Created with a small budget and simple construction methods, the cabin serves as a vacation shelter for surfers while exploring minimalist living. The project's intention was to build an affordable, nature-infused dwelling by merging a travel trailer with a larger wooden construction. With minimal and primitive construction using basic tools, the design explores what is essential for a "magical holiday shelter". The cabin is located in Aposentillo, a rural surfing village on Nicaragua's northern Pacific coast. After traveling down the Pacific Coast in search of the perfect wave, Serrano purchased a half-acre plot and began the project, which was partially inspired by a four-month period of living exclusively out of his camper. The structure is built primarily from locally sourced teak wood and assembled with simple metal joints. A neighboring carpenter provided wood cuts, and a local welder fabricated the metal joist hangers. The exterior features a gently pitched, corrugated steel roof that protects the home from the rain and allows for ventilation. The camper itself was detached from its truck and placed on stilts, becoming the home's bedroom. The main living space, kitchen, and bathroom are housed within the new timber frame. A sliding teak and fabric partition allows the main living area to open entirely to the surrounding landscape, blurring the line between interior and exterior. The area beneath the raised camper is used for storage, primarily for surfboards. Windows on the back facade are covered by wooden panels that can be raised and lowered using ropes and pulleys. Paper lanterns and spotlights inside the cabin cause it to radiate a warm glow at night, appearing like a lantern from the outside. Project credits Architect: Dani Serrano. Builder/Collaborator: Tiemo Riediger, a carpenter and friend who assisted with construction. Originally conceived as a weekend getaway, the project evolved into a more permanent refuge for the designer. Nestled in a location with no electricity, phone reception, or neighbors, the cabin is a testament to mindful, solitary living. The small, one-room structure is built with a lightweight, timber-frame construction. A unique feature of the design is the use of sliding floor-to-ceiling glass doors on one side, which not only provide expansive views of the wooded surroundings but also fully open to connect the interior with the natural landscape. When fully open, the cabin essentially becomes a semi-enclosed terrace, blurring the line between inside and out. Inside, the space features a polished concrete floor and a central steel-plate fireplace that creates a focal point. A black, custom-built kitchen is integrated into the wall opposite the fireplace, while a bathtub is strategically placed in front of the large windows to maximize the view. The ceiling is finished with pine plywood panels, while a skylight over the bed bathes the room in natural light. The project was built over five months with the help of a small team of local carpenters. Materials were sourced locally, with the primary construction using timber and stone from the area, a choice that grounded the building in its natural surroundings. The home's design reflects a philosophy of prioritizing a connection to nature over modern conveniences, offering a quiet escape from the distractions of city life. The 3,200-square-foot retreat was commissioned by two brothers, who wanted a gathering space to share their love for outdoor activities with friends and family. The design blends into its natural setting while offering a modern and inviting interior. The "canyon of hospitality": The heart of the cabin's design is a central atrium that soars three stories high. A prominent concrete fireplace anchors this space, making it a focal point visible from all levels and generating a sense of warmth and gathering. A bridge on the second floor traverses this void, connecting the private bedrooms and creating more communal space. The exterior of the cabin features a unique two-toned finish using larch wood. The exposed planks are charred using the traditional Japanese shou sugi ban method, while the recessed sections are protected with a natural oil. This interplay of dark and light enhances the cabin's striking appearance. Expansive windows and large sliding glass doors frame panoramic views of Lake Brome and the surrounding wooded landscape. The cabin is strategically positioned to take advantage of its urban-width site, which is squeezed between neighboring properties but opens up to an infinite lake view. The cabin is highly insulated and airtight, withstanding the region's cold winters, which can reach temperatures of -40°F (-40°C). The building was conceived as an "archetypal house," with a gabled roofline and multiple entrances, which helps it fit into the traditional character of the surrounding town. The interior material palette is a simple mix of concrete, wood, and glass. The ground floor, which includes the kitchen, dining room, and living room, is organized around the central fireplace. The second floor contains four bedrooms that open onto the bridge overlooking the central atrium. The cabin was designed to accommodate a range of leisure activities, including playing music, board games, and watching movies. The house is situated on a gently sloping meadow, surrounded by cherry trees, and is accessed via a small steel bridge. The design