- Little House on the Ferry | GO Logic | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Little House on the Ferry, a project by Maine-based design-build firm GO Logic, is a collection of three modest-sized, black-spruce cabins connected by a system of cantilevered wooden decks. Located on Vinalhaven, a remote island in Maine's Penobscot Bay, the seasonal guesthouse was completed around 2016 for owners who spend their summers on the island. The design is a response to the site's challenging terrain—a former granite quarry with a fragile layer of soil and dramatic rocky outcroppings. Rather than attempting to place a single, bulky structure on the landscape, the architects divided the program into three small "micro-cabins," allowing each building to engage with the topography and frame specific views of the coast and quarry. To minimize the environmental impact on the delicate site, the structures were built using prefabricated, Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) panels. These panels, made of black spruce, were milled and precisely cut off-site in Quebec, then shipped by truck and ferry to the island for a quick and efficient assembly. The use of CLT also provided a durable, airtight, and highly insulated building shell, which is essential for the region's harsh seasons. Set on piers, the three structures appear to hover over the landscape, further reducing their footprint. The cabins are composed of a larger 416-square-foot structure for the communal living, dining, and kitchen areas, and two smaller 216-square-foot cabins, each containing a private bedroom and bathroom. The minimalist and clean interiors feature the warm texture of the exposed CLT panels and are painted white to emphasize the striking views of the outdoors. Sliding wooden shutters on the windows allow for solar control while maintaining the cabins' simple aesthetic. Outside, the structures are clad in locally sourced eastern white cedar slats that are designed to weather to a silver-gray, helping the buildings blend into the landscape. The connected terraced cedar decks serve as a unifying element and an ideal spot for taking in the surrounding scenery. - Small Vacation Cottages u Gai | SAN Architektura | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cottage | The Small Vacation Cottages u Gai are a pair of small summer houses located on a steep hillside in Radomice, Poland, with panoramic views of the Karkonosze Mountains. Designed by Polish firm SAN Architektura, the project was inspired by a nearby closed quarry and a desire to reflect the natural landscape. The cottages are designed to look like freely scattered, hewn boulders on the slope, with plans for a third, larger building—a single-family home for the owners—to be added in the future. The design of the 81-square-meter cottages is both simple and strategic. Built on square plans, they feature a ground-floor living area with a kitchenette, a bathroom, and a dressing room. A mezzanine bedroom on a diagonal to the main floor is aligned with the roofline to create a sense of height and maximize usable space. The interiors emphasize the views, with large, 4.5-meter-wide panoramic windows framing the mountain landscape. The construction and materials were chosen to harmonize with the wild surroundings. The structures were built using the HBE glued timber system, eliminating the need for additional interior wall finishes. The exterior is clad in Siberian larch, which was left untreated to allow it to patinate naturally under the sun's UV rays, helping the cottages blend into the landscape. The base of each cottage is finished with hewn stone, referencing the nearby quarry and grounding the structures to the site. The cottages are slightly elevated from their stone plinths, creating the impression that they are levitating over the slope. This design choice not only enhances the visual effect but also brings occupants closer to the surrounding nature, as bushes seen from the living room resemble treetops. To preserve the natural, wild character of the plot, the architects opted for unpaved paths using aggregate from the local area and avoided adding fences. - Drovers’ Bough | Akin Studio | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Drovers' Bough is a 32-square-meter holiday cabin raised on stilts, designed by London-based Akin Studio for a 27-acre farm in southwest Herefordshire, England. The project was completed in 2021 and won the Architect's Journal Small Projects Award in 2022. Design and architectural features Response to site: Initially conceived as a treehouse, the project was adapted into a raised cabin after the trees were deemed unsuitable for structural support. This solution allows the cabin to sit among the treetops without damaging the trees, while also permitting sheep from the farm to pass underneath on the old drovers' track. Form and exterior: The cabin has a long, narrow, and tall form, referencing the local agricultural buildings found in Herefordshire. It is clad in rough-sawn larch, with the structure and stilts made from locally sourced green oak. Interior layout: The interior features an efficient, compact design. A staircase leads to the main level, which includes a double-height living area that opens onto a south-facing terrace. A galley kitchen and bathroom are tucked beneath a mezzanine bedroom. Connection to nature: Large, folding east- and west-facing windows can be opened completely, blurring the line between inside and outside and creating framed views of the surrounding trees and fields. Smaller, strategically placed windows provide intimate views and cross-ventilation. Material details: The interior incorporates locally sourced materials, including reclaimed floorboards and natural plaster. The bathroom features a spring-fed bath surrounded by a Moroccan tadelakt finish. Sustainability Sustainable construction: Akin Studio used screw-pile foundations to minimize disturbance to the land during construction. Resource efficiency: The cabin uses reclaimed floorboards and insulation, and electricity is generated by solar panels on the farm. Water is sourced from a local spring. Waste reduction: Doors and terrace decking were created from surplus oak offcuts to minimize waste. Credits Architects: Akin Studio (Louis Jobst and Ross Keenan). Structural Engineer: DAT Design. Year of completion: 2021. Photography: David Grandorge. Awards: Architect's Journal Small Projects Award 2022. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/a0ba0f_c46153909c544b80b712700947a4798a~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_639,h_426,al_c,q_80/Drovers%E2%80%99%20Bough-Akin%20Studio-David%20Grandorge%20(1).jpg Please Wait Drovers’ Bough-Akin Studio-David Grandorge (1).jpg Drovers’ Bough-Akin Studio-David Grandorge (8).jpg Drovers’ Bough-Akin Studio-David Grandorge (6).jpg 1/5 0 Product 4.6K Views 0 0 Pin Pin Private Public x Appreciators Appreciated Appreciate Please Log in Drovers’ Bough Lower Maes-coed, Hereford HR2 0HP, UK Architects: Akin Studio Akin Studio Architecture Office United Kingdom Area: Year: City: Client: 32 m² 2022 Lower Maescoed Construction: - Category: RESIDENTIAL Project Type: Cabin Post Type: Building Country: United Kingdom Photographers: David Grandorge the Architects Description: The Drovers' Bough is a 32-square-meter holiday cabin raised on stilts, designed by London-based Akin Studio for a 27-acre farm in southwest Herefordshire, England. - On Mountain Hut | Thilo Alex Brunner | ZHIG
SHELTERS | Hut | The On Mountain Hut was a sustainable, zero-impact retreat designed by Thilo Alex Brunner, head of design at Swiss running brand On. Completed in 2019, the temporary, 204-square-foot modular cabin was built on the remote Piz Lunghin mountain in the Swiss Alps, an area at over 2,500 meters of elevation. The project was created to celebrate the company's origins and to mark the launch of its first hiking shoe. It was only accessible by foot, and after its limited run, it was disassembled to leave no trace on the pristine alpine landscape The hut's design emphasized minimalism and reduction. The exterior was clad in a reflective metal that helped it blend into its natural, mountainous surroundings. Inside, the cabin was lined almost entirely with warm, inviting plywood, used for the floors, walls, and built-in tables. A wood-burning stove provided warmth, creating a cozy atmosphere. The cabin featured a series of platforms that led guests from the entrance to a large glass viewpoint overlooking the valley. A lofted mezzanine with a bed offered a unique and elevated vantage point for taking in the stunning views. The off-grid structure was powered by solar panels and a rainwater collection system.
