The modest, modular, and solar-powered structure is positioned on a hilly, forested terrain to capture distant views of the Pacific Ocean and optimize passive solar gains. The house is organized into three separate volumes connected by a central circulation space. This longitudinal layout follows the slope of the site, with "cuts" between the volumes allowing for north-south sightlines across the property. The three modules accommodate distinct programmatic functions: Public area: Contains the open-plan living room, kitchen, and dining area. Children's private area: Houses the children's bedrooms. Adults' private area: Contains the master bedroom. A west-facing terrace runs along the length of the house, providing a direct connection to the outdoors from all three modules. A broken gable roof structure envelops the three volumes, creating a unified form that dialogues with the existing terrain. The entire structure is made of dimensioned wood, with composite pillars, beams, and trusses left exposed to serve as the building's final expression. Partitions are constructed from Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs), which offer high thermal performance. The exterior is clad in a rough horizontal shed siding. The walls and ceilings are finished with slotted plywood. The butterfly roof is equipped with photovoltaic panels, which supply all the electrical needs for the house. Elevated foundations minimize disturbance to the natural ground. The home's orientation and modular layout are designed to maximize sunlight and ventilation throughout the year. The 19.8-square-meter cabin was part of a broader project to provide additional housing for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, with a focus on sustainable construction and a minimal footprint in a pristine natural setting. The exterior is defined by a black sheet metal cladding and a hipped roof, with large windows creating a dynamic contrast with the sunlight. This dark and angular form sets it apart from its surroundings while its small scale keeps the environmental impact low. The interior maximizes its small area by creating a double-height volume and utilizing a minimalist, fully wooden finish. A steep staircase doubles as a storage space, leading to a garret that houses a large bed. The simple interior features built-in elements, including a kitchen and bathroom. The interior is painted in a warm yellow, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The combination of a large bed in the loft, a built-in kitchen, and a small bathroom provides all the necessary amenities within a compact and efficient layout. Completed in 2019, the house is celebrated for its sensitive integration into the hilly, coastal landscape, reflecting the firm's philosophy of creating "caring architecture" that forms a connection between place, material, and history. The house is designed as a contemporary interpretation of a traditional gabled home, but its form is meticulously adapted to its specific location. The building is positioned close to a steep northern slope, with large windows strategically placed to frame views over the surrounding landscape and bay, making the setting an integral part of the living experience. The interior is arranged as a split-level space, following the natural topography of the land. This creates distinct living zones while maintaining a fluid, open atmosphere and a continuous visual connection with the outdoors. The home features a complex, silvery gabled roofline that is both dramatic and subtle. A central, double-height living area gives way to smaller, more private spaces, with a large, elevated deck that extends the living space outdoors. The design relies on a restrained palette of materials chosen for their durability, elegance, and ability to harmonize with the natural environment. The facade is clad in silvery wood, giving the house a clean, weathered aesthetic that allows it to blend into the coastal landscape. The interior features wood throughout, including CLT (cross-laminated timber) walls and plywood finishes, which give the space a warm, natural, and minimalist feel. The interior design emphasizes clean lines and functional simplicity, ensuring that the focus remains on the expansive views and the surrounding nature. The project was completed in 2017 for the founder of Q-Drinks and his family. What began as a plan for a rustic getaway for two evolved during the design process to accommodate a family of four, necessitating an expanded footprint while still working with the limited area of accessible rock. The design embraces the site's challenging topography rather than trying to flatten it. The angular, faceted form of the cabin is lifted off the ground by nine hand-poured concrete footings, a system chosen to minimize the structure's impact on the sloped site and surrounding tree roots. The house is a compelling marriage of modern design and prefabrication technology, which enabled the construction on the remote and rugged site to be completed more efficiently. The prefabricated timber frame components were engineered and CNC-cut off-site by Bensonwood and delivered ready for assembly, which reduced construction time and site disturbance. The cabin's exterior combines matte black metal siding and contrasting timber, with the geometric form creating a structure that appears to transform depending on the viewer's vantage point. A cantilevered timber porch extends dramatically over the rock's ledge, framing stunning views across the valley below. Large sections of full-height glazing, including a 24-foot-wide sliding glass window wall, maximize natural light and offer expansive views of the surrounding forest and mountains. The interior features a minimal aesthetic, designed to feel like one large, connected space. In 2018, the Cabin on a Rock received a Golden A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category. I-Kanda Architects is an award-winning architectural design practice founded by Isamu and Marley Kanda, creating modern, yet enduring buildings and spaces. The firm, based in Boston, approaches each project collaboratively to craft unique environments that are described as "equal parts purpose and sculpture," ranging from lofty barn conversions to penthouses. Globe Website & Links: Visit Buildings Projects Inspiration No Projects yet. 193.Cabin on a Rock by I-Kanda Architects-Matt Delphenich (1).jpg The Cabin on a Rock, designed by Boston-based I-Kanda Architects, is a 900-square-foot weekend residence perched on a dramatic granite outcropping in New Hampshire's White Mountains. The 76-square-meter house was built into the slope to minimize its impact on the site, which, despite being overrun with pine trees, retains the character of an open field. The design is a study in contrasts, merging traditional mountain architecture with contemporary aesthetics through its distinctive dual-volume structure. The house is composed of two main sections, each defined by a different material and texture. One volume is clad in near-black timber shingles, referencing original mountain homes and housing the sheltered porch and entrance, as well as a bedroom above. The other volume features a smooth white ceramic surface and contains the combined living, dining, and kitchen area. A large picture window on the south side of the white volume creates a strong connection between the interior and the idyllic pine forest and hilly terrain outside. The interior maintains a minimalist aesthetic, allowing the focus to remain on the large window and the surrounding landscape. The design and construction process was constrained by a relatively low budget and the site's inaccessibility, which led the architects to create an architecture of simple, robust gestures using locally available materials like pine wood from nearby forests. The resulting structure, with its monochromatic and asymmetrical form, successfully blends with its natural surroundings while offering a modern, contemplative retreat for its inhabitants.
