a central living area, built-in bunk beds in a loft area, and handcrafted elements throughout. Almost all of the furniture, including a dining table with benches and finger-jointed kitchen drawers, was custom-made by Stonorov Workshop. This prototype village demonstrates that it is already possible to build healthy, low-carbon, and affordable homes using readily available materials and existing construction techniques, rather than relying on future technology. The initiative was part of Copenhagen's tenure as UNESCO World Capital of Architecture in 2023. The project showcases seven full-scale prototypes, comprising five open pavilions and two complete, ready-to-live-in homes. These are built based on five key principles that aim to create homes that are healthy, affordable, simple, scalable, and adaptable over time. A comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment was conducted for each material, design, and building technique to carefully evaluate and minimize its environmental impact. The result is a total CO2 footprint nearly three times lower than that of an average Danish house, while also ensuring a first-class indoor climate. The two completed homes are a timber frame house, built with standard wood construction, and a cross-laminated timber (CLT) house. Both are designed with a focus on healthy indoor environments, optimizing daylight, thermal comfort, acoustics, and air quality. Natural ventilation is prioritized wherever possible. To ensure affordability, the designs focus on simple and efficient construction methods that do not add significant cost. The modular approach also allows for future scalability and adaptability to different settings. The project's design also features a focus on disassembly, so that the village can be deconstructed and rebuilt elsewhere after its initial 3–5-year test period, further extending the lifespan of the materials. The concept's long-term goal is to inspire and challenge the building industry to adopt more sustainable practices. After 88 days of occupation by 98 guests, the project collected valuable data on indoor climate and occupant experience, confirming that what is good for the planet can also greatly benefit people. The project was developed as a "growing" home, allowing for phased construction and future expansion from the initial 22-square-meter module to a larger residence of up to 100 square meters. The initial prototype, completed in 2019, is situated on the rocky coast of Crimea. The core of the Ecohouse S22's sustainability is its unique construction method, which uses prefabricated straw panels. These panels are made from compressed straw bales set within a strong wooden frame. This method allows the house kit to be delivered in pieces and erected quickly, typically within two to three days. The use of straw as insulation provides excellent thermal properties, exceeding the heat-insulating performance of traditional wood or brick walls and aligning with European passive house standards for minimal heat loss. As straw is a renewable natural resource, this construction method is eco-friendly, utilizes what would otherwise be considered agricultural waste, and generates minimal construction waste. The design of the Crimea prototype features a strong, cantilevered terrace that projects from the dense vegetation, offering elevated views of the coast and surrounding mountains. To protect against prying eyes, the main facade with its wide window is hidden from passersby. Inside, the two-story module is compactly arranged, with a hallway and bathroom on the first floor and a quieter bedroom area on the second. The house is also equipped with solar panels, designed to provide a significant portion of its energy needs.
