EXE STUDIO Mladenovac, Serbia 2008 Since Architecture Office 146.House in Divčibare by EXE STUDIO-Relja Ivanić (1).jpg The Divčibare Mountain Home, designed by Belgrade-based EXE STUDIO and completed in 2015, is an asymmetrical holiday residence located on the hillside of Mount Maljen in western Serbia. The 76-square-meter house was built into the slope to minimize its impact on the site, which, despite being overrun with pine trees, retains the character of an open field. The design is a study in contrasts, merging traditional mountain architecture with contemporary aesthetics through its distinctive dual-volume structure. The house is composed of two main sections, each defined by a different material and texture. One volume is clad in near-black timber shingles, referencing original mountain homes and housing the sheltered porch and entrance, as well as a bedroom above. The other volume features a smooth white ceramic surface and contains the combined living, dining, and kitchen area. A large picture window on the south side of the white volume creates a strong connection between the interior and the idyllic pine forest and hilly terrain outside. The interior maintains a minimalist aesthetic, allowing the focus to remain on the large window and the surrounding landscape. The design and construction process was constrained by a relatively low budget and the site's inaccessibility, which led the architects to create an architecture of simple, robust gestures using locally available materials like pine wood from nearby forests. The resulting structure, with its monochromatic and asymmetrical form, successfully blends with its natural surroundings while offering a modern, contemplative retreat for its inhabitants. Designed as an oversized, transportable caravan, the Tigín—the Gaelic word for 'small cottage'—is an affordable, sustainable, and consciously designed housing alternative. Beyond simply selling the tiny homes, Common Knowledge's project empowers people by sharing the necessary construction skills through their educational programs. The Tigín Tiny Home is a compact yet airy micro-dwelling of 20 square meters with a smart, two-level layout. High ceilings and large, double-glazed windows create a sense of space and connectivity with nature. Kitchenette: Includes an oven, gas hobs, and a sink, with Iroko hardwood worktops. Seating/Sleeping Area: A window seat converts into a double bed for guests. Bathroom: A shower and a composting toilet enhance the home's self-sufficiency. Storage: Cleverly integrated shelves and cabinets provide ample storage. A ladder provides access to a cozy loft space large enough for a king-sized bed. Sustainable and locally-sourced materials The Tigín's construction focuses on minimizing its carbon footprint through the use of natural and locally-sourced materials. Corrugated hemp panels from Margent Farm provide a lightweight, biodegradable, and sustainable alternative to traditional cladding. The walls are insulated with breathable cork, which naturally regulates temperature and humidity. The floor is finished with natural rubber linoleum tiles. A timber frame provides the structural support. The tiny home is constructed on a custom-built, triple-axle trailer, making it mobile and highly adaptable. Its design prioritizes energy efficiency, with some reports suggesting it uses up to 30 percent less energy than a standard UK home, thanks to strategic glazing and thermal performance. Involved people and organizations Developer and Designer: Common Knowledge (Ireland). Co-Founders: Harrison Gardner, Fionn Kidney, Erin McClure, and Spider Hickman. Lead Designer: Shantanu Starick. Materials Partner (Hemp Cladding): Margent Farm (Cambridgeshire, UK), which pioneered the use of hemp in sustainable construction. Collaborators and Build Team: Nico Bigatti, Jordan Allen, Cillian O'Gaora, Ian Tobin, and Enda Grogan, along with numerous students from the Build School program. Designed by RX Architects, the cabin is approached on foot via a woodland trail, as it is not accessible by vehicles. The project reflects a ""sense of place,"" using natural materials to create a strong visual connection between the structure and its rural environment. The 35-square-meter cabin is designed with an exposed timber frame and features two full glazed elevations that angle out toward the water. These sliding glass walls open up to a cantilevered deck that hovers over the water, providing seamless access for activities like swimming and kayaking. The building is clad in a mix of rough-sawn and planed English oak planks, which are left unfinished to weather naturally over time and integrate further with the landscape. A concrete base acts as a datum line, stepping up to form a bench and log store. The roof and its trims are clad in a contrasting patinated bronze finish. Inside, the cabin features a restrained, open-plan layout with a garden room, kitchen, and a wet room on the main level. Wide-format Douglas Fir boards line the interior walls, adding to the cabin's natural, rustic feel. A mezzanine level provides a sleeping area. The entire design is oriented toward maximizing views of the lake and surrounding countryside. Conceived by local couple Henrik and Lene Stokkeland, and brought to life by architect Manuela Hardy, the project aimed to create a sanctuary that minimizes environmental impact while maximizing the connection to nature. Its name, Trekronå, translates to "tree crown," reflecting its design inspiration drawn from the forest's canopy. The design for the 15 square meter (161 square foot) cabin was a collaboration between the architect and the clients, driven by a mutual fascination for playful design and childhood dreams of forest cabins. The geometric shape and timber cladding are inspired by pinecones and the surrounding pine forest. The structure is lifted off the ground on three tilted steel legs, built on a hexagonal metal base frame. This allows the cabin to be removed almost without a trace, and the stilts minimize interference with the terrain. A focus on using local materials and details was maintained throughout the build. The exterior is clad in Accoya, a rot-resistant, pine-based product, while the interior features elegant oak finishes. Despite its tiny footprint, the cabin is designed to accommodate up to five people with a functional kitchen, sleeping bunks, a shower room, and a sitting area with views of the woods. The construction of Trekronå became a collaborative, hands-on effort. Client Henrik Stokkeland, a trained carpenter, took an active role in the build. When he sustained an injury, the project continued with the help of numerous volunteers from the community. This community-driven spirit is part of what makes the cabin so special. The project was completed in 2021. Since its completion, the cabin has received significant acclaim, winning the Bronze A' Design Award in Architecture in 2022. Visitors can now rent the cabin for a memorable escape and enjoy the nearby sauna and spa area, also designed by Manuela Hardy. The project was conceived as a sustainable and thoughtful retreat, with a compact, efficient design that minimizes its ecological footprint and impact on the rocky terrain. The cabin is situated in a remote area, only accessible by foot or light utility vehicle, enhancing its feeling of seclusion. The design is a compact, dark green box that hovers lightly above the ground on concrete piers, an approach that reduces site disturbance. Large, strategically placed openings carve into the facade, allowing for an immersive connection with nature and framing specific views of the forest. A notable architectural feature is the concave roof plane, or impluvium, which serves multiple functions: it collects rainwater, channels light and ventilation into the house, and focuses attention on the surrounding terrain. This central courtyard space creates a protected clearing within the forest clearing, enhancing the tranquil atmosphere. The interior of the Forest Retreat is defined by a tiered, open-plan layout that accommodates the sloping site. Light-colored wood accentuates the different levels, which include a sunken living room, a dining area, a kitchen, two bedrooms, and a loft. A key detail is the seamless integration of a large boulder, which was left in place and is partially exposed within the impluvium, strengthening the relationship between the interior and the forest. A porch is located on the highest part of the slope, while a semi-covered walkway leads to a lower entry point. Throughout the house, the simple material palette and large windows work together to create a space that is both peaceful and comfortable. The heavily insulated, wood-framed structure is designed to be energy-efficient and was crafted from engineered and nominal wood.
