Efforts that have been made in recent years to lend the location a contemporary character with the name “Althan Quartier” have included a number of urban design studies related to the question of how the existing buildings can be remodelled in line with a wide range of new requirements and best integrated into its urban context. In addition to gaining the acceptance of the neighbouring population, the decisive objectives of the development project included the permeability to pedestrians, the opening up to Julius-Tandler-Platz, the creation of the broadest possible mix of uses and the obligatory densification of a central urban zone. Sited on Lake Saimaa, near Savonlinna, the 15-square-meter cabin was designed with a Zen philosophy of "nothingness," stripping the design to its bare minimum to create a space for spiritual and visual focus. At night, the illuminated cabin shines on the lake like a warm candle, a key part of its design concept. The cabin was designed to minimize its impact on the protected nature reserve, and the process of building it reflects this commitment. To avoid damaging the forest vegetation, a temporary road was built for a single day to assemble the prefabricated structure. The vegetation was then restored to its original state once the construction was finished. The pilot cabin, which was first launched and tested in California before being offered for sale, was manufactured by the Canadian company Drop Structures, with interiors designed by Narrative Design Studio. Instead of an "off-grid" solution for a crisis, the Find Sanctuary model is a preventative wellness tool aimed at incorporating regular, holistic connections with nature into a busy, modern lifestyle. Our new development "TOPOL 27" is just that. We have placed all the functions in one module and you no longer need to assemble a house from separate blocks. There are 5 functional areas in 27 m²: a bedroom, a kitchen, a living room, a bathroom, and a dressing room - a maximum of comfortable space in a minimum area. All this delivers by one truck and simply installs on the foundation. The project uses environmentally friendly and durable materials suitable for active use for daily rent. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Soorts Cabin, designed by formalocal, is an extension to an existing house in Soorts-Hossegor, France, completed in 2023. Situated in a garden with pine and cork oak trees, the 43-square-meter cabin was conceived as a detached bedroom raised on stilts. This elevated position and the construction method were chosen to minimize the environmental impact on the existing vegetation and soil. The structure was built using glued laminated timber frames and screw piles, allowing for a lightweight and non-invasive foundation. This approach facilitated construction with minimal disturbance to the natural surroundings. The cabin is part of a larger project, which also included a renovation of the main Soorts House, reflecting a sensitive, site-specific approach to architecture. The design creates a harmonious relationship between the new structure and the natural landscape, offering a secluded and elevated living space among the trees.