process was centered on creating an appropriate and contemporary architectural statement that respects its rural, traditional surroundings. The raw, monolithic design features thick, 50cm-wide insulating concrete walls, with all surfaces left untreated. This choice, combined with the use of raw steel and silver fir, creates a robust and elemental interior and exterior. The living spaces are distributed vertically across three floors, linked by an open staircase, which contributes to the building's open and spacious feel despite its compact footprint. Heating is integrated directly into the concrete core, supplemented by a central furnace for additional warmth. The project balances a minimalist, brutalist aesthetic with the surrounding landscape, providing a striking yet functional refuge. Designed for a client who wanted a ""cabin in the woods,"" the 1,100-square-foot structure serves as an escape, a place of play, and a space for guests. Its compact, solid street-facing exterior, clad in timber, provides privacy, while the interior and rear facades open up completely to embrace the lush natural landscape and creek below. Maximizing the connection to its surroundings, the design is flanked by two large live oak trees that provide natural shade. The architects incorporated large, double-height steel and glass doors that fill the home with natural light and expand the main living space into the outdoors. The interior features a double-height living and dining area, with the kitchen and bathroom integrated discreetly into a back wall, keeping the central space open and airy. A lofted bedroom, offering a ""treehouse feel,"" overlooks the living area and opens onto a screened porch nestled among the tree branches. The interior palette combines a contemporary architectural shell with warm, curated details inspired by European craft. Materials like sandy blonde timber, blue and ochre tiles, and linen curtains soften the transition between the sleek exterior and the inviting interior. Found objects and collected treasures brought back from Europe add a personal, handmade touch to the smaller, more intimate spaces. The balance of permanence—achieved through the home's deep foundations—and a cabin-like flexibility allows the structure to adapt to different uses, from a stage for entertaining to a private sanctuary. Completed in 2020 after winning a competition in 2019, the experimental project explores the potential of using wood exclusively for residential construction and challenges traditional housing models. Inspired by the historic Château while designed for contemporary life, the house is a single, monolithic volume wrapped in thick, weather-resistant wood that contrasts with the smooth, lighter finish of its interior. A fluid internal space is arranged around a central core, with an "interior topography" of varied heights creating distinct functional zones and offering a variety of possible spatial configurations. The interior features a ramp that doubles as a sofa, and different levels for sitting, cooking, and sleeping help to maximize the compact footprint. A covered terrace is located under the higher-level sleeping area. The project showcases a blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology. Untreated chestnut trees that had been previously felled on the castle grounds were processed at a local sawmill using CNC machines. This allowed for a short supply chain and the use of locally sourced materials. The entire structure is elevated off the ground on water-resistant acacia wood piles, allowing it to mimic the surrounding forest environment. All structural elements were prefabricated off-site for rapid assembly, with the cladding cut on-site. The exterior will develop a natural silvery-gray patina over time. The 100% Wooden House is part of an educational promenade in the Château park, feeding on ongoing research and experimentation with wood as a building material. Situated within a dense and mixed-use urban landscape, the 91-square-meter concrete house was conceived as an ""urban oasis"" that provides a tranquil, private living environment while adapting to Okinawa's humid climate and typhoon-prone conditions. To achieve privacy and buffer the inhabitants from the bustling surroundings, Studio Cochi Architects enclosed the house in a fortress-like shell of thick, exposed concrete walls, minimizing exterior-facing windows. Instead of relying on conventional windows, the architects integrated two north-south oriented courtyards and a skylight to draw in natural light and promote ventilation. The north-facing courtyard, with its gradual buffer zone, connects with a tatami room and the main entrance, while the south-facing courtyard creates a thick, solid buffer from the busy commercial district. The house's interior is defined by a raw and minimalist aesthetic, with the concrete shell left exposed, complemented by precise geometric compositions and lines. The ground floor contains public areas, such as the living room, kitchen, and tatami room, and the upper floor is reserved for more private spaces, including the bedrooms and bathrooms. The staircase leading to the upper floor is wider than typical to serve as a secondary seating area. By carefully controlling the interplay of light and solid surfaces, Studio Cochi Architects created a series of intimate, serene spaces that offer refuge from the chaotic urban environment.
