RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Big Cabin | Little Cabin is a modern family residence in Fairplay, Colorado, designed by Renée del Gaudio Architecture. The project is a contemporary take on the traditional American cabin, splitting the living spaces into two distinct, minimalist volumes to accommodate the family's desire for privacy. Perched on a cliff at 10,000 feet, the cabins offer sweeping views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the Collegiate Peaks, and the South Platte River. The design is informed by the character of traditional utilitarian structures found in the region, featuring simple rectangular forms, steeply pitched metal roofs, and exterior cedar siding that is stained dark to help the structure blend into the surrounding pine forest. The cabins sit on isolated pier foundations, which minimizes excavation, maintains the natural topography of the rocky site, and allows snow and water runoff to flow freely underneath. A steel grate deck connects the two structures and wraps around a mature pine tree, creating a protected, central outdoor space. The interior palette is also simple and rustic, with raw plywood walls and ceilings. Large windows and a rectangular floor plan maximize natural light and passive solar gain, while carefully placed operable windows encourage natural cross-ventilation. The project involved replacing a smaller, traditional 1950s cabin with a more functional, modern holiday home. Architect Eirik Rønning Andersen of ZIS AS designed the new cabin, drawing inspiration from the area's older architectural traditions. The design uses traditional building methods, featuring white-painted batten cladding and a roof pitch similar to historical buildings in the region. The roof eaves are minimal, giving the structure a clean, contemporary appearance. A key feature of the house is the strategic placement of windows to create visual connections, maximize views, and allow natural light to fill the interiors. RESIDENTIAL | House | House for a Drummer, designed by Bornstein Lyckefors, is a contemporary home located in the countryside of Kärna, Sweden. Built in 2016 for a single father with two children, the residence was inspired by an old farm stall that once stood on the site. The design is a modern interpretation of a classic warehouse or barn, and the compact, 163-square-meter footprint includes three levels that are vertically stacked to maximize space. The exterior is defined by its clean, boxy volume and is painted in a traditional Swedish Falu-Red color, which helps it blend in with the local countryside and surrounding trees. The lodge is located in the Skeleton Coast National Park, an unforgiving landscape marked by the remains of vessels that have been wrecked by the treacherous Atlantic waters. The lodge's angular, timber cabins are designed to evoke broken fragments of these lost ships, creating a sense of desolation and remoteness while offering a comfortable and highly sustainable guest experience. The cabins are part of a larger concession that includes staff accommodation and back-of-house facilities housed in repurposed shipping containers. Each of the ten guest cabins is constructed from pre-manufactured panels in Namibia's capital, Windhoek, and assembled on-site to minimize environmental disturbance. The timber-framed structures are designed to resist the harsh coastal conditions and are nailed with an innovative timber nailing system to minimize the use of rust-prone metal. The entire lodge can also be dismantled and removed without leaving a trace at the end of its 25-year concession. The two-part design of each cabin features a bedroom with a pitched roof and a large window offering panoramic views, which is connected to a pointed, ""bow-like"" bathroom structure. Interiors, designed by Melanie van der Merwe of Women Unleashed, feature a cozy wood-burning stove and a material palette that includes recycled plastic bottle insulation, reclaimed timbers, and organic textiles. A central lodge, echoing the aesthetic of the cabins, houses the restaurant and lounge, providing a communal space with large windows and an outdoor deck to take in the dramatic views. The lodge is entirely solar-powered, with electrical systems designed for maximum efficiency using timer and motion-sensor switches. Water is sourced from a borehole and conserved with efficiency measures, and sewage is treated on-site. The lodge is located in the Skeleton Coast National Park, an unforgiving landscape marked by the remains of vessels that have been wrecked by the treacherous Atlantic waters. The lodge's angular, timber cabins are designed to evoke broken fragments of these lost ships, creating a sense of desolation and remoteness while offering a comfortable and highly sustainable guest experience. The cabins are part of a larger concession that includes staff accommodation and back-of-house facilities housed in repurposed shipping containers. Each of the ten guest cabins is constructed from pre-manufactured panels in Namibia's capital, Windhoek, and assembled on-site to minimize environmental disturbance. The timber-framed structures are designed to resist the harsh coastal conditions and are nailed with an innovative timber nailing system to minimize the use of rust-prone metal. The entire lodge can also be dismantled and removed without leaving a trace at the end of its 25-year concession. The two-part design of each cabin features a bedroom with a pitched roof and a large window offering panoramic views, which is connected to a pointed, ""bow-like"" bathroom structure. Interiors, designed by Melanie van der Merwe of Women Unleashed, feature a cozy wood-burning stove and a material palette that includes recycled plastic bottle insulation, reclaimed timbers, and organic textiles. A central lodge, echoing the aesthetic of the cabins, houses the restaurant and lounge, providing a communal space with large windows and an outdoor deck to take in the dramatic views. The lodge is entirely solar-powered, with electrical systems designed for maximum efficiency using timer and motion-sensor switches. Water is sourced from a borehole and conserved with efficiency measures, and sewage is treated on-site. The lodge's low-impact design, use of sustainable materials, and commitment to conservation led to it being named ""Best Safari Lodge"" by Jetsetter in 2019. Completed in 2020, the compact, 25-square-meter cabin was constructed around a large, century-old chestnut tree, which served as the central inspiration for the project. Celebrating the principality’s spectacular coastline and its nautical heritage, its series of deck-like terraces that step up along the harbour to offer unrivalled views out to races at sea, or inland over the course of the renowned Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit. The building is located on an area of reclaimed land, which extends the city’s existing marina eastwards and can accommodate a range of craft, from sailing boats to 100-metre super yachts. The club is entered via a glazed atrium that frames views out over the harbour to the palace. On the first floor are a clubroom, bar and restaurant. Above is a double-height function space, and above that an apartment for the club secretary and a series of ‘cabins’ for visiting guests. The uppermost floors accommodate a range of event spaces. The observation decks are shaded by retractable fabric screens supported by a mast and booms. The harbour elevations are fully glazed and shaded by louvres, and can be opened up to provide uninterrupted views. Photovoltaic cells, solar thermal panels and sea-water cooling systems have all been integrated to ensure the building sets new sustainability standards.  The scheme also introduces shops and other amenities at quay level to animate the harbour. The lower floors accommodate a rowing club and sailing school, whose sliding doors encourage activities to spread out on to the quayside. Designed largely for children, the school provides classrooms, workshops and lofts for small boats. Inland, there is a landscaped park on the roof of the sailing school and nautical society. The harbour elevations are fully glazed and shaded by louvres, and can be opened up to provide uninterrupted views. Photovoltaic cells, solar thermal panels and sea-water cooling systems have all been integrated to ensure the building sets new sustainability standards. The scheme also introduces shops and other amenities at quay level to animate the harbour. The lower floors accommodate a rowing club and sailing school, whose sliding doors encourage activities to spread out on to the quayside. Designed largely for children, the school provides classrooms, workshops and lofts for small boats. Inland, there is a landscaped park on the roof of the sailing school and nautical society. Bounded on one side by the club’s restaurant terrace and leading on the other side to a new exhibition hall, it complements the sequence of green spaces in this densely populated city and forms a new link in the pedestrian route between the quayside and Casino Square.
